    • @JohnSmith-oe4ci
      @JohnSmith-oe4ci 4 роки тому +16

Glen Matlock wrote the Pistols classic songs & was a good guitar player who revered the great rock bands of his youth like the Small Faces. Johnny Rotten brought the whole cynical & confrontational sneering "punk" attitude that injected the venom into their songs & caused such outrage in that more innocent era. It was a magical partnership but unfortunately he disliked Matlock & wanted him out of the band for being too straight & his buddy Vicious in to make it more in his image - he may have looked better on a poster but it killed the band musically.

@@JohnSmith-oe4ci i don't think there was much thought to making the Pistols in 'his image' by using Sid ,they had very different styles. but Lydon was the 'outsider' in the group. Paul'n'Steve came together & knew McClaren before John, & Glen worked in Malcolm & Vivs shop . Explaining why (Kutie Jones) & his' Sex Pistols 'was already the groups name , on a SEX tshirt anyway. with Steve on vocals & Wally Nightingale on guitar they did play a gig. But Wally didn't have 'the look' so was outed & McClaren encouraged Jones to continue practicing guitar...
McClaren wanted Glen out more than John it seems , Sid had been considered as a possible lead vocalist previously. So Lydon used the opportunity to get a mate in, It backfired somewhat as Sid for many became the main man in the band at later gigs becoming 'the one to watch'

People mocked them in their day and still do today but they missed so much. Lets take the music first; If you play guitar you will know that the song consists of about 4 or 5 power chords (power chords are easy to play for beginners and sound great) So some will say they couldn't play properly - wrong. The riffs between chords are excellent and make it come alive. The drumming is superb, coming in during the A minor arpeggio is a fabulous sound.
The lyrics are very meaningful and of their time. And then there is front man Johnny Rotten. His look is breath-taking when first encountered and his method of singing was 'brand new ' at the time.
These guys were literally thrown together by Mclaren with a 'you learn guitar, you learn bass - you drums and you lyrics. None of them had ever played a note.
To write a song of this magnitude from nothing is almost unbelievable...... it wasn't done for them like today's wishy washy line ups. They wrote and played everything. So despite appearances and reputation, these were actually very talented people.

+Fred Server NO, I'm not American. I am English and I went to see their last ever concert in The UK. Although no one knew at the time it was their last (Ivanhoe's, Huddersfield - Christmas day) and against their image it was a charity concert for kids. Mclaren asked us to help blow balloons up to drop on them at the end. It was like a party all day. I didn't play a guitar back then but in later years I taught myself and thought one day.... I will learn a few pistols songs to impress a few friends of similar age.... it was then I realised how cleverly the songs were constructed. If you don't play but are a fan of the pistols - buy a cheap copy guitar (ebay £70) and a second hand amp with effects already inside it (ebay £100) and teach yourself. (not a practice amp - they really are bad and will make you give up)
This song and others can be played just using power chords (using just 2 fingers) - apart from the riffs which you can learn later as you get better. UA-cam has plenty of backing tracks minus lead guitar that you can use to play along to... First time I played a few pistols numbers to my friends that were around when they were using a ghetto blaster to play the backing track and me on lead and amp - they were blown away.

for me they just epitomise the fact you don't need to be tachnically talented to make great music, or that even if you are technically proficient, sometimes simplicity can say a lot more than complexity. i think they were one of the first to show that agression, not giving a fuck and passion could translate into refreshingly simple, raw music

+Fred Server I started learning playing guitar only a few years ago, and I tackled God save the Queen. Bad choice for a beginner. Who said this music can be played by anyone? It took me almost a year before I could play it in a fair manner (also because of the many incorrect version available on the net - one should get the Lick Library DVD). I agree with you: it takes some genius to put together such music. And, as far as I am concerned, this sound and the message are still valid today.

unbelievably I once heard this in the coop at Swindon in the Brunel centre circa 1978. God save the queen may have been kept from the rightful number one spot by rod Stewart but there is a lot of emphasis on the second syllable of vacant which was shown on top of the pops. its approaching thirty eight years since Sid vicious died. it doesn't seem possible. there were punk nights here at the quantocks on Sunday night. on Monday I was at international where superdrug has been for so many years. I was so sad when sid died. to me it was the end of an era. lene lovich was in the charts with lucky number and I was still listening to sham 69. its a long time ago but I still remember those times with great fondness. possibly music will never be quite the same again. as sid sang: he did it his way.

Turn up "Never mind the Bollocks" and it's hard, heavy rock/punk, political, poignant, rage and a kick to the nuts. Great songwriting and Steve Jones' guitar drove it along, in Australia the Sex Pistols were the shit in '77. cheers.

igor stein Everyone knows most of the punk bands were shit and as soon as they learnt to play properly they became new wave and the cycle starts again. ie. Stranglers, the Clash. When real musicians realised punk was crap and going nowhere, we had a new generation of rock bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Guns & Roses plus all the crappy hair bands of the 80's. Steve Jones even admits he was never a punk, he just wanted to play in a good rock band but McLaren brought Sid into the band for his punk look, he couldn't play, couldn't sing, couldn't write and fucked the band up.

I’m 60 next birthday - I was thinking theyell be a lot of pensioners listening to punk and other rock music. We’ve broken a stuffed up society, or at least the bands have, we’ve contributed by following them. I feel rather cool listening to this at 1am and dancing round my flat. Or doing martial arts moves whilst my father is probably quietly turning in his urn on the mantelpiece 😂

" They couldn't play/sing " was bollocks and part of the swindle. They wrote and executed an album of some of the catchiest tunes ever, but played and sung them with a razors edge.

I know my reply is irrelevant to your comment, but these music videos would have way more views if they weren't banned in Canada and the US, the only one not banned is Holidays in the sun.

The biggest myth in music is they couldn’t play. Sid couldn’t. Steve Jones was an accomplished guitarist, every producer they worked with said so too. Listen to some of the lead guitar runs in this song. It just didn’t fit with the image to act like they spent plenty of time learning their craft. But that’s part of the great rock n roll swindle isn’t it?

Its only really Lydons vocals that give it a 'punk vibe ' .after watching the video on TOTP when it was released , (getting a detention after rushing out to buy & listen) I thought in terms of the few rock/pop bands I'd heard- Cockney Rebel ,T Rex, the Sweet...
