      Back then, everybody wanted to be fast, so bands would speed up their tapes to appear faster. This is why the notes are higher.

      @@recipoldinasty exactly! He had to learn a lot of the stuff that Cliff used to do for them. Kirk and James both have commented on this. Cliff was thebone who worked out the great guitar harmonies, alternate chord voicings etc that made early Metallica so great.

    Hetfield really is a class act. An amazing songwriter, rhythm guitarist, Riff creator, leader and his vocals have been sounding great this last decade. A very humble dude too. We are damn lucky to have him and Metallica around 🤘

      Why specifically 1989?
      AJFA was released 1988 so one year later his voice peaked?
      1989 they released no studio albums and the next one was 1991.

Most of '89 performances James had an amazing matured Voice, he wouldn't loose his Voice at shows up until 1993 as far as I know. Their performances + James voice in '89 are just phenomenal

      @@warrengauthier4699 people say 1989 due to the infamous Seattle 89 performance which is pretty much everyone’s favorite Metallica gig ever. That’s why everyone says that 1989 was Hetfields best year. That gig was cool and all but I prefer some of their other gigs from 86 or 84 or even 88. The Seattle 89 concert is kinda over hyped a bit, it was a great show but Metallica had PLENTY of other amazing performances before that concert and after it

    In the early days they tried to emulate Diamond Head. ON EVERYTHING. Half of their sets in 1981-1982 were covers of the "lightning to the nations" album, Diamond head 1st album. James was emulating Diamond Head singer.

    I've been a drummer for 36 years and every guitar player that I know would tell me that they started playing piano. They would tell me if u know how to play the piano, u can learn every other instrument without lessons cus u know the keys and notes.

    "A year and a half in the life of Metallica" told a different story about James. They showed his father and he said that "x" taught him how to play guitar. The "x" being a name but I cannot recall it.
    In any event, 14 is very late to start playing guitar. It just illustrates that he has a natural gift that few do.
