I was getting stressed about the lack of stress but now realize how I enjoy sleeping thru the night, enjoying hobbies, feeling light when i log off, and making more $$ and working less hours! Ultimately I learned to reframe “boring” means “success”.
Same here. Work from home. Highly paid. Consultant Bored but it’s soo easy. I can do my exercise in the morning. Walks at lunch and even cut the grass if a meeting gets cancelled.

I work a remote boring job and it’s very fitting for me! I hustled for a few years now it’s nice to just relax. The only downside is that I’m really not learning anything new in the role. But I am able to use the downtime to gain new skills.

“Don’t you wanna be your own boss?” Dude, no. I’m an IT project manager. I don’t even want to manage other people; why would I want to manage myself, lol? I love my work. It’s all about building and managing relationships and solving real problems, and for me, it’s neither boring nor exciting. It is fulfilling, it pays well, and every weekday I get to leave my work at my desk (which is in my home). No Sunday Scaries. 10/10, would recommend.
I have a job like this! I went from teaching to a WFH sales role. It's not boring, but it's not as demanding as being a teacher. I now have the energy to journal and be creative, plan/cook dinner, and hang out with my husband past 9 without nodding off lol I'm so thankful for my job even if it's not my "dream job."

My husband made the transition from teaching math in the inner city, (stoked the social advocate in him), to becoming an actuary (using your tips btw 😉). With his paid volunteer hours I have him come and chat to my students about becoming an actuary. Drop the “sexy factor” and pay your bills, folks! There are great paying regular jobs out there
I feel this. I recently started a job at structural engineering firm as a technician. While its often mundane and not the most exciting job in the office, its low stress for me. I work under the engineers, and they are all stressed because of the responsibility put on them. Im just there to help them out with the small things and i have so much energy after work.
This is me. I work from home as an “engineering technologist” for a power company. My family has a hard time explaining what I’m doing but I choose when I work my hours. So I usually work 9 hours M-Th and 4 hours Friday. In my role, I specialize in engineering power distribution lines. My main responsibilities involve analyzing satellite and field data, which I then use to develop blueprints and Bill of Materials for electrical linemen, ensuring accurate engineering specifications are met. I loved fishing got into boat sales. After 2 years I had 4k in credit card debt, long commute, low pay and burned out from working weekends. Now I do boat insurance, work remote, and make 95k a year. Now I can actually fish on weekends and enjoy life again.
I am a property valuer. I drive around the same 15 or 20 suburbs, inspecting residential properties and writing reports from home. If i dont take on too much work, my job is quite enjoyable even though some would say its pretty boring. Its afforded me a pretty stable life and above average income.
I'm wondering how you can work on your passions and projects with a "boring job" when you're often working 9-5 and don't have much time in the evenings to do anything but make dinner and go to bed, and on the weekends clean the house and run errands and prepare for the next week....
some boring jobs really only have work worth 2-3 hours and if you wfh, you have 5-6 hours left from your day job that you use for passion projects. Some boring jobs also give a lot of PTO so that's another one
Getting into truck driving next month (though I won’t say it’s boring, personally!) and it pays super well, only requires a semester of school, and fits my personality of being alone with podcasts and UA-cam for a long time. I was originally a writer and while I still do it, I was talking to a professional writer and he said it’s not worth the years of effort to make pennies. So I’m glad to do it simply as a hobby.

Wow. Thank God for Madeline. I didn't know anyone understood exactly how I felt right now... I was Quired Off (a new category I invented: Quit, Fire, and Lay Off had a baby) in May and struggling all summer to figure out next moves. A risk taker, I've worked at two different startups in the home goods and food/bev space over the past few yrs. Both experiences ended miserably, and I learned the grass was always greener when I was at small family owned companies. Even if they seemed boring at the time. Having this validation is so important, thank you.

