      These poor foot controllers have been ignored most of the time but they were made very well. Can be cleaned up and adjusted to almost new condition and it's very rewarding to hear that motor have to agree

    Super helpful, I just started to try using my 99k, got it at an estate sale, and there is no slow stitching xD it goes from 0 to full power with no in-between. I might take a peek inside with proper safety gear of course as I can see the papery insulator.

      That zero to sixty is a good sign it needs an overhaul. There may be some controversy as to whether that pad is really asbestos but my feeling is better safe than sorry so I treat it like it is. If you find other little problems with you new beauty I have 18 more videos for model 99K; ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIIUgkEujqHc9iNWN9NPW2Z.html

      @@andytubesewing1953 yes Andy tube I got a a 338 in at a thrift shop awhile ago, then a client paid my long arm service ( a Gamill) with a “ Touch n sew “ with new gears but still needed some restoration, which lead me to you. …Consequently hearing you talk about the 301 triggered to relapse on a shopaholic , retail therapy! And purchase 4 machines , plus one send by mistake and the seller told me to just keep it because it was heavy 237 fashion mate…. All within a few weeks 😅…. Yes I know , I got a bit of a problem. But I learn so much and is basically harmless. The ones a purchase were 301 coco, a 404, a rocketeer 503A 🤩, and the 329 K. I find that working on the machines is very relaxing and rewarding for me.

    I wonder if a paper hole punch will work on that, works good with gasket material but that might be a bit thick for it.

      Welcome, Mark. I did try a paper hole punch afterward and it just could not get thru the dense material. I was just using a single punch hand-held model so maybe a more professional model would work.

    Great video. My 99 is from 1955 and it has the button foot controller. I wonder if the metal one you have is one of Singer’s “better ideas” or so they thought, LOL. I don’t sew barefoot and after you mentioning the foot controllers get warm/hot I decided to be more aware of that in the future as I usually leave my machines plugged in until I’m done sewing for the time. Take care Andy.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 років тому

      I wonder too! I have seen button controllers on other models older than 1955. I know Singer made a cabinet (No. 49) that the 99K could be mounted in as well as Combination Table 301. I don't know if they used a button controller with a knee lever. So much information has been lost over the years. Singer has always recommended unplugging the machine when not in use. Some people leave the light turned on all the time as a reminder it is plugged in. Does your 1955 model have this style of bobbin winder or the style with gears? Just curious. Thanks for watching, Rita. Take Care.

    • @RitaM92392
      @RitaM92392 6 років тому

      Yes it is the same bobbin winder. One thing to mention, mine is not a “K”, but a “-“, so 99- must be a reject of a 99K. LOL. If so they made 25,000 rejects. Maybe you know why the minus after the number 99?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 років тому

      Sorry, I read once about the dash but can't remember the story. Maybe that some were made in Canada where they later made the 185J, VS. Kelbowie, Scotland and thus the "K", but don't quote me on that. It is not a reject though. possumjimandelizabeth.com/xhtml/collect_sewing_singr99.html

      Great detective work, Rita! Makes sense too since the K stands for Kilbowie, Scotland. This reminds me of the 401A, 403A and 404. The 404 was made in Elizabeth, so no "A" added on the end. The 401A & 403A were made in Anderson, S. Carolina, USA. Thanks for tracking down the mysterious 99- vs 99K.

    My1951 controller had only one slightly out-of-round carbon, and thanks to your video, it's all clean and shiny again.
    The rubber feet on my 99's controller were really hard and they nearly dissolved in the alcohol. Do you know of a place to get replacements?

    • @andytubesewing1953

      I don't know of anyone selling that type of foot. Local hardware stores sell many types of bumper feet and maybe you could use a different type. I have even seen stick-on feet and bumpers to cushion and prevent sliding. www.amazon.com/Adhesive-Electronics-Speakers-Computers-Keyboard/dp/B085DMB1XV/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=Rubber+feet+self-adhesive&qid=1630182319&sr=8-8

    Interesting these minis graphite charcoal disks. I did not know that cleaning it up would improve the electrical contact. This type of Simanco pedal is no longer manufactured. Today the pedals are electronic for sewing machine Singer and Janome. Our home sewing machines are Singer 15c and 974 and two Vigorelli's, an Aerodynamics for straight stitching and another Vigorelli ZZ / A Robot.

    Firstly, thanks for making this video. I'd have no idea how to restore my controller otherwise.
    I've gone and stripped one of the screws holding the cords on (the ones you remove at about 14:45 in the video). I don't have a parts list, though. Do you know what the replacement part is?

    Do you have a video on replacing a dedicated knee pedal mechanism on a 1923 99k? I bought one and the mechanism inside is some kind of ceramic and pretty much totally disintegrated. The actual knee bar is missing. I'm not sure if I should just buy a new motor and foot pedal or try to find a different solution to restore it. I would appreciate your input.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  3 роки тому +1

      I sure don't. This 99K was the only one I've ever worked on. Most knee pedals I've seen from pre-WWII have the ceramic housing in a bracket with a lever/plunger mechanism. Post-WWII era Singer put the ceramic carbon disc holder (later plastic) inside a Bakelite or plastic housing, as you see in a button style or clamshell style foot pedal. A bracket on the cabinet was made to hold the foot pedal and the fold down knee lever had an arm that pushed on the button or clamshell cover. The internal parts did not change much. I once bought the metal bracket/knee lever parts along with a button style pedal and mounted them in an old treadle cabinet that a fellow had installed a modern 500A into but he wanted a knee lever to operate it. I bought all the parts from eBay and thriftyfarmgirl.com/

      @@sherriharris6142 Right, I get it. What I was trying to explain that that controller style you have was later used inside the housings for foot pedals. It's the same. Some people replace what you have with a foot pedal and a smaller metal bracket/knee lever taken from a more modern cabinet, like from the 1950s/1960s. Sometimes the wires from your style controller went to the motor and sometimes to the 3 pin terminal. Motors can be rewired to the terminal to be controlled by a plug with the line cord (power) and the foot pedal. You may want to remove what you have and buy a new motor with foot controller already assembled but may need to rewire the terminal. There are many variations. I don't have videos for the internal controllers in the cabinets. Yours is likely a cabinet from an earlier model, like a 66 or even 15 that the owner reused for a new 99K. I do have a manual for model 15 that has info about the internal controller and wires. If you want a free copy email to andymanuals53@gmail.com and be sure to ask specifically for the Adjusters Manual for Model 15-91 as we gen many emails per day. Good Luck.

    I guess this means the foot controller for my 185K has asbestos in it?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 років тому

      I'm guessing it does, but only a guess. The Model 185 replaced model 99 so it is a few years newer. Maybe Singer quit the asbestos by then? None of the button type foot controller made out of bakelite had an asbestos pad, only a couple of small washers. Honestly, you would have to open it and check or ask on the vintage forums. I have a 26-page parts list for my 99K and it shows PART NO. 196849 - Controller Insulation. I only have a 4-page parts list for the 185 model and it does not include any controller parts. Thanks for watching Andy Tube Imogene. Stop by any time.
