i secretly thought this was the best track on this album, now i don't mind just admitting it. i keep my ear out for this whenever i can ,tremendous song.

IMHO The most under-rated band in human history, Whenever I play my favourite Damned tracks to people who've never heard/heard of them it's always how the eff have I not heard this before, they've never got the recognition that their peers got I mean I love The Clash, The Stranglers, Pistols etc but the Damned will always have a special place for me Cheers Jim, Surrey, UK
The production & sound engineering on MGE remains simply brilliant...just listen to Sensible's guitar 👌🙏👌 Roger Armstrong & Mike Shipley...what a production duo they were on this album. 👍👍👍
Damn. That wall of sound and punk rock fury mixed with aching vocals.... makes this one of my all time fave Damned songs. Period. Awesome to hear again on their 2017 tour.

I am an original 1977 pUnK, I loved the first two LP's despite the band hating the second LP! MGE was released in 1979, when I was in 3rd year at school, it was also the first LP that 'The Captain' switched from Bass to Rhythm/Lead guitar. The Entire LP is brilliant I saw them tour it at Manchester Apollo in the same year, I still love it just as much now in June 2024! dx

I remember how when the Black Album came out and everybody was freaking out saying shit like "they sold out!" and "they went soft!" or whatever, when this song right here (plus a couple others on MGE like "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" and "These Hands") was hinting at what was to come next. It came as no surprise to me when they did an album that was almost entirely dark and psychedelic. It all began with this song, and personally i thought it was a brilliant evolution in style. We can thank Mr. Vanian for this one.
well said, MGE was the turning point, where IMO Captain's real musicianship came into play when he moved on to guitar after B James left. The intros to Melody Lee and Smash It Up are pure Sensible
Dave vanian is a talented song writer. Should get more recognition. In my opinion.

First single 1976 before all the rest of the big name British punk bands. New Rose and what a single it was and they just kept on giving.
Machine Gun Etiquette is a truly great LP.
Masterpiece album
The Captain is the most underrated guitarist of his era. It’s only been recently that I had to admit he was (is) better than Joneses Steve and Mick. He and Vanian invented psych-punk with this track.

This is much better than the pistols. The buzzcocks are much better than the pistols, The undertones are much better than the pistols, the clash are much better than the pistols... everybody is much better than the pistols except for the publicity...
@@aprendizdebrujo100 Yes totally agree, the Pistols have achieved success only through their attitude. They are a great band and better musicians than most people say but they were just Malcom Mclaren's "objects" with no concept or characterization.
It's really cool to see someone talking about the Undertones. People just think of Teenage Kick when absolutely all their discography is a masterpiece (even their 3rd and 4th album that no one likes)

@@JJONNYREPP He was on the first two albums. After Brian James left, Captain took over on guitar. He was originally a guitar player anyway before The Damned, so it works out well. He really is a helluva player.

The Damned the best band in the 21st century and even better through a 200 watt amp with 8 band graphic equaliser and massive speakers in the 20th century. Folk in the 22nd century will love the Damned because they sound great through their 7D holographic speakers. Absolutely brilliant music from the 20th century.

What a surprise after many had counted them out after Music For Pleasure.
"Surprise' seemed to be a reoccurring theme for them throughout most of their career. For the most part they were always a few steps ahead of their fans. Every time they'd release a new album there would always be some initial backlash, and then a few months or a year later, after repeat listening people would finally start to 'get it'... and then they'd go and release another new album in a completely different style and confound everyone again. I think there were a few missteps, but overall the Damned have always managed to defy expectation and stay interesting.

Well, in all fairness they counted themselves out--they were so despondent after MFP they broke up (with Scabies quitting just a few months prior to the break up) for almost a year. And while I love MGE and the reformed Damned they were almost a different group from the Brian James-led group. But yes it was a surprise in the sense they reformed without their founding member/main songwriter and were just as great.

