DCA, I enjoy pairing a modern folder primary knife with a traditional as a secondary. This gives me an excuse to carry more knives and lets me "cover more bases". Can you recommend some primary/secondary knife pairings with complementary designs, aesthetic, blade shapes, blade steels, functions, etc.?
I like doing a big/small carry. Usually a standard sized folder paired with a fifth pocket sized option, I was using a button lock Elementum and a Sog Cash Card but have since then moved onto carrying a Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 combo, but I'm considering opting for a fixie in the future for the small carry.
Police departments don't issue knives. Certain military units do. I believe currently Ontario knives are the typical issued knives. Basically the kabar style knife just a different company.
There are about a dozen knives in the military/federal supply system that I know of. They include the Benchmade AFO auto, Gerber Applegate combat folder, various bayonets, the Air Force and Army aircrew survival knives, and a few Gerber multitools. The bayonet and survival knives are issued by units to persons deemed to need them. Some units may chose to purchase and issue folders, but 90% of the time service members carry what ever knives they can buy at the PX or elsewhere at their own expense.
I love my full size Adamas (The exact model shown in video) as my EDC carry, when I'm not carrying that I usually carry my s35vn QSP Penguin with the marble carbon fiber scales. My Food knife is my customized blackout Opinel No.9 Carbone. The knives I hand to people if they need to make a quick cut are my Spyderco tenacious, Civivi Baklash, and my CRKT Folts Minimalist cleaver. The knife I use the least is the ZT 0450 Sinkevich as it was my first $100+ knife and a gift. Other than that I have an old AK bayonet with bakelite handle that just sits around not doing anything.

For fixed blades I used a TOPS Mil-Spie 5 & Ontario/Ranger RD6 both solid knives can be used for rescues, forced entries etc. Not interested in anything fancy must be tough & reliable. 2) For tip/soft pruning I use a Delica. DCA and KC staff, Hi folks. I really appreciate the work all of you put into your programs and really look forward to when new episodes come out! Anyways, I picked up a couple of Mora blade blanks and was looking to make a handle for one from a deer antler we found out back, as well as one from some walnut that we had taken down a few years ago. Any tips for finishing these up such as using a bolster/guard vs ferrule or pins vs epoxy? Thanks in advance and I sincerely wish you guys all the luck in the world with your projects going forward.

Neither do I. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a personal preference. I’ve carried both, alternating between them day to day- I think as long as you know by feel which one it is when you put your hand on it, it’s not an issue. I can open mine at the same speed, as long as you’re not looking frame by frame and at hundredths of a second, etc. You can’t tell that stuff without technological devices anyway, so it’s more just to give people something to argue about. As long as you’re comfortable and safe with what you’re carrying, it’s totally a personal preference.

Hey, DCA and crew, great job on the videos! I've got a KniFAQ question. I've recently done some studying on my genealogy and discovered that I had ancestors from Goteborg, Sweden. I think it'd be cool to honor that heritage in my EDC, so I was looking for information on any Swedish knifemakers. I already know about Morakniv, but was wondering if there are any good, folding, EDC knives originating in Sweden. Alternatively, are there other traditional knives manufactured in Sweden and available in the U.S.? Thanks!

