Dammit,y’all are about to make me buy one of these..I’m not even in the market for a new fixed blade but this seems like a great addition to my collection,I need a good kukri anyway
Im personally not a big fan of the FRN scales on the Lightweight models.I mean, they are nice and grippy, lighter weight and are everything you really need and are everything they should be but I’m just personally not a big fan of the cheap plastic feel of FRN,GFN,Grivory, etc type scales..in other words,my problem with the Lightweight models has absolutely nothing to do with functionality,it’s just my preference for G-10,Micarta or Carbon Fiber..with that being said,I agree, the Para 3 is EDC perfection..in fact, the Para 2 and Para 3 are my 2 favorite folders for a user knife..the designs are about as close to perfect as it gets.they are very comfortable in multiple different grips behind the choil and are every bit as comfortable when you choke up on the blade using the choil and thumb ramp..I also love the wide blade with the full flat grind that makes for one hell of a slicer..IMO there isn’t a better more functional folder on the market..there are nicer, fancier and higher end knives but when it comes to a knife I really want to carry and put to use, nothing beats the PM2/PM3
Moon Man No doubt,it’s an amazing knife..IMO you can’t beat a PM2 or PM3,they are all great..I personally prefer the G10 but I’m certainly not against the lightweight models..I have a LW Native 5 in Maxamet as well as a LW 20CV Delica and a LW Dragonfly..I’m probably gonna pick up that S35VN LW Tenacious too
I actually bought a set of Victorinox kitchen knives and I’m pretty pleased with it, it was around 200 bucks but they sharpen razor sharp and really do the job.
@Jesse Robinson Victorinox steel, is some of the most rust resistant steels out there sir. That being said, dish washer, is the last way, I would clean any knife. This kind of machines, destroy knives, both the edges of them and the fixattion between handle and steel.
FFG to convex: just get a stack of silicon carbide paper in various grits, sit it on top of a piece of thick leather (or a stack of newspaper will work ok for extra cheap) and start like you're stropping it at a very low angle. It's not fast, but it works perfectly and costs very little.
I agree,PM2 and PM3 are EDC perfection..IMO they are the absolute best user folders on the market..plus I love the fact Spyderco puts out their knives in many different high quality steels
I have both the bugout and para 3 LW and prefer the Spyderco. Both are light weight but at a lower price the para 3 LW feels much more substantial and higher quality.
Yessss, I have been making knives on a Harbor Freight 1"x30" belt sander for over a year now. $40 and you can do a whole lot of stuff if you have patience and persistence.
With some files and sandpaper (and a polishing wheel for the anglw grinder) i put a convex grind in a delica4 which had a sabre grind from factory. It had additionaly a mirror polish afterwards. Looked really nice.
LOVE my Ken Onion WorkSharo. Even stock, it was very good but the tool grinder attachment is even better, The convex edge holds an edge a long time. I have used it to sharpen everything from 3CR13 to m390 and everything in between. Even have used to sharpen ceramic knives for people.
After hearing House Truck Pig's question regarding hand to hand combat with Grizzly Bears, I have a somewhat similar situation. I live on a house boat, and would like to know what you would suggest as the best possible folder, (preferably under 4 inches, less than 4 ounces, and waterproof) for fending off Killer Whales? They're pesky critters, and they simply won't leave me alone. I usually use a 10 inch fixed blade when dealing with larger prey such as Blue Whales and Sperm Whales, but would like something smaller that fits in the pocket and is easy to deploy for those times when using a large fixed blade would just be overkill. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
I would recommend the Spyderco Autonomy 2,it is super sturdy with a beautiful 3.5” blade..it’s a bit heavier than what you are looking for coming in at 5.6 oz but it has the super tough, extra corrosion resistant LC200N blade and an absolutely amazing tool for slaying sea life of any kind..it doesn’t matter if it’s a dolphin, shark, manatee, marlin or a Killer Whale,90% of the time,it works every time..the beautiful thing about the Autonomy 2 is it doesn’t matter where hit any of these creatures, just a nick of the tail fin, dorsal fin, gill, etc it is instant death...in fact,I don’t think you even have to make contact with any of these creatures,if they come within 10’ of a human wielding an Autonomy 2 it strike such a level of fear into their hearts, they immediately go into cardiac arrest and within 5 seconds their corpse floats to the surface
If I was in your shoes (or swim fins), I would go with the Boker Orca. I mean, if I had to stick a Killer Whale, might as well use the whales namesake. Or if you can find a knife named Jonah I would go with that first.
