He was so humble. Julia Roberts told a story about how she was excited to meet him at the Golden Globes and waved at him from her table. He didn’t wave back. She ran into him later and asked why he didn’t wave back, and he was so apologetic. It's interesting how they are talking in this clip how James wasn't like Tony, a bit of a hippy, educated, music lover. So if Tony the Family man and Tony the mob boss weren't close to James, I imagine Tony in therapy was close to his real character. In therapy Tony was thoughtful, observant and self doubting. I remember one scene where he just proclaims, 'Who cares, I'm just some fat crook from Jersey.' Demeaning himself, he's a powerful mob boss, but views himself as nothing. While not as self deprecating, clearly James was this massive figure, big guy, intimidating and a huge star, but he was super humble, didn't think of himself highly. It's an interesting dichotomy, perhaps one Chase took note of.
It seems like Gandolfini's real-life personal was the exact opposite of the character he portrayed - God took this man way too early - RIP James Gandolfini
Michael Imperioli nails it here when he mentions cinematic quality. Every episode of the Sopranos felt like a movie, not a television show. There were 86 episodes and it was as if it was an 86-part movie series.

I'll never forget Mr. Gandolfini. I worked in a catering joint upstate. It was just another Saturday. An 80th birthday party. Turned out it was Mr. Gandalfinis babysitter when he was a kid. One of my favorite lines is when they are pressing the Jewish guy and he says “The romans use to push us around what happened to them?” Then Tony says “you’re lookin at them”
Yes and then the camera zooms out to show 3 overweight and weird looking morons with no morals who have lost almost all ther influence and are unable to overcome even a skinny tied up civilian. Very powerful and clever scene, but ironically not for the reasons you think.
One of my favorite lines is from the pilot. Tony runs over that business man who owed him money. Broke his leg. The guy is crying and Tony says, "why are you crying? HMO. You're covered". the camera shows the HMO sign at the office they are outside of, LOL!

Allegedly James was offered $3 million for a part as the replacement of Michael Scott on The Office when he was leaving. HBO heard and gave him $4 million to not tarnish the honor of Tony Soprano lmao
The way the character development was so good, the most minimalist characters could even have their own plot and they sometimes did. The time Chris and Tony robbed wine from a truck, for example. Chris was battling an addiction but was still there for the ride. The pizza Anthony left. The neighbors. Gosh there were too many things to list.
One of my favorite parts of the show was all the dream sequences- I’ve never watched people re create what it feels like in dreams so closely. Not in movies or shows- nothing made dreams on a screen so beautifully!
Bobby: You know, Quasimodo predicted all this. Tony: Quasimodo's the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Nostradamus, and Notre Dame. It's two different things completely.
@Daniel G I agree with the news nonsense. Im sick of all that b.s another show thats good is Twin Peaks. Twin peaks is on netflix until july the first season is really great.
The greatest TV series of all time. I love Breaking Bad, Entourage, Game of Thrones, The Wire and many more, but for me... nothing comes close to The Sopranos. The character building in season 1 is the best you will ever witness in TV, that sets the tone for the entire project. It truly is a masterpiece and James will always be sorely missed.
I do agree that Soprano's was the greatest and opened the doors to a new era of television which is still chasing elements of the series to this day. It's all subjective, but I myself wouldn't say the Wire doesn't come close. I'd say they are at times neck and neck depending on which seasons or episodes you compare.
@@SuperSnakePlissken Breaking bad writing doesn't come anywhere near The Sopranos. Don't get me wrong, it's a good show, I enjoyed it, but it's filled with over exaggerated cliches, like the cartels, the twins, unrealistic scenarios, the characters don't even speak real Spanish and in general it feels more caricaturesque while The Sopranos makes you feel you're watching real human beings.
We may never see another mob movie from Scorsese, I loved the Irishmen but his regular cast of actors De Niro, Keitel, Pesci etc are just too old. Some of the scenes were just big let downs and De Niro, whilst still has strong screen pressence just doesn't have the acting chops he use to.
He already was in a Scorsese film. David Chase tipped his hat to Imperioli's role. It was the first season where Christopher was in the bakery (or deli, I cant remember which) and shoots the guy in the foot. I laughed my ass off when I first saw that.
Perhaps they could bring his past "Law & Order" character Detective Nick Falco back on one of the series as a regular. I thought Imperioli did a good job playing a police detective.
The many saints of newark... Who else got chills seen James gandolfini son given the Tony look at the beginning I can't wait i'm watching the Sopranos again for the fifth time
@@AvatarRoku999 I didn’t find a single minute boring. I’ll tell you it’s very subjective. Probably depends on how mature you are as well. If I were a couple of years younger probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as I did.
As great as Gandolfini was, a lot of credit is owed to these two guys as well. Michael Imperioli is a really clever dude and absolutely smashed it as Christopher; top 3 best performances on the show, in my opinion. And Steve Schirripa more than held his own in a couple of crucial scenes with Gandolfini, especially in the later seasons. Best cast ensemble ever on a show.
Agreed, it was a very rare situation where everything just came together perfectly, the acting was superb all round, the writing, the directing, the producing, the time period etc. Magic like that never gets repeated. Sopranos is a tv series I can watch again and again and never get tired of it. That is the sign of a masterpiece.
Christopher is such a good character we all still like him after watching him literally punch his girlfriend a few times. Insane when you think about it
@@the0nlytrueprophet942 Just shows how great of an actor Michael Imperioli is. In that final scene with Adriana when she confessed to being an FBI informant, the range of emotions in his face without even saying a word was incredible. He's a very underrated actor.
I think Gandolfinis ability to to show Tony's menacing nature and his vulnerability with such equal mastery was one of the main things that made him so appealing, at least to me. Hes The Man, respected and feared by some bad dudes. But at the same time, his charming little smile, his displays of affection, even his temper tantrums are child like and innocent in a way. Such a great character and James Gandolfini portrayed him in such an amazing dimensional way.

