She didn't spend it on school. She spent it on living on campus, campus food, probably a new car, etc. Knew a lot of people who took out way extra and just didn't work and spent it all. She didn't make a bad school decision - she made a bad everything decision.

This girl's degree didn't cost $300,000. He said she went to a state school up in Pennsylvania and he is calling from Asheville, North Carolina. My assuption. She went to Penn State (which does have a good PT program) got absorbed into the culture of Happy Valley and at least half of the money went into that. Plus if she is from NC, then tack on out of state tuition.
Personally, I would NOT get married until he graduates and this mess is cleaned up. If she takes cleaning it up seriously, he can help but NOT be bound to the debt. If she starts in on "new car", "new house", "newest phone" and etc., then he is not trapped into this disaster. I know I"ve gotten cynical in my older years (56) but part of me would question how much is she actually in love and how much is she wants help on this debt. Maybe consider a prenup as well stating if they divorce within five years of the debt being paid off, he is entitled to part or all of what he put into paying it off back.

yeah. the couple will have roughly 100k or so after taxes are paid. aint no way they are living rent free, utility free, car free, and food expense free lives. on average, they may be able to use 50k to pay the debt, assuming 50/30/20 rule. 400k is looking closer to 10 years without changes in income in that time. they can pay it faster if they take up side gigs to increase their yearly income and look for better paying jobs. They might be able to get it down to 6 or 7 years. 4 years is only possible with a 200k household yearly income.
For Jade/Sam to pay off the debt that she did, they would need a household income well over 200k. something she fails to mention. That means she and her husband both would be earning six figures for it to work. or someone earning mid-100k income.

Definitely is possible. We were in the same situation but debt to income ratio was different but the ratio itself was the same. And we did it in 3 years, we took second jobs and sold stuff like crazy and that gave us a good headstart. You would be amazed when you live minimally, just how low of an income you can make it on. Also it may mean they need to move to a lower cost of loving area 15 min or more from where they currently live. Gotta make sacrifices to win, gotta want financial freedom more than wanting to just look like your winning. We're on steps 4,5, and 6 and still budget every month, grocery shop and buy almost only items we have a coupon for. I drive an old beater with 230k miles. Yes I could literally pay cash for a 30k car but I have the control not too and want my family's future to be safe and secure, kids colleges paid for, and easily retire a millionaire, on an average income. Typically rural or less desirable areas to live, that has potential to get you to 250k a year for both of you total if a place will extend to a year. Probably the fastest option IMO
