    These are few things I had to learn when stepping up into the big trucks from smaller/light semi trucks, that you might touch on with your own advice and technique.
    Throttle control, not dropping the throttle too much when floating up or down. I drive B double tankers, which fully loaded are 68+ tonnes (150k pounds) GCM. When learning to drive these fully loaded I used to take my foot out of the accelerator far too much, which would cause rough shifts or cause the gear to hold and become difficult to release because the transmission would reload with decelaration forces/weight. I learnt the correct pressure by keeping the jakes on while shifting up, if you let off too much they would activate. Perfect pressure they stay off, the revs will drop and you can float-shift normally. I did this practice in high box, otherwise you could badly miss and potentially have to stop and start over.
    Gently backing off the throttle when splitting a gear up, letting your foot off the accelerator too quickly/harshly will cause the box to slam the splitter and cause drive train shock loads. Gentle off and gentle on.
    Missing a gear and half engagements. If you miss a gear, usually from under-revving, don't panic. Hold the gear near the gate (the gear tickle) and quickly and smoothly increase the RPM again and it should pop/suck itself in. On hills you will probably have to go back one or two full gear(s) depending on weight and incline. Half engagements, this happens to me most often going from Low-low to first on take-off, hold the stick firmly in gear and lift off the accelerator gently, it should pop in and you're good to go. Trying to drive it will cause the transmission to violently throw the gear out.

    In my driving career before retirement I also drove a 13speed splitter transmission in a Mack. It had low and a conventional 6 speed pattern with the splitter on each of the 6. With a good load each gear had to be split. Like your videos Matt, takes me back to those working days here in Australia 🇦🇺

Thankfully the last 7years my truck had the automatic transmission and when i had a manual transmission it was a 10speed. Really appreciate your time and effort making this video. This will definitely help those that have a lot of shifting to do. Cheers from Laurel, Delaware USA.

    Best shifting video on UA-cam! Minor problem was the cab was too dark to see the double clutching in action. People need to see it happens fast in real time. It's tough that you need to demonstrate it in order to get your license. That's when you have the least experience to achieve a unfamiliar technique.

    Adams family theme song. Best advice I ever got for a full gear change was to click your fingers the same as the song. Each finger click was the shifter movement. Click to neutral, wait, next finger click push it to the next whole gear..worked like a treat and made floating up through the box a dream.

    I never had any formal training on a 10 speed other than a few test drives with another driver who never explained the clutch braking to me. Don't think he knew that. As a result, i would grind every gear.. and forget about downshifting. I never could get that into a lower gear exiting the freeway .sometimes could get into like 8 and just putt off the exit. Don't drive anymore, but I wished i had your knowledge about the clutch. Thanks for your tutorial on shifting. Much appreciated.

    This is definitely the best video on shifting 18 speed transmission. You are definitely a master at driving. You video's has help this 57 years old make the decision on getting my CDL. For heavy loads is better to have 18 ,13 or 10 gears? Which is easier on the engine/transmission.

    • @callthemall
      @callthemall  2 роки тому +1

      The more gears the better for heavy loads as there is less of a gap between gears. I wouldn’t pull anything over 80’000lbs with a 10 speed. 13 is common for 80’000lbs. For what I’m doing (140’000lbs) it’s possible with a 13 speed but much nicer with the 18 speed.

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive Рік тому

      Ten speed transmissions are for light loads. I have pulled heavy loaded Super B Trailers from the bottom of a hill (bridge construction!) and I wished I had an 18 speed. A 13 speed is OK for most heavy hauls but not climbing steep hills, or pulling a load of logs out of the bush in mud. With an 18 speed you can shift without it bogging on you. Fantastic transmission. You can even shift in reverse! I do that all the time. In soft ground you start the splitter in low. Get rolling and shift it. Saves the clutch big time!

      Them Fruitliners in the 1960's were pretty drafty,
      the top of the door was always flopping out.
      Petes and KW had nice cabs.
      I liked 5x4's they seemed to have enough choices to allow any Motor to do the job.
      The NTC 335 with lots of gear choices was great for climbing mountains.
      A Guy in Montana had 2 10 speed trans in his KW, now that man had choices.

    Sure brings back memories. Well done..VERY well done. I’ve driven on & off for a LOT of years, but never OTR..unfortunately, always thought I wanted OUR own rig. Took jobs driving with Halliburton, United Salt/Texas Brine out of Houston, etc. ALWAYS ‘floated’..never double-clutched. Guess it’s sometimes how you’re ‘taught’..in my case, Halliburton. The LAST outfit I drove for was Midway Rental out of Kalispell, Montana. I’m 62 now..and miss it. It gets in your blood. I also grew up in a “trucking family”..a ‘hot-shot’ type outfit. So there’s that. Again, GREAT job!

