It was in my last 2 Bibles that I began creating a "system" for my colors. That began when I did an in-depth study of the verses that parallel the OT and the NT. (My gosh, that was so much fun!) I used a rusty orange for all of those. Then I did a study on the Sovereignty of God and used blue for all of that. That was the beginning of Theming the Word for me. It's addicting! Now I have a whole handful of colors with their own themes. I am still fine tuning those, and I think I'm about there now. We'll see. So here is where I am.... after a lifetime of using various markers, fancy highlighters, pencils, and pens.... I have found that my absolute favorite are ... (drumroll) ... Micron 005 for underlining. And cheap colored pencils for all the colorwork. They are not only CHEAP, but they are Bright and have ZERO bleed through. Absolute perfection. Jason, you GOTTA try colored pencils! Just the cheap Crayola ones at the dollar store. Or generic no-name ones. Or the LiquiMark ones. Oh, and the Crayola "Extreme Colors" are deliciously neon. I use all of those. So here are my themes: God the Father (Purple, as in King). Jesus Christ (Blue, as in Royal). Holy Spirit (Neon Orange). Wisdom (Golden Yellow). Salvation, Faith, and misc special verses (Bright Yellow). Christian Living (Green, as in grass-home). Protection, Courage, Strength (Aqua, sorta like armor). Love, Grace, Mercy, Peace (Pink). Sin (Brown, as in dirty). Warnings & Judgment (Red, as in blood).
Sure, I'd be happy to. The colors having thematic meanings. For myself, I use: *Yellow = Special Things (favorite verses that make me go WOW). *Blue = God the Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit *Red = Warnings, and Judgment *Purple = Grace, Mercy, Peace, etc *Pink = Love *Green = Christian Living (reminds me of grass and the home) *Brown = Sin, Rebellion *Black and Grey = Historical Data and Info. Often used at the start of a book. *Orange = is sort of a generic color I use when nothing else fits. I also like it for Original Language Word Studies. That's pretty much it. Because I am me, I cannot be happy with only one of each color, so I have a handful in each color family. This is especially helpful in the Blues for God. I have favorites for each member of the Trinity. It takes time to get your colors just the way you want them. Some of these (like green for Christian Living, Yellow for Special Verses, or Pink for Love) goes back through decades of my own Bible marking.
I've been using this system for at least the last 30 yrs. And - I always use yellow for "anything I like that doesn't fit in a category". Keep up the good work and it's nice to know there are fellow bible nerds out there :)
Teresa Sanchez, just give it a try. With your creativeness, you can come back and teach me some things! Always willing to learn something creative and fresh!
I love your channel. Your videos are informative and fun! I am renewing myself to Christ after 32 years and I feel this need for learning MORE. I can’t wait to watch more videos
Thank you so much for creating videos!! I’ve taken your suggestions, and created my marking system. It has made a world of difference in my studying the Bible! Through God’s grace and your helpful suggestions , I’m learning so much more when I read my a Bible! Thank you and God bless you!!
I'm using a fairly simple system: Jesus' Commandments highlighted in blue (blue means do!) God's promises highlighted in pink (pink for promises!) Scripture associated with healing highlighted in orange (orange you feeling better?) Words or text that pops out to me highlighted in yellow (hello, yellow!) For applications, I'll write up a prayer in a journal related to what I've been reading.
Hey, Brother, I just wanted to tell you how much I love your channel. You’re seriously a fun (and funny) fellow, and your videos tend to give me a lot of encouragement on different ways to study the Bible. God bless you, my sweet Brother in Christ. I hope and pray that more people will be brought to this channel. You definitely deserve it.
I like the Micron pens because they come in lots of different colors and don't bleed through my Bible page - I also love using colored pencils which I use for highlighting
MLLatUtube ya know what... I’m actually getting frustrated with the microns. 😒 Just today I was thinking I need to make a change. But... I don’t know what else will let me write that small. 😩
UPDATE: I use a cheap set ($9 U Brands) of gel pens from Big Lot and a generic ball-point black or blue pen (depends on how I am feeling that day). I underline with the gel pens and rarely use highlighters in my main Bible which is a burgundy NASB by the Lockman Foundation. (I just love my Bible) SN: I use to use either the KJV or the NKJV but now my favorite is the NASB. My color code system is BLUE = blessings/promises from God/Jesus, GREEN = instruction.commands for righteous living, RED = warning/punishment/anything against God, RED ? = any questions i may have, ORANGE = God speaking/referring to the Law, PINK = God's people/the Elect/Children of God, YELLOW = interesting facts/things that stick out to me, LIGHT GOLD = God's character/qualities, DARK GOLD = Jesus, COPPER = Holy Spirit, SILVER= when "Do Not Be Afraid" is mentioned, PURPLE = my favorite text/if something resonates with me, BLACK CIRCLES/SQUARES = peoples' name/place, PURPLE CIRCLE OR ORANGE CIRCLES = words I am studying. I have had this system since I got my NASB last year and it has been working so well for me.
