You Should Watch - The Sopranos

- Way too many people I know have never seen one of the most influential and successful TV shows of all time, so let's see if we can rectify that. Here's why I think you should watch The Sopranos.
Twitter/IG - gradeuptv
Had to stop halfway through just to express how well made this video is. what an inspiration.
Wow that is a really nice thing to say, thank you very much!
Came to say the same. Thank you for 'some fuckin' levity during a depressing situation.
@@GradeUpTV sentiment seconded
@@jh6025 glad you enjoyed it!
@@Ulyssestnt I appreciate that, thank you!
I'm on my 9th rewatch of the series and it never gets dull. There are so many little details (and particularly the humor) that you don't pick up on during a first watch, definitely a series which benefits from multiple rewatches it's amazing
Couldn't agree more
Bro I have heard that the series is slow I have watched 3 episodes of the 1st season and nothing major has happened should I keep on watching???
@@arnavsharma3303 I can't recommend it enough, keep going!
I rewatch sopranos every 5 years.
@@arnavsharma3303 keep going man I also thought it was boring in the first few episodes, it gets sooooooo much better
Paulie calling ghosts queers and throwing a chair is God level comedy
Legitimately one of the funniest things I've ever seen
This Show is just perfect in my mind. You also captured very good how hard it is to tell others that you know what makes the show so good. Like it's so hard not to exaggerate or talk too long about it. But on the other hand you don't wanna say almost nothing. It's basically impossible to describe exactly what makes the show so great without confusing the other person or overhyping it haha.
haha, yeah it's a hard line to walk. I appreciate the comment, glad it resonated with you!
"What if a mobster went into therapy" They said and made "analyze this"
haha yeah, interesting coincidence they came out a couple months apart
1:21 that is so relatable haha, whenever I have to describe the greatness of the sopranos on the spot to someone who hasn’t seen it before I have like a million things in my head that I want to say but I struggle to get it out because I would need at least an hour to fully explain my thoughts but this vid does it perfectly.
haha thank you, glad you can relate! Yeah, I'm like that with most shows but Sopranos especially, it's almost impossible to run out of good things to say about it
It's been a while, but I've finally finished The Sopranos. Avatar: The Last Airbender was my number one favorite show of all time. Looks like we got a new winner. There wasn't a single episode I didn't love. Almost everything about the show is perfect to me.
For the longest time I mostly limited myself to just animated shows, but The Sopranos was my great awakening to great live action television. I'm now on the second season of Breaking Bad (it felt like the best next show to watch after The Sopranos) and it's already a top of the line show.
Watch Better Call Saul NEXT. It starts slow but by Season 3 you'll be hooked.
The real question is what do you think of the legend of korra
Dude, I don't get what people see in the sopranos. I mean I am trying to watch it but it bored me to death. Watch breaking bad and better call saul.
@@-CornDawg and peaky blinders.
I mean... A children show was your favorite one??? But anyway hunter x hunter is way better then both and by far the best show of all time
3:24
"What the fuck is wrong with you?"
He said calmly.
Yeah, Sopranos was like a trip somewhere else. Every Sunday night I felt like I had been ripped out of a vibrant dream when an episode ended. And there was always a lot to “unpack” and think about.
Another fucking banger of a vid. Hollywood straight up saying "Gangster movies are not profitable anymore" happened to Horror as well in the early 90's-2000's. Thankfully we're in a renaissance for horror because of the Conjuring but we need another absolute powerhouse of a Gangster movie to revive the genre. It may not be dead but if directors can get funding for big budget Gangster movies again that would be fucking spectacular.
Thank you man! Yeah, I feel like The Irishman was a nice bookend to the Godfather/Goodfellas/Sopranos style. If the genre's gonna be revived it would need something way outside the box for sure. I don't see it happening, but maybe in 10 years I'll also be one of the fools who fell for it again lol.
@@GradeUpTV True, but I know there's someone out there right now with a fantastic idea for a fresh take on Gangster films. Just need to see how long it takes to happen.
@@TheHatcho Peaky Blinders
Im in the middle of Season 4, and im completely captivated. It truely is one of the greats; I have to stop the auto play button to the next episode to think about what just happened. James as Tony carries the show no doubt, but the supporting cast is phenomenal. Silvo and his damn sulky expression always gets a laugh. Paulie and his serious tone makes me shutter. I dont want this show to end man. Anyways, 4$ a pound.
What did you have to think? That Every guy who rebels against Tony will result in dying? That's pretty much the whole plot.
Watched Sopranos this year, loved it. Told my friend to watch it, he loved it. Its now another one of those things we quote daily. A good "OHHHH" never goes amiss! If you'd like a newer but different take on gangster film/tv, Peaky Blinders is your guy, check it out.
4:42 The show is funnier than most sitcoms though lol
Yeah, it's pretty wild lol

That's awesome, kind of jealous he gets to watch it with fresh eyes
You are enriching his life
For me what makes The Sopranos one of the best TV shows ever is the character development. They feel so real and relatable-not just Tony, but a wide variety of characters that you genuinely care about. I've never seen this in any other show.
Goodfellas and Once Upon a Time in America are two of my favorite movies of all time. I'm honestly not sure why I'm even still on the fence.
Its like if Goodfellas was 80 hours long.

