I remember back in the seventies when they first came out. Rutlemania hit my town HARD! We never recovered. I remember the screaming when we found out we had to pay for their albums. It was a good time. Thanks Nasty, Dirk, Stig and Barry. Rutles forever!!
I think i just got that joke after all these years - maybe a reference to Dr Robert, the infamous LSD dispenser (featured in a song by that other band, what were they called again...). Or maybe i'm overthinking it.
Just love the way this song reeks of insincerity: "Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie, cross my heart I promise that it's true; I've been in love so many times before ... but never with a girl like you!" Classic!
Know that he was advised by his friends Mr. Lennon and Mr. Harrison "not to get too close". They advised him via cassette tape that his work might draw the ire of the unnamed Mr. M who didn't see the show until the DVD release and didn't care for it.
He deliberately avoided listening to them before sitting down to write the songs, relying just on his memory. It was a great strategy because while they're all very Beatles-y they're also great songs in their own right. He got the balance perfect I think.
As a kid seeing this on TV, I seriously thought Eric Idle was a rock star before Monty Python. The docu was so brilliantly made. Funny and cool at the same time.
The Rutles were so versatile. Loved the solo albums ~ especially Barry Wom's "When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsmen From Hull" and The Punk Floyd (with Dirk McQuickly) ~ "White Dopes On Punk"
In the film this song cuts out just before the best musical gag of all: the late guitar note in the solo (which George did in "If I Fell"). Never have my Beatlemaniac buddy and I laughed so hard at a single note. Unless maybe it was the final note of "Cheese and Onions".
The Rutles CHANGED THE WORLD , people !!! Notice how everything was black-and-white, like in "A Hard Day's Rut" Then, when "Ouch" was released, everything became in color !!
niner numb, niner numb, niner numb, niner numb..... :) the best parody band there ever was.... Rutlemania...... fans were known to pass out and poop themselves at shows, forcing the Rutles to move to outdoor venues with better ventilation. Ahhh, the memories! There can never be another Rutles...they were so ahead of their time... our colons just weren't ready for them.... thanx for posting genius parodied by genius... It is quite a rarity to find brilliant humor anymore!!! :)
Because he is Eric Idle. Wikipedia says " This originally fictional band, created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes for 1970s television programming, became an actual group (while remaining a parody of the Beatles) and toured and recorded, releasing many songs and albums that included two U.K. chart hits."
In reality Queen Elizabeth was never at The Royal Command Performance Show when The Beatles performed there in 1963-64,she was having Prince Edward I believe. As I recollect The Queen Mother along with Princess Margret were at that show.,fab & gear video. I think The Rutles really do look like & sound like The Beatles. Do you all not agree with me? Thanks for sharing this fab & gear video. Luvey1950
" With A Girl Like You" ( not to be confused with the hit by The Troggs) but by The Rutles( The Pre-Fab Four) from their smash movie, "Hard Days Rut.", 1964. The Rutles also received MBE's from the Queen. ua-cam.com/video/gdqDuOP59RI/v-deo.html
I always thought that if the Pythons were the Beatles of comedy, that Eric Idle would be the Paul McCartney of the group, so it doesn't surprise me that they got him to play Macca lol.
The Rutles filled a musical void that the Beatles thought was too wide, deep and decayed to fill. It must have been a special day for the band to perform for Her Majesty. This was clearly early Rutles film clips - before they got into heavy tea drinking.
Wasn't this song from their huge box office smash " A Hard day's Rut?? My big bother was a huge Rutles fan but i was too young to go to shows in the 60's
I guess they aren't a fan, then. Rutles and Beatles history have been one ever since George commented on having a couple too many cups of tea. Comedy genius, nothing less. ^_^
Let gandil. It's been years already. I'm pretty sure that Yoko will never EVER dare sue the Rutles or even the 1st Mrs. John Lennon because she's already got Mr. Lennon's money enough to keep her crazy lifestyle well into her old age. If she'll sue the Rutles, it only goes to show that she's a kill joy. RUTLES ARE THE BEST!
@calimar28 I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!!! Some songs I actually liked the melodies better than the Beatles song it copied. It's a shame they didn't often write sincere lyrics that matched the new tunes. They may have copied certain sounds but the overall tune was different. A lot of serious artists do the same. "Surfing USA" is "Sweet Little 16" sped up.
I remember back in the seventies when they first came out. Rutlemania hit my town HARD! We never recovered. I remember the screaming when we found out we had to pay for their albums. It was a good time. Thanks Nasty, Dirk, Stig and Barry. Rutles forever!!
LIKE THE BCRS FROM SCOTLAND?
“It must have been a great honor meeting the queen. What did she ask you?”
“She asked us who we were.”
The Rutles are seriously underrated, especially by the people who have never heard of them.
And their dogs 🐕
Eric Idle's Paul McCartney's facial expressions, were so spot on!
Creepy on the spot
"Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie"
love that opening line.
Rutles were amazing!!!
Speaking as a musician for 30 years I can only say that Neil Inness is incredible! Great musician!
Eric's face is priceless when he starts singing
"Do you feel better after seeing the Queen?" "No you feel better after seeing the doctor!!" Brilliant!!!
Rest in peace, Neil Innes. Thanks for the music, lyrics, joy, cheese and onions.
For the ones who understand music, the first 3 chords of these song are the same than the first three chords of If I Fell, but in different order.
'Did you feel better after meeting the queen?'
'No you feel better after visiting the doctor'
'Not my doctor you don't!'
absolute brilliance
I think i just got that joke after all these years - maybe a reference to Dr Robert, the infamous LSD dispenser (featured in a song by that other band, what were they called again...). Or maybe i'm overthinking it.
That's what happens when Monty Python meets The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
Just love the way this song reeks of insincerity: "Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie, cross my heart I promise that it's true; I've been in love so many times before ... but never with a girl like you!" Classic!
a very special lady in the audience, barry's mom"
great!!!
Just saw a video of the Beatles on Shindig, could’ve sworn it was Eric at first, he’s got Paul’s “I’m so innocent and cute” mannerisms down to a point
innes' recreations of classic Beatles songs was positively uncanny.
Know that he was advised by his friends Mr. Lennon and Mr. Harrison "not to get too close". They advised him via cassette tape that his work might draw the ire of the unnamed Mr. M who didn't see the show until the DVD release and didn't care for it.

