"One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the third and final single from the band's fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). Metallica performed "One" for the 31st Annual Grammy Awards show broadcast from Los Angeles in 1989. The next year, the song won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, the first ever to win in that category.
"One" was written in November 1987 by Metallica's principal composers James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. The song was released in 1989 as the third and final single of the album.
...And Justice for All is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on September 7, 1988, by Elektra Records. It was the first Metallica album to feature bassist Jason Newsted, following the death of their previous bassist Cliff Burton in 1986.
The album title is derived from the last four words of the American Pledge of Allegiance. Three of its songs were released as singles: "Harvester of Sorrow", "Eye of the Beholder", and "One"; the title track, "...And Justice for All", was released as a promotional single.
...And Justice for All was acclaimed by music critics for its depth and complexity, although its dry mix and nearly inaudible bass guitar was criticized. It was included in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll of the year's best albums, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989, controversially losing out to Jethro Tull in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental category. The single "One" backed the band's debut music video, and earned Metallica their first Grammy Award in 1990 (and the first ever in the Best Metal Performance category).

I've been into metal for over 25 years and it was always my favorite genre. Classic metal, thrash, death metal, black metal, power metal, I love all sub genres, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy beautiful music or other genres. I love rock, country, blues and classical as well. Boston, ZZ Top, ACDC, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe bonamassa, Rush, are some of my favorite rock and blues artists. Even some modern rock like Shinedown and Massive Wagons I like a lot. I grew up listening to and love country. Hank Sr, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Billy Joe Shaver...even Brad Paisley and Johnny Hiland with their badass chickin' pickin'. Always loved classical, too. Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I'm just a music lover in general, but metal is what really touches my soul and gets me motivated.

In 1988, when this album dropped, James Hetfield was only 25 years old meaning he wrote it at like 23 or 24. That is simply amazing because how many 23-25 year Olds today could write not just the music to this, but the lyrics as well?

Beautiful is a very common term my guy. It’s music like you said . Just as much as anything is . The “ normal music listener “ probably thinks of metal as something you can’t be calling beautiful , but when you listen and don’t go by the judgment you know it’s beautiful just like any other genre

To get more context on the song, I would recommend watching the official music video which includes clips of a movie infused into the song to add context on the songs origins. The movie being used is called Johnny got his gun. It is honestly really sad to see the official video only because of how well it is put together, it creates a truly moving narrative.
You don't have to do a video on it, but you should watch it if you get a chance.

My all-time favorite album when I was a teen. But "To live is to die" is my top one. Best album I've ever listened to.
Yeah, and justice for all is probably the best overall album, certainly from metallica, and possibly in all rock/metal music. My favorite metallica songs are harvester of sorrow and the thing that should not be.

Yes he has such a neat format for his videos. Good music and audio balance, great way of articulating himself, open minded, actually looks at the lyrics and looks up the song beforehand so he’s not clueless of what’s happening the entire time he’s listening, pauses accordingly to express himself without destroying the flow of the song, and I can keep going. He’s found a great way of doing this and I hope more and more people find his channel.

The formula for UA-cam is rather simple, the more subs and likes a video has the more it will be bumped to the top of the results for what’s in the search bar. Also make sure to label your videos accordingly. Used key words such as band name, song title, reaction and review/analysis and encourage people to like and subscribe to help boost the channel on the platform.

I promise I wont suggest on every video but... you gotta check out "Metropolis Part 1" by Dream Theater. Album version is perfect.
And despite you saying you wanna do the album version, if you do Nightwish, I absolutely cannot stress enough that you have to do their 2013 Waken performance of "Ghost Love Score" because of their new vocalist and the energy and perfection live. *and not to break the 4th wall, but get thousands of new eyes on your channel from that song alone*

Yes!!! Most reactors don't notice that the drums in the latter half of the song are mimicking guns. So crazy how quickly you picked that up! Also I have to say, for your next Metallica song, you could easily pick any song out of the first 4 albums that you haven't heard before, but I'd recommend Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death, Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened, Battery, or Damage Inc. The Unforgiven trilogy is also a great set of songs

the solo for "The Unforgiven" from The Black Album is also one of Kirks best 🤘🏻 metal music is very beautiful and akin to classical, lots of hardcore metal musicians listen to and have been heavily influenced by classical along w/blues as well

