    For running and outside activities, MIP display is the way to go, as display is constantly open and no need gestures to enable it. I want my watch for read statistics and not watching film on them.

    Amoled is for tv's and mobiles, where you watch movies, play games and read. I am a GARMIN fun from fenix 5x, 6x, tactix, 7X and last year epix51.
    Now i am changing back to MIP, it is a watch and you want the info to be there all the time not something to please your eyes.

      Yes you sad it right , to read , and readibility this MIP is terrible everywhere , except the sun sorry .But sun was here in germany 2 months this year all the time rainy, fog , or snow , and shit weather . Thats why I sold fenix 7 because screen was blacked out 90% of year . I bought epix pro and never look back to MIP . But its my personal opinion .

      I disagree the MIP is only good for direct sunlight the rest of the time? It’s terrible.
      I live in the UK and I just found using an MIP display so underwhelming when doing anything not in direct sunlight.
      Go for a run early morning in the dark? Garbage display.
      Run in on a dark winters evening? Garbage display.
      Using maps? Display is not as good as the AMOLED.
      In short UNLESS you’re in bright sunlight the MIP display is just rubbish.
      Battery life? It’s been proven on multiple videos now that AMOLED displays are not the battery hungry monsters they used to be and last weeks not days.

    Long time fenix user I've had the 3 and 5x ordered the Fenix 8 solar to have the MIP. Main reason is no worry about screen burn in issues or pixels going out on the amoled. Since I have long time use from previous watches with the MIP with no issues I'll stick with it. Plus when I'm doing an ultra and out in the sun all day I benefit with solar.

    I brought the Garmin fenix 7x pro sapphire solar for work as it doesn't have that bright screen. The amoled screen is way too bright for my eyes, and the price was three hundred dollars more than the 7X. After a year of constant use i can happily say its just as good as the day i brought it. Awesome review of both versions mate, thanks

  • @essteman8511
    @essteman8511 3 місяці тому +22

    Nice video! Really complete! Personally, I was unsure about the solar, everyone I talked was saying the Amoled was just too bright and beautiful, and that I wouldn’t get anything from the solar technology. And actually not! I got my Solar 51 about three days ago and I love it so much! The readability is excellent, even I’d say I’d wish they update a feature that could cancel de light from the Watch (for example, until the night comes). The Watch its not unpleasant to see, but the MIP screen makes it not really interesting unless you want to check something, so it’s not distracting at all and battery friendly.
    I was also doubtful about the solar thing, but today I made a 4hr hiking and got 253K (it’s supposed to be like 50k/day to get the solar technology working), so it works really well!
    If anyone is doubting like I was, I would say to get the MIP, because the cool thing of these watches is the long ass battery life, and, also, with more battery life, less charges, which is translated into more quality of the battery for a longer time!

    i'm still and will most likely always be leaning towards the MIP version. The burn in problem with all OLED displays is not a big problem for gaming monitors and tv's where the image is shifting alot, but a watch with a constant image, is the exact worst case usage for an OLED screen. to enjoy the longevity of a really expensive smart watch, i'll be sticking with MIP.

Hope I don’t regret not getting the brighter Amoled screen. I like the visual on the amoled model but went with the MIP bcz of the solar and longer battery life. I don’t use my current Apple watch to talk or do phone calls but it nice to get a notification when working out to decide if you want to answer call/text or just ignore. What pushed me to the solar model was once or twice a year I go on a week long backpacking trip so I won’t have to worry about charging my watch. Reading the comments here a lot of people prefer the MIP. Plus I’m about to ditch my whoop strap bcz the fenix 8 has all the same features.

    I think comparing 51mm and 47mm battery doesn't make any sense. 51mm watches have 80% bigger batteries. When 47mm AMOLED uses say 5% battery per hour, it would use only 2,7% in 51mm version (theoretically). You have to use identical size watches for the true comparison between MIP vs AMOLED battery life. Otherwise - great review. Thanks for your work.

    For me the best part of MIP is that they feels more like something real/physical. Amoled doesn't feels like watches, more like a monitor or smartphone on your hand. Mip without auto light will show all info depending on light conditions same as old watches. And if I need more light at the evening or night I prefer to manually click the button instead of watch flashing on each hand move. For my 17cm wrist 47 is perfect. And I'm thinking about updating from 7 to 8 mip just because of flashlight. But I'm not happy that it's thicker than 7...
    Sapfire much more durable than any glass. I have a lot of scrathes on the bezel but noting on the screen on my 7 siphire solar. And in the same time my iPhone have scratches on screen after a week without any hard conditions. Had a lot of screen hits with metal door handles/during car repairing etc - it's nothing for the saphire glass. Bad part of siphire is reflecting. It reflects the light much more than glass and is not so clear because of this.
    PS: great comparing. Thanks

      What are the things you regretted about the AMOLED one?
      I have serious trouble choosing between them. Like the higher pixel density and brightness of the AMOLED, and think the battery life even with always on display is more than enough...but at the same time I am afraid it will be distracting, even if turning the gesture mode off. E.g. if using always on, even when it dims, how distracting would it be in a dark room? Seems weird for it to glow all the time.
      Currently I have a very old Forerunner 235, which obviously has a MIP but most likely a much worse MIP than the current generations and I must say I like that it is easy just glancing at the watch to see the time etc. (unless it is dark of course). Have had no problems with using the backlight when needed.
      While typing this out I guess I am leaning towards the MIP. 😂
      But still, would love to hear your experiences of both screens.

    How long does it take to charge the Fenix 8 from 0-100%? Garmin doesn't seem to say this anywhere on their website. I tried googling it and the best I could find was some websites claiming 3 hours to charge from 0-100% but I don't think that was specific to the Fenix 8.

      I found this: "The Garmin Fenix 8 AMOLED (51 mm) typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to fully charge, depending on the power output of the charger you use. Garmin recommends using a charger with at least 15W for optimal performance. If you're using a lower-power charger, the charging time may increase slightly."

      Don't do amoled. You will regret it. If you are going to amoled you might as well go with apple watch. Garmin is special because of longer batter life, solar and MIP. You are getting nothing special if you are going amoled.

    • @auswi
      @auswi 3 місяці тому +6

      I have the F8 Amoled 51mm, coming from F7X Solar MIP. The battery life on the 8, 51mm is better than the F7X in daily use. I.e. not AOD and no activities. You will get very close to the stated 29 days of use. I tried AOD and all it does is halve the battery life and give you half the image. If you want to look at the screen, just do a wrist gesture (or tap the screen) and set the time out to what you want. For night use, there is an ambient sensor that adjusts the brightness depending on the light levels available. Middle of the day, super bright. Night time, nice and dim. You can also set Sleep mode which can change the watch face to something simpler and change the colour to red. In Sleep mode, wrist gesture is set to off by default, so you need to tap the screen or press a button to get the red watch face. Not distracting at all, as it stays black unless you tap or press, and I wear it every night. I certainly do not regret going with the Amoled. The MIP display on the 7X was the reason I upgraded to the 8 Amoled. But if you're a hard core, outdoor athlete, then the MIP might be the better option. I use a Garmin bike computer for 95% of my tracked activities, so I really wanted a better screen for general use.

    • @jeversace
      @jeversace 3 місяці тому +3

      The screen turns off at night on Amoled, so no distraction whatsoever. If you want to see the time, you press the light button and a very dim watchface shows the time. It's actually less jarring than the MIP at night as the full backlit comes on with MIP if you want to see the time.