@@tostareeven more funny
I love the Queen stifling a yawn 10 seconds in to the first song
Those expressions on Eric's face.
They got the press conference banter down to a tee!.
"Felt better after seeing the Queen? -No, you feel better after seeing the doctor". Absolute GENIUS!
It's actually one of the more straight tunes in the film--you could almost pass it off as Beatles number!
The parady is just fabulous. 😂 Wonderful stuff.
As a kid seeing this on TV, I seriously thought Eric Idle was a rock star before Monty Python. The docu was so brilliantly made.
Funny and cool at the same time.
_If I Fell,_ but with a hint of what (maybe) sounds like _Devil in her Heart_ near the beginning.
He's not black. He's meant to look Indian to reflect George's fascination with Indian music and mysticism.
212melc but the actor is South African in real life
@@Theparadoxband😂
I would love to have been in the same room as John or George as they watched this film for the first time

Yeah, and don't forget Nasty's book 'Out Of Me Head'. There's some really quite impressive wordplay in that one. Lucky really.
The Knickerbockers really caught the Rutles sound.
When I was little I thought the Beatles ripped off the Rutles and that the Rutles were the real thing. Ah, memories. Fab show.
The pre-Fab Four.
I was only 4 weeks old when this was broadcast, but I was allowed to stay up late to watch it. It's something I will never forget.....
The Rutles are the band Wings could have been-RIP Leggy Mountbatten
Ah, Leggy. "Nice trousers ...." Last heard of in Australia.
i was just watching a live version of "if i fell" and i had to hear this one after
Bloody marvelous . With the Queen jolly good lads

