There's no solution to the situations in Taiwan and Gaza, says former Singapore diplomat Bilahari Kausikan.

Most international issues have no solutions, but they can be managed, says Bilahari Kausikan, the former Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
“That’s good news for diplomats and journalists because it means we’ll never be out of a job,” he told NPF International Trade Journalism Fellows.
Taiwan and Gaza fall into this category of management as the best-case scenario, Kausikan said.
The prospect of Taiwan joining China is “nil,” Kausikan said.
“Why would the Taiwanese want to voluntarily reunify? There’s no support for the two extremes of unilateral independence or reunification. Most people want the status quo to remain and I think the status quo can be maintained.”
But while Kausikan criticized China’s leader Xi Jinping as “mediocre at governance,” he does not anticipate war.
“Whatever you may think of the Chinese leadership, they’re not gamblers, and they’re not going to roll the dice with the most important thing to them which is the continuation of party rule. … If there is a risk, it’s going to be conflict by accident, by miscalculation - not war by design.”
There are two scenarios where the Chinese must fight, he said. “The first is a very low probability, high impact scenario, which is if Taiwan revives its nuclear weapon ambitions … the higher probability scenario is if Taiwanese domestic politics takes some strange turn.”
Kausikan says that a lot of international relations and diplomacy consists of keeping myths credibly alive so people don’t take drastic actions - which is true in both Taiwan and Gaza, he said, “which gives you something to write about.”
Gaza has been “ill managed for quite a long time,” Kausikan said.
While a two-state solution is favored by many nations, “I have not seen anybody come up with a viable pathway to a two-state solution,” Kausikan said, predicting that the conflict will remain subregional and not spread. After “mistakes” in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. is “offshore balancing” with Gaza, Kausikan said.
“You have these demonstrations about Gaza at the universities, but the demonstrations over the Vietnam War were far worse. Why? Because Americans were dying.”

Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975. The 1989 attempt in China failed. The 2019-2020 attempt in Hong Kong also failed.

If Xi Jingpin was a mediocre leader, I wonder, is there any leader can be rated as great or even good? I agree with some of his on Gaza and how it should be better managed. But calling a XJP a mediocre leader over the last 10 years of his reign is factually incorrect. I’ve lived in China long enough to see positive changes to the people’s lives, this is done systematically with a consolidation of power but more importantly the right people who see the same picture as him. China came from "nowhere" and in the last 3-4 years has taken over the global electric car industry, making USA have to do 100% tariffs and hand china the crown for free trade. China has full domestic capability to mass produce 5th gen engines and jets. China has caught up in all crucial core technologies and usa has no cards to play, nothing left to ban or sanction. Their whole decoupling and de risking strategy has failed due to XJP leadership.
Even with covid, USA and wests full court press and trade wars and tech bans, China under XJP at its worst has still managed to keep 5%+ GDP growth and is doing better than ever. All serious "structural issues" like infrastructure over capacity and associated bubbles has been popped by XJP and the government intentionally. They didn't bail out ever grande and they banned the Alibaba IPO intentionally. this showed great foresight and courage to stop full on growth in return for more stable quality growth.
All this and more happened under XJPs watch. All massive changes and growth. He turned China from a growing great power into an undisputed superpower and not just a peer competitor but into a superpower that everyone knows will overtake USA in EVERYTHING if it hasn't already.
The Asian century? Nah, because India is part of Asia and because of its mediocre leadership and corrupt and inept system will not follow China's rise.. It's the Chinese century. The historical reason why there should not be war between China and Taiwan: 本是同根生，相煎何太急. Time will resolve the geopolitical impasse: 富在深山有远亲，穷在闹市无人问. The right time is when the GDP per capital of key coastal cities in China, exceed that of Taiwan. Namely, 广州， 厦门，福州，杭州，南京，合肥，上海，苏州，青岛，天津， 北京，海口，........... 昆明，重庆 and 成都.
Xi is an excellent leader contrary to the speaker's assertion, guiding China's economic and technological growth amid great pressure from the west including Singapore. Example of great policy work: (1) long-term investment is supply chain via the belt and road allowing Chinese companies to achieve cost advantage and (2) allowing real estate industry to undergo massive correction to solve housing problem affordability / thus maybe solving declining birth rate. So Xi is an excellent leader taking decisive decision and implementing concrete action.

I watched the speeches/ talks given by respected geopolitics prof Kishore Mahabuni, my own opinion he gave well-balanced views of international geopolitics. I salute him, a true professional geopolitics analyst.
Kausikhan speech seems to be anti China, especially when he mentioned that the North Koreans, Vietnamese, etc, dislike China Chinese. Maybe he has no knowledge of China history. I suggest he watch more of Dr David Qualaalou and Carl to get a better understanding of the geopolitics in this region.

It is utter depression in china and suicide rate has skyrocketed. CCP's iron-fist rule is a total failure.
