It's up there. This is all subjective but Good times bad times is probably best 1st song 1st album in rock Best into I give to El Gordo's Revenge 10" from mid 90s They got Dolomite to say "Ladies and gentlemens I'm Dolomite and I'm here to tell you, El Gordo's Revenge RULES baby, and I ain't lying"
The pivot point LP for this band , this emerges as a record the grabs you by the lapels, Captain coming out of his funk with both guns blazing. The band firing on all cylinders
As a metal head rocker, I have to say that this still one of my favourite tracks!! Saw them live in 1985 in Hammersmith Palais with Doctor & The Medics and 999 supporting Tried to spike my long hair, but four bars of soap and three cans of hairspray later, we gave up
yeah, why are they underrated? as long as i am alive, they are rated all right! dont you worry about other people's music and (lack of?) taste and just keep them rated...
Who exactly is doing all this "rating"? Is it the same organization that slaps ratings on movies? I keep seeing all this "overrated/underrated" shit everywhere. It makes no sense.
@@Brewzerr I believe they mean by the general public and music listeners. But I also get confused as you do because under almost everyone's favorite band I see that.
Longer lasting than the Pistols, less self-righteous than both the Clash and the Pistols, and even occasionally harder-hitting. The Damned were the cool punk rock band who still had enough brains, but a wheelbarrow of fun. They charted a course through showbiz many other bands would be smart to follow, at least in terms of attitude. They were 'blokes' just like you, not full of themselves. This entire album is a masterpiece.
It certainly is a piece of wonder this album....I think it's definitely their best (albeit Black Album, Strawberries and Grave Disorder challenging for that spot). A masterclass from Vanian Scabies and the Captain - and in his only LP outing foentha band Mr Algy Ward.. Turn it up to 11.
Sex pistols (johnny rotten mostly) were snotty and all about being purposefully grating, but that doesn't take away from their impact and influence overall on punk and music history in general, but the damned really outdid themselves with machine gun etiquette. It blends punk with goth, verging on hardcore, but still has that old school british rock sound turned up loud. It is punk enough to not give a single damn, loud enough to rock and almost be hardcore, yet rocking enough to be a pure rock album. Really good stuff
The Damned were also far more unique and eclectic in their music output. They evolved tremendously throughout their career. No "one trick pony"--no doubt a big part of their longevity.
The Damned were and are pure theatre ! With the on stage presence , and great music to back it up !! And their sense of fun , who could ever dislike this wonderful band ?
Rest in power algy. The damned are my favourite band. Unfortunately I didn't get to see them live till 1981 so never got to see him live. Machine gun etiquette is one of the greatest albums of all time
Great track that charted way before the numbing songs we have in the charts today - proper energy and lust for life - this is when bands actually wrote their own songs and played their own instruments and performed them live as well. Real respect.
I think this is their best song and the best line up. 43 or more years later and it is still incredible. When they came out I read an article in NME or Melody Maker that they were huge Lemmy (Motorhead & Hawkwind) fans. I think they used to almost stalk Lemmy on their scooters as he drove a Harley around London. Hilarious. Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode said Dave Vanian was his hero and emulated him. Their voices are fairly similar and more baritone. Dave V's got a great voice. No one sounds like him.
@@gmantramp404 Yeah I forgot that Love Song charted high in the UK, and they appeared on TOTP. Over here the radio was too bogged down with the likes of Journey, Styx, and Donna Summer at the time.
I saw two wasps fight each other over a dead earthworm while my neighbor took a giant shit in his front yard in broad daylight, and I've always been into midget porn.
The opening spoken part is the actor Jack Howarth who famously played grumpy old man Albert Tatlock in Coronation Street from the first episode in 1960 to 1984. He didn't record the piece specially for the Damned though.Captain said they just lifted the 2 phrases 'Ladies and Gentlemen' and 'How do?' from some spoken wordr ecording Howarth had appeared on - a play I think. Brilliant as ever by the Damned - classic comedy and great music.
I was a bit too old for Punk when it obliterated much that had gone before in 1976 but I've always had time for this lot. I think it was the Captain Sensible factor wot dun it !
Absolutely brilliant energetic music from the most exciting band of the later 20th century. You smart phone zombies of the 21st century need to rush out and get this album on vinyl, cd, mp3, holographic. What are you waiting for suckers? Hahaha.

I'm here to listen again to the song, the band and that bassline that blew me away sometime in 1980 - Thank you Algy Ward - RIP

Only here for Algy. Brought this when released with Algy cover. Bass line mmmm
43 years old and still obliterates any new music with its mighty boot
Totally agree. What a band. They get better with age ;-)

I'd argue Raw Power from the Stooges still hangs. And modern day, White Light, White Heat, White Trash from Social D
Absolutely

The Damned were the essence of mainstream punk - much more real than the Pistols.
"Mainstream"??? maybe the MCA era (Phantasmagoria and Anything), but definitely not this era. The mainstream didn't wanna know.