There is also a minor to major key change from the chorus into that beautiful section u liked and also when changing into the heavy part towards the end there is a also a minor to major harmony that kicks in right before it goes heavy as hell and as a composer myself i find that very soothing to my ear. It also reflects the differnt moods generated within the composition to express a since of hope or in this case absence from the condition of existance in hopes of an secape into the anger and hopelessness of not having a choice. Great reaction and annilisation!!
As a treat to you and your brother, I'm going to recommend a song so compositionally complex that it's included in the Sydney Conservatorium for Music's Composition Course. The song is And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, by Ne Obliviscaris. A progressive metal band out of Australia, they are a six piece band with a harsh vocalist, clean vocalist who also plays violin, a biological mutant hybrid of a machine gun and a metronome, and insanely talented guitarists and bassist. I highly recommend watching the Live in Colorado 2016 video because watching them play something so complex live is breathtaking, but I do understand you like to approach from the studio recording. That being said, I still think the Live in Colorado 2016 video is a better showcase of just how truly incredible this band is. Cheers

watch the music video whether as a reaction or by yourself....its superb...and absolutely a punch to the gut.....also apparently the double bass drums in the climax represent the dots and dashes of Morse Code the subject of the song used by moving his head to ask his caretakers to kill him.
A deep cut you could look at is The Outlaw Torn, its a different style from what you've heard from Metallica before and has great lyricism and vocals

1:38 Technically correct, although that award came on the heels of the utter debacle in 1989 which saw Jethro Tull beat out Metallica (among others) for "Best hard rock/metal performance". After being mocked by pretty much everybody in the music industry, The Recording Academy split it off into its own "metal" category for 1990 (and then gave the first _three_ of those awards to Metallica, up through 1992).
Reactions should always be studio versions. Always.
99% of the time yes but Jelly Roll is one Black sheep of an artist that might break that stigma for you, go have a look at "Only & Love the Heartless", "Glitter" or" Smoking Section" from the live studio filmed version he did for his fans during the covid lockdown.
Maybe just maybe an exception can start a list to change your mind.

Metallica wise: Unforgiven (could do the trilogy) will impress you.
Other metal to dip your toes into. Try Testament, especially The Ballad (from the album Practice what you Preach) and The Ritual and/or Return to Serenity (from the album The Ritual).
And also…Machine Head. Start off with Sail in to the Black (album: Bloodstone & Diamonds) then go epic with Clenching the fists of dissent (album: The Blackening, you should listen to all of this masterpiece 😂)

Great reaction! Also to note, many hardcore or original Metalica fans considered Metalica "selling out" with this song. And the bass is barely present in the mix. Lars and James especially were having a difficult time accepting Jason and his contribution to the group.
Yeah check out the video from Alex here on UA-cam with One if Jason did the mix and you can hear the bass as it should have originally been mixed. I recommend checking it out in your spare time. Jason didn’t deserve the flack the boys gave him. He was a talented guy.
Well put! A lot of comments fail to recognize that these guys were in their mid twenties and really had no idea how to go forward without their buddy, Cliff. Their immaturity and the massive challenge of moving on without Cliff is obviously why they mistreated Jason and fortunately for Jason, he gets it.
People starting labeling them as sellouts with the Ride the Lightning album because the first track opened with an acoustic guitar and because of having a ballad, FADE TO BLACK not only be on there but also because it started acustically. And of course, now Fade has become one of their most, if NOT most, popular and most well loved somg!
People were saying they sold out before this. Fade to Black is when people first started complaining. The only thing Metallica sells out are arenas and stadiums.

I can't agree enthusiastically enough. "Masterpiece" is an overused word, but in this case it is the only word that fits.
Some people find it surprising that study's have shown the music genre that most metalheads like the most other than metal is classical music.