I hope they do a D2 Dozier folding hunter in the space force colorway. I think that would look even cooler than the current tan and blue which is already a great choice.
The "incredibly low weight" of the Bugout is something most people don't even seem to care about. They achieved that weight by making the scales feel like they'll bend on you. That's something thats bothered a lot of people so much, they've actually gone out of the way to replace the scales entirely. Adding to the cost of the knife overall, and the weight. If you want a Bugout alternative, and you don't have large grab hands. Try the Giant Mouse Iona. You don't get an axis lock, but you get M390 steel and a choice of handle material. For about the same price as a Bugout...
I have the first version of the Condor Kukri with a more traditional kukri shape (12.5” black blade with the Condor eye, specs close to what they are now calling the King Kukri Machete) and IIRC I had to buy the sheath separately. I’ll have to check these out, thanks!
Fighting a grizzly bear with a knife seems like a great way to exit the gene pool. An M1 Abrams main battle tank would probably even the playing field though 👍
Looking for a shmedium folder with a handle size 4” and under and a good blade to handle ratio. Key features I want is high end/premium steel, good slicer, good action, preferably PB washers (not mandatory) and simple design. The WE Banter fits this perfectly and my GiantMouse Ace Riv is another knife I love.
The last guy maybe you should recommend to do as in Russia where they befriend bears and drink with them xD That comment was hilarious. Good video there as usual, David!
Hey there DCA and knifecenter associates... Love the series. Can you do an episode based on all the knives carried by the winners of "Alone"? Or even just discuss the knives some of them chose, and which ones you'd choose for the show? Keep up the great work. Love it all!
I’m a firefighter, not a fan of rescue knives as sometimes a point is necessary. I carry one of those resque me and a pocket knife. At the moment I use a Kershaw Emerson CQC in D2. I’ve also got a really old spyderco with a built in karabiner in the handle and a serrated edge ( I’ve no idea what it is called) which is mostly for water and rope rescue. Also I have no experience with knife fighting a bear but I’d suggest it’s not going to go well for the human!!
Mr Andersen, looking at maybe getting a edc fixed blade. 3.5 - 4.5 inches. With a handle large enough to get a full grip. So that disqualifies a bunch or neck knives. I have to cut a lot of thick card board(corner boards specifically) , for packaging appliances for shipping. So a decent knife steel is a must. What do you you suggest for 125 or less? Box cutters just dont cut it.
It depends on the size of your hands but the Bradford Guardian 3 or 3.5 is IMO EDC perfection..I can get a full grip on either but I don’t have the biggest of hands either..for $125 or less you could get a new one in N690 and could probably find a used one in a better steel for that price..N690 is a lot like VG10..if you don’t mind 1095 carbon steel the ESEE Izula/Izula 2 is also a great EDC fixed blade..the S35VN ESEE 3 or S35VN ESEE Xancudo are also good considerations and can both be found for in that price range
DCA, after recommending the Condor heavy duty Kukri, I'm surprised you didn't recommend a solid tactical back up and useful neck knife in the WE Vaquita. As far as Porky Pig dealing with grizzly bears, The SOG Tiger Shark, The Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII or Natchez Bowie, The Down Under Knives Outback, or The Spartan Blades Harsey are solid choices, but make sure your back up is that WE Vaquita and a 50 AE. And Shorin Ryu Karate kicks ass.
I can’t believe I was accidentally spoiled of season 1 “Alone” winner...my girlfriend and I just started watching it today! Hahaha I might just have to buy a fixed blade...full send?
Speaking as a chef who uses miyabi everyday , they are def more of a delicate beautiful flower of a knife , look into yaxell , enso hd and dragon and also the nexus series of knives for more durable affordable band usable blades in terms of kitchen knives , not that miyabi is bad but they are def more of use with care brand I love them to death but they're more artwork than tool
looking for a knife that has a full finger choil in the blade. mini tough lite is cool, but smaller Handel and thus finger choil should protrude further into the blade portion. So it would be a fun 5th pocket folder, because you could have a 3 finger grip but the closed length would be short. (don't care how short the blade is).
