Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of the Early Modern Era and the English civil war continues. In our previous video, we covered how the English Civil War finally broke out after decades of buildup, ultimately leading to the conflict’s first major pitched battle at Edgehill, in October 1642 ( • Battle of Edgehill 164... ). Many spectators and participants alike hoped this clash would end the conflict, but they were tragically mistaken, for the flawed generalship and heavy losses among King Charles I’s royalist army would lead to a deadlock that trapped the British Isles in bitter civil war for almost another two decades. Charles’ march on London and the campaign of 1643, culminated at the First Battle of Newbury ( • Battle of Newbury 1643... ). In the aftermath, the war continued both in England and Scotland, leading go the climactic battle of Marston Moor in 1644 ( • Rise of Cromwell - Mar... ). This new episode will talk about the rise of the New Model Army and the decisive battle of Naseby which was fought in 1645 ( • Cromwell’s Crowning Vi... ). The war continued until Cromwell ended it in Preston in 1648. In this series we will cover the main battles of the civil war between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians, including Edgehill, Newsbury, Marston Moor, Naseby, Preston, Drogheda, Dunbar and others.

The map of Lancashire preceding the Battle of Preston is a bit suspect. Blackpool basically didn't exist at this time period (certainly not as anything larger than a tiny hamlet), and Preston is a bit too far west-northwest of where it actually is - the town of Kirkham is actually about where "Preston" is on this map.

It was never a republic, they simply removed the monarchy from power. The aristocracy and landowning class still held all the power-Parliament and the nobility were the same thing for the most part.
Cromwell was offered the crown but he refused, taking the title Lord Protector, a title normally held when a king is absent from the throne (equivalent is Guardian of Scotland).
England, Scotland and Ireland were still kingdoms, simply without a king.

14:20 - Colchester is in Essex, not Kent.
The siege of Colchester is - allegedly - the source of a nursery rhyme. The Royalist defenders (all the King's men) had a squat mortar nicknamed Humpty Dumpty (at the time, a common nickname for any fat person). The hoisted this up onto the tower of a church that was built into the old Roman walls (Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall). The Parliamentary artillery targeted the tower and damaged it, causing Humpty Dumpty to "have a great fall." The mortar could not be brought back into action, and the garrison surrendered shortly afterwards.
To this day, you an see the extent of the damage to the tower, as it was repaired with slightly different-coloured bricks.

Though I have a minor correction: the Parliamentarian commander at the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold was named Sir William Brereton, not Richard Brereton.
He had been besieging Chester earlier in the war, and at Stow-on-the-Wold he was accompanied by Colonel Thomas Morgan when they defeated Astley.

Sadly I must play the pedantic old bore card.
Being the king of England did not and does not mean that you are an English king.
Charles I was a Scot, born in Scotland with a Scottish father and a Danish mother.
Thanks to the accession of his father James to the English throne, he was the king of three Kingdoms, and ruler of Wales, which they regarded as a principality.
He was the king of Scotland and Ireland as well as England.
Imagine being an English Parliamentarian who has seen the fears of Parliament that James would attempt to rule England in the same way as he ruled Scotland realised in his son Charles.
Your country has endured a civil war, and Charles tries again to take control and rule as a divinely ordained king.
He is in your hands because after he had been defeated, he believed that his fellow countrymen would treat him better than the English Parliament, and he placed himself in their mercy.
They promptly sold him to the English for £100,000 and the promise of even more money in the near future.
So the Scots handed him over to you, and he continued to plot and scheme, despite being offered very generous terms.
The Scots invade again and are defeated at Preston and Winwick.
Little wonder he was known as that man of blood.

The Scottish invasions would have followed the route of the old Roman coast road, and thence the A49 Trunk Road.
Preston, Wigan and Winwick ( Winnick, the second W is silent) are all on this road, which runs from Herefordshire to Bamber Bridge, site of the infamous Battle of Bamber Bridge in 1943.
Preston was known as Proud Preston. Pious was sometimes added, as was Papist due to the large number of Catholic recusants there and in Lancashire in general.
There are two monuments of note. Warrington, which was then in Lancashire, has a statue of Cromwell.
There were objections from the local Irish community*, which were duly noted and ignored. Queen Victoria was kept away from the statue when she visited the town.
The second is from the Anglo-Scottish War of 1651 on the A49 at Swinley, and it commemorates the death in battle of Sir Thomas Tyldsley. Sir Thomas was a Catholic supporter of the Stuart's, and was known as finest knight in England.
    * Lancashire has a large population of people of Irish descent.
