It's a shame Lars and James don't like bass much. It's always really down in the mix, with the exception being The Black Album. Their other instrumental, "Call of Ktulu" has Cliff doing some wild things on the bass with his wah and effects but a lot of it is drowned out in the final mix.

Geebz, do yourself a favor and look up the isolated bass track for this song. It’s on UA-cam, and it shows the incredible range of sounds and textures Cliff contributed to this song. A lot of the portions I assumed were guitar are actually Cliff’s bass.

@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head Death Magnetic is in a weird place in their discography. After the last few albums had just about demolished their legacy as an epic band, this was the first step on the path to redemption. For all its good songs it still couldnt erase the disgust people had for St. Anger at the time. Even now when I think of that phase of their career i still have trouble separating it from the dogshit they had been putting out for the last 20 years lol

My absolute favourite Metallica song, also a classic in making people go “wait that’s not a guitar?”
The intro is either a bass, or an organ/synth, there’s a lot of debate over that, but it’s apparently Cliff either way
The lead line at 3:20 is Cliff
The clean interlude starting at 8:00 is Cliff
And finally the solo at 13:34 is Cliff, this song combined with Pulling Teeth really makes it clear why he has inspired so many people to get into bass

Even though Orion is a masterpiece and extremely important song to me, my dad and my relatives, you *need* to listen their other fully instrumental piece: Call of Ktulu (Cthulhu is mispronounced intentionally).
Both versions, the original and the S&M version which was performed with SF philharmonica so insanely intense and creates the perfect atmosphere when the inspiration for the track is H.P. Lovecraft's pantheon.
EDIT; At the end of the song you said how the Orion must have been a blast to see live. Well, they played it first time live waaaay way after. Robert Trujillo was the first bassist Metallica gave permission to play it live. Personally I've seen Orion once live and I won't be lying, I cried.

Yeah as pointed out they have an instrumental on the Ride the Lightning, Puppets, and Justice albums. For me Orion is an example of the more grand composition style that was basically the entire Justice album (my favorite incidentally). That whole album is song after song written almost like concertos with movements. And in Orion you get the exposition/statement of the theme, then the slow movement in a triple meter, then recapitulation.

I love your approach to these reaction videos, so many other people pause the track way too often that it becomes jarring, but you let the track sit longer, we can see when you’re digging something, and when you do pause it’s for a longer and more considered commentary

My understanding is the drone at the beginning is a distorted bass guitar.
The guitar melodies are just multi layered during the middle section.

There are parts of this album where James layers the same part 6+ deep. Such a precise player, that it sounds like a harmonizer.

One thing I really appreciate about your channel is actually the volume. So many reaction channels seem to be afraid of being too loud(I mean you can always turn it down but up has a limit). So particularly when playing content or playing a video game the volume is so low I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear the dialog or song, and in the worse cases, their dialog is too loud then. So kinda dumb but I really appreciate your well balanced volume.

Heard an interview with Lars saying how the guys from Rush came to one of their shows around this time and Cliff was such a huge fan he refused to see them before they went on, he was too nervous...and the Metallica guys credit Rush with giving them the confidence to go for these longer more experimental tracks. Awwwwight!

That whole middle section starting with cliffs bass riff is absolutely magical. The bending notes from the guitar solo and subsequent emotional build. Definitely my favorite piece of music from Metallica.

They did 3 others instrumentals : Anesthesia (Pulling teeth), Call of Cthulhu and To Live is to Die.
To Live is to Die is actually a tribute to Cliff, released after his death. The song has a heart-wrenching middle section, very melancholic, that Cliff is said to have written but never recorded (hence the tribute from James, Lars and Kirk). I would strongly recommend you check this one out !

Cliff was amazing just to see how damn skillful he was you must see him play for whom the bell tolls live in the 80s its a joy to watch the true bass player rip like a god he way taken to soon and was way ahead of hes time

I've no doubt you've already been informed that Cliff was a virtuoso and scholar of fine music. About as talented and brilliant a musician as you'd hear of any genre...
I listen to vast array of music from metal to electronic and dub, to straight rock, but Orion is, was, and will always be my favourite tune from any band or artist, ever. The very soundtrack of my life. Just a brilliant piece of music, composed by a brilliant musician.

Yeah dude yeah dude yeah dude yeah dude... been waiting for you to do this one. I named my son after this song... it's a true epic masterpiece.
Cliff had a solo, it's hard for people to pick out but it was coming from his custom Rickenbacker Bass with a hot pot'd guitar pickup cut into the body. Super sick stuff.

Man, I have waited so long to see you do this video, and I was not disappointed :)
The real shame about this masterpiece of work, is that Cliff never actually got to ever play it live, because I know it would have been killer.
For a great, and clear, example of cliff's talent at what he can make the bass do, check out "(Anesthesia) pulling teeth" or the tribute version performed at S&M2 (Symphony & Metallica) by Scott Pingle, where Scott used an electric symphony bass, and recreated Cliff's pedal board to achieve a true sound to the tribute he performed :)

Hey, Great reaction man, i really enjoy it. I think you have clicked on some version of the song that is overdriven, or too loud, because is no headroom in this mix. That is in no way the mix that the original album has. I think is some fan upload. That's why you can't hear in detail what Cliff is doing, or even the rest of the band. Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction, and I think it's great to find people who know music and are talking about it on youtube. Thank you! Greetings from Argentina, South America

One of my favourite Metallica tracks from my favourite Metallica album, there’s a couple of pieces in this track that people don’t always realise is actually Cliff playing on the bass, I’m pretty sure there is a quote from Cliff where he talks about the base solo he plays right after a guitar solo and how he thought probably no one will notice it but it’s there.

Cliff's main sound on bass came from using higher gauge strings
    Instead of thick beefy strings
Plus his pull ups & downs where held by him using the substained petal

This was always a favorite of mine and for the longest time they wouldnt play it live. My best friend and I lost our collective minds when they played it at the Big 4 show down in So Cal. Ill never forget that burst of childhood excitement when the song started. Its a concert moment that will always stick with me.
Give To Live Is To Die off of justice a try. Its techincally not an instrumental because they added a small spoken word section. It was the last of Cliffs riffs to be used on an album. Sadly you wont find it live as they have only ever played it once in public.

Another inquiry answered. Reach of the first for albums have one instrumental track. First album, that track is Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) which is a bass solo by Cliff. Second album the closing track, Call of Cthulhu. Master of Puppets, Orion. And Justice for All, To Live is to Die. The primary composer for each of these songs is Cliff Burton.
    Each is worth a listen.