Great episode! Kitchenknives: I got the best chefs knife I could afford. Same German brand has a industrial/cheaper series, where I got a boning knife and 3 small 'utility' blades.
I have the para 3 lightweight and the bugout. I carry the para 3 at work bugout on the weekends. Para 3 feels better in hand bugout better in pocket to me anyways
Someone also asked for a bear fighting knife at my local knife shop here in Colorado, they got all the same answers everyone should get. A) there are none B) 44 mag./maybe and C) whatever knife gives you the most seconds before you are eventually mauled. I think the record is 12.
Please make a bonus video of just your bloopers ... it will be epic! .... and now my question: I now work in an office and have to slim down my carry - any new traditional or modern folders that you would recommend with a suit?
I think the Spyderco Ikuchi,Boker Urban Trapper,Kizer Begleiter and the BladeHQ exclusive CRKT CEO with the S35VN blade and blue micarta scales would be some excellent choices..the Spyderco Chaparral maybe something worth considering as well
The Hogue Deka is an amazing knife, way better than the Bugout..I like the Hogue Doug Ritter a little better than the Deka..both are similar to the Bugout but much better quality
A house truck is just a beater truck you have that stays on the homestead for hauling wood hay etc. And that last answer was just a easy way out, obviously he was asking for a defensive knife to face the armed grizzly gang that’s encroaching on his house truck. The bears say it’s lowering their Forrest value.
I like the 4max and am interested in something close to it as a fixed blade. The context is that the 4max is the actually proportionate for me. Apparently that’s a thing for me. I need heavy knives, I guess. 😁
Hello David, I'm looking for a fixed bladed knife to complement my woods trio, I already possess my dream axe and folding saw, but I would like to upgrade my Mora companion. I have XL hands and would need a pretty large handle but I would like to keep the thin edge and profile of the Mora. Premium steel if possible. I was looking at the Kellam Wolverine... Would appreciate your opinion. Keep up the great work !
Hey David, I have a question I hope you can answer. I am preparing for the coming alien invasion of robot overlords. Can you recommend a knife that can cut through space-aged polymers, as well as serve as a back-up survival and camp knife? Also, it must be 5th pocket carry. I have a budget of $10. What you got?
DCA love the series, and all y’all at KC do! Please do a review of viper knives keeper flipper knife. I’ve been searching for a pocket deployable knife with a deep carry pocket clip for weeks and think I’ve found a knife in this one that checks a lot of boxes for me, but wondering how that model will preform as a pocket deployer. Any other suggestions you may have for a pocket deployable, deep carry, lightweight, slim, 3.5-4 inch range, I’m not opposed to buying an aftermarket dcpc
But the Hogue Deka doesn't weigh under 2.5 ounces. It weighs over 2.6 ounces. It was a brilliant marketing move by Hogue to claim it weighs 2.3 ounces when it doesn't, so that people would mistakenly compare it to the Bugout.
Hey David, same question as last week. Looking for a good edc sized tactical/fighting knife for personal defense. Something in the under 8" size. Fixed blade. Under 200 bucks. Thanks. Really enjoying the series. Great job.
Contact the good people @AG Russell in Springdale! Have them get you a Randall, there’s NONE better! While waiting, buy you a Buck112 with upgraded steel! They’re budget friendly, but I’ve disassembled our smallish AR Whitetails with one, as well as dressed squirrels and small catfish with it, and zero complaints! It’s a “two hand opener & closer” for me @75, but for the money, deal with it😉👍❗️
@@roycolglazier1061 Thanks for the recommendation and the Randall #8 is a very nice knife but out of my budget . But they do have some I like in my budget.