I have a journalism degree because it was something that suited my skills and seemed like a 'respectable' degree to have, but I never really planned on entering the stress of a newsroom. I thought I wanted to be a content writer/blogger, but even that seemed stressful to me, constantly having to think of creative ideas. I'm starting my first 9-5 job as a sales support administrator for a small company soon and I can't wait. All I've ever really wanted is a stable job where I have simple tasks to fulfil and can leave it all there when I go home. The pay is also better than any entry level writing role I've seen.
@@natasham4184 Hindsight, a civil engineering degree didn’t really fit me. I struggled in college in order to get the degree. But I also knew the degree would provide a lot of opportunities for me so I stayed with it. Worked in engineering for about 4 years now and wanting something a little different. I value my personal time, which I found from the engineering culture is not really respected. So I’m on the search. I’m happy for you! I hope you really enjoy your new role!

As and instructional designer, I have a "boring" job that nobody seems to understand and I'm happy about it. Half the time even recruiters don't even know what and instructional designer actually does.
@@kitt7082 Actually I find it very interesting. Lots of changing technology, new theories, and working in higher ed I feel like I'm actually helping people. I call it boring because when you try to explain it they just nod and smile. Like web design, you only notice when it doesn't work.
I'm 47 and have worked a few different jobs in my life time. With the company I work for, the program I was in came to a close and I got shifted to a different program (or line of business). This new LOB is the epitome of boring. Out of the five days I work, most days I spend twiddling my thumbs waiting for a call to come in. On Saturdays, the fifth day, it's worse because I'm lucky if 3 calls come in during my 8 hour shift. Resting on my laurels and taking it easy has never been my personality when it comes to work. It's been a huge shift for me and I am struggling to find a way to make it work for me. At least for the time being. One could argue that I'm helping people (I work for a glucose monitoring company) and they are correct to a degree. However, this doesn't alleviate my restlessness during the long gaps between calls.
I am 54 and took an inside sales job at a fence supply company. It is so boring. Basically brain dead. But I have no stress when I leave or work weekends. When I was in outside sales, it was 24/7 stress.

Currently have a boring job in the contracting world. Although I'm still a W-2 employee, with not much if any rewards. I'm simply 100% happier contracting than I ever was being a "permanent" worker. It's also a good way to prime myself to being an entrepreneur. If I ever go back to working as a "permanent" worker, it MUST be the right environment for me.

I'm a security officer in the gatehouse at LeLac, an upscale community of only 32 multi-million dollar homes in North Boca Raton, Florida. I work second shift, 3pm-11pm. 1st shift, 7am-3pm, gets most of the traffic, so I get a few last-minute contractor arrivals and then, after 5pm, when all contractors have to be out of the community, it's dead quiet. Maybe I'll get a half dozen guests and 3-4 food deliveries the rest of the night and that's it. I finally have time and energy to exercise and pursue hobbies in the mornings and weekends! I'm doing a side hustle turning my photography and video into passive income on sites like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond 5, Dreamstime and Alamy.
Could we get an episode on what do if you take a job and when you start, the roles/responsibilities suddenly shift to things outside of the normal duties? (Aka - a bait & switch) asking for a friend…

man I actually doubted in the first few minutes of the video but this is very insightful and helpful. I always thought something is off with how people view career.
I went from customer service (high stress, burnout almost every day) to order entry recently and I am super hyped - not only it a less stress job (no customer calls) but I can also wfh 2 of 5 days of the week, giving me a better work/life balance. And the base salary is what I'm currently making now (that's with merit increase) and can still go higher. I feel so happy and relieved. I have energy after my work to go to the gym and focus on my art :) Boring jobs are awesome!
I love movies and games, and i actually really enjoy working in the industry, makes me enjoy it even more I'd say, not "ruin rhe magic". It can get pretty stressful though
I have very boring work from home job and it absolutely sucks ass. Imagine the most boring shit you could possibly do and multiply it by 10,000…that is my job. I used to think work from home would be great but after about 4 years of it I realize how much it sucks. Having a boring job is the equivalent of killing yourself…you’re just doing it slower than any other method.
I'm right there with you. Been working a boring, well paying job for a decade. Mainly WFH these days. It sucks. I'd rather work on something I have passion for. People say "oh, work to live, don't live to work!" But we do live to work. It's one of our main purposes, we spend a sizable chunk of our waking life performing that function. I also definitely don't have the energy after work to "pursue my passions." I just want to relax after work most days, so I can be rested up for work the next day. I guess the grass is always greener.
I agree 100%! What's the point of having a job, if you just use it for the sole purpose of earning money, so that you can pay for your needs, and use the money for fun and entertainment outside of work? A boring job just motivates you to go right home after, so that you can "escape" from your reality, by watching TV or something.
Lol. I’m in that situation. I work on Army base as a contractor as a helicopter refueler. There’s a lot of us and the work is so spread out. I’ll come in here and literally do 20mins of work my entire shift. The rest of the time everybody is on their phone, arguing about the most trivial shit. They actually LOVE the fact that they can come in here for 8hrs and sit down and do NOTHING. Me, I like to BE AT WORK WHEN THERE’S WORK TO BE DONE! I exercise outside and stay away from the nonsense. I’m grateful that my job isn’t high stressful but DAMN high level of boredom is just as equal.

