      Neither does Xi Jinping, that Hu Jintao "incident" is a nothing-burger cooked up by Western media... Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping actually have a lot more in common than most people recognize. Both are visionaries who are not afraid to tackle the big problems of their time head-on, unlike most of their colleagues and contemporaries who follow the path of least resistance. The main difference between Xi Jinping and Deng Xiaoping is simply that the two are facing very different challenges in a very different political/economic/social/technological setting. That's why it's such a bad take when Western analysts contrast Xi Jinping with Deng Xiaoping by saying that the latter was reform-oriented while Xi Jinping allegedly is not. Actually, both are reform-oriented, it's just that different reforms are needed today compared to 40 years ago...

      @@greekenderman2005 In my view, the political system in Western countries like your country cannot produce such leader as Deng, unleash you change or reform your system close to China's. Under your democracy and freedom, leaders must be elected through one person one vote. So the candidate must satisfy the immediate or instant requirements to get elected and cannot give long-term plan for the whole country, coz the new leader may overturn the previous' policies or plans very easily. Then the political engine may idle/ tick over.

But ours can get things done but sometimes not so procedurally democratic as yours. The common people only want concrete benefits and they don't care too much about the political prodecures. We also have procedures, but some are internal operation. This is true.
      However, our leaders are not down to earth and have already abandoned the idealism as of now. They make long term plans for the country and also care about the daily affairs especially the people's livelihood.

      @@greekenderman2005 when Deng was in power in 1980s, he was making plan for China , which would span four generations until 2050s. His very words: I can't live until then, but I am responsible to make the plans for the people and the country then.
      His three-step development strategy is: from 1980-1990, addressing the people's problems of food and clothing; from 1990 to 2000, making people reach the “better-off level” for the people's livelihood; from 2000 to 2050, with 30-50 years of hard work, making China basically realize the modernization, close to the level of a moderately developed country.
      Deng cannot imagine the global situation will dramatically change in the new century and also can't imagine China will develop so fast. No one has predicted this. Even in 2002, in the 16th national congress of communist Party of China, the national statistics bureau gave the new leadership the report and predicted that China may surpass Japan in 2030 in GDP and catch up with US in 2050s or longer time. However, we surpass Japan in 2010 and now is running after US.
      These are all beyond Deng's plan but generally the party and government is still following his plan, only making his plan more detailed and feasible through concrete policies. His plan is down to earth and practical.

      Africa would be better off looking to other countries for advice and as role models, China's growth depended heavily on a single party state and cult of personality to grow and to maintain the power of the state there were heavy sacrifices. After the revolution Mao did the same thing that the Japanese did in the Imjin War and invade Korea to kill off all the young skilled warriors so they couldnt destabilize the newly formed empire, and he did similar to Stalin with the Holodomr and starved people into submission to him to maintain the power of the party. Mao also industrialized China through heavy support from the USSR for decades and was pretty shameless about stealing from them at the same time (Chinese IP theft is nothing new).
      Those are all things that most African nations would struggle to do and there's hurdles that many African countries face that China never really did like heavily divided and varied languages and religions and ethnic groups, not to mention serious problems with tribalism in some places. China has always been a very centralized power whereas there have been few centralized African governments that werent foreign powers ruling over Africans so they need to craft a state pretty much from scratch while the CCP had the benefit of a culture already accustomed to and expecting a centralized state, there was already a social contract in place of people willing to sacrifice prosperity and liberty in return for stability and peace.

    What people tend to misunderstand is the fact that Deng Xiaoping success achieved because of what Mao Zedong had put the basic system. Many people think that Mao Zedong was the main cause of modern China suffering, and Deng reversed all of them to make China great again. The truth is the other way round, Mao put a very important foundation for China, such as the tough political system, raising literacy, etc. Deng was the one that know how to harvest what Mao had done. At the time Deng take the leader position, many talented men had been in the government. He did correct Mao mistakes, but Mao's contribution weigh more than the mistakes, although some mistake may be considered fatal.
    Without Mao contribution, it is certainly impossible for Deng to achieved the greatest development in human history. All people who truly understand the great development of China stated this.

    China had to develop economically so it can also be powerful militarily.
    But the exponential economic development that followed Deng Xiaoping policy has also dangers inherent in capitalist system.

    Mao's time was not that bad, contrary to what people tend to believe, Mao has solved starvation which plagued China for hundreds of years, before 1949, famine and starvation is the norm, Mao's famine is, ironically, an abnormality(albeit more due to human error), Mao also eradicated all the colonial and imperial foreign influence on China, which helped Deng's reform of China's economy (otherwise, why China's opening up is successful while so many are not). And Mao has given China a fairly good rudimentary educational system, which helped Deng's reform by bringing up an entire generation of educated workforce
    Today's mainstream narrative separates Mao and Deng's era, Mao is the baddy and messed up everything and Deng is the hero and saved the day, but even Deng admits that his reform can not be successful without development under Mao

      Deng was also working for Mao and Deng was the one who solved the starvation, not Mao. Mao fired Deng several times and within those periods when Deng was temporarily fired starvation also came back several times because of Mao's principles that did not work. That's why Mao hired back Deng because he knew Deng can solve that problem. Unfortunately you don't have enough historical understanding about this issue. Mao's principles for farmers created the starvation. Before that period there was no starvation.

    • @eIectrostatic
      @eIectrostatic Рік тому +4

      They start the documentary in a very stereotypical way by stating that millions of Chinese died of starvation under Mao but this happened within the first decade of Mao's rule. Lots of Chinese also starved to death in the decades preceding Mao's rule and one should not forget that the US and other Western countries instituted a blockade against the People's Republic of China and refused to sell China grain. And while millions of Chinese did starve to death in the early years of Mao's rule, it should also be mentioned that hundreds of millions of Chinese were born under Mao's rule, and not just born but grew up well-fed and well-educated. These Chinese born and educated under Mao were the ones that Deng could later rely on and leverage in pushing to make China the factory of the world. There's a reason why this boom happened in China and not in India with a similar population where most children were malnourished and many could not read and write.
