@@itz_a_boy1435 thanks I needed someone to dryly explain a simple joke.
@@sorrenblitz805 ..... mmmmmm
Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.
what about an ak47 metronome? That's how they keep time in the Middle East

I’ve been playing for years since I taught myself in high school, and only now am I discovering that
(1) using three fingers to hold the pick is weird (feels the most comfortable / natural way to me)
(2) I downpick everything, including solos (but sometimes strum on choruses)
(3) I guess I play like James Hetfield and have never realized until now
I have always held the pick with two fingers, I never realized it was weird until recently. I think it just gives more control and makes it easier to grip the pick
Even Carlos Santana uses two fingers while picking.
I only use upstrokes.
I play bass.
I do upstrokes with my fingers but alternate picking with a pick

For a few weeks I have been teaching myself to pick down as fast as James Hetfield, and I've gotten kinda close, but I'm not as fast as James yet. I even hold a pick exactly like him, too.
I have learned the open string part of Nothing Else Matters on guitar, and I am teaching myself to play parts of One, Creeping Death, and Master of Puppets on my guitar because I got a Kirk Hammett guitar lessons book for Christmas.
Maybe you wanna try picking with your own style like using two fingers only. It works for me in playing Metallica's trash metal tracks (all downpicks and keeping up with the tempo).
What's funny is I play just like James Hetfield, I have my guitar low and I only down pick even in solos and master of puppets 😂

You are a funny guy. The scene in the car looking at the “accident” was genius!😂😂
I hold my guitar pick sideways ( so the pointy end if facing upwards ), so I'm picking the string with the shorter, rounded end instead of the sharp end. Then I file down the edge of my guitar picks with sandpaper to give it a bit of a 'grip' on the strings when picking. Works great for me, not sure if anyone else picks this way.
Oh yeah I do too and everyone thinks it’s weird
I do. It seems to be the only way I can trem-pick.

Kurt Cobain that was what I was thinking

He’s too skilled for picks
Actually, StevieT, if you're familiar with Frank Zappa, he used upstrokes almost all the time as well with HIS guitar playing. Frank was a pretty good guitarist as well. Great right-hand speed and very smooth legato technique. AND he started the careers of big-time guitarist Steve Vai and percussion elite Terry Bozzio. I never knew Pat Metheny played with a lot of upstrokes and I watched this video a lot.
I was waiting for Zappa too 😁
this video deserves a part 2!
3:21 this is called hitchhiker’s thumb, it technically counts as being double jointed, the thing is that you are born with joints that can bend 90°
do you know the name of the song he's playing?
@@legoobi-wankenobi3080 Tosin is playing Mindspun, Steve is playing CAFO
All hitchhiker's thumbs are not created equal though, lol. Some curve much more extremely than others. I have a hitchhiker's thumb too, for instance, but it's nowhere near as far extremely bending as Tosin's. Tosin has a long thumb AND it bends back extremely far, even for a hitchhiker's thumb.
I have a hitchhikers thumb my friends are terrified of me
I jave a friend with that "mutation" and it and his obsessive personality makes him a monster at 2d fighting games especially King of Fighters and Street Fighter

But his picking style doesn't seem so ughhhh wyaak to me like its weird but its okay it seems smooth and just not disgusting like that Log guitarist , also marty can play some real mind boggling shits :)
Before reading the comments I bet that Marty would be on the top comments
Interestingly, Misha Mansoor's way of holding his pick was sort of an important aspect of the sound he pioneered. He mostly holds it normally now, but he used to hold it with his index and middle finger on one side and his thumb on the other. It changed the pick angle to where it gave the note that strong attack that's associated with djent
That's considered an abnormal way to hold the pick? That's what I've always done since I started playing back in 2002.
@@sorrenblitz805 yeah, it’s mostly considered “normal” to hold it with your index and thumb. Holding it with 3 fingers is technically considered poor technique, but honestly who cares? You play how you wanna play
This is one of your funniest videos - hilarious from start to finish. 14:05 was gold.
I always found that the one with the grounded pinky was most effective for me. If I keep the pinky grounded on the body below the strings, I can just use muscle memory to make sure I'm picking the right string without having to watch my right hand. The pick gets held like Cartman's Jennifer Lopez and the middle and ring just fend for themselves. I've been told it's weird, but it just works.
I just realised I use the same picking style as James hetfield and didn’t even notice😂
Not gonna lie i was always doing this and thought it was wrong, kept trying to hold it the "correct" way but always sunconciously reverted to the hetfield. Now i know he uses that technique, i aint gonna worry about it so much and just play what feels comfortable.
Same here mate... Thumb and two fingers for life
Yeah I was always the same but was never really bothered about it cause it works. Now I know Hetfield does it and that makes it cooler

Yes me too
Marty was the person i immediately thought of! lol I'm starting to think there is no "proper" picking technique because it sure as hell didn't slow any of these guys down!
I have always preferred my thumb to picks and recently started trying thumbpicks instead I like that they don't hinder fingerpicking at all like a pick does (hybrid picking)
The weirdest guitarist picking techinque is lil Wayne’s picking
Joshua Williams not picking at all.
You could probably play better with a shovel
It's actually his thumb
Not guitarist (or musician)at all
You could run over 50 flaming toaster ovens with a monster truck and it would sound better than lil Wayne