Thank you that is very kind, glad you think so!
A few months ago I saw this video and it convinced me to watch the show. Now I'm at season 6 and I just want to say thank you for making this video
Thank you, I appreciate you letting me know! Glad you're enjoying the show
Really weird to me that thuis channel isnt a lot bigger. But it just appeared in my recommended, so maybe were at the precipice of something big here.
Haha I appreciate that! Yeah, we're getting some traction, and as a wise Bobby once said "To the victor, belongs the spoils."
The precipice of an enormous crossroads
I came to this video cuz I was considering watching The Sopranos, but I keep seeing clips where all it is is Tony beating people up, but you did a great job of convincing me, imma give it a look
This was good. I haven't stopped watching since 2015, everyday, it's the best ever and it's not close
8:29 - The guy was an interior decorator.
His house looked like shit...
The show is so good that it ruined what Amazon Prime and the other streaming services have to offer. Seriously, I'm at S2 of my sixth watch bc everything else I tried to watch falls _extremely_ short, or I've seen it already. This show has remarkable rewatch value too, like with each watch I catch and learn different things and analyze the stuff between the lines differently. *Definitely* worth a watch!
Haha, yeah that's a pretty common sentiment I've seen from people. I try my best to just focus on what I'm watching within its own context cause a direct comparison will usually be disappointing.
@@GradeUpTV that was my next comment!

If Soprano was on Netflix everyone would watch it and it would end up being #1 on Netflix, now if that happened it’s going to break the internet
Yeah that would be crazy, but HBO would never let that happen I don't think
Wtf didnt realize only 500 subs. You make great content.
Haha, thanks a lot!
Glad you mentioned the end of the episodes, where you just are still thinking about the episode. I do too, but some of the best music is it at the end of The Sopranos, and you just HAVE to stick with the credits.

The Sopranos may as well be the greatest TV Show to exist, at least for me.
Rest in peace, James Gandolfini. You were too good for what you got!
Definitely between The Wire and The Sopranos

@@GradeUpTV Time well spent 👏🏻
If you ask me, ironically, the the reason why the show was so great wasn't the Mafia ethos, but all the fundamental questions of life that's universal, just heightened by the mob life. A lesser writer would've just meandered with pointless scenes and dialogue having pseudointellectual ponderings, but you can see the purpose of every line, every event exploring themes and ideas from the existentialists like Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard to governance and leadership from Plato to Cicero, not to mention psychology not just Freudian but Skinner, Rogers, etc. and their respective views on relationships, problems, emotions and life in general. Some of these were explicit and others implicit. Social issues (ie. Immigrants, Race, Sexuality, Class) were also tackled in a very serious and rigorous manner, not in a lecturing or one-sided manner but a genuine approach to understanding. No other show since, and maybe ever, comes close to as being deep and varied in dealing with these concepts.
Very well said.
Hollywood thought mob movies are over David chase pulled them back in
Great video.
I've nearly finished season 5. Not sure why I never watched it before. Every episode has something hilarious.
I've been enjoying NYPD blue too recently.

HOW COME you have under a thousand subscribers???
I "watched" this show over ten years ago, but I was probably 7 or 8 (which means I would happen to be next to the TV when it aired sometimes and it was fun), so I'm halfway through first season now!
Tony : Who are you
Hank : Im you but better
Tomorrow I will start watching the sopranos for the first time

How is it,
I love the gangster type movies, but for some reason never watched the sopranos. I also recently watched The many saints of Newark, which I heard was a prequel. Might have to finally get the box set and bing it.

halfway the video me thinking: this dude with over 600k subscribers still spends a lot of time making quality content. Now only to see you have less than 1k subs. OMG, you are going places im sure. As a fellow tuber i know how much work it is, keep it up!
Haha wow thanks a lot, that's very nice of you!
Amazing! I’m going to watch it now, amazingly done video! Earnt my sub

I’m through 9 episodes and I can’t be more bored. I don’t even know the plot? “Hey I’m a mob boss and I’m depressed”? If that is true, I’ll pass on this soap. But I’m trying to stick through to find something interesting about it other than the hype.
I don't know what you felt wrong with it? Great Acting, great comedy, great dialogues and interesting characters. And you had the greatest scene in the ending of episode 6. But you still don't like it? To each his own
this is the first video i see of you but the editing is already amazing, congrats! Also you perfectly sumed up what makes The Sopranos so good.
My advice to anybody watching The Sopranos for the first is do no look up or watch Sopranos clips on youtube. It's way better if you go in blind and don't spoil anything.

