    Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the First Crusade continues with the aftermath of the battle of Civetot of 1096 ( • People's Crusade: Batt... ) during the so-called People's Crusade of the First Crusade and the battle of Nicaea of 1097 ( • Princes' Crusade Begin... ) as the Princes' Crusade began. The Crusaders continued moving into the Asia Minor and had to fight against the forces of the Seljuk Sultan of Rum Kilij Arslan in Dorylaeum ( • Battle of Dorylaeum 10... ) and after the victory over the sultan, the road to Syria was open, leading to the Siege of Antioch in 1097-1098 ( • Siege of Antioch 1097-... ), but the partial victory of the crusaders in this siege was followed by a counter-attack of various Seljuk generals, leading to the biggest battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Antioch ( • Biggest Battle of the ... ). In the aftermath of the battle, the crusade almost collapsed, as the infighting between the princes became too difficult to resolve leading to a Civil War like situation ( • Civil War of the First... ). Despite this situation, Crusaders managed to retain some of their unity and continued deeper into Syria, where they fought at Ma'arra. Unfortunately, that was the battle that turned them into cannibals.

    "Normans, numbering 10,000 in all,
    Joined him but detached themselves from the rest of the army,
    and ravaged the outskirts of Nicaea,
    Acting with horrible cruelty to the whole population;
    Babies were hacked to pieces, impaled on wooden spits and roasted over a fire;
    Old people were subjected to every kind of torture."
    - Anna Komnene, Alexiad on siege of Nicaea (the actual first time they cannibalized the population)
    "Some people said that, constrained by the lack of food, they boiled pagan adults in cooking-pots, impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled."
    - Gesta Tancredi (1105)
    They were terrified and horribly afraid.
    The smell of meat drew them to the wall;
    The Ribauts were watched by 30,000 pagans,
    Not a single one with cheeks dry of tears.
    There was great mourning for the people they were eating.
    - Peter the Hermit
    After that writes “tastes better than pork or venison,” and defecating afterwards on the tombs of the cemetery
    Most comprehensive account with regards to Maa'ra is given by William of Tyre; Saracen spies are clearly hiding among the Crusaders’ troops, since the enemy steadily anticipates every decision made by the Christian barons, to the point that the situation is becoming unbearable for the commanders. Bohemond claims in front of the council that he has found a solution to the problem and asks permission to implement it. At sunset, he demands for all imprisoned Saracens to be killed, placed over the embers, cooked and served to the barons. He further asks to spread the word about what is happening in his camp: he wants all spies still dwelling in the camp to race off with fear but, most importantly, to survive in order to share their knowledge of these events with their commander and with their entire community.
    "The innkeeper gathered to dine, he sent his knights and made for Turks to come who he had in the region been pleasant. He had their throats cut and put them in pots and roused them with fire and the people demanded that it was and that they would eat them at table as their SACRAMENT. The thing spread around the innkeeper, what was done at the Buiamonte truce and everyone ran to see that novelty. The very Turks who had come there to atone were very frightened, and they seemed to linger in leaving the innkeeper for fear that the same would not be done as much of them. When they came to their lords who had sent them, they said that those people who were placed on the seat were harder than stone..." (Heracles vols.,IV, 22)

    The siege of Suiyang was much worse! 30.000 civilians cannibalized by the soldiers who were supposed to protect them.
    Yin Ziqi had besieged the city for a long time. The food in the city had run out. The city dwellers traded their children to eat and cooked the bodies of the dead. Fear spread and worse situations were expected. At this time, Zhang Xun took his concubine out and killed her in front of his soldiers in order to feed them. He said, "You have been working hard at protecting this city wholeheartedly for the country. Your loyalty is uncompromised despite the long-lasting hunger. Since I cannot cut out my own flesh to feed you, how can I keep this woman and just ignore the dangerous situation?" All the soldiers cried, for they did not wish to eat [the woman]. Zhang Xun ordered them to eat the flesh. Afterwards, they caught the women in the city. When there were no more women left, they turned to the old and young men. 20,000 to 30,000 people were eaten. People always remained loyal.

    Muslim tribesmen often beat the heavily armored crusaders simply because the crusaders had too much pride and could never be cohesive and work together without back stabbing each other. Like on paper the crusaders should have been able to wipe the fucking floor with the Persians...but often times the Persians and Muslims slaughtered them.

    This is a rosy picture of what had actually happened, in fact, the cannibalism was driven by fervor and terror tactics first and foremost rather than hunger
    Guibert of Nogent, a contemporary state the reason explicitly: "Moreover, when the pieces of flesh were found among the pagan bodies at Ma’arra, and elsewhere, during a terrible famine a hideous rumor (based on something that had been done furtively and very rarely) circulated widely among the pagans, that there were some men in the Frankish army who eagerly fed upon the corpses of Saracens. To circulate this rumor among them even more vividly, the men carried the battered corpse of Turk out in full view of the other Turks, set it afire, and roasted it as if the flesh was going to be eaten. Then they learned what had happened, thinking that the charade was real, they grew even more afraid of the fearlessness of the Tafurs than of our other leaders. Like the ancient paganism the Turks were tormented more by unburied bodies than any Christian seems to be concerned with his soul of fears damnation." (Guibert de Nogent, VII) Deeds of God, p. 86
    Guibert tries to exonerate what was done, by saying it was done rarely, However another contemporary, Gesta Tancred, using hunger again says:
    "Some people said that, constrained by the lack of food, they boiled pagan adults in cooking-pots, impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled."
    However, Peter the Hermit writes:
    They were terrified and horribly afraid.
    The smell of meat drew them to the wall;
    The Ribauts were watched by 30,000 pagans,
    Not a single one with cheeks dry of tears.
    There was great mourning for the people they were eating.
    After then writes “tastes better than pork or venison,” and defecating afterwards on the tombs of the cemetery
    It was not done out of hunger, nutritional purposes but to terrify the population, not to mention the insanity of the crusaders themselves. this is clear by looking at the OTHER RECORDED EPISODE OF CANNIBALISM during the Siege of Nicea by a contemporary.
    Anna Komnene writes:
    "Normans, numbering 10,000 in all,
    Joined him but detached themselves from the rest of the army,
    and ravaged the outskirts of Nicaea,
    Acting with horrible cruelty to the whole population;
    Babies were hacked to pieces, impaled on wooden spits and roasted over a fire;
    Old people were subjected to every kind of torture.
