I think it depends on the reason for the debt, per say. Now if he was blowing money and asking people to pay that would be sad. I think it's tacky. But that's me. I would never ASK for money. And I didn't have a wedding cuz I'm TOO frugal and I would never want gifts. I feel bad expecting gifts.

I think it shows a lack of personal responsibility. Let’s call this what it is. It is digital street begging. It is not everyone’s responsibility to pay off his debt. It’s his responsibility. It’s a lazy way to try to get debt free that does not require him to pay the proper penitence, and it’s that painful process that truly teaches the lesson.

Yeah. I'm surprised Dave didn't have a tougher position on this. It would be good for this couple in the long run if they got on a budget, or if he did because it's his debt and they're not married yet - and he paid it off himself. That would be so much better than: I was super irresponsible and now everyone else bailed me out!

You just randomly soliciting money for other people to take responsibility for your personal problems is extremely immature and entitled. Id cease a friendship over this.
It's one thing to request money instead of gifts for a wedding registry. I can see that working out fine as long as you do tactfully and explain the need.

Adoption through fostering is cheapest way, but there's a bit more "cons" for a new family. We want to adopt and foster, but would like to adopt first for stable family, then open up for fostering. With fostering, there's high chance that any bio family wants the kids back and you have zero say in the matter, even when they've been living years under your care. Using GoFundMe to pay off debt is saying that debt is equally as urgent as not being able to afford a life saving surgery or having your family die….

The person asking for the Go Fund Me donations would totally be missing the key lesson in working to get out of debt on their own-which is…debt sucks and you don’t want to do this again! If people do it FOR them, debt doesn’t seem scary or undesirable at all.

You can establish a go fund me page for anything. Why not a big screen TV? Perhaps a hair extension. Ask yourself why anyone would donate? Perhaps begging at a busy interesection? You do not get to keep ALL of the mone on Go Fund Me. I don't love the "heart" behind it. He wants someone to support him. He wants free debt relief. Good luck.

  • @jimroscovius

Nope, I wouldn't contribute because they're lazy. We went together for six years before we got married, so we got a lot of cash for gifts. We went on our honeymoon with the cash and deposited the checks. No GoFundMe garbage.

I think asking for money is fine, maybe even responsible if it's for debt. The only thing is being on go fund me makes it sound like it's being opened up to strangers who have nothing to do with the wedding or the debt. That may be incorrect though. Like you say being financially responsible makes you the odd one

20 seconds into listening to this it already sounds ridiculous when it's a Christian couple how dare them set up a GoFundMe for that reason when they could simply do it themselves stop wasting your money on this that and the other thing and do the right thing and then you could pay your bills yourself I think that GoFundMe should only be in Dire Straits where somebody's having a health issue where their insurance is not paying a very expensive cost for a medical procedure or medicines that people actually cannot afford no matter what they do but people using it for other reasons it's terrible

I think this concept Of people sharing or donating money is good for families to help each other out, but not for random people to donate. For families need to come together to help each other out. A bunch of average people can become millionaires if they put there incomes together towards a common goal with no distractions

Hey if people have so much extra money they can give it to strangers why not? I'd rather have people donating directly to pay off debts than donating to politicians and charities to maybe get what they want done.

When the rich man asked Jesus “What must I do to be saved”? He said go sell all you have and give the money to the poor. The process of selling everything would be a painful process, and the Lord knew it would be as he shed one item at a time until eventually his tie to this world would be severed. In the same way this couple should learn the pain of debt and getting out of debt little by little as they start their marriage…
