How to Sew Folding Cockpit Cushions for Boats

- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Make your own folding cockpit cushions for your boat. This DIY tutorial fully covers how to make an irregularly shaped cushion with a wedge on the back edge and also an incorporated hinge that allows it to fold up for easy storage or to gain access to a storage compartment. If your cushion is simply rectangular in shape, but you want a folding cushion, you can still use this tutorial, just skip the steps for irregularity and creating the wedge.

CUTTING TOP PLATE TO SIZE:
Desired finished length + 1” = Cut length
Desired finished width/depth + 1/2” = Cut width/depth
CUTTING TWO BOTTOM PLATES TO SIZE:
Bottom plate is the same size as the top plate cut size. However, at the fold
position it is cut apart and a 1/2 inch is added for seam allowance to both
bottom plates.
BOXING WIDTH CUT SIZE:
CushionRite® Premium, Standard & Dry Fast: Foam thickness + 1/2” = Cut width
CushionRite® Flotation (Closed Cell): Foam thickness + 3/4” = Cut width
BOXING LENGTH CUT SIZE:
Cut boxing length should be the same length as each short edge of the
rectangular plate. But for the front and the back longer edges two pieces
each are required. Their lengths should be measured from outside corners
to the center hinge location (topstitch). But add an additional ½” past the
hinge location for each of the four pieces required.
CENTER HINGE BOXING WIDTH CUT SIZE:
Boxing cut width/height - 1” = A
(A x 2) + 1” = Cut width of center boxing
CUTTING FOAM TO SIZE:
Add 1/2” to both dimensions to the desired finished size of the cushion. (Basically that means you are adding ¼” to all sides of the foam). - Навчання та стиль
I would absolutely LOVE a video on outdoor patio furniture cushions. We have a patio set and the cushions that came with it are absolutely garbage. They stain super easily, get water logged, and take forever to dry out! I want to make my own!
That is a very good idea. If you use a CushioinRite Dry Fast foam they would dry out quickly. I will add this to my future video list. Thanks!!!
@@SailriteDIY The crazy thing is that I'm not sure its even the foam that's the problem. It seems like the fabric actually holds in water. We have to unzip the cushion and pour the water out. It's really strange
@@SailriteDIYDo you have any other new Portable Sailrite machines coming out soon?
Nicely done. You all are a class act.
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting information and demonstration as usual. Great ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for your kind comments!
Interesting fabric, analog of oxford 1680d PVC? Have you ever had to work with glass cloth?
Why do you add 1” seam allowance for the length and only 1/2” for the width. I assume it has something to do with the cushion being tapered?
Thank you. ( time : 11:11)
The center stitch, which will eventually create the hinge, rests better with a little extra fabric. That is why we added 1" to the length instead of 1/2 inch.
Is it possible to make this hinged cushion with piping? Will the piping buckle at the hinge?
This type of hinged cushion would cause the piping to buckle a lot at the hinge. So.... instead build an actual fabric hinge on the bottom if you plan to use piping.
I❤😊
Glad you liked it!

$500 in material for those cushions??????? what?????
Yep, some upholstery fabric is very expensive!
Regarding the less than $500 dollar price for materials for both cushions......The width of the fabric selected was 46 inches and we had a striped pattern for a cushion that was longer in length than the fabric's width, about 70 inches was the length. So... we had to sew two panels of fabric together to make up that fact and still match up the stripes pattern. That meant we needed 5 yards of fabric for the top plates and side boxing strips that had to match up to the top plate as well. If it were a solid or no pattern matching, we could have gotten away with only 2 yards of fabric for the top plates and boxing for both cushions. So.... we used more than double the amount of fabric required due to the pattern matching for both top plates and boxing strips. We also used a Dry Fast Foam which costs more than traditional foam. Want to save even more $? We used a Sunbrella Awning Grade fabric which cost more than the brand Sattler Awning Grade fabric. Go with a Sattler Marine Grade or Awning Grade fabric and save more $$$ and you still get a top quality 100% solution dyed Acrylic fabric. I hope this helps answer your question.