If you’re on a tight budget,I would recommend trying out the CRKT Mossback Bird and Trout knife..it’s in SK5 carbon steel (basically a Japanese equivalent of 1084) with G-10 scales and sales for only $20..the cheap nylon sheath leaves a lot to be desired but it’s well worth $20 without the sheath
Are there ANY very small folders and or slip joint knives with the upper grade steels like the S90V steel at this time or ant in the planning ? Leonard Wells
Hey David, two part question. I have a work sharp sharpener, the handheld field sharpener. And I cannot achieve hair popping sharp when I sharpen with it. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, I get my knives sharp but not hair popping sharp. How can I improve my sharpening skills? I prefer a method without machines because I would like to develop the skill of sharpening. Also how do you determine the angle of the edge of any given knife? I have a Chaves knife that was gifted to me but I’ve never sharpened it because I’m scared to. That knife came wicked Sharp and don’t want to mess up the knife in way. pretty sure my Chaves does not have a 20° angle on it that my worksharp recommends. Thank you
I believe you just need more practice, the work sharp field sharpener is a pretty good sharpener..I don’t blame you for not wanting to try your luck with the Chavez,I would use cheap knives that you dont really care about to hone your skill..the more you practice, the better you will get..I would recommend getting the new work sharp precision sharpener,it kind of hard to find in stock at the moment but it’s starting to get a little easier to find.this sharpener is like a KME style guided sharpening system but unlike the KME and other similar guided sharpening systems,it can be bought for just $50..I would use this sharpening system for the Chavez and other higher end knives you don’t want to take any chances on screwing up the edge on and I would continue honing my skills on the field sharpener with cheaper knives...I would also recommend getting a leather strop and some stropping compound.stropping can help bring your edge up to the next level.if you strop you knives often you can keep a good sharp edge without having to take a stone to it...I know the field sharpener has the built in strop which is better than nothing but it leaves a lot to be desired.its quite impressive what one can achieve with a good strop and stropping compound
Garrett Ferrell Thank you for the great reply sir. I’ve seen the sharpener you are referring to great recommendation . As for the strop since this is the first one I used I didn’t know the difference, Ill look into upgrading. Thank you
Hi DCA, I've finally completed my kitchen knife set from shun classic (got them piece by piece took a couple of years) but the only thing I'm missing is a cleaver. Shun knives are great, super hard steel and can take a real acute edge great for slicing, but they can get a bit chippy and their cleaver seems to be the same way. Can you suggest a true chopping cleaver that is not too wide and has the same styling as shun classic so it does not be out of place with my current set. Thanks for the amazing content.
I saw a doc on ka-bar and it basically said the name came from someone trying to Kill A- BeAR... so I'd suggest the usmc mk whatever it's called...yall know the knife already haha
Hi David :) I have been carrying slip joints for 60 years and have recently gotten into a few modern style budget knives. I recently purchased a Ruger LCK reverse tanto ( made by CRKT) that I really like. I thought I understood blade shapes on slip joints but reverse tanto, sheepsfoot and wharncliffe seem to be almost interchangeable on modern knives depending on the manufacturer. Can you recommend a better budget reverse tanto or similar style than the one I have? Thank you. I really enjoy your videos and knife knowledge. :)
Hey David, I'm looking for a large (6-10in) knife for batoning and chopping firewood when camping, to carry with my mora garberg. My favorite models so far are either ESEEs in 1095 and Condors in 1075. Can you talk about the pros/cons of these metals for this purpose, and maybe throw in specific model recommendations?
I like your channel GREAT info! Also like your homemade strop but why do you use the Spyderco in the kitchen and how does it compare to the similar Work Sharp ? Your website beats blade HQ prices.
The Spyderco is in the kitchen because it is super quick and easy to touch up my steak knives and my cheaper kitchen knives that still live there. My customs get the strop. -DCA
Not gonna lie, Coarser looks nice and Ill propably get one. But, its a little disapointig that they just took the easy way and its just Zombie Kharon Tanto in different colors.
if Benchmade makes the BugOut with more budget-level steel, like AUS-8, or 14C28N (like Kershaw Skyline) would have appealed to a lot more demography... I don't mind or care for super steels - they're nice but unless they're 100% corrosion resistant like Spyderco's salt line-up, then give me a steel that is durable and easy to maintain that doesn't cost so much
Got another question I have a 3 year old that sees all my cool knives and wants to have a knife like his Papa. He wants a blue knife any suggestions? Thanks David!