Hey DCA, I am very new to the knife scene but your videos have me on the verge of becoming a collector... thanks! :D Just wondering what your recommendations would be for the best fidget friendly/most satisfying action folding knifes would be in say a more budget price range, mid range and at the money no object range. They don't need to be hard working (just used to open boxes and stuff) but having something that feels good to play with is a must! Thinking pretty much anything except a balisong... feel like I would definitely hurt myself with one of those. Cheers!
Hey DCA hope you enjoyed your time off! We definitely missed those larger then average hands! But my question is looking for a machete nothing to big or ridiculous, but something that will get the job done and will fit into a day pack for hiking. Currently looking at the cold steel kukri, and the tops 170. 10” 1095.
Hi DCA, what are the best knives that are underpriced? not necessarily budget but a knife that you think should cost more becues of a high end materials, good construction or design.
They are good at holding a lot of blade in a small folded package (easy on the pockets) and when open are less likely to fold closed on your hands in the event of a failure.
I am having tons of fun with my CJRB Kicker, but I find it pretty heavy for a knife that size. Are there other knives with the combination of crossbar lock and flipper tab that you would recommend? Your site doesn't make it easy to search based on those parameters.
I served in the U.S. Army and at least in the bases I worked at, most soldiers bought knives because they thought they were cool and they looked cool. As for the Benchmade Adamas, that is wicked cool tactical folder but I can't see myself paying $238 for one. Could you show us a similar folder for around $100?
Hi DCA & Seth - any suggestions for a grey man knife? Something that goes unnoticed but is very capable for both EDC & tactical type uses? Ideally not automatic or assisted, and ~middle size blade (3.25 - 3.75 inches). Looking forward to hearing what you come up with! Thanks!
Thanks for another great video. After looking at David's favorite SAK, the S18 looks interesting. Looks very similar to my favorite, the Fieldmaster. Although without the parcel hook. I rarely(never) use the hook, but would appreciate the main locking blade. I will be shopping soon. Thanks
Hey DCA, Buck is known for getting more performance out of their 420HC bladed knives than other manufacturers because of their heat treatment. Are there other knife maker/steel combos you can recommend as getting a little more performance out of a given material?
My wife showed some interests in carrying a knife but her requirements are very different than mine. Her main concern is ease of opening and closing, safety from closing the blade on her fingers, and small size-possibly goes on a keychain. I was thinking a small Victorinox or maybe Spyderco dragonfly/lady bug? Thank you!
Hey DCA, can you explain the difference (if there is) between spring assisted folders and switch blade/automatic folders? I live in a state where I cant EDC a automatic or switch blade, i just dont know if spring assisted counts or not. Thanks for the feedback and love the vids 👍
Here is some goon info on the difference. www.knifecenter.com/best-products/best-switchblades-automatic-knives As to whether spring assist counts as an automatic, the answer should be no, but sometimes local laws can complicate the truth. Always check your local regs. Wish I could be more helpful! -DCA
Hey David, I love the KniFAQ videos. I have a question about the music, especially at the end, I love the bass line being a bass player myself. Just wondering if you are a musician, I somehow picture you as a musician? Was that music done in-house? Just curious to know how many of the team and the Knife Centre are musicians? Anyway, keep up the good shows!
Hi David C. Andersen, I would like to know when the concept of edc came about and what were the first folding knives to be produced within this concept. Thank you very much. R. Bucci.
Hey DCA What should be my first $200 + folder? My collection is 16 pieces deep currently with most of them in the $50 - $80 range as I tried to determine what types of mechanisms and materials I prefer, which was fruitless because I like them all. That said I prefer knives with more than one opening method as I like having a way to open it slowly should I need to. And I don't want anything too tactical looking. Thanks
DCA, really enjoy the show, and thank you for your hard work! My question is, is that i am looking for preferably a folder "hawkbill style" knife to strip wires. Usually bigger wires. It has to be tough and hold a good edge. Im curious to see the same, however in a fixed blade as well. Thanks again, and good luck! 🇺🇸
DCA, seeing all these new, beautiful knives come out, there are quite a few that don't offer lefty pocket clips. Do you know why so many manufacturers omit this from their designs? Also, any suggestions for pocket carry as a lefty with a right only clip? Love the videos, keep up the great work!
Hey DCA, I am looking for a smaller sized edc that has some attitude. I’m between the hogue microflip 1 and the benchmade presidio 2 mini. I honestly can’t decide any suggestions. I know you love the factory edge on the hogues but I’m also liking the deep carry pocket clip on the benchmade. I have never had a knife from either company. Help!
The Benchmade will give you a little more blade/capability and I do like the clip better. The Hogue has that sub-3 inch blade and machine-like precision. Which of those descriptions strikes your fancy more? Go with that one :) -DCA

Hey DCA, I NEED HELP!!! I am getting into knives and the first high end knife that I bought is the Spyderco Advocate with the M4 blade, which is not so good vs corrosion, I always put WD-40 to prevent corrosion but it stills rust a little bit, so I have 2 questions. How to take off the little particles of corrosion without scratching the blade and what is the best type of oil to use to avoid corrosion. Thank you!
WD-40 is a water dispersant, but there are far better things for protecting from corrosion. Barkeeper's Friend to remove the spots, and Tuf Cloth for protection. -DCA www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_store.html?usrsearch=tufcloth&kcno=123
Hi DCA and Seth, thanks for your work! Do you happen to know if there’s any chance that Spyderco or Benchmade make CPM MagnaCut available in their regular production knives some day?
Good morning DCA, I want to know if there is a company that make handle scales for the Benchmade Adamas? I recently purchased one and the para-crap simply does not cut it as handle material. Thank you. J.P.
If you get mugged, you’re probably going to prefer having the benchmade adamas rather than trying to defend yourself with a case trapper. Some people seem to just not understand that you need lethal tools in order to protect yourself. You never know when that tactical knife could save your life (no rhyme intended)

