Etymology wise, the bourgeois are people who lived in the bourg. Meaning people who lived in small towns. In the medieval time, they indeed were quite rich compared to farmers.
Jacques Brel was born in Belgium , he was flamand . But his career exploded in France , he was a great actor too( l'emmerdeur ; mon oncle benjamin ; l'aventure c'est l'aventure )His last record is sad he smells of death but beautiful exemple : les marquises ; Jaures ; la ville s 'endormait ; les remparts de Varsovie ( the only song makes me smile...)
One French comment pointed out an important thing about the song, that I will explain in English : at the end of the chorus, the last word isn’t said « plus ça devient… » (the more they become…). For any French speaker, the only logical word that can complete this last rhyme is the French C word. For cultural context, the C word in French isn’t as bad as for Americans. Most of the time it’s just for calling someone stupid when they do something dumb. But depending on how you say it, it can be stronger and very insulting towards a person that acts voluntarily mean or is being dangerous, or oppositely you can say that affectionately to a friend when he/she makes you laugh by intentionally or unintentionally telling a good joke. In « Les bourgeois » the implied C word is between dumb and being a jerk.
You just got the essence of the song ! You are brilliant. And notice that for once (from your Jacques Brel's journey), the man can be very funny. This song is not the only one humorous lyrics from his "repertoire".
Bonjour.
Hello Uncle D, Try "Jef" a superb song about friendship from him, and also "La chanson de Jacky", and "Vesoul" with English lyrics on Matteo Valentini channel. 😉 Peace, folks. ☮👈😎
Thanks, first to share to english audience other Brel's songs than "Amsterdam" or "Ne me quitte pas". Thanks to explain how provocative, intelligent, and funny was his songs, but firstly so brillant. In this particular song, he doesn't speak about young generatation mocking elder ones, he is much more provocative than that : he says that to be young doesn't protect you to be an asshole, what ever clever you think to be. What is specific with Brel is that he is never "mainstream", he never tries to get agreement from one part of the public, young or older. He speaks about lies that everyone "has" to live with, and the suffer it generates. Too bad you had to hide this great video for copyrights reasons : those TV shows have been paid by the taxes of people of those times, it should be in the public domain today, and it's a shame to see that to share Brel's perfomance is a copyright risk - myself and one of my UA-cam friend had to suffer many "strikes" about Brel translations to English that we used to publish years ago. I feel you really appreaciate and know the artist, unlike those who share Brel just to make some views. Then next to share could be "Au suivant !". :)
Bourgeois people can be rich but not necessarily, it is more a question of state of mind: they are conservative, moralistic, churchy, obsessed with good manners, believe themselves to be more educated than others, dress in the old fashioned way, children in Catholic school, and above all they despise the proletarian class, too vulgar for them ! 🧐
Sorry you haven't right understood the song. OK they are young and they blame the elder, but not because they are elder but "bourgeois" with rigid morality and money for god. The young people dream about become artists and not "bourgeois" but at the end their dream have failed they are now "bourgeois. It's exactly the same thing in" Chez ces gens là " he wants Frieda for spouse she tells him that she will go away but those people don't move. He is the same of all those people and tell you :" But it's late, Sir, I must go home. " Never he goes, never he lives with Frieda. Brel talk only about our failed life.
bourgeois here means those who have power by their work, dominant position....those who decide or rule the society ...very good choice really
Jacques Brel was one of the greatest French-speaking composer-singers of the History! So spot-on on his critique of our society!

The song is not only about generational conflict, but also about the fact that the rebels of yesteryear become the authoritarians of today.
I love this song! I used to sing it with my friends when I was a student. And now I'm quite older, but the irony is not lost to me.
the phenomenal Jacques Brel just funny and smart at the same times

an immortal party banger for the old generation.
bougie comes from bourgeois
actually "bougie" means in French "candle". we say "une bougie" = "a candle"
Listen : Au suivant ! Jacques Brel
Au suivant! is a great, but also disturbing song about how prostitution demeans and marks everyone involved, including the customer.
Encaisser, oui. Comme en boxe. ;)

The "Hotel des trois faisans" is a brothel. But you probably guessed. 😆
Faisan is a bird but in slang it means an Individual who makes a living from shady business, a trickster

If you love Jacques Brel so much I recommand you the song "Les Singes" (Monkeys) Hilarious but serious the same time. Greatings from France
Salut !
Into the original song he say "Dick", but censure comme to cut the word into song...

Bonjour. Vous connaissez la chanson d'Antoine Ellies ? La rose et l'armure. Et celle de Francis Lalane ? La maison du bonheur.
Eh oui... La roue du temps...
Retirement home singer as always! They ALWAYS have it in for their “JB”. It becomes tiring and boring.
Well, just move on instead of complaining. Don't be rude - be open-minded.
