I love the way the shells look streaming through the air, having one ship that's basically a mortar battery, or a fleet of these smaller ships and re-enacting the "we shall fight in the shade" scene from 300 would look absolutely incredible.
Edit: I think you should definitely let them fire backwards, if you ever have a fighting retreat with these things you can imagine the hell it would cause the enemy.

(And may even be first).
Also before watching the video in my tests I've found mortars to be a pain in the ass to design because the shells would keep getting fired into space and never come back down for some reasons. Still that was some time ago so I, Cato Sicarius, might give them another chance.
Speaking of hitting from the top that could also one of the way that could make cluser missiles useful, similarly to IRL anti-tank cluser missiles, as deck armour is often weaker on ships and tanks. It could also be used as a way to test the new HEAT head.
Regarding the angle I, Cato Sicarius, don't think elevation barrels are even needed since as a mortar the cram won't ever need to exceed a 45° angle anyways, even when shooting flyers.

I suggest using an altitude fuse on mortars instead of inertial. To another point, do remember that we have mimics in the game now, which are exceptionally versatile when it comes to aesthetic applications. Basic CRAM barrels make for excellent connection points for large round-based propellers, and CRAM bomb chutes are perfect for connecting APS barrels or poles to the basic CRAM barrels.

Leave it with the motor barrels. Should be a final failsafe type thing if the engines are down, and it can't broadside. It'll still be able to fire in all directions.

Second: Regarding the range of the mortar: Could you try switch-blocks to engage targets with different shell-velocities depending on their distance?
Like: if target >1000m use 500m/s - if 750m use 300m/s etc. etc.
Or you could use 4 different guns/barrels each with different shell-velocities. They'd fire in different arcs, which would also look nice, and also automatically hit the target time-delayed due to their different arcs. Would eliminate the necessity of staggered firing.

How about a smol tonk? And I mean, really smol, something that has a pretty light armament (for FTD), 105-152mm gun. Something that you could spam. I would very much like to see those little tanks with skirts, so that the wheels/tracks are more or less protected. I saw some other UA-camrs putting tiny engines in their vehicles, so maybe this is an option. I suggest the tank has 16 road wheels, or less.

I attempted something way back as a mortar role craft, the FLIP research vessel with an advanced cannon going nearly the full length with low powder loads. Much as in real life, went horizontal during movement then vertical during use. I went with this design for being a slim target, most of the important aspects out of usual naval engagements deep under water, heavily armored keel, and not needing to be all that mobile or fast as it was a supporting roll for large ship/base bombardment!

To maximize damage across the whole ship being targeted by multiple mortars, use separate aimpoint selection for each cannon. Then, you won't have shells aiming at the same block and going through holes.
Alternatively, you could fire the mortars on a delay between each shot so the shots behind the first one have a bit of time to home in on other parts of the ship.

@@elgurkus6885 it's all based on heliblade spinners and I was starting it outside of water, I've checked and all of the spinners are using the correct presets for what they're meant to do on the craft and it handles pitch and roll perfectly fine, it just won't lift itself up.

Altitude fuses set to a few meters under the water are really good on mortars. They are the perfect compromise between pendepth and timed fuses because they will explode after penetrating and after a close miss. I think you can even drop the inertial fuse for more boom because they will probably rarely land on something slanted.

Also you can increase the minimum packing time for the cram cannons so that they don't fire the moment the barrels have cooled down enough to fire. More time between shots means more explodium packed in the shells (up to a point).

So... first Lathrix makes a cute little monitor, now he makes a bomb ketch (a ship armed primarily with mortars). I definitely like. If you fit smoke generators next to the barrels of the main battery, then you can fully disguise it as a little steam ship.
Name suggestion for this one- Jack. Jack Ketch being a notoriously bloody executioner for Charles II. Granted, he was notorious for being somewhat incompetent, but that's because he took so long to kill. Given the flight time of the shells, that seems apropos.

Those video players are also great with the camera's, since they allow you to get multiple perspectives on a battle from inside a ship / control room, my personsl favorite being a 2-axis camera turret to look at the current target

I'm really hoping you get your old viewership back, as I have just found you, and your videos are awesome, especially these since I have no idea how this game works and you make it look easy. Something I'd love is if you were to test out all of the laser weapons, and then maybe making some mothership type vehicle. Subbell squad!
