"Orion" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica from their third studio album, Master of Puppets, released on March 3, 1986, by Elektra Records. "Orion" was written primarily by bassist Cliff Burton. The song was named after the constellation of the same name, Orion, due to its "spacey sounding" bridge.
On September 27, 1986, while touring in 1986 to support Master of Puppets, the band's tour bus crashed, killing Burton. "Orion" was played over speakers during his funeral. After his death, Metallica frontman James Hetfield had the notes from the bridge of the song tattooed on his left arm.
"Orion" is a multipart instrumental highlighting Burton's bass playing. A majority of the song was written by Burton, including the guitar solos. Burton arranged each part of the middle section, which features a moody bass line and multipart guitar harmonies. "Orion" contains two solos from Burton, one from Hetfield, and three from the group's lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett. Burton had originally intended to play all the solos on bass, but reluctantly gave up some to the band's two guitarists.
While demoing songs for Master of Puppets, "Orion" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" had been one song, titled "Only Thing"; between the demo sessions and the album recording sessions, the two songs were split apart.
Master of Puppets is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on March 3, 1986, by Elektra Records. Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark at Sweet Silence Studios with producer Flemming Rasmussen, it was the band's last album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a bus accident in Sweden during the album's promotional tour.
The album's artwork, designed by Metallica and Peter Mensch and painted by Don Brautigam, depicts a cemetery field of white crosses tethered to strings, manipulated by a pair of hands in a clouded, blood-red sky, with a fiery orange glow on the horizon. Instead of releasing a single or video in advance of the album's release, Metallica embarked on a five-month American tour in support of Ozzy Osbourne. The European leg was canceled after Burton's death in September 1986, and the band returned home to audition a new bassist.
Master of Puppets peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised its music and political lyrics. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential metal albums of all time, and is credited with consolidating the American thrash metal scene. In 2015, Master of Puppets became the first metal recording to be selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Not instrumentals, but one's I think would reeeeeealy interest you. The lyrics are deep, kinda bluesy metallica, but still so intense. Beautiful songs. "Bleeding Me", "The Outlaw Torn" and "Fixxxer"

If you liked this song definetely check out "Call of Ktulu" by them. Its the instrumental piece on the previous album "Ride the Lightning". Its definetely a bit more heavy, but still beautiful

I’m excited for this reaction. When studies show that metal most closely aligns to classical in terms of composition, I always think of Orion
Cliff Burton was a classically trained piano player.
Other members of the band are on record saying that they were looking up to him when they needed to compose various parts of songs and put them together.

The Call of Ctulu intro is the definition of classical in Metal
Master of Puppets has that part when he gets high and then comes back to reality illustrated by instruments. That's very classical music to me. Also Fade to Black at the end when he's dying one tune is him traveling away to the other side and another his instincts fighting against it. That's genius and something I've only heard in classical music before, dual themes at the same time, like a boy walking happily through the forest while a wolf is sneaking up on him.

They have been playing it a lot more on recent tours. That is likely Rob’s influence and I’m glad they are. They played it at MetLife as well

Once I saw a youtube comment about this song. It went something like this: Orion is the ultimate metal jam, and we mortals are only able to hear 8 minutes of it.
Well if we talk about emotional songs, "To Live is to die" should be next.
Ok I don't know why almost no one in the comments is mentioning this, but the solos at 3:56 and 10:39 are both done entirely on bass. Cliff was known for playing lead parts that you'd usually expect to be done on guitar, on the bass. Another good examples of this (a song you should definitely also check out) is For Whom The Bell Tolls. The lead part in the intro in that song is also done by Cliff on bass.

There’s just something magical about this piece. The way the guitars and bass dance and weave around each other is so sonically captivating. This is the kind of song you feel when you listen to it, it transport the mind somewhere else. It’s so tragic what happened to Cliff. Who knows what else he could have gone on to create had he lived.
as you are getting deeper into metal music there are some bands and songs I'd like to recommend
black sabbath - often considered to be first heavy metal band, I know you listened to heaven and hell but I'd be interested in your opinion on some of their music before dio replaced ozzy, I think 'war pigs' is great song to start with
megadeath, slayer, anthrax - together with metallica known as big 4 of thrash metal. they shaped thrash metal scene and influenced many bands to come, songs I'd recommend:
megadeath - either 'tornado of souls' or 'holy wars the punishment due'
slayer - 'crypts of eternity'
anthrax - 'the enemy'
judas priest - this band had huge influence on nwobhm scene, great nowbhm bands like iron maiden or saxon were strongly shaped by priest's sound. they themselves are not always considered to be part of nwobhm as many classify them as proto-nwobhm, pre-nwobhm etc. song I'd advise to start with is 'victim of changes'
Good recommendations band-wise. Although I am not a big fan of Anthrax but okay.
Black Sabbath with "War Pigs" - absolutely. Would love an analysis of live in Paris 1970 but this channel doesn't do live before studio.
Megadeth (you've spelled it wrong btw =) "Tornado of Souls" and "Holy Wars..." yeah great songs. I have already recommended "In My Darkest Hour" written on Cliff Burton's death if I recall correctly.
With Slayer I would probably go for either "Seasons in the Abyss" or "Dead Skin Mask".
Judas Priest with "Victim of Changes" is a good one. Again would love an analysis of live at US festival 1983 - this is a one epic live. But yet again, a recommendation not for this channel.
This song needs a one time category of base play. It's is absolutely a 10. Incredible.
I find there is a timelessness to instrumental tracks, so glad the album included some! Another must listen metal track is Joe Satriani’s Crushing Day from Surfing with the Alien! I am pretty sure Satriani was Kirk Hammett’s guitar teacher (I) Crushing Day is one of my top workout tunes!
Satch did indeed teach Kirk, along with many other guitarists in the San Francisco Bay Area.