Post-it notes...how cool. I had not thought of that! I've considered using a piece of paper for each book, or even a small note book marked with the books, but postits can be moved around! I have a few bibles I've been add thru my walk. Going thru them is like looking at a time capsule....I need to go thru each one and copy all the notes into a notebook...
Hello Grace for Life, I use the same color coding system in both my Journaling Bible (NKJV) which I do my personal Bible study. I also use the NASB as my chronological reading plan Bible which I use the same color coding system. All my Bible use the same color coding system, my KJV Study Bible and my Amplified Bible. I use only U Brands Gel Pens for underlining in my NASB along with some hearts or small icon stickers for things that speak to me. As for my Journaling Bible I study the same as you do with all the colors (Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils), arrows from the scriptures and boxes in the 2 inch margins. I love of my Bibles (especially my Journaling Bible & my NASB) and my color coding system, which took me a couple of times to find what works for me. Oh side note: You are the reason I purchased the NASB, I watched your video about which one was better, the ESV or the NASB? I went the same day I watch because I wanted a Bible just read and once I read from them both, the NASB just spoke to me. I love the way it flows. Thanks for your videos, very informative and enjoyable! God's continued blessings!
I like the frixion color pens. They are erasable! In the past, I have used colored pencils, but some brands do not erase well. Jason, I love your sense of humor!
A note on the frixion pens...I did an entire paper in these, and left it on the back window ledge of my car. The heat of the sun made the whole thing disappear!! I put it in the freezer for a while and it reappeared...sort of. Just be aware!
I have used just three colours and a yellow highlighter, like forever, being colour blind, all my notes are in Blue as that really stands out, green for any Greek/Hebrew notes, and red for really important stuff I've looked up. And my 'where at' is Manchester, England.
If your color blind, how does the green and red work for you. An an FYI : special glasses are available on Amazon that allow color blind people to see color. Some are under $100. www.amazon.com/Pilestone-Glasses-TP-006-Aviators-Blindness/dp/B01MS6NJV5/ref=sr_1_4?crid=AJ2OFRI6YV5B&keywords=colorblind+glasses&qid=1555478759&s=beauty&sprefix=color+blind%2Cbeauty%2C167&sr=8-4
Forget who the author was, but she said she highlighted what she learned about God in yellow (resembling a ‘golden nugget ‘), and anything she learned about being a godly woman (wife/mother) in pink. Don’t know if that part was random or just feminine. I like that. But I don’t mark in my bibles anymore because I always end up not knowing why something was marked, then it’s just a distraction. However, when I see others’ marked up bibles, I just admire them (the person and their bible) so much. I find myself switching bibles a lot. I have a storage bin full.
Thanks for making me feel more structured in my note making. I think context is critical in understanding the bible. I live a long way from the 1st century and even further from Abram's culture. I actually make notes to help me with that. I want to meet the people of the bible so I can better understand their interaction with God . I can then apply it better to my life. So my categories are culture/customs Geography Covenants Cross reference Faith/Action And my favorite. I am weaving a scarlet thread thru the old testament by noting those individuals in the lineage of Christ. General note
I giggled at this a little more than I should have. Lol. Thanks for the ideas. I love the Inkjoy pens, but never thought about using them in my Bible. I will now.
I started with a pen &/or pencil & regular highlighters 21 years ago. Now, it's all about the Microns ;) My favorite highlights for the Bible are these skinny, black, Stabilos, but I can't always find them easily, so I bounce around now. I tired the gel, not in love. I just bought a pack of Zebra mildliners, but am nervous to try them in my current premium Bibles. When I finally get the Cambridge wide-margin, I'll probably use them, even if I still haven't used them in the others.
Lol I just use a blue ball point pen.. but I love making notes in my Bible so I am gonna start using some sticky notes as well to jot down certain questions and thoughts..
