***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Small egg here. Not everyone is willing to help the small part-time farmer. I have found one person willing to have a really good conversation with me. This is why I love your channel even though we live in such different places. I am in central Louisiana. Please keep teaching. Your great teacher. ❤
I guess one person is better than none! Thank you for watching and learning along with me. I've always loved to share what I learn and find, in the process, I learn as well.
Its more than one person! I have been watching your channel for a couple years now and learning so much. And you answer questions too! I am canning more, fermenting now, expanded the garden, cooking homemade more, and started my own flock of chickens…..all using your channel as a valuable reference and inspiration. Thank you so much!
Small/big Ag (agriculture) ;)
Love watching... you should write a children's story, maybe for the 8-11 year old range about rowan, her misadventures, and how she involves amos, it would be so adorable.
Living Traditions Homestead mentioned you on their channel. They shared their favorite meal that included your ceasar salad dressing. Hope it gets you a ton of views.
Sarah from living traditions mentioned your salad dressing just this week in her blog. She calls you her friend. I'm glad. You two are my favorite homesteaders
Yes, Sarah and Kevin are GREAT teachers as well
Kate, you ABSOLUTELY farm for a living! You might not do it for a paycheck, but you no doubt to it as a living!
I’ve found local serious farmers are very helpful to a mini farmer like me. I don’t like ‘hobby’ farm either, it’s not a hobby, I can take a day off a hobby…
The diet thing is interesting. We try and eat locally grown where we can.
Thankfully, they had coffee back in Ma Ingalls time! That and a milk cow, and I would be a happy camper.
You and me both!
Kate I loved this vlog.
Thank you for being so honest about after the birth of Amos.
Behind every good man there is a good women 🤣😂.
An you truly are a inspiration to your followers.
Thank you for taking the time to share with us 👍👏👏
Absolutely agree her testimony and honesty truly makes her a beloved blessing and inspiration to others. God bless .
And the joke is that behind every good man is an astonished mother-in-law. Smile.
That's funny.
I'll be interested to see how the diet challenge works out. Personally, I draw a distinction between things that would have been available 100 years ago if we'd had a taste for them and things that rely on modern technology or cheap energy for transportation and storage - for example, pepper was available so there's no reason cumin seeds shouldn't be but strawberries are not a January fruit in Canada.
I’m not a snacker and don’t have kids to feed any more. I have about 20 food items I buy. I eat more meat then before because I raise it or have neighbors that raise it. I don’t have any convenient food it’s only hard when I’m really hungry and I didn’t make food ahead of time. So I eat cheese and crackers. There is a lot of food things I find I don’t eat any more now that the kids are grown. Like Pasta or tortillas.
Remember Ma Ingalls are ginger water for Laura and Pa when they were making.hay. The Long Winter!
Love this idea of eating “old school”!!!
The color of the sour cherry mead is so beautiful!
Man…. I want to go to a party like that!! That would be awesome!!!!
I figured if no one was having the type of party i wanted to go to…i should host it
@@VenisonforDinner love it!!
Thanks for the video! After I had my twin girls it took me so long to get over the post partum. Was a difficult time and my husband really had to take care and watch over me, but we got through it. A seed party sounds like so much fun!
I find it helps to hear other people stories. Thank you for sharing.
Always enjoy. Blessings
Homesteader here in southern Missouri.... big ag does not help us small homestead farmers. But we homesteaders hep each other wherever we can. You are blessed to have help and advise from large ag
I'm glad you have a good homesteader base to draw from!
Super cute seed envelopes!
Love your videos seems like the ideal way to raise a family!
Loved this video!
Good to hear from you Kate! I'm sad you were having a hard time after Amos was born. Don't hesitate to call out for prayer when you need it! Hormones are not fun & that kind of depression is disabling! Hope you are starting to feel physically & mentally stronger!❤🙏❤🙌❤ Love the little seed party, what a great idea! The envelopes you made were adorable! 🤗
Thank you Judy!
I just moved to the country in SC. Came from the city in CA. Have not needed to source questions from big ag as of yet. I'm glad Marious was there for you during postpartum. Seed party sounds sooo fun. The diet sounds interesting. I'm intrigued and looking forward to updates. Did you hear the shout out/plug from Living Traditions? I shared that vlog on my social media accts.
Oh and ty for sharing about the cow and shots perspective. Neither my husband or I could shoot our 2 feeder pigs. We called our neighbor down to do it. One day we will get there and your words really helped me with that realization.
Have a great day/night.
Thanks for sharing your busy, wonderful life! Blessings to your family 🤗💜🇨🇦
What a beautiful, cold, intentional life❤✨✨✨✨✨🥶🥶🥶
For me, it really depends. My dad does big ag, so some of the people who work closely with him will help me a bit by selling me hay or alfalfa bales. I do have neighbors that are raising sheep on a small scale that I can buy feeder lambs from, and another neighbor that raises kiko/boer goats that we can buy for 4-H. I was told I should go talk to someone at the NRCS office in case there's help with getting resources for doing adaptive mob grazing with my small ruminants and poultry. But I have found that what I'm doing with my animals that people think I'm a bit crazy and don't necessarily respect what I'm trying to do. I'm going to keep at it, and hope the results speak for themselves as people drive past the pasture I'm working to regenerate.