3:28 I can do the exact same thing, it’s called hitchhiker’s thumb. When your thumb has an extra joint in it and it’s one of my favourite features about me
3:53 that face was hilarious 😂😂💀
I use 3 fingers too, that's because I hold a pen the same way. Tried to correct it to the "right" way, but just doesn't quite work for me.
A lot of players change up their grip depending on what they're playing at the time. They might have one technique for playing string-skipping arpeggios and another for shredding. The right way is whatever works for you.
@@tantrispicks2440 What this guy said is right. Personally I play sweep picking with the pick directly pointed towards the body of the guitar and use a .056 pick. If I need the pick to be sturdy I choke the pick to barely a tip. The reason I use that thin of a pick and point it towards the strings is because it provides the most clarity, the pick is thin enough to just flop off the string to the next one. If you're gonna slowly strum a chord then it makes sense to use the same type of pick you would when strumming a chord and thin picks are popular among chord strummers.
The thin pick coupled with a picking style like Steve Morse is just a great way of gaining speed.
I naturally pick like Steve Morse so I get why he picks that way.
I’ve always used 3 fingers (Thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger) it makes my strumming technique look weird sometimes

@8:24 when I have a power-chord-section with palm-muted and sometimes picked notes, I up-stroke the normal-picked power-chords and pick the palm-muted down. the reason for that is that Dimebag did that quite a lot and I adopted it into my playing, it gives these chords a litte cremieness from the percussive sound of the blocked strings above them.
by the way, Marty Friedmans picking-technique is so wierd bechause he is muting the open strings with his arm.
I modeled my Technique from Dan Spitz of ANTHRAX. I read a lot of his columns on Guitar World when I was a kid, he explained the pinch harmonic very well. 👍🏽

Well in my opinion every single guitarist finds his best way of playing if he tries his own picking style.
@@nihilusobscurio8380 absolutely. If a guitar player wants to be comfortable playing, he’s gotta play in whatever way he wants.
What about Mark Knopfler? He uses his thumb, pointer, and middle finger in place of a standard pick.
Thats called finger picking and its very common. All blues guys did it. The south had a lot of that with the banjo being a popular instrument as it was invented by slaves in the 17th century in the Caribbean
i think he used a pick to amplify the sound or something but also im pretty sure lindsey buckingham didn't use a pick either which probably comes from him starting as a classical player wheras with knopfler (as the previous person has stated) it comes from blues.
I came here to make a Mark Knopfler comment...kudos
It isn't that weird, it's just that some of his songs are impossible to play with a pick
I think it might be because he doesnt use a pick so his picking technique is nonexistent?
I didn't really know there was a proper way of picking when I first started to play, but once I did find out I was already in habit of doing it and couldn't break it. I pick like you, I pinch the pick with the pads of my fingers.

What’s funny is that my picking technique is similar to Steve Morse. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen will there be a tribute video Steve.
LOL I knew both EVH (for his tremolo picking technique) and Marty Friedman would be on this list. I have to wonder how Marty keeps string noise down (that is, muting unwanted strings), since most guitarists use both hands for that... it must all come from the left hand.
Maybe he uses his hair
i read on a forum once that marty sometimes needs help muting when tracking in the studio lol not sure if it’s true
yea sometimes in the studio someone held their hand softly on the 1st fret to avoid open strings going boing.
Thats what hair ties, scrunchies and Fret Wraps are for. Marty is something else though, he doesn't have a clue about gear, but my goodness can he play. Very powerful player that attacks the guitar like few others. Look at how he busts in like the cops on Captive Honour...lol
roflll
Steve , after seeing this video i came to one conclusion is that you're an amazing shredder and a riffing machine. Love from India 😊😊...
I rest my hand on the guitar bridge then I hold my pick with three fingers: thumb, pointer, and middle finger. And lastly the weirdest part, I have my third finger right up against the high e string, for stability, and the pinky underneath resting against the pickup or just the guitar surface for a point of reference. And keep in mind, I also favor playing downstrokes.
Funny stuff there Steve. Those guitarists were pretty talented. So what it the name of your technique. I guess it would be called the Stevie T Technique. Guess that kinda of rolls of your tongue nicely. Good job there Steve.
Incorrect. My technique is called the "Calalala" technique...
Haha.. Yeah ;) Calalala
The Stevie T Echnique?
Of course. How dumb of me.
CALALALA
Hetfield's down-picking technique became the standard 80's metal picking technique. When you need to chug on those strings there's no better picking technique.
All through high school in the early eighties I only down picked and I love the power of it; actually got fairly fast and accurate shipping strings and so on but then I started feeling limited by it and wanted the light fluttering sound that Randy Rhodes used to get and I got away from it. (switched to alternating strokes)
He was always up there, but I always thought of Kerry King from Slayer back in his prime as the "King of Downpicking" to be honest, lol. And yea, downpicking is definitely useful to aggressive riffs, but there's no need for you to also hold the pick in the screwed up way Hetfield does (unless it's weirdly comfortable for you.) Might as well learn with the proper way of holding the pick, and then practice your downpicking ;)
I learned the same way as James for two years and when I played with some friends they thought it was odd and bad that I couldn't do it for long. But I could go for a long time.
i use my fingers aligned in an odd order: thumb (pick) index... ring, middle, pinkie.. anyways, after steadying my ring finger with my middle i can double pick much easier...
...also it is probably worth noting i am left handed XD