I've bought a lot of different ultra fine pens. I was never happy with the little bleed through. That's when I discovered colored pencils don't bleed at all! I love using mechanical colored pencils. Game changer for me.
I'm new to your channel and love it. I use Frixon pens because I need to be able to erase. I get no bleed-through. I use Accu-Gel highlighters. My color system is purple for God, yellow for favorite scriptures, pink for a command, green for promises, blue for warnings, and orange for randomness.
i use red for Blood/ cross of Jesus, brown for history/historical background, yellow light; navy blue for references on sea and navigation; purple for power and authority of the believer; green for Sin orange for personal application; and I use symbols for covenant, dove for Holy Spirit; crown for Kingdom;
I started with the micron pens and crayola colored pencils, but my favorites are the pilot frixion pens. I have never ever had bleeding with them, and... they are erasable (but when you write with them, not forever!). They also make erasable highlighters in several colors. Not a fan of ink joys as I have had skipping and blobbing (it must be a word because it popped up on my “smart” phone 😁!!! Thank you for your message and tips.
I still don't get it though, for example, once you've added meaning to each color then what? Just start highlighting? Or do you also take notes elsewhere? And if so, how do you take notes? Do you ask yourself questions of what you've read? What questions do you ask?
Just found TomBow no bleed, dual point, 6 colour markers. They do not need thru bible pages, even on my thinnest page bible! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
Papermate Flair pens!! I moved to marking with these in lieu of highlighters. There are like a million colors and they don’t ghost or bleed nearly as bad other pens I’ve used.
I’m using highlighters (zebra) & pigmy micron pens & I’m interested in a nice journaling bible, but want to “lock down” a good system first. I’m thinking I will buy an inexpensive Bible first like you mentioned. Thx!! 😁
Why not do it on note cards. Then put it the box for more cards and it will be color coordinated. That way it will easier. Also make a cheat sheet. Put the colors on it and write what each color means. That will make it great. I am going to try this
Great and informative video. I myself like to study themes in the Bible rather than take a verse by verse approach. Your color coding would work great with that system, and actually when I was studying this morning I was thinking, since I am studying prophecy, I should highlight all the scripture I was reading in purple so I could easily reference it later. Thanks for giving me the down low on an even better way to color code. Thanks bunches!
I have a world bible school study edition New King James version journaling bible and 2 King James version bibles and a Spanish bible as well can I write in them with a pompom pen or with a phone pen.
So is it fair to say this is a completely different ‘note taking system’ compared with your other video where you read the scripture, underline or square off text highlighting it, draw arrow to margin in the same color, and put your notes there? Have you thought about merging these two systems of sort? So, you simply use the color in your chart I guess. Only thing is, if your in Galatians , let’s say, and it’s all law and you’re using red for law, then it’ll be difficult for all your boxes of red with red arrows to your margin of notes wrapped in red 😳😂 Any of this making sense? Now that I’ve got my hardback Cambridge wide margin, I’m gonna test a bunch of ideas. One of them using underlining in one color with a different boxed in color. I don’t know...we’ll see...I’m feeling a bit 🤯🤪 Thanks again for another great video 👍
Adam Vine oh, no this is the same thing. This is just more of the “key” to all those markings. You’re right tho... when it comes to a page with a lot of the same theme, the one color can run together... so I try different things under the color, maybe using straight/dashed/dotted black lines under the color. BUT ALSO, as a rule, I don’t color code everything, only my notes. So yeah... Galatians 3 would be all red, but I’m only marking the specific text that’s standing out for the note.... so that cuts down A LOT of the markings. I want to see some pics of how you do it when you get started!!
Rebecca Juntunen yeah, after this I got some of the gel pens that have the yellow... but the bleed was pretty rough. I think I’ve figured out my go to system, but I’m going to post a video about that sometime soon.
lol ur funny. I have to try something like that. but I don't like my bibles being a mess. the colors make things seem easier tho if I were. to read it again.
I use Crayola colored pencils to highlight scripture but to write in the margins I use the same corresponding color Inkjoy pen. No smears and no bleed through. BTW I use brown for anything related to satan, evil or sin . Thanks for sharing.
I've been looking into marking up my Bible but never knew..... what to mark up. Seeing this.... I'm left wondering.... why? If this is what people are highlighting and marking in their Bible..... they make topical guides/ references or "Bible guides" that.... pretty much do all this for you. No? I think I might just leave my Bible graffiti free and just stick with my notebook..... where if something catches my eye or I want to dig deeper I just write down verse(s) and literally spell out what I want to look into regarding that verse(s). I mean.... even a Google search for.... say "Bible verses regarding God's grace" will spit out a ton of verses for you.