I love this series. I like to save up a bunch of them and have it on the tv while I'm cleaning house before weekend guests.
Hey DCA, I am very new to the knife scene but your videos have me on the verge of becoming a collector... thanks! :D
Just wondering what your recommendations would be for the best fidget friendly/most satisfying action folding knifes would be in say a more budget price range, mid range and at the money no object range. They don't need to be hard working (just used to open boxes and stuff) but having something that feels good to play with is a must! Thinking pretty much anything except a balisong... feel like I would definitely hurt myself with one of those. Cheers!
Channel your inner barbarian..that "axe" was awesome...lol
Dca I’m looking for a double edge blade fixed knife I have seen the kabar ek model 4 but I’m not sure if that’s the way to go can you recommend one?
The Ek daggers are nice and robust. Also check out the Boker Applegate-Fairbairn daggers: kcoti.com/38vXLxX
Hey DCA hope you enjoyed your time off! We definitely missed those larger then average hands! But my question is looking for a machete nothing to big or ridiculous, but something that will get the job done and will fit into a day pack for hiking. Currently looking at the cold steel kukri, and the tops 170. 10” 1095.
Check out these survival machetes. Perfect size for packability: ua-cam.com/video/MiudT82SR_0/v-deo.html
Hi DCA, what are the best knives that are underpriced? not necessarily budget but a knife that you think should cost more becues of a high end materials, good construction or design.
Dave! Where ya been buddy? If possible, I would like to see a vid about all 4 inch blades, both fixed and folders….
DCA - I have been thinking about buying a Bali Song for a while. Besides the cool factor, what practical purpose would a Bali Song serve?
You could practice first aid on yourself while learning to deploy it and fidgeting with it!
They are good at holding a lot of blade in a small folded package (easy on the pockets) and when open are less likely to fold closed on your hands in the event of a failure.
@@knifecenter that is an excellent point! No pun intended.
I am having tons of fun with my CJRB Kicker, but I find it pretty heavy for a knife that size. Are there other knives with the combination of crossbar lock and flipper tab that you would recommend? Your site doesn't make it easy to search based on those parameters.
I like that push dagger though I’m not a huge fan of sarateeted edges
Thanks!
Hey DCA, I need a big chopper/survival knives what will you advise. 😁👊 Greetings. 😁👍👍
ESEE is great at choppers
@@TheBudgetguy_K.T I like RTAKII. And ESEE 6.😁👍 Thanks. 😁👊
Thanks
Any news from new Benchmade products?
I like the hatchet knife at the end
Hey DCA, Buck is known for getting more performance out of their 420HC bladed knives than other manufacturers because of their heat treatment. Are there other knife maker/steel combos you can recommend as getting a little more performance out of a given material?
1095, gets a small boost from cryogenic heat treatment Nitro V gets a big boost from it other than that idk
Thank you!
Hard to go wrong with the Dragonfly -DCA
Hey DCA, can you explain the difference (if there is) between spring assisted folders and switch blade/automatic folders? I live in a state where I cant EDC a automatic or switch blade, i just dont know if spring assisted counts or not. Thanks for the feedback and love the vids 👍
Assisted is not classed as automatic.
Here is some goon info on the difference. www.knifecenter.com/best-products/best-switchblades-automatic-knives
As to whether spring assist counts as an automatic, the answer should be no, but sometimes local laws can complicate the truth. Always check your local regs. Wish I could be more helpful! -DCA
I really like the green polo better than the maroon. Good on you, DCA!
Hey David n Seth, any suggestions for a good folder for filleting fish??
Alot of cold steel up there today. I love it
Could you recommend a fixed blade that would work well for camping/hunting and would also work well in the kitchen? Thanks

@@knifecenter that looks nice. Thanks!
DCA, what's the best sub 3 inch titanium flipper with a drop point that has adequate steel for edc and won't break the bank?
Hi David C. Andersen, I would like to know when the concept of edc came about and what were the first folding knives to be produced within this concept. Thank you very much. R. Bucci.
I might have went for the Voyager Vaquero XL over the Kris, but you can't beat a Cold Steel for intimidation factor
That adamus.. Isn't it assisted?
There are manual and automatic versions, but no assisted versions. -DCA
@@knifecenter I pulled the trigger on the benchmade, thanks for the advice. Now I just wait for the little orange box!