Done a version live in '86 with Bryn and Roman. Slowed down, Shepley's keys put it into Limit Club, 13th Floor Vendetta and Curtain Call territory. It was like a slowed down Psycho/ Eleanor Rigby. It should have been done in the studio. It was that good

Good on ya for actually 'getting' this at such a young age. I was either 13 or 14 when MGE came out, and I'll admit it took me a while to wrap my head around this song and a few others on that album. At first I was only into the more punk sounding songs like Love Song, Machine Gun Etiquette, and Antipope.
Wow, I feel ancient! I was just 20 when this was out. They played The Whisky the summer before and it was wild. Captain came out in a big furry suit and said “This song’s called ‘I’ve Got a Ton of Shit in Me Pants!”, and they also played “Ballroom Blitz” as “(She’s Got) Great Big Tits”. And Rat beat the crap out of some dumb punker in the crowd. Over 40 years ago, and it was an unforgettable show. I hope they can make it to the States with the 2021 reunion tour, but I’m not counting on it.
Fantastic track, has a lot of memories for me. What I didn't fully appreciate at the time was that it was about the affair between James Dean and Maila Nurmi (who hosted late night horror flicks on Channel 7 as 'Vampira). She played a version on the Vampira character in Ed Woods 'Plan 9 from Outer space', hence the tracks title.
Vanians love of chintzy horror pop culture front and centre! Classic track, classic album.

@@Vampire_Nightshade Actually, I keep a very open mind and still rake through the muck looking for rare gems... and occasionally I find a few. However, in my experience the ratio of good to bad for roughly the last 23 years is SERIOUSLY out of balance. There was a lot of garbage back in the day as well, but it was much more evenly countered with a very active and thriving underground and many independent scenes that were cranking out enough amazing and challenging music to provide a TRUE alternative to the status quo.
I'm not saying there aren't any good or even great bands out there today keeping the torch lit. There are, but it's just not the same percentage. Like I said, my mind is still open, and I'm still always on the hunt.

@@graemesmith8068 If I remember right this song is supposed to be about the supposed love affair between James Dean and TV horror hostess Vampira. Well, Vampira was in the movie Plan 9 From Outer Space and I'm assuming her horror show was on Channel 7 (or not but Ch. 7 is just as good as any other). Vampira is the main subject of the song--look her up; she was a very interesting person. Not only is the song great the subject matter is cool too!

Yep. They were smart not to fall into the "punk orthodoxy" trap that was taking shape at that time during the turn of the decade. Some old fans bitch and moan constantly that they "sold out" or that the first album is the only good album, but imagine if they had been like the Ramones and just kept trying to make the same old albums over and over. They would have become a parody of themselves. Kind of like how the Ramones did. After it became this codified thing in the 80's, with uniforms (mohawks, studded leather jackets, bondage pants, patches, etc), punk got real boring, real fast. It lost it's sense of individuality and creativity. Just turned into an army of Wattie clones. The Damned were having none of that shit. Old fans can whine all they want, but THIS old punk is eternally grateful that the Damned kept exploring new and uncharted waters... and it all began with this album.

After Nick Mason's butcher job with the last lp, they came back with this. A Classic.
It also helps that they ALL started contributing to the songwriting process. No offense to Brian James, but he was a bit of a dictator. Only wanted to use his songs and no one else's. The reason the first album was so great and the 2nd one wasn't was because all those songs on the first album had taken years to write. When it came time to record a 2nd album Brian was all out of ideas. Sure, some of the blame can be placed on the producer, but most of the reason why Music For Pleasure was a flop was Brian's fault.

This should have been a big hit song on American radio at the time if they had pulled their head out of their ass for 5 minutes.
The progression should have been that bands like *The Damned, Clash, Pistols* should have become the new Stones, Zep etc but in the UK two things happened !.) Disco music came along & ".) Girls *REALLY* like disco music! The rest is unfortunate history & baron musical landscape for the last 30 years!
Tons of Damned songs that should have been hits... this one, Smash It Up, Wait For The Blackout, Disco Man, Limit Club, Stranger On The Town, Generals... on and on and on... but no. American FM radio was too busy pushing mediocre lightweight garbage like Foreigner, Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon to concern themselves with actual music of substance and style. They still are.
At least the college radio station where I grew up (KTRU - Rice U. - Houston) played the Damned back then. I used to record their punk sets on to blank cassettes, and I think I may actually still have some of those tapes in an old shoebox somewhere in my basement. Hopefully they still play.