I already have a system; Why did I watch this? 😂 I keep my colours simple. No darks and lights. Just blue, green, pink etc. That way if something happens to my blue, I can grab any other blue pen and continue on. Blue = promises and blessings, whatever shade of blue it is. Of course, that narrows down the number of categories you can have, but that isn't a bad thing. I bought myself some bible highlighters and they were awful. I replaced them with Crayola Twistable pencils ( the pencils, not the crayons) and they work much better.
It's addicting! heleninspace Hi! Can you explain what you mean by “theming the word”?
Sure, I'd be happy to. The colors having thematic meanings. For myself, I use:
*Yellow = Special Things (favorite verses that make me go WOW).
*Blue = God the Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit
*Red = Warnings, and Judgment
*Purple = Grace, Mercy, Peace, etc
*Pink = Love
*Green = Christian Living (reminds me of grass and the home)
*Brown = Sin, Rebellion
*Black and Grey = Historical Data and Info.
Your categories make sense. I might use this key. Do you have an Instagram picture of your Bible? I’d love to see it!
@@birdinmypalm I like your system. I think it is application focused, helps me apply the Word, rather than mark specific words.
heleninspace just FYI. I’m sorry but I had to screenshot your comment. I feel that is PERFECT for me to start out as a beginner.
I've been using this system for at least the last 30 yrs. And - I always use yellow for "anything I like that doesn't fit in a category". Keep up the good work and it's nice to know there are fellow bible nerds out there :)
I’m glad it’s time tested!!!
I’m so happy the Lord guided me to your channel.
I want to study but I don't know how. God blessed me with super natural gift being creative; so I'm open to new ideas.
Teresa Try bible art journaling.... you can find others who do the same on UA-cam, IG, Pinterest, and Facebook
Teresa Sanchez, just give it a try. With your creativeness, you can come back and teach me some things! Always willing to learn something creative and fresh!
Brown = poop = satan. The great poopy lying deceiver. There you go!
Haha amen
my bible is brown though
I love your channel. Your videos are informative and fun! I am renewing myself to Christ after 32 years and I feel this need for learning MORE. I can’t wait to watch more videos
I like to use the bible gel highlighters, and the crayola twistable pencils. They show up really good, and don't bleed through the pages.
I hear good things about those crayolas.
Thank you so much for creating videos!! I’ve taken your suggestions, and created my marking system. It has made a world of difference in my studying the Bible! Through God’s grace and your helpful suggestions , I’m learning so much more when I read my a Bible! Thank you and God bless you!!
I just said to Ashleigh last night, “Developing and locking down my note taking system has probably been one of the biggest blessings of 2018!”
I can laugh and learn with this channel :)
Awesome!!!
So true.
God bless Jason Mayfield
I’m so happy I came across your Chanel! Like other comments mention you can laugh and learn. Really am enjoying this!
I'm using a fairly simple system:

I love online bibles... but I do like having on in hand. :-)
How have i never seen this before!?

My sentiments exactly!!!!
I like this,your personality really shines...I subscribed
It's fun to watch you. You always post good content
ana thanks!!! I appreciate the encouragement!
As a new subscriber, I approve this video! This color system is great! Thanks for sharing.👍
....And it is back-to-school time here, so pens and pencils are on sale, yay!
Great video, I enjoy the Tul Pens from Office Depot, Zebra Mildliners (highlighters) and of course the Inkjoys. Great content! God bless you.
Lol I just use a blue ball point pen.. but I love making notes in my Bible so I am gonna start using some sticky notes as well to jot down certain questions and thoughts..

Very proud you speaking
I'm new to your channel and love it. I use Frixon pens because I need to be able to erase. I get no bleed-through. I use Accu-Gel highlighters. My color system is purple for God, yellow for favorite scriptures, pink for a command, green for promises, blue for warnings, and orange for randomness.
i use red for Blood/ cross of Jesus, brown for history/historical background, yellow light; navy blue for references on sea and navigation; purple for power and authority of the believer; green for Sin orange for personal application; and I use symbols for covenant, dove for Holy Spirit; crown for Kingdom;
I subscribed! I needed this practical advice. God Bless!