Its funny you mentioned the specific job title you did for Deloitte, I was thinking of applying for that exact job today. I would not say my job is exciting as a corporate trainer. But some of the contracts I have been on set unrealistic expectations with does make it time to find a company that knows I am only one person and cannot do 50 things a day.
This is so true! When I had a “boring job” I was able to regularly cook myself dinner everyday, meal prep, and pack lunch/snacks for the next day. Coming from the service/hospitality industries and nonprofit industries, those were not things I could regularly do before….The job was also easy, and I could usually do it without fully paying attention, which gave me time to think and plan out my education goals. And I loved being able to clock out and literally be done. The only reason I left is that it was too low paying and didn’t have healthcare/PTO benefits. If it wasn’t for that I would’ve stayed though 😂

I have been in retail for 13 years now, and really want to get out! I only ended up in management because the pay was better, but it is so exhausting! I'm really looking to find a "boring" job!
One of the best jobs Ive had was packing ship to order in a hardware store. Such an easy job where you moved around most of the time. Order pace wasnt really high so it was perfect pace. The feeling working there was ”punching in - punching out” so it kinda didnt feel like work at all, just a number of hours gone from the day. Of course the pay wasnt very high so thats the only con to it. Another similar job was packing candy in ”special price stands”. That job was only 7 hours since the last hour was just a little cleaning. It was also so easy that we worked twice as fast. And since pay was according to your production it was twice the pay.
I would say it’s true, but only if it lets you pursue your passions. Wether it’s family, arts, your own business, sports or whatever, this will give the “boring” job a reason, otherwise it doesn’t matter much to my opinion :) Thanks for the vid
"Affords you the time and money for your hobbies" Time. It's always time. If those boring jobs took say like only 6 hours of your day instead of upwards of 8-10 hours including commute that leaves you drained to do anything after coming home
My job is super boring. I can live with that. The problem is it really doesn't give you things to learn which is an issue since it is something that can be automated a lot. So I am still stressed but in different ways. I'll stay here for the foreseeable future since it payd well enough but if I stay here for too long, I don't think I'll be hirable outside. Still not the worst setup but food for thought for the boring jobs that pay well - some might make you less hirable.

I am a property valuer. I drive around the same 15 or 20 suburbs, inspecting residential properties and writing reports from home. If i dont take on too much work, my job is quite enjoyable even though some would say its pretty boring. Its afforded me a pretty stable life and above average income.
I'm wondering how you can work on your passions and projects with a "boring job" when you're often working 9-5 and don't have much time in the evenings to do anything but make dinner and go to bed, and on the weekends clean the house and run errands and prepare for the next week....
some boring jobs really only have work worth 2-3 hours and if you wfh, you have 5-6 hours left from your day job that you use for passion projects.
Some boring jobs also give a lot of PTO so that's another one

This hit home today. Im working the "boring job" and I was thinking of jumping back into the fire of it all.
Getting into truck driving next month (though I won’t say it’s boring, personally!) and it pays super well, only requires a semester of school, and fits my personality of being alone with podcasts and UA-cam for a long time.
I was originally a writer and while I still do it, I was talking to a professional writer and he said it’s not worth the years of effort to make pennies. So I’m glad to do it simply as a hobby.
I started my writing job 8 years ago. It wasn't easy, but it finally pays off.

I was Quired Off (a new category I invented: Quit, Fire, and Lay Off had a baby) in May and struggling all summer to figure out next moves.
A risk taker, I've worked at two different startups in the home goods and food/bev space over the past few yrs.
Both experiences ended miserably, and I learned the grass was always greener when I was at small family owned companies. Even if they seemed boring at the time.