They've been my favorite since I was a kid. In my early twenties I listened to the first four albums while reading Salvatore's Drizzt series. Now, everytime I hear one of these songs it takes me to scenes from the book and the book likewise takes me to parts of certain songs. Forever married to each other in my mind.
Got to react to Disposable Heroes off this album and To live is to die off and Justice for all. Great songs!!

"Orion" is a piece that plays into infinity, and the "fade in" and "fade out" sections just remind us that we mere mortals were lucky enough to hear about 8:00 minutes of it.

Megadeth doesn't have too much pretty in it - it's tough to pick a track that won't get picked apart by a breakdown. Post the 1990 Rust In Peace album one of my favorite tracks is "Sleepwalker" For a thrash song I think this one is composed pretty well.

Buckethead is a must. Soothsayer is probably the best introduction song to Buckethead. I recommend the studio version before the live performance. I mean the live performance will blow your mind watching him play, theres just a lot of improv. He technically never performs the same song twice.

Loving these reviews! Consider reviewing Exist by Avenged Sevenfold. It's a long one at over 15 minutes and it doesn't make as good of an introduction to the band as something like "Bat Country" would, but it's a really interesting song and one of my favorites.

Orion it's absolutely a masterpiece of a song. Brilliant in many ways! RIP Cliff Burton, he will always be missed!
But it's time to get really into some prog metal! Dream Theater (again ofc!) or Haken for example.
Dream Theater: A Change Of Seasons (23 minutes suite, but it's absolutely fantastic), Metropolis PT1 (from I&W), Octavarium (neck and neck with A Change of Seasons imho), The Count Of Tuscany, Breaking All Illusions.
Haken: Cockroach King, 1985, Crystallized (another beautiful suite).
But, with DT and Haken is sooooo difficult to pick a song, they're both amazing!

Too bad you didn't hear this back when it was originally released. In early 1988, I heard this entire album in one sitting, which was the first time I had ever heard anything by Metallica. It's impressive now, but was so different than anything I had ever heard until then. Call of Ktulu from the Ride the Lightning album is of the same caliber.

i think you also should always take into account the time period a piece of music came out. and try to reference if the piece has come from another source or has been done in that way before....or if in fact... the band simply was the first to accomplish the music being presented. a difficult task to do as you are unfamiliar with the "EVOLUTION" of metal music. so determining who did what first will always be a challenge for you. suffice it to say metallica presented many.. many...many firsts. but in your analysis(final part), you try to take these things into account without really having the background or the understanding of the "evolution" of the genre. so it becomes kind of unfair to assign a grade to THAT particular aspect without that knowledge. it's not a fault on your part... you simply don't have the fortune of being alive at that time to really be able to make that particular assessment. so your 8.5 may have really been a 10 if you knew just how groundbreaking this arrangement really was at the time in 1986. but not knowing the EVOLUTION certainly puts you at a great disadvantage in this respect.

i think you are one of my favorites musice reaction channels.. but talking about this track like simple composition in some points.. i think you are wrong. the troulist main instrument on the track is the bass. In first listen u cant get the bass work. The details.. anyway i hope enjoied listening.

I'm afraid I'm not getting the superlatives for Orion when I think of other instrumentals (or extended sections) from the likes of Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Rainbow, or even The Doors or Smashing Pumpkins. The song is lovely but I'm not going out of my way to hear it.

I appreciate your breakdowns, but it does kinda suck when the originality rating is lower than it should be because precedence is overlooked. Odds are if a song doesn't seem all that unique it's because it became so influential, other artists emulated it to some extent. Like, I remember a lot of the old Looney Toons cartoons and the Beatles' movie "A Hard Days Night" were rife with Marx Brothers type humor. I watched "Duck Soup" decades later and found it stale. Really unfair cos the Marx Brothers were the originals.
CLIFF TAGHT THEM SOMUCH
Metallica was influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd. If you take a listen to the song Freebird particularly, it has a similar feel in that it has fast parts and slow melodic parts, a crazy breakdown at the end with an increasing tempo. Metallica paid them to do a private live performance for them. I saw it on UA-cam some years ago. As I say this, I am not saying Orion is a rip off of Freebird by any stretch of the imagination, but if you compare the two songs, I think you can take away something useful from what I am saying and see elements in the comparison. Skynyrd had an almost hypnotic way they used the vocal melody and lead melody in the song, Orion also has some rather hypnotic melodic parts. To say they are borderline psychedelic isn't farfetched. Where Skynyrd were more blues and southern rock influenced, Metallica were more classical, punk and British metal, thrash metal.
Check out Damage Inc. and Sanitarium from the same album. The title track also everyone tends to rave about, which has an amazing interlude.
Please take a break from metallica. Some metal recommendations:

Your dont know about that composition. Naturally, always something finding ourselves. That about struggle, ethernal searching yourselves, impossible destination of full harmony, humans illusions about happiness... Where were i may roam... Orion is fiction

Great video. I'm not th biggest fan of the song admittedly, but your breakdown of it was on point.
I mention that it isnt my favorite because I have to admit I'm a snob and havr been spoiled instrumentally by Dream Theater. Their instrumentals would blow your nips off. Any DT would be great to see though, regardless.
Gonna go out on a limb and put "Illumination Theory" out there as the DT recommendation.