Yeah...I just love the final Cheese and Onions note. Great gag!
@@jonbuckner9746 I agree. Neil Innes was a musical and comedy genius. R I P.
2:00 that is such an accurate impression of John
I just love this. Forget the Beatles here we have true talent. I can't want for their world tour.
The world hasn't seen anything quite like Rutlemania ever since!
Dirk McQuickly is the best bassist & song writer man!

Absolutely perfect, on the money, love it - 10 out of 10!
All You Need Is Cash is outstanding, legendary!
we need more music like the rutles made way back when, how times have changed
MY SISTER HAS THE GATEFOLD ALBUM OF THE RUTLES. I THINK "BOWANA" IS PICTURED INSIDE?
Because he is Eric Idle. Thanks to The Rutles I was able to come off Syrup of Figs. What a band.
Damn!
I bought A Hard Day's Night on vinyl.
When "If I Fell" came up, I found myself singing to this.
Damn you Dirk McQuickly!
Damn you to hell!
love the toffs in the Queen's box,
i think you are referring to Leggy Mountbatten the Rutles manager 😂
@TheMightyHC Nope, as MJPoet said, it's not Eric. In fact, Eric's never sung any Rutles material. (At least not anything officially released)
❤❤the rutles ❤❤
Neil Innes ~~~ Genius & Great Entertainer ! Bonzo Dog Rutles !!! ✝️🎸🎸🎸🥁✝️❤️
I love all of the Rutles songs so I can't really say that this one is my favourite because all of them are lol.
Well, that combined with Do Not Adjust Your Set and Rutland Weekend Televsion. He's more than qualified.
this song is really good ! plus, eric looks gorgeous !
If The Beatles had never existed(God forbid),the Rutles,if they existed, would be a top contender for musical fame. The music is THAT good.
All of "Eric's" Rutles songs are performed by the late great Ollie Halsall.

Eric didn't shred Paul, Chris. He massacred Paul! Ahahaha!! It seemed nobody copied Paul's mannerisms quite like Eric! Brilliant! More! More!
i love the way he nails paul. it is a dead on imitation- from Ed Sullivan i am sure
Was the Queen really a fan of the Beatles back in the day? That's awesome!
....and it's a good song too! Well done lads!
I always thought that if the Pythons were the Beatles of comedy, that Eric Idle would be the Paul McCartney of the group, so it doesn't surprise me that they got him to play Macca lol.
Thanks for the info. I remember getting the album back in 79? 80? Good stuff.
Ollie Halsall was a really badass lefty guitarist. He played with a band called Paco, and also jammed with a lot of dudes from the Cantebury scene.

The Pre Fab Four were even bigger than a cheeseburger super sized. But then, it was 1964 and Super sized wouldn't be bigger for another 20 years.
The Pre-Fab Four😂😂😂😂.

it sounds almost exactly like If I Fell. there's only a handful of differences
"What are you going to do now?"
"Back to your place."
Love the Rutles :)
Someone mentioned The Beatles... Who the hell were the Beatles???
@TheMightyHC
ah okay thanks :)
yes i know the opera thing, it's just because his geordie is completely gone when he sings Dirk :)
@goldenoakretriever
It was. But it was called "If I Fell."
a lot of, specially "If I Fell"
dedicated to a very special woman in the audience... barry's mom =)
Can't believe......60 years ago😁
Ricky Fataar is Malaysian by way of South Africa. And also a former Beach Boy.
this reminds me quite much of " If I Fell with the beatles
Essa música é meio If I fell!
I hope Barry's mum appreciated the song.
Who sang the song (if not Eric Idle)
I never noticed that "mdumas43073" good point.
Fun versión of Till the was you or If I feel