I’m curious what DCA will say but might I recommend the CRKT “Nathan’s Knife Kit.” Its a wooden lock back knife you sand, stain (if you want) and assemble. A fantastic weekend project for an adult and kid to work on together. I made one with my youngest when he was 4 and he loved the project and his finished knife. It’s great for teaching about knives and knife safety.
Yes. They. Are. Had one O’ those PsOS, that deployed in my jeans, then self destructed, in the laundry one day, shortly after unboxing! Their warranty “service” was so convoluted that I trashed the pieces, vowing to NEVER again own a CS product!
Hi David. I’ve been wanting the purchase a boning knife ever since you did the turkey carving video a few years back. You used a Wusthof knife with a trailing blade. I was going to get that one but then I saw the Benchmade Meatcrafter. Since you are an expert around the kitchen and handled both knives, do you have any recommendations? Thank you.
The Meatcrafter is nice, a little bit larger, and the rubber handles will be nice when dealing with meat juices. Definitely the "enthusiasts" choice. -DCA
I'm An amateur vegan cook that owns three Miyabi Cutlery knives. They are easy to sharpen and maintain. I highly recommend them.
I bought the Condor HD kukri five years ago & I've put it through hardcore outdoor tasks & it survived it all.

Mercer Culinary offers a lot better value, in my opinion. I think most of their lines are made in Taiwan.

Or use a mouse pad as an underlay to the sand paper.
Wow! That Sebenza is fantastic looking! Thank you for showing it DCA! I will be ordering the Ka-Bar folder though for sure! I like the way it looks.
You from Mars PA by any chance
For an alternative to the bugout with strong lock you can look at the air lite from cold steel.
I’ve been using a para 3 lightweight every day for over a year now and it’s kept all my other knives in the box! Perfect edc for me.
I agree,PM2 and PM3 are EDC perfection..IMO they are the absolute best user folders on the market..plus I love the fact Spyderco puts out their knives in many different high quality steels

A concept can inspire simularties but also provoke backlash. My favorite anti- bugout, the 4 max scout.
First off loving this series, second on that KC Exclusive Hogue Deka we NEED the Wharnie version in the red G10
Would love to see you do a mid level kitchen knife set series
Awesome video and awesome looking knives I really like the condor heavy duty kukri
Great product but Condor is in the vicinity of Cold Steel with that bill boarding.

The regular worksharp k&t sharpener can be got for about 60 bucks or so. Great tool for such a meager price tag
I recently got the new work sharp precision sharpener which is like a KME except it was only $50..It’s pretty great too
Any chance we could have a video on recurve blades? Pro, cons and maybe some recommendations?
Already laughing and I'm only at the logo....reminds me of one of my classes I'm teaching.
The Condor K Tac Kukri is a redesign by Alan Kay from Alone.
Davy Crockett would just grin down that bear.😁
DCA, after recommending the Condor heavy duty Kukri, I'm surprised you didn't recommend a solid tactical back up and useful neck knife in the WE Vaquita. As far as Porky Pig dealing with grizzly bears, The SOG Tiger Shark, The Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII or Natchez Bowie, The Down Under Knives Outback, or The Spartan Blades Harsey are solid choices, but make sure your back up is that WE Vaquita and a 50 AE. And Shorin Ryu Karate kicks ass.
Loving the human elements that the conversation and the mistakes add to the video! Hahaha
I can’t believe I was accidentally spoiled of season 1 “Alone” winner...my girlfriend and I just started watching it today! Hahaha
I might just have to buy a fixed blade...full send?
The answer, for any question, is almost always: “buy a fixed blade”
Send it -DCA
I would add the cold steel air lite to the list as well.
Civivi baby banter has a very nice finger choil the blade is small tho
Great episode! Kitchenknives: I got the best chefs knife I could afford. Same German brand has a industrial/cheaper series, where I got a boning knife and 3 small 'utility' blades.
Best Bugout alternative : Buck 112 slim pro, sturdier, cheaper, s30v Bos HT, 70gr
I think the Spyderco Ikuchi,Boker Urban Trapper,Kizer Begleiter and the BladeHQ exclusive CRKT CEO with the S35VN blade and blue micarta scales would be some excellent choices..the Spyderco Chaparral maybe something worth considering as well
Check out the Viper Key! kcoti.com/3pKpS2S
the hogue deka is just a solid looking knife. i need to get one.
