Not finding a job destroyed my life. I graduated in 2012 and didn't have a job for 10 years. I went crazy and my health deteriorated. Without a job, I couldn't move, and not being able to move, meant I was stuck living with my parents. And living with my parents meant I couldn't date, and not dating meant I didn't have a girlfriend. I missed out on my prime years and youth due to the job market.
California is the single worst state in the nation, and I never wanted to live there in the first place! Had I lived in Texas, I would have already gotten a government job right after I graduated.

Don’t know about you but I never look for job openings in my company and they rarely show up where I can organically see it (like another annoying LinkedIn email notification telling me someone in my network published something). Only times I’ve looked for job posts was when a company was hiring my supposedly new manager.
And if the jobs are posted by external recruiters it’s on their website first and then shared on Indeed and the name of the company is not provided.

I read that one of the reasons why companies display ghost jobs is that it is an efficient way for companies to collect data about job seekers, such as how many are willing to work for them, who their are and where their live. It is legally very borderline thing.

I wouldn't mind it as much if people could buy independent insurance at competitive rates. I would rather get paid more and be able to tunnel the money into something I control that won't disappear when I leave my company. I have no insurance right now, despite having a decent paying job because I missed the cut off period for the year (even though the insurance didn't even kick in at that point). The insurance also sucks. I'd be able to buy it like my car insurance.

I was a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Piano Performance. I was repeatedly laid off and underpaid as an engineer and found that working as a piano teacher was much more lucrative in my area. 2020 shut down my piano studio so I starting working as a delivery driver. A few years later I got my CDL and drive large tanker trucks doing local work and get paid more than the average tech worker in my area with further room for higher paying jobs in the future. I’m working on my side businesses as well so that hopefully I can go back to working for myself. The trick is to just be patient, flexible and go where the opportunities are. It definitely doesn’t always work in this economy but that seems like the best strategy these days.

I applied for many jobs 3-5 a week. I only got two calls for a interview in a three months span. The interview didn't go any where. So I apply to a job I didn't think I fit the criteria. Got a interview and was hired. Didn't know they train and paid for all my certificates, to get the job. It was being a caretaker. I guess they needed help. I pass the interview and the training and the 5 certificates, that I needed for the job. Been with them for 6 months and doing a awesome job and liking the job.

Basically the economy is so inequal now people on mass are becoming gig workers. This is like going back in time to the days when everyone served a small ruling class. People with 4 year degrees and 20k plus in debt should not be working these kinds of jobs. Its kinda insane that this doesn't make people more politically active as there is something really troubling. You can have a society with high trust when the stock market is largely still booming for share holders and bond holders but everyday people are struggling. But I imagine people are going to vote for the same people this time around and things will only get worse.

Work volume was already hitting record lows by January 2022 and they never picked back up during the Spring and Summer that year. I ended up wrecking my car September that year, but it was a wake-up call regardless. There was no money in gig anymore.
I still talk to people that currently do it and it's dog-eat-dog at this point.
The only people making money are people that have created a client-list and are working as personal taxi's or delivery drivers undermining the app.

This is my situation. I have had a bachelor's in comp science since late 2019, but right when I was hitting the market, on top of all other issues, Covid hit. So in the following years it really didn't go anywhere trying to break into the software engineering field, I ended up working whatever I could find, remotely. In 2022 I did exactly as was mentioned in the video, and went for my master's degree, which I graduated with in August 2023 with a 4.0. I have been unsuccessfully job hunting trying to break into software engineering while using side hustles and help from friends and family to make ends meet. I am completely at a loss as to what to do anymore to try to succeed and have any career. Thus far I feel like getting my degrees, even with an outstanding GPA, has only succeeded in wasting my time, and putting me into massive debt. This is on top of everything from food, rent, gas, etc all getting way more expensive with inflation.

The thing I want to caution about upskilling is that it doesn't work in a lot of industries because they want another employer to vouch for those skills. That means gaining them on your own often doesn't mean much because they have only your word and no history. It'll still be good for your own growth and skillset, but it likely won't make job-hunting any easier because the companies know anybody can just say they have a certain skill.

Yup, it's an absolute bonkers chicken and egg problem. No matter how much upskilling you do on your own, you can't get employer-vouched proof of your skillset because a relevant company won't hire you without an employer-vouched proof of your skillset. I've learned this myself. Networking seems to be the one way to at least get looked at, but it's still difficult if your resume doesn't show that relevant employment proof. I think if companies understood that if they hire and train someone, they will have a long term employee. Demanding years of experience is stupid because if someone has experience and they are applying that means they’ve already done that work and chose to quit at some point, hinting that they don’t want to do it long term or don’t really have an interest in it anymore. I have seen the most ridiculous requirements for the simplest jobs too. You have to have a bachelors degree to take inventory in a warehouse these days. A BACHELORS DEGREE TO PROVE YOU CAN COUNT…. wtf is wrong with companies anymore? Between no jobs and companies having unrealistic expectations there just aren’t options and people are struggling to just eat. And to top it off, they only want to pay $18 an hour. How are we supposed to pay $1,200 a month for rent, $450 for a car note, electric, groceries, insurance, phone bills, child care on $18 per hour? All while having 30% of our income taken in taxes, paying for health insurance, a retirement account, a savings for emergencies, daycare, etc.? What the fuck is this world.

