Dr Deacon; 18 speed is same as 13 RTO or Direct Fuller tranny. EXCEPT you can split, the lower 5 base/stick gears, with splitter. Not hard to understand. VERY GOOD in the oilfields, used to work/drive in them, with Power Puppy . (mack)
@@petersack5074 could have done with the regular terminology, crawler (not low, low low or low low low), Range change (low range 1-4 high range 5-8) and splitter (high & low in each gear). Nope. I drive 18 speeds and sometimes split all the way up if I'm climbing a hill with Super B Trains. Each gear is different all the way up. there is no duplication at all. Now after saying all this, the 15 speed does indeed have duplication. What it is is simply is three ranges, and no splitter at all. The blue button on the side looks like a splitter, but it's not. It has three positions for three ranges. If you wanted to shift sequentially in a muddy bush you might start in deep reduction, you'd go 1,2,3 and then mid range (they call low) back to 1,2,3,4,5 and then high range, and then 1,2,3,4,5. It's just that easy. Most guys shift them like a ten speed, but they were skipping low to start out and they were going through clutches like crazy. With a 15 speed with a load you need to start in low midrange, however if you're in mud, you might choose to go into deep reduction to get started. @@hitop2365

I was taught to just be smooth and easy...but done with always clutching. It mostly depends on how you’re taught and if you try it without clutching. Good stuff! 🧐 Enjoyed it. Loved the sound! 🥰
It's so much easier without clutching, once you get the hang of it. Way easier than the synchronized transmissions we had in Europe that require clutching. But no more manuals in European trucks anymore.
My whole life is a lie, I thought that side splitter was used to go from fourth to fifth, and the paddle was used for overdrive. My brain was hurting from trying to grasp that concept. Thank you my man!
I absolutely love your Pete man. When I was a young man we had a fleet of peterbilt trucks. They had the v8 Detroit diesel and 18 speed transmission. Those were fun to drive.
Nice to see a driver who can use the box properly . am 10 year plus retired from tank work in Uk & europe , had a 16 +low Volvo for years . Like you say good for tank work .
Enjoyed the video, I pull liquid smooth bore with a 10 speed, I can see where an 13 or 18 would be beneficial, especially where I drive in the mountains.
Back in the late 70's and early 80's I hauled milk from the farms and broke out in a 2070 International w/13sp. After a bit you get the hang of it and don't even think about the shifting, comes naturally. I drove until early '90 ending in an 89 Mack with straight 6spd. Got into an electrical power plant and went on to retire from that. Sometimes I do miss the driving....
I always use the splitter in high range. It's just easier on the engine, and your fuel economy, because you don't need to rev it as high. 200 RPM splits are great for saving fuel. You are always in the sweet zone. Use your splitter. It's there for a very good reason. Bobtailing? OK, then you can skip it.
Great video on shifting an 18 speed. I drive the same truck, but I have a double turbo Cat, so I shift when loaded at about 15 RPM in the higher gears. I'll run it up to 17 hundred going up hills. Are you shifting with the Jakes on? I shift with the Jakes only on down shifts, because I tend to take my foot off the throttle on up shifts and it screws my floating shifts real bad. I only carry loads of 80,000 pounds and with a permit 87,000 pounds, but I always use Low gear to start off. My clutch lasts forever! When downshifting I tend to skip lots of gears, and sometimes skip the splitter. Other than that I drive almost the same as you do. Great job! BTW, when hauling logs out of the bush in mud, I will split all the low end gears on an 18 speed. Keep up the great videos!
Its interesting how you call it overdrive, in the UK we call it a splitter or half gear. We have similar setups but we call them 3 over 3, 4 over 4 with a splitter etc. I was always told its like 8 gears and you can get half of each of those gears using the splitter. Most trucks I've driven you need to dip the clutch to use the splitter too. I've only really driven Scania and Volvo (all cab overs here). Great video, great descriptions and nice to see how it works in the states.
Great Video! I learned on a 10speed. Frist job was an Auto and only drove a manual several times in the last 8 years while main truck was in shop. Now got a new job and im in an 18speed. Now im a real trucker 😂
good explanation / demonstration. I have seen several other shifting videos and they were very confusing because they jump right into skipping gears so the pattern wasn't clear.
I've been playing American Truck Simulator for like 2 weeks and I couldn't get my head around how this stuff works, especially the Lo gears (didn't know if that was known as first gear). With this video i think i could do alright in a real 18sp now, very detailed! Good stuff! This explanation really makes this look much more simple than I first thought it would be
If you've never driven heavy trucks, that simulator will trick you. You might not get it into 2nd gear, never mind 18th. I'm a driver trainer, and it's funny watching green drivers come in and get humbled real quick. It's not hard for us, but you guys take a while to grasp it. You see them double clutching like crazy and it just grinds, and then we shift it with two fingers and no clutch. It's called rev matching. You don't learn it in a day.
The cabin and the dashboard are a dream. To me, a European, the engine sounds like a heavy ship diesel, it's crazy. As a former sailor, I love ship diesel engines. Our trucks sound completely different. You explained the circuit very clearly. Thanks for your great video! 👍

After a bit you get the hang of it and don't even think about the shifting, comes naturally. I drove until early '90 ending in an 89 Mack with straight 6spd. Got into an electrical power plant and went on to retire from that. Sometimes I do miss the driving....
Try a 15overdrive , with a 4 speed overdrive auxiliary, 60 forward gears 12 reverse gears
Ive plenty of experience driving it , plenty of experience operating the 3 wintches on it too
This is by far the Best video of shifting on UA-cam. New subscribers alert!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Slickest & easiest transmission I ever had was an 18! And when you're empty you can easily just roll trough the gears without using the splitter
@Truckin’ life Great video I absolutely love driving a 18 speed & it’s good to see how you were shifting the gears
Nice you have a kind of 60s style steering wheel.
Best video on shifting nice ever seen hands down.
Some of us call it a half gear here also. My dad called it a half gear sometimes also.
Thanks for making so easy to understand
Omar Peart Hi how are you doing today?

Beautiful truck sir! Safe travels to you and may god forever be on your side
Thank you for that Video, very informative. Drive save always
Great Video! I learned on a 10speed. Frist job was an Auto and only drove a manual several times in the last 8 years while main truck was in shop. Now got a new job and im in an 18speed. Now im a real trucker 😂
Great video on shifting. Thank you
Oh my gosh that cab is beautiful inside and out 😍
#ClutchIsForStartingAndStopping words of wisdom.
I now got it clear. You're a good teacher. Keep it up
Check out the Jamaican style shifting 18 speed that’s really cool
Dope ass truck mane.
Saving up for that cdl A,
Cant wait to have my own Peterbilt
I wish I had a video like this when I learned to drive back in the day. All I got was a big empty lot and sticker above the door.
learned it well didnt you?
@@lindabingham394 kind of like being thrown in the deep end of a pool to learn how to swim.
good explanation / demonstration. I have seen several other shifting videos and they were very confusing because they jump right into skipping gears so the pattern wasn't clear.
thanks i get it now. fair play for giving us with an interest with a great demo of how to do it.
I love your interior! Just classy old school, "mid-century modern"!
Now i know where game company get your cheat code to put in arcades in 90's hehehe
Cheers from Brazil friends mericans!
Bestest normal teacher 😂😂 and that color inside is bomb!!
super cute that you have pictures of you and your lady (i assume) on the cluster. Gotta remind yourself what life is all about :]