The Hogue Deka is an amazing knife, way better than the Bugout..I like the Hogue Doug Ritter a little better than the Deka..both are similar to the Bugout but much better quality
I interchange my para 3 lw with my bugout a ton as the para has a superior handle to the bugout by far.
Gerber sedulo ia good option to the bugout aswell.
I put a convex grind in my pm2 with a dmt plate
The perfect knife for fighting a grizzly comes with a barrel and 44magnum freedom pellets ;) or if you wanna go cheaper a 10mm
For fighting grizzlies I guess a firearm would be the best choice..
Or a big ol dagger style knife
How about a lightsaber? :)
I pray I never have to attempt to take on a grizzly bear with a knife of any kind or even a sword...I’ll just have to spray and pray with my 9mm
Yes!..I was wondering what happened to the outtakes... 😁
The last question tho 🤣🤣🤣🤣😅 was really wanting to know your response to that one!!!
A little coffee will put out that fire, dave..
Great job.
The best knife foe fighting a Grizzlie is a gun. A big gun. From far far away.
HI I am looking for a good quality bird and trout knife. Could you make some recommendation .
Contact the good people @AG Russell in Springdale! Have them get you a Randall, there’s NONE better! While waiting, buy you a Buck112 with upgraded steel! They’re budget friendly, but I’ve disassembled our smallish AR Whitetails with one, as well as dressed squirrels and small catfish with it, and zero
complaints!
Thanks a bunch.
Leather strop, polishing compound and a sharpie. Not in that order
Garrett Ferrell Thank you for the great reply sir. I’ve seen the sharpener you are referring to great recommendation . As for the strop since this is the first one I used I didn’t know the difference, Ill look into upgrading. Thank you
Stuart B thank you!
And like that, the Sebenza is sold out at KC.
I saw a doc on ka-bar and it basically said the name came from someone trying to Kill A- BeAR... so I'd suggest the usmc mk whatever it's called...yall know the knife already haha
Yeah, David. I’ve bought around fifty knives this year. How do I stop?
You won't know if it is too many until you hit at least 200... ought to get there by August at your rate. Get back to us then :D -DCA
How about a Becker BK9?
@@sheltermonkey6065 Not in love with the full blackout aesthetic of the Ka-bar BKs, but it looks like they have a big fan base
Yo David, thank you on your recommendation on Due Cigni kitchen knives. I got myself the Chef 200 & Chef 250.Those are great some great knives.
Glad you like them! -DCA
Hey DCA (and Thomas), if you could pick any knife for a KC exclusive what would you pick and what steel & handle would you use?
An ontario or ka-bar bowie knife should work on that bear
I like your channel GREAT info! Also like your homemade strop but why do you use the Spyderco in the kitchen and how does it compare to the similar Work Sharp ? Your website beats blade HQ prices.
The Spyderco is in the kitchen because it is super quick and easy to touch up my steak knives and my cheaper kitchen knives that still live there. My customs get the strop. -DCA
Not gonna lie, Coarser looks nice and Ill propably get one. But, its a little disapointig that they just took the easy way and its just Zombie Kharon Tanto in different colors.
DCA are their any knives with pry bars intergraded into them either in the handle or a second blade. under 100 $? thanks
if Benchmade makes the BugOut with more budget-level steel, like AUS-8, or 14C28N (like Kershaw Skyline) would have appealed to a lot more demography...
Rob Bernhard thank you for the recommendation!
Just when I’m actually starting to like the bug out...
Don't. They are overpriced, flimsy pieces of junk.
Yes. They. Are.
Had one O’ those PsOS, that deployed in my jeans, then self destructed, in the laundry one day, shortly after unboxing! Their warranty “service” was so convoluted that I trashed the pieces, vowing to NEVER again own a CS product!
@@roycolglazier1061 CS product?
As in Cold Steel?
The Bugout is Benchmade....
WHOOPS, meant Bench Made, hadda brain fart! @75 they happen, but my bad & didn’t mean to confuse! Thanks for the corrective...😁👍❗️
-DCA