This sounds really interesting! I hope you preserver. People will come around when they see the results!
Seed party is my kinda party, what fun! Postpartum depression can be brutal, I'm glad you're feeling better now. We don't have much in the way of big ag here in Alaska but I've found most everyone willing to lend a hand if needed.
So cool how you fixed up that boot! Id love to see even more of your videos! Your putting out valuable content and if you put out less the channel moves down greatly in the algorithm. I think your time will come!
Enjoyed the video
Loved this video
We are kind of in between small and big ag. We have a farm in Ontario, Canada. We have grown our Charolais here to 22 and have 3 jerseys for milk (one jersey bull). We have pigs and chickens etc. I find we are building a community of people that are willing to share knowledge/resources etc. I also find there is a recent upswing in people interested in learning about homesteading. My husband and I have been very active in sharing and helping those folks get started. I just figure, what goes around, comes around. Building community is super important to me. Recently found your videos and I am reallly enjoying them! Looking forward to watching your AI journey. We haven’t had awesome luck with AI so I want to learn more. 💕
It's so wonderful hear about you and your husband helping folks get started and sharing your knowledge. One of the best ways to learn. Building community is one of our important goals too.
Nice little event with the good food and gardening! Good luck withMabel and Jessa. Lovely family! Great content! Postpartum is real! God Bless you!☀️☀️
I LOVE your seed party. I am def gonna do that when the time comes. Oh yeah!!
You should, it was loads of fun!
I haven't heard that this was a 'thing'. I have somewhat tried to go that direction...eating off what would mostly grow local.
Cool to hear the list you found.
Kate, I just love your youtube channel! I have been watching it for years. It would be amazing if you wrote a book about your family’s new food journey! You are so inspiring.
Thank you for that amazing "round of applause"!
Kate I love your UA-cam channel and you know what's really cool is how other people enjoy it I was watching living traditional Homestead and she was using one of your mayonnaise recipes and she talked about you so it's nice to see other UA-camrs follow UA-camrs also I learn a lot from you and I thank you for that
I love that as well!
We farm for a living as well and the homesteading community tends to talk a lot of crap about big ag, which tends to make people not want to share their advice 🙃 just some food for thought. Not saying all homesteaders do that.
Fair enough!
Grew up on a small farm and our neighbors had a large hog and potato farm. We helped on their farm seasonal. The farmer always laughed at my dad and us kids didn't understand. Learned alot from both. Thanks for sharing, boys are growing!
2nd commitment. 😅 Now I’m towards the end of your video.
Love the idea of the “Ma-Wilder way” ginger, turmeric, avocado 🥑 freeze dried well. They make like a powder.
Love your long rambles. You're bright and thoughtful.
Glad you like them!
I just found your channel and I’m enjoying your videos. BC is beautiful, I’ve been to Whistler Blackcomb several times.
Awesome! Thank you!
Wow. Amazing content! Thanks for all the nuggets of good info! Sad about less videos but beggars can’t be choosy. You are the only homestead video I look forward to and make sure I watch asap. Thanks! Ps: I’m enjoying the Insiders club so much! ❤
Awww thank you so much!! For all of that.
South Texas, dont find people willing to ooen up or help much until u really open up and try first, then they will help once it seems like u have struggled. So it seems to me. Not many homesteadera in our area, lots of big agg. Tons of ranchers that dont practice the way we do.
Interesting how they hang back. At least they end up helping?
Interesting 🧐 diet idea I think that you are ready, you make so much of your food already, more then me and people think I’m crazy for what I do. I need a cow. Anyways like you channel we have a similar grow season northern Minnesota zone 3b.
Thank you for your vulnerability and transparency. Appreciate you sharing your journey with us!
I appreciate that!
Love your videos Kate. You are a breath of fresh air!
Glad you like them!
Lovely channel!
That challenge sounds interesting! I look forward to following along. What do you think about things that can be grown in your area, but weren't grown 100 years ago? In Sweden, where I live, we can easily grow winter squash, but I don't think anyone had heard about it in the 1920s. Same with broccoli.
Kate I love your long rambles! I've been watching your channel since you only had 3 kids , back before you moved way up North.
Your videos are like talking to an old friend!
I live in Kansas. In my community there are a lot of big ag farms. Our farm is 400 acres and it's considered small by most here. Most of my neighbors don't understand why we are trying to farm organic. All of them believe the more chemicals the better. They just laugh and say it will never work. My family has farmed for generations and did it without all the chemicals. It is a lot harder, but satisfying to know we are producing crops and food that is as natural as it can be! We keep trudging on in hopes that we leave our farm in better shape for the future generations of our family.
Love the Ma Wilder food plan! I've been thinking of doing this too. Let us know how it's going. Thanks again for sharing your life with us!
It sounds like you are a unicorn amongst toads. (no offence to amphibians) Big applause to you and your family for living your best life and stewarding the land for the next generations.
@@VenisonforDinner ❤️ thanks so much Kate!
