  • Irish Dexter Family Milk Cows: How to train a milk cow. Part 3. Faye's FIRST milking.
In this video, we will show you how and why we collect colostrum, and share with you our first experience milking Faye. You might pick up a few first time milking tips on the way.
Part 4 will follow Faye on her 5th day into her milking routine.
We video tape every single Heifer/Cow born & raised on our homestead.
All are trained to be milked.

    Elemental Family Farm
We specialize in breeding, raising and training Irish Dexter Family Milk Cows.
Our Dexter herd is polled, non-Chondrodysplasia, non-pha. Registered. Our herd is fully parent verified, using DNA and tested @ UC Davis.
Our herd is exceptionally well mannered and well behaved. Bred to some of the highest quality Irish Dexter bulls on the Dexter market. We’ve been breeding, using artificial insemination on our breeding heifers & cows for the last 14 years. ALL of our Dexter milk cows have been in training while feeding our family, for a minimum of two years. Our price will include two animals, in one of two ways. A cow bred back and due to freshen soon, or a cow just freshened with a young bull calf by her side.
Message us if your interested in learning about how we raise and train our Dexter Family milking herd. We can discuss if one might be a good fit to feed and be a part of your families food security. All of our Dexters have been raised around our home, with children, dogs and chickens. At the bottom of the post are links to our website, Facebook page & UA-cam channel.
We share one or two fully trained family milkers per year, on our small acreage, local family farm in Renton, Washington. As we specialize in the family milk cow. We do not sell breed stock, or heifers. When available, we will sell steer calves 6-8 mo of age.

Wonderful job of gently introducing her to milking.
Those first experiences stay with them forever and her life and your life better.

I LOVE THEM! We raise them for beef and market to consumer who doesn't want a coffin sized freezer to store meat, and wants the best quality grass feed beef their is, which is a Dexter. They are the perfect dual purpose breed, but this big tribe of soon to be 9 goes through 2.5 gallons of milk per day. More than a Dexter can do when you're sharing her with her calf. Thus, we have Bella, our Jersey. Milking one cow, now 3 frees up time to do other things.

I love the technique that you use on this cow for milking. But I would have to have her in a stanchion. It sure would help with the readjusting and all the moving around to get up to her to milk.

This is how Ive chosen to train them. I’ve been at it 16 years. Once they are trained. There’s very little moving around. This way, I can share any cow on my farm, and they can be milked in this way by anyone, no stanchion.

I got this one on Amazon. The hardware stores generally carry something like this. It’s a gardening stool. It’s perfect for milking.

Little late to the video but it came across as recommended prob because ive been researching dexters. We had a jersey but shes since passed. How do you like Dexter milk or do you only save for the cows?

May be a stupid question but being fermiliar with goats and sheep has anybody ever crotched a cow (shaved and cleaned up the bag to avoid hair in milk if its totally unfermilier)? Not sure if its a practice or if its totally out to lunch in the cattle milk industry?

I trim my udders with scissors. I've found no need for anything more excessive.

    Are your Dexters naturally poled?

    Why no dump bucket?

99.9 percent of the time, I have no issues with spilled milk. My house is close. I dump and refrigerate there.