Don't have children. People look at them as an emotional choice but they are a HUGE financial choice, a self-imposed ball and chain if you will. By not having a child you don't need to pay for daycare or schooling. 2 live as lean as possible. It sucks but you got to be frugal on getting all of your basics down as much as possible. MVNO, unplug all of your devices before you leave the house, start maxing out coupon apps. Jump through hoops. The car you get has to be electric. Recently I've been lacking motivation. Companies also know the currently job climate so they'll ask more of you knowing you don't want to loose your job, but in the end, they'll still fire you if they need to cut costs.

I recently found myself in a tough spot after getting laid off about a month ago. But I hustled hard and managed to snag a job within just 3.5 weeks, and get this-it's with one of the top 200 companies in the world! Here's how I did it, alongside the usual online applications.
I was no stranger to rejection-I must've applied to over 480 jobs. But I knew I had to do more than just submit resumes online. So, every day from Monday to Friday, I hit the pavement, knocking on doors at 8 to 12 companies. Of course, there's an art to it.
Mondays, though? I learned the hard way not to bother anyone before 10:30 am. They're either in meetings or gearing up for the week. From 10:30 to 11:45 am, though, that's prime time for morning visits. Lunchtime? A no-go zone from 12 to 2 pm. People gotta eat, right? Afternoons pick up again from 2:30 to 4:30 pm-people are more receptive when they're not rushing to head home.
Tuesdays to Thursdays? Pretty much the same deal: mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 am and afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. I found people are generally more open to chats during these times.
Fridays, though, folks are itching to start their weekend early. After 4 pm, it's best not to bother them-they're mentally checked out.
It took some trial and error, but this strategy paid off big time. Meeting people face-to-face, showing my enthusiasm, and being respectful of their time-it made all the difference. So, if you find yourself job hunting, don't underestimate the power of pounding the pavement. You might just land your dream job like I did!

Post-pandemic, large companies who receive PILOTS (Payments in Liu of Taxes), have started hiring H-1B/H-4 employees over US workers. This lowers the wages across the board. More supply of workers = less demand = less wages. It causes a ripple effect in the housing market as no longer can employees depend on longevity in the workplace. Bouncing from job to job, with periods of unemployment, is becoming the norm. The risk of taking a lower paying job as the applicant ages, increases. Health care benefits become a higher priority than salary. Therefore, it decreases the opportunity for home ownership, forcing people into rentals. Bad deal all the way around, with the root cause based on superficial population increases, far exceeding the natural birth rates. Lower birth rates are also tied to job instability.

Yeah, that’s so true. I’m now working at HR and they do a job posting just to get an approval, when in reality the position’s been already filled by promoting internal employee. Another position has been posted for a year now, but for the cost saving they’re not intending to hire lol. Also in Korea we post through system, where people can apply directly globally, but in reality those resumes are never screened and people are hired through local job postings, headhunters and recruiting companies. So I feel bad for the people who are literally left ghosted 😢

The main issue is the sheer number of candidates vying for the same jobs, which simply means there aren't enough positions to go around. It’s not rocket science.
Another challenge is applying for roles that demand exceptional proficiency in multiple areas. Many of us exaggerate our skills or qualifications because if we don't, someone else will. This exaggeration is common and expected, but it often results in the hiring process filtering out many applications right away, while a few still make it through.
Furthermore, being the "right fit" is crucial. Initial screenings via phone or video calls are often used to decide if you move on to the next stage. Soft skills are increasingly important; strong communication, presentation, negotiation, conflict resolution, planning, and team-building skills can make you stand out more than a candidate with similar qualifications but weaker soft skills.
Your resume and CV should highlight you first, then your skills and experience. They are tools to get you noticed. Once you’ve caught attention, it’s crucial to impress during interviews. Ultimately, even if you’re not the perfect candidate on paper, a personable and engaging demeanor can outweigh a defensive or introverted applicant with more experience and qualifications.

I got through the third round of my last software engineering interview process and was told the job was eliminated, so my efforts was all for nothing. I had to literally write a drone path planning algorithm to find all the lighthouses in Sweden using a python library I didn't know before, figure out which lighthouses to hop to without running out of batter power, then plot all the light house on a globe and the line path in a web browser, then make sure all the code was modular, commented, and standardized in a few days JUST TO TALK TO THE HIRING TEAM. I have 10 years of experience, so I was really sure to do very well on the programming portion of the interview.
I was ultimately told by the company that I made it to the next round after my last successful interview, but the job was eliminated, so thanks, but we don't need you. This has happened to me 3 other times over my time interviewing over the past several months.

Matter of fact, a lot of the places I deliver too say they are looking for employees (no college degree necessary) but are having a hard time finding people. Yes, those jobs don't pay as much and you are overworked, but I hear the same thing happens in white collar jobs (well you are paid well but I hear a lot of employees are belittled and disrespected). Not to mention, Even if you land a high paying white collar, the company can still lay you off because of "budget cuts". At least with blue collar you have a better chance of keeping a job and some money is better than no money.