Love my boring job from home, also in healthcare, lol. I did the huslte jobs etc and they just stressed me out and did not allow quality and balance in my personal life. This boring job now allows me the balance =)

As a neurodivergent any negatives of a boring job would go out the window, I like something I can understand without being too technical or demanding. I graduate in early June and hope to find something I can do, lol.

I have a journalism degree because it was something that suited my skills and seemed like a 'respectable' degree to have, but I never really planned on entering the stress of a newsroom. I thought I wanted to be a content writer/blogger, but even that seemed stressful to me, constantly having to think of creative ideas.
I'm starting my first 9-5 job as a sales support administrator for a small company soon and I can't wait. All I've ever really wanted is a stable job where I have simple tasks to fulfil and can leave it all there when I go home. The pay is also better than any entry level writing role I've seen.
@@natasham4184 Hindsight, a civil engineering degree didn’t really fit me. I struggled in college in order to get the degree. But I also knew the degree would provide a lot of opportunities for me so I stayed with it. Worked in engineering for about 4 years now and wanting something a little different. I value my personal time, which I found from the engineering culture is not really respected. So I’m on the search. I’m happy for you! I hope you really enjoy your new role!

As and instructional designer, I have a "boring" job that nobody seems to understand and I'm happy about it. Half the time even recruiters don't even know what and instructional designer actually does.

@@kitt7082 Actually I find it very interesting. Lots of changing technology, new theories, and working in higher ed I feel like I'm actually helping people. I call it boring because when you try to explain it they just nod and smile. Like web design, you only notice when it doesn't work.
I'm 47 and have worked a few different jobs in my life time. With the company I work for, the program I was in came to a close and I got shifted to a different program (or line of business). This new LOB is the epitome of boring. Out of the five days I work, most days I spend twiddling my thumbs waiting for a call to come in. On Saturdays, the fifth day, it's worse because I'm lucky if 3 calls come in during my 8 hour shift. Resting on my laurels and taking it easy has never been my personality when it comes to work. It's been a huge shift for me and I am struggling to find a way to make it work for me. At least for the time being. One could argue that I'm helping people (I work for a glucose monitoring company) and they are correct to a degree. However, this doesn't alleviate my restlessness during the long gaps between calls.
I am 54 and took an inside sales job at a fence supply company. It is so boring. Basically brain dead. But I have no stress when I leave or work weekends. When I was in outside sales, it was 24/7 stress.

Currently have a boring job in the contracting world. Although I'm still a W-2 employee, with not much if any rewards. I'm simply 100% happier contracting than I ever was being a "permanent" worker. It's also a good way to prime myself to being an entrepreneur. If I ever go back to working as a "permanent" worker, it MUST be the right environment for me.

I'm a security officer in the gatehouse at LeLac, an upscale community of only 32 multi-million dollar homes in North Boca Raton, Florida. I work second shift, 3pm-11pm. 1st shift, 7am-3pm, gets most of the traffic, so I get a few last-minute contractor arrivals and then, after 5pm, when all contractors have to be out of the community, it's dead quiet. Maybe I'll get a half dozen guests and 3-4 food deliveries the rest of the night and that's it. I finally have time and energy to exercise and pursue hobbies in the mornings and weekends! I'm doing a side hustle turning my photography and video into passive income on sites like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond 5, Dreamstime and Alamy.

man I actually doubted in the first few minutes of the video but this is very insightful and helpful. I always thought something is off with how people view career.
I went from customer service (high stress, burnout almost every day) to order entry recently and I am super hyped - not only it a less stress job (no customer calls) but I can also wfh 2 of 5 days of the week, giving me a better work/life balance. And the base salary is what I'm currently making now (that's with merit increase) and can still go higher. I feel so happy and relieved. I have energy after my work to go to the gym and focus on my art :) Boring jobs are awesome!