    Awesome. Never been in a big rig, semi-truck, tractor...but I'd love to do that some day. Fascinating, the options for operating such a transmission. Ever since I was a kid, the best thing about big rigs, aside from the air horns (!) has been the Jake brakes. I never knew the Jake was on while shifting up to get that sound (my Harley sounds like that when I shift up). I'm amazed you didn't even tap that pickup! BTW, you have the whitest set of choppers! Man, these new trucks have so much technology and fancy stuff now. I started driving big rigs in 1976. Drove all kinds of junk, 10 speeds, 13 speeds, even twin stick Macks.
    One thing I don't understand about new drivers, especially younger guys is that they like having their seat down low on the floor, barley seeing over the steering wheel and having to "shuffle steer". I preferred a higher seating position so you can get a good view of the road and everything around you. Seemed like a much safer way to go. Oh, and never would ever considered driving in stocking feet. Good work boots always. If I'm in an emergency situation and have to get out of the truck quickly, I don't want to have to look for something to put on my feet.

    thank you for this informatively video. in europe we shifting gears a little bit diferent first we have synchromesh gerboxes whos allows us shift with depress clutch once but we cant float gears because synchromesh tension do not allow do float but actually some drivers in order to save synchronizers do double clutching and also for this changin gears is smothier. Other diference is we have max 16speed transmisons and the we can split all gears reverse gear low range gears and high range gears. Spliter not activated until your press the clutch. Despite synchromesh gearbox reverse gear dont have synchromesh so if you try shift reverse you will grinding gear first you need stop gear box from spining so in order to engage reverse youll ned shift any gear and while your are depresed clutch not release the clutch and then shifting in reverse

    12:00 In neutral and clutch engaged (foot off the clutch pedal ), the transmission input shaft is connected to the engine which allows the engine to control the input shaft speed. (slowing it down/ speeding it up / matching it to the output shaft speed (which is "controlled" by the wheels))

    Just a little tip for anyone learning. When you’re driving down the road at normal speed and you go to double clutch do not press it all the way in as it will engage the clutch brake and wear it out really fast. Depress the clutch only about a 1/4 of the way as the clutch brake would be engaged around the 1/2 depressed position. In the shop we have to measure that distance from where the clutch engages to the clutch brake vs where the clutch pedal position is.

    #latetotheparty. Shift pattern used to be on the back of the visor in Australian truck . One owner I drove for said he had a Ceramic clutch fitted and only wanted me to use it when moving off.

    Holy crap! You sit a LONG way back from the wheel/pedals!!!!!!!! Each to their own and personal preference, but I tend to sit almost on top of the pedals and steering wheel.... probably because the old jiggers you HAD to sit almost on top of it!

    Eaton Fuller also makes or made a 9 speed that has a pattern similar to a 10 speed. 1-4 in low range and 5-9 in high range.

    Out of boredom, when empty sometimes i'll shift it like a 5 spd. 2nd low[1], split, pull it into the cheater[2], 5 low[3], over to 7 low[4] then 8th low or high[5]; depends on surface.

  • @stephenwallace7288

    Best explo I have seen about shifting.... ironic... I may only be an American Truck simmer, but I do the same... don't split the low range, and split the high range to get up to highway speed.... that is what I found works .... I don't know if you do a lot of mountain trucking, but is it possible you can do a video of going up and down steep grades? Cheers 👍👍👍

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive Рік тому

      The thing you must not forget about going up a grade and going down a grade, is that the speed of shifting will be different. Here's the rule of thumb. Going up hill, or into a head wind, or on soft ground, your shifts will always be slower. Going downhill, or having a tail wind, your shifts will be faster. Now that is if you want smooth as silk shift, and I do. If you just jamb it in cowboy style, you might not notice any difference. This is just for guys that want a smooth shift every time.

    Clutch out, float in. got sciatica but never lost a transmission in approx 4 million miles. Keep up the good vids...

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive Рік тому

      If I am driving a new truck, I do the opposite for the first while. I float out, and clutch in. If you don't know how to get a transmission out of gear with no clutch I have a video on that. For a green driver, the dangerous part is putting it into gear, so I get my students to clutch it in. Anybody with proper training can be shown how to get a transmission out of gear with two fingers. If you have to force it, you're doing it wrong.

    Thankfully, Europe has abolished the manual shift alltogether. For the last 15 years it has been automatic shift all the way. The Fuller was given up in the '70s. If you want a manual shift truck in Europe nowadays, you have to make it a special order. And that costs a lot extra...!

      How is less freedom a good thing? Why ban them? I think skillful drivers line this make for safer roads. Manuals require knowledge. Automatics can make for lazy drivers

      I left my company when they retired their 13spds & switched to all automatics. God, those automatics are pathetic, & they shift at the wrong time, so the motor lugs. * There's no replacing a well-skilled trucker who knows how to shift. ( But the companies want low pay know nothing drivers now, so they buy the idiot automatic trucks for them. It's easier for companies to fill drivers' seats with the know nothing "drivers.")🙄

    Every driver should learn this and then there would be some respect from none HGv drivers. It should be part of the driving test, plus reverse parking a semi! That is my pennies worth. I loved driving a manual Scania. I thought I'd hate auto's but Volvo box's are amazing.

    I know when I talked to one of the UPS freight drivers a while back, he said that their trucks were going automatic. How common is that in the general trucking industry?