In ND, they won’t give the small farmers or mini farmers the time of day. The small farmer (under 2000 acres) is more apt to help out those who are just “starting out” or farm to support their family. But those who are considered medium (over 2000) just looks to get bigger and that’s all they are after and the big farmers (10,000+ acres) won’t even give others the time of the day.
That is such a sad statement on how certain parts of our society seem to be working these days!
Loved this vlog. I’m inspired by your new diet! I would love to do that at some point. Also your parties sound so much like mine and my friends 😁
Love that!
On your recommendation I am currently reading that book and enjoying it immensely! Your plan sounds like a good one! On the milestones, my first wheel of raw goats milk cheese, a Gouda, is in the cave aging! Can’t wait to try a Monterey Jack! And I think your children are amazingly fun, especially Rowan at her age. Sorry you had such a hard time with the postpartum depression, if it happens again, and even if it doesn’t, treat yourself and your family with your favorite vermifuge herbs or meds. You would be amazed what that can do! I am currently on a regimen of ivermectin. Yes, Americans and Canadians need worming, too!
Oh yes we did a black walnut/wormwood regimin in December!
I love you Chanel your so great.
In my area big ag farmers laugh at us homesteading folks. At least the ones I have encountered.
Jeepers, that is so narrow-minded.
What a wonderful idea on meal planning using yesterday's bounty. I'm planning on doing the same. I understand depression after childbirth. God bless your husband for stepping forward. My doctor tried pumping me with chemicals.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. Thank you for your kind words.
I love your videos so much! What a bummer that you’re going to weekly but I understand.
Thank you so much!
Glen and Friends Cooking may help with staples available 100 years ago. The channel uses old handwritten recipes and from old books. I finally rediscovered my Gran’s (born 1912) lemon pudding recipe. Love your channel. Also fabulous to see scenery from areas I have visited and lived, especially your winter cabin trip. Thanks 😊
Thank for that suggestions!!
I loved this video.
I loved the look of the snow on your h
On your house.
That sent before I finished.
hahaha
💚 Your food journey sounds interesting and I love the intentionality. So fun to research and learn of past ways. Your Ladies Seed Catalog gathering sounds so fun and enjoyable and your snack and Meads options looked delicious. Glad you seembto be moving beyond the challenges of post partum issues. Bless you and your loving partner, Marius (sp?)💚
Thank you so much!
Love the origami seed envelope!
Thank you! 😊
I made more than a dozen to store the seeds I had laying around on paper plates and paper towels. Hubby thanks you too! I finally cleared them all off the kitchen table! 😂
We're Small Ag. I have lots of Big Ag friends. cattle ranchers and sheep farmers. Since we don't own a tractor we usually borrow one and the driver when needed. We have a bunch of fencing to do this year. I'll fill you in later.😉So far big AG has been keen to help the little guy out. But we also live in a very community driven area.
I love to hear about this!! Sounds like a great relationship
Your comments about big ag / little ag got me wondering if it's a division of size or if maybe its today's uncertain circumstances that create a social distance between neighbours - one's time and attention is consumed by one's own chores, duties and obligations. There isn't enough time and energy to take care of normal routines let alone notice if someone else needs a hand. I think role models and mentors might be more common in communities that already live locally in the 100 mile area
So I work in big ag. I can say for myself, I always help anyone who has questions. I get questions from some people with 3 calves. Most of the farmers I work with are usually pretty open to brainstorming and sharing info. Helping someone out with down cows, selling weigh backs, etc. most of our large farms were small farms to start with too. They don’t typically forget those who helped them when they were “small farms”
Thanks for sharing! It's wonderful to have the feedback of your experience!
Could you show reconstituting the freeze dried anything? So curious how that works.
Small farmers ,big farmers or homesteaders around here in ga where I live no one helps. We have figured it out as we go here because no matter how much I ask on fb or anywhere nothing.
Well that is seriously depressing to hear!! Maybe you can be "the change you wish to see" ?
Also wanted to add that im so so sad that youre down to one video a week. I look forward to your videos so much! But i totally understand having to make time for your business and your family! Just wanted you to know how much people enjoy you!
Thank you so much!!
Would have never thought you were going through depression, you carry yourself do gracefully. much love and blessings to you.
hello from n.ireland,love your channel
Hello Northern Ireland! thanks for watching.
You are so cute, and I love your videos.!
❤
Really enjoy your Chanel Kate!!
Thank you!
Tiny ag here, we do get advice but its usually after they get on a soap box or high horse and try to make you feel stupid.
GRRRRRR! Not cool at all.
Big ag just laughs at us in the dairy state.
They are silly. It's their loss in my opinion!
I giggle because you must get a lot of comments/judgement about hot dogs because you always are giving a disclaimer whenever you mention hot dogs! I don’t care one bit if you were eating franks hot dogs or homegrown/homemade ones I just think it must be annoying for you to get comments all the time! Love the idea of spring seed catalog party, I should do that!
I can’t see the things to eat from 100 years ago!
Sorry I didn't really share that. At some point once I feel the list is more complete I will probably share it.
Most big farmers will give basic knowledge but you better take it to heart or they won't give you the time of day next time you ask.
ahhhh interesting!