I've seen people coding with icons. Looks amazing after some time.
Bible Teacher Kay Arthur has a whole system of using icons. Look her up.
I still don't get it though, for example, once you've added meaning to each color then what? Just start highlighting? Or do you also take notes elsewhere? And if so, how do you take notes? Do you ask yourself questions of what you've read? What questions do you ask?
Orange HOLY Spirit, purple identity in Christ, green Praise, pink God, Blue prayer, yellow Gods promises etc
I’m so glad I came across this; I learned and laughed at the same time📝. And I love you mentioned Dave Ramsey 👍🏼😅
I love it!!! thanks even for the humor
Thank you for sharing!
I recommend Sharpie highlighters Smear Guard* and Uni-Ball Signo #207 multicolored pens. Can buy at Office Depot.
I use your Bible marking system from another video. My favorite pens are pilot G-2. Lots of Colors no smudging and last a long time.
Thank you for Sharing, I found it Interesting, & enjoyable
You are so funny and it seems like you have such a cool personality 😄😊 thanks for the video
Thanks! I needed that encouragement!
I’m using highlighters (zebra) & pigmy micron pens & I’m interested in a nice journaling bible, but want to “lock down” a good system first. I’m thinking I will buy an inexpensive Bible first like you mentioned. Thx!! 😁
Dude, you funny, but soo helpful, thank you :)
Is it okay to write the verse and my thoughts in color codes in a notebook and keep my Bible clean?
It's okay to do whatever you want. lol
Grace For Life TV okay, some people say that it’s not okay because you don’t see those old notes and thoughts.
People love to dogmatically boss others around... but it's for freedom Christ has set you free! You mark it up the way that works best for you!
Why not do it on note cards. Then put it the box for more cards and it will be color coordinated. That way it will easier. Also make a cheat sheet. Put the colors on it and write what each color means. That will make it great. I am going to try this
Great video! You’re so funny. God bless you and yours.
I am going to try that!
I use Crayola twistables large range of color choices no bleeding thru'
Hi. thanks for sharing this.. God bless
Love his videos ❤️🙏🏻
I have a world bible school study edition New King James version journaling bible and 2 King James version bibles and a Spanish bible as well can I write in them with a pompom pen or with a phone pen.
I love your video .... god bless you
Thanks Justine!
It works shirt
Nice!!
I have highlighters but I definitely need markers that don't go through to the next page... 😐
I have used the dry highlighters since seminary but there are only four colors so it is limited
Is there a way to see/get a copy of the Bible plan or tracker that you use?
I love this! Thank you. I’m a newbie hehe.
Hey Dani! Check out tearupyourBible.com
Awesome thanks for sharing
Give the Crayola Twistable Color Pencils a try ;-)
Dede Willingham love that idea!!!
I've been considering colored mechanical pencils
Grace For Life TV Happy to share!
The new ink joys have yellow and brown. They bleed through a bit.
Rebecca Juntunen yeah, after this I got some of the gel pens that have the yellow... but the bleed was pretty rough.
I think I’ve figured out my go to system, but I’m going to post a video about that sometime soon.
Sad but true I pray not read. I pray for motivation, understanding n plz show me how to study.
Micro markers. Even the thinnest Sharpie is too thick and too likely to bleed through.
'MERICA !
Blabbermouth! When you get to the marking please?
Rude.
THIS is Australia! 🤣🤣
'straya maaate!
lol ur funny. I have to try something like that. but I don't like my bibles being a mess. the colors make things seem easier tho if I were. to read it again.
This approach to creating a system has been super helpful for me. I hope it helps you too! :-)
Ink joy is a no go a year later you will regret it .
I came for a set system.
When studying the Bible...There will NEVER be enough coloured pen
Holy Moses. This just popped up on my feed and I’m like “who is the babyfaced guy that hijacked Jason’s channel?”
What kind of case was that?

This is America 😂👊🧡
haha you crack me up
I use Crayola colored pencils to highlight scripture but to write in the margins I use the same corresponding color Inkjoy pen. No smears and no bleed through.
BTW I use brown for anything related to satan, evil or sin . Thanks for sharing.
Brown for Satan cause he is a piece of 💩 poo lol.
Do whatever you want. 😂
Your so funny 😂
Brown is disciple or follow or follower because dirt roads are brown and John the baptist wore camel hair, there, that was my logic, ha
I already have a system; Why did I watch this? 😂
I keep my colours simple.