I have very boring work from home job and it absolutely sucks ass. Imagine the most boring shit you could possibly do and multiply it by 10,000…that is my job. I used to think work from home would be great but after about 4 years of it I realize how much it sucks. Having a boring job is the equivalent of killing yourself…you’re just doing it slower than any other method.
I'm right there with you. Been working a boring, well paying job for a decade. Mainly WFH these days. It sucks. I'd rather work on something I have passion for. People say "oh, work to live, don't live to work!" But we do live to work. It's one of our main purposes, we spend a sizable chunk of our waking life performing that function.
I also definitely don't have the energy after work to "pursue my passions." I just want to relax after work most days, so I can be rested up for work the next day.

I agree 100%! What's the point of having a job, if you just use it for the sole purpose of earning money, so that you can pay for your needs, and use the money for fun and entertainment outside of work? A boring job just motivates you to go right home after, so that you can "escape" from your reality, by watching TV or something.
Lol. I’m in that situation. I work on Army base as a contractor as a helicopter refueler. There’s a lot of us and the work is so spread out. I’ll come in here and literally do 20mins of work my entire shift. The rest of the time everybody is on their phone, arguing about the most trivial shit. They actually LOVE the fact that they can come in here for 8hrs and sit down and do NOTHING. Me, I like to BE AT WORK WHEN THERE’S WORK TO BE DONE! I exercise outside and stay away from the nonsense. I’m grateful that my job isn’t high stressful but DAMN high level of boredom is just as equal.

Its funny you mentioned the specific job title you did for Deloitte, I was thinking of applying for that exact job today. I would not say my job is exciting as a corporate trainer. But some of the contracts I have been on set unrealistic expectations with does make it time to find a company that knows I am only one person and cannot do 50 things a day.
This is so true! When I had a “boring job” I was able to regularly cook myself dinner everyday, meal prep, and pack lunch/snacks for the next day. Coming from the service/hospitality industries and nonprofit industries, those were not things I could regularly do before….The job was also easy, and I could usually do it without fully paying attention, which gave me time to think and plan out my education goals. And I loved being able to clock out and literally be done. The only reason I left is that it was too low paying and didn’t have healthcare/PTO benefits. If it wasn’t for that I would’ve stayed though 😂

I am a mid-career job changer looking for a consistent and low-key role that provides me the time and money to travel after spending the last 20 years in special education being overworked, underpaid, and with little to no flexibility in my schedule. One of the best jobs Ive had was packing ship to order in a hardware store.
Such an easy job where you moved around most of the time. Order pace wasnt really high so it was perfect pace.
The feeling working there was ”punching in - punching out” so it kinda didnt feel like work at all, just a number of hours gone from the day.
Of course the pay wasnt very high so thats the only con to it.
Another similar job was packing candy in ”special price stands”. That job was only 7 hours since the last hour was just a little cleaning. It was also so easy that we worked twice as fast. And since pay was according to your production it was twice the pay.
I would say it’s true, but only if it lets you pursue your passions. Wether it’s family, arts, your own business, sports or whatever, this will give the “boring” job a reason, otherwise it doesn’t matter much to my opinion :)

Time. It's always time. If those boring jobs took say like only 6 hours of your day instead of upwards of 8-10 hours including commute that leaves you drained to do anything after coming home

My job is super boring. I can live with that.
The problem is it really doesn't give you things to learn which is an issue since it is something that can be automated a lot.
So I am still stressed but in different ways.
I'll stay here for the foreseeable future since it payd well enough but if I stay here for too long, I don't think I'll be hirable outside.
Still not the worst setup but food for thought for the boring jobs that pay well - some might make you less hirable.
Tuve un trabajo muy bueno muy estresante durante 6 anos, despues hijas y trate de conseguir un trabajo otra vez estresante pero yo llevarla tranquila y no fue posible me terminaron despidiendo, hay trabajos o areas que exigen y quieren verte sufrir y estresarte, ahora consegui un trabajo aburrido desde casa para una empresa medica, ya tengo 4 anos y si es aburrido, pero puedo ver a mis hijas, mantener mi casa y pagar las cuentas, no tengo estress de companeros o de mi area de importaciones y exportaciones, si creo que es mejor en este momento de la vida, es aburrido y repetitivo

Well we shouldn’t stop changing the passions, but rather get paid by the jobs and paid in a different way by the passions.
Entrepreneurship is so much stress that you feel like you are working 7/24.
Would you send a thank you note after a phone screening? Or wait until the initial 1st interview?