Oof Marone! Excellent video brother. :)
I enjoyed this video a lot. Thanks for making it.
You are so funny and made a great video, I like this channel
Thank you so much!
Amazing video!
Thank you!!
dude are you... me? everything that i say when im selling this show to someone is what you mentioned - especially in the end when you say that ending every episode makes you think about that episode rather than force you to click "Next Episode" using some cliffhanger or hook. While not every show that has that is terrible, having a well rounded episode that has its own internal conflicts but also adds to the overarching narrative is the mark of a top tier show. The Wire does it. Bojack does it. And I always love it when any show has that quality.
One main thing that I'd always say after all this though, what I consider to the The Sopranos' BIGGEST strength, is the characters. I feel like I know each and every side character in The Sopranos like they were a real person. Like obviously every show develops their A tier characters, and we don't even need to talk about Tony, Carmella, Chris etc. Shows usually ignore their B tier characters but in The Sopranos the B tier characters are usually more developed, fleshed out and nuanced than most shows' main characters. Take Paulie, Bobby, Junior, the list fucking goes on. But it doesn't stop there, then we have the C tier characters which most shows don't even have that feel more realized than some shows' main characters as well. Take Ralphie, Carmine Jr, Charmaine, Hesh or so many that come for like one or a few episodes but still are memorable af.
And it's always the characters, their interactions and relationships driving the story instead of the other way round. What a special show.
haha yeah it's something I really appreciate when shows do well. Trying to tell the best story rather than sticking to a proven audience retaining strategy.
Yeah, I had a part about the side characters in a rough draft. My buddy asked me once who my fav side characters were and we basically just listed names for an hour lmao. It's amazing how much care they put into them, you couldn't swap their lines because everyone has dialogue tailored to the character rather than just generic shit anyone could say.
@@GradeUpTV you could literally create a line rn thinking of a character and I'd know which one it was lmaoo that's how much they brought those to characters to life
Please explain how Charmaine is a developed character
Way to go guy!! XD
FROM ABSURD BOB
Been planning on watching it for YEARS. After finishing The Irishman I decided it's time!
Great video man! Gonna watch the sopranos
Very well made sir.
I just watched the very first episode. It was amazing. It felt like watching a whole movie without an ending and that it's just gonna keep going.
Though I have a question. I've been told by the person who told me to watch The Sopranos that the whole series is great while a couple other people told me that the writers changed after the first few seasons or something and that it wasn't as good after that. I was wondering what your thoughts on that were.
Well, the creator of the show, David Chase, ran the writer's room the entire time, and the series adhered to his vision. Once he found writers he liked to work with after a couple seasons, many of them stayed, and the new ones he brought on for later seasons were great writers. One of them, Matthew Weiner, ended up creating Mad Men.
In my opinion, the writing gets better as the show goes on if anything. Seasons 5 and 6 are arguably the best of the show.
While I enjoy the pilot, I personally think it's one of the weaker episodes. So if you liked the first episode, I think you'll have a great time with the series overall.
The show is basically 86 hour-long movies, some better than others, but even the worst episode of The Sopranos is worth watching.
Maybe your experience will be different, only one way to find out for sure.
Short Version: The show does not get worse, I believe/hope you will enjoy it!
@@GradeUpTV Thanks. Not really sure where those two guys were coming from to be honest, but I'm sure I'll love the show as a whole.

We're in season 3... and I guess I'm just kinda curious about it more than captivated. There is a lot of good in the show, but there are also a ton of random scenes that have no relevance. I'm not sure if it is a heavy handed attempt at the act of living for each of the characters or what, but they ruin it for everyone in the room when we're watching it. For example, there is one of the family's captains and hitters who threatens a woman earlier in the episode for Tony. A few scenes later there is an episode of him getting groceries and talking on the phone to his wife. Zero context and too far removed from the previous scene to have relevance to it. It leaves most of us in the room confused. Does this type of thing get tightened up as we go deeper into the seasons?
If that's the assessment you've made then I don't think the later seasons are going to change your mind at all tbh
Basically, the show consisted of bad guys of the same team getting killed between each other, so any guy who rebels against Tony will die. At first, it was funny but then started to happen to every character resulting too damn borring and predictable. And FBI? They were the most useless in the entire show. They could kill all the informers they had and they didnt even care. And what about the many plots they introduced and resulted in nothingness itself or that didnt contribute to nothing?
Because the show is the day in the life of a gangster and their family
That simple it isn’t a story focused show where every scene advances the story
It is more following the everyday lives of these people
We did finish the show, and yeah... Sadly it did not improve for my household. We had a ton we had issue with by the end. Our biggest issue was his Therapist. Having therapists in the family it was an extremely unrealistic experience for us. A lot of unnecessary moments in filming too. It could have been at least half a season shorter with all the simply sitting scenes there are.@@GradeUpTV