-DCA

Hi DCA and Seth, thanks for your work! Do you happen to know if there’s any chance that Spyderco or Benchmade make CPM MagnaCut available in their regular production knives some day?
Surprised the Cold Steel xl folders didn’t dominate the intimidation segment.
Good morning DCA, I want to know if there is a company that make handle scales for the Benchmade Adamas? I recently purchased one and the para-crap simply does not cut it as handle material. Thank you. J.P.
Not that I know of but that would be cool to see. -DCA
If you get mugged, you’re probably going to prefer having the benchmade adamas rather than trying to defend yourself with a case trapper. Some people seem to just not understand that you need lethal tools in order to protect yourself. You never know when that tactical knife could save your life (no rhyme intended)
I always have a fixed blade on me whether it's tiny or large for self defense or more likely snakes lol
Hey DCA, I really enjoy carrying a traditional pocket knife for whittling and carving, my current whittler is a Congress style Boker, but recently I've really enjoyed some scandi blades for carving. Do you have any recommendations for a scandi style folder, the more traditional and puuko-like the better.
Tha Casstrom Lars Falt folder: kcoti.com/3sWBDGJ
Hawkbill especially fully serrated versions just lock into boxes and taped up boxes, the best for it my experience.
I live in an urban city and am going to work in an office environment, do you have any recommendations for a lightweight knife that is on the smaller end and also good for slicing? Thanks!
Great eastern cutlery or similar "old fashioned" slip joint knives won't scare the Karen's
Alternatively a higonakami is cool and a little less boring since the real ones are hand made from japan
@Paul Smith oh yeah LOL you're right
What is your pick if you are trying to find a budget (below 100usd) knife that feels more expensive in the hand.
Nothing beats a Felco bypass pruner… my wife has them all over the yard so they are never far away.
hello DCA
i have a traditional knife in 4116 steel which i love and adore alot but the issue with it is that its not as slicey as it used to be when i bought it i mean i could get it shaving sharp but not as slicey as my other knife aka paper gliding
did i screw up the sharpening or did i gave it a conved edge accidentally
i hope you help me with this one
Yo DCA, looking for a cool fix blade for EDC. Preferably scout carry. Any suggestions?
What knife has caged washers or bearings? I build bridges and I work around a lot of dirt and sand. My pivot constantly gets gunked up.
Maybe a smaller fixed blade would be more suitable for you I think. Mora, BokerPlus, White river, Ruike, Benchmade, SOG, etc.
Oh… Just realized that CRKT has some folders offering easy disassemble-assemble (by hand) method. One was the Homefront. I think in some cases easy disassembling and cleaning is more beneficial.
It’d be really cool to have a beginners guide on buying your first custom/mid-tech
Hey David, I am New to Knife Center, and LOVING IT! Ive always thought SMKW was the only place to go and now I found you guys!! Ok My Question in the $200-$300 Range what are your Favorite and best Value picks for a Folder and for a Fixed Blade Knife? Thank you - Will C
Currently I find myself edc'ing the Kershaw Shuffle 2 Tanto for it's lightweight and multi functional use, any suggestions for a similar knife if better quality? Thanks in advance
What the Government generally provides tends to be the cheapest option. Ask anyone who's worked with "military grade" products.
The CRKT Otanashi Noh Ken, if flicked open by someone clearly willing to use it, looks pretty intimidating. But since my knife use is not as a weapon and is sometimes pretty rough, I’ll keep using my good old Al Mar SERE2000.
Hi dca is m9 Ontario bayonet a good companion for hiking/camping if you don't mind the weight?
And also thanks for your very helpful and useful videos
Legit question; my 5 year old Godson wants a knife, as an avid knife user myself I am 100% for it, i even went over the do's and don't of knife ownership. What would you recommend for small hands to use while out camping/fishing? He's carried a Swiss army knife but he found it too bulky (tiny pants pockets lol). Ty!
How about trying a neck knife like a crkt minimalist. Or Le Duck.
Will knife center restock the exclusive dragonfly in hap 40 in the future?
Production is backed up, but yes it will be back at some point in the future -DCA
@@knifecenter awesome 👌
Wish I could carry a double edged blade! Unfortunately my state and the two states I border don’t allow any kind of dagger
What about a single edged sharp dagger like blade?
@@TheBudgetguy_K.T not sure if that would be ok either. The laws are loosely worded but it is clear that you can’t conceal carry a knife designed for use as a weapon or carried to be used as a weapon. And my border states, push daggers are listed as completely illegal to carry
@@glassjar7814 well if you don't conceal it would a neck knife work? Like an outdoor edge Le Duck

David knows a lot of stuff but nothing about defensive knife use.

For DCA and Seth, if you could pick one knife design to be produced by a different company than who is currently making it, what would the knife be, who would be the new manufacturer, and why? Thanks!

Hi DCA,
Long time watcher, first time caller. I will soon be working with a custom knife maker to have a fixed blade of my design made. Just curious what types of questions do you think I should be asking throughout the process? Thanks in advance!
But honestly who starts fires with a bow drill for practice?
People who want to be able to do it when it's not for practice.
@@Regolith86 so many other better ways to start a fire. Guess if you're freezing to death and shaking violently the bow drill is great way to warm up.
@@Bigdaddyslasher I generally agree, which is why I don't bother with bow drills. But people who do want to be able to start a fire that way have to practice it, because it's a skill you have to learn if you want it to work reliably in a real survival situation.