The cincher for me as to how great of a masterpiece this song is, came when I heard classical guitarists play it and you realize how gorgeous it is. Check out Mike Dawes playing it. He actually plays both the music and the vocal melody and it's breathtaking.
A Metallica deep cut: Low Man’s Lyric. It’s not a metal song by any stretch of the imagination, but an amazing folk song.

James is the greatest rhythm guitar player ever Jason great on the bass Lars perfect on drums. Yes they were young and still pissed at losing cliff. When you do get to the live versions you have to see Seattle 1989
I was in my 40's the first time I saw them live, which happened to be at an outdoor arena inside the walls of an old European fort. They played with studio-quality sound and precision all night. Go see them live if you get a chance.

I leaned towards what I eventually came to understand as 'metal'. I like loads of other music which brings me to the following, metal is most closely related to classical music with subtle hints of blues and rock?
Love your channel! However I believe you’re missing a vital point when “grading” composition. The CORE of heavy metal music are the basic power cords you deduct points for lack of intricate composition. I recommend maybe taking this into consideration when grading composition. Keep up the good work!
The thing about metal is that those who perform in the genre aren't afraid to tackle the hard issues. That's what makes it so powerful for many.

One of my favourite Metallica songs. You should check out “No Leaf Clover” from their live album S&M. It utilizes an orchestra to back them, and it’s incredible. There’s no studio version, it’s an exclusive live track.

I always thought the fast riff was a machine gun riff too but having watched the film "Jhonny got his Gun" which the song is about ad also appears in the video for One. The riff is far more reminiscent and very similar to the Military drums rolling at the start of the film. I can highly reccomend watching the One video

Good job on picking up on the little things, like machine gun fire, and the conveying of emotional value...I am impressed, not many get it.
When I was a kid this was the "heaviest" stuff out there I could get my hands on and brings me back. I still love Metallica (their old stuff) but they were just a stepping stone and my introduction to metal. Fairly tame and mainstream stuff but still good. I am by no means saying I am a better musician than any of them and I certainly have not achieved anything like they have. So I definitely respect it and still jam their riffs from time to time.

Great analysis of an absolute classic. Would totally reconmend another song from this album - Blackened. Fan favorite from Metallica's faster and heavier side. Should be fun for the music theory expert with all the odd time signatures. Also megadeth would be another great band to see, I'd recommend holy wars, hangar 18 and tornado of souls

Honestly I love seeing someone new who isn't biased or someone new to the metal genre because let's face it metal music has gotten a bad rap over the years "it's the Devil's music" "I can't understand them so I don't like them" etc. I would subscribe if you take a journey down the rabbit hole and see that even metal artist's have a soft side like Corey Taylor in snuff or all that remains.
I heard that song the day the album came out in 88. There was nothing else even remotely similar to that at the time. I had started listening to Metallica earlier that same year, but I was still stunned by this when I heard it the first time. After 30-something years, this is still my favorite album from anyone.

Metallica have also written some amazing instrumental pieces. I recommend Call of Ktulu or Orion they are both beautifully composed and some of the best instrumentation the band has to offer

You have to do Paschendale by Iron Maiden. I would say it is a lesser known song but most big fans of the band love it. It’s also probably their best lyrics of any of their songs
Based on your experience, I highly suggest the song "Ki" by The Devin Townsend Project.
I have been an gigging metalhead for about 30 years, but THAT song got my country music loving wife into Devin Townsend - a man who wrote a song that starts with a ballad, into dubstep, death metal, and ends in fairground music (and that's not a joke.)
Ki however is NOTHING like that. My wife described it as an "eargasm".
Their bassist, Cliff Burton, died way too young. He was the one who would take music theory classes and is responsible for the heavy classical influence on this album.
Great review, this is one of my all time favourite songs, the video actually goes with the song perfectly as it was written about that soldier, but Metallica were nominated for the grammy for this song for best rock song and lost to Jethro Tull, so when Metallica released the Black album and were nominated for Enter Sandman, Lars cheekily said lucky Jethro Tull weren't here this year huh 😂😂
Great video, if you want something a little heavier. Check out As the Palaces Burn by Lamb of God. Great southern power metal with bold riffs and drums and good meaning in the lyrics if you like the screaming vocals. I love them myself.