@@-0rbital- he wasn't gay, what are you talking about? Did you watch the movie? They literally talk in his hotel room as he's paying a prostitute he just slept with and he ends up going off on a rant about how "Jewish girls" are supposedly the best to sleep with.

I shit you not I watched the entire series 24/7 for a week straight one summer. Absolutely amazing and I never get tired watching it. Truly a masterpiece and all the actors really pulled together to create something to be remembered.
The writing is so realistic that if you watch it basing it on other tv shows instead of real life you’d be confused by characters. Carmella getting called whiney and what not
Gandolfini was as great as anybobdy ever in this role but imo the whole cast was special. Between the regulars there was not one weak link. Even the smaller roles like Bobby were cast perfectly. And the writing was fucking incredible too. Some of those one liners by Junior, Paulie and Sil had me howling. Imperioli crushed it as the drug addict heir apparent. Not to mention the women who weren't just beautiful stand-ins but strong and passionate with great presence and feel for their roles. Just one of the greatest television of all time!
Steve honestly deserves more credit for his acting. Bobby Bacala was so mild-mannered and unwilling to get heavy in the mob, pretty easily pushed around by everyone from Tony to Uncle Jun, and he's really not like that in real life.
No joke... my wife and I have watched the series about 4 or 5 times... she may even have watched it 6 times... it is without question the best ever made
I remember watching a documentary on American soldiers with PTSD from the Middle East. It took me until halfway through the documentary to realize the interviewer was James Gandolfini sporting a beard. He was too nice for me to connect him to Tony Soprano and I loved him for it.
This show was phenomenal! I lived in NJ for two years of high school. Every episode, I felt I was back in NJ. Every one of these actors was fantastic!!
Ive been rewatching Sopranos videos on youtube all week and now i see Joe Rogan doing an interveiw with some of these actors. Its almost like Quasimodo predicted this!

I just started watching this show. I had seen episodes, know the ending and some key scenes, but watching it all.... He is incredible and deserved everything positive that came from playing Tony
James Gandolfini was such a strong actor. Him and Edie Falco were outstanding together. Even without words in their scenes. Their body language between them was so believable. His son Michael has that same spark too. His portrayal of the teenage Tony Soprano in The Many Saints Of Newark was very impressive indeed.
I have watched many good even great series, but time after time I will return to rewatch The Sopranos. Jim G. led a cast that were at their best as well . Almost every interview his co-stars say Jim was their mentor, their leader….his generosity as far as helping people out financially and in work of acting left a huge imprint on those people. RIP Jim and Tony. The Best.
My dad worked with him at a bar in New York back before he really got into acting. Got to meet him a few times when I was growing up. Very sweet and kind man. R.I.P.
Michael Imperioli was also Christopher, the scene when Chrisi go to Toni to tell Adriana is with the Feds. Wow great acting art, the whole cast fit perfect.
i’m 16 and just started watching The Sopranos already by far one of my favorites shows it’s so well done, especially the acting feels so real to me i love it
I love the sopranos but "OZ" was the first of one of those shows to be fair. But Sopranos was the most famous of the 90s HBO shows. Gandolfini was the best on camera and off. R.I.P James Gandolfini
I have a friend that was one of the soldiers featured on HBO'S Baghdad ER, and he told me that when he was invited to the premiere for it in NYC James Gandolfini could not have been nicer, more down to earth, or more generous. The story he told involved James essentially bank rolling a night of drinking and eating for the soldiers that had attended the premiere and just genuinely caring to know them. His death was a loss to humanity.
James Gandolfini is on the perch with Anthony Hopkins, the most natural and greatest actor of all time. The only person I never knew that passed away that I get genuinely upset about. Legend.
James Gandolfini, John Madden, and maybe Neil Peart are the only celebrity deaths that actually made me feel like I lost somebody. When Ozzy croaks I’ll probably feel the same way about him
@Danny P Al Michaels & John Madden are the voices of my childhood but more so Michaels. I didn’t get to listen to Madden until his last few years. BUT I spent countless hours playing the Madden video games & that’s where I’m really familiar with his voice
I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Steve & Michael at a Tradeshow in Philadelphia back in the early 2000's. They were signing autographs & getting pictures taken with attendees at the old Adam's Mark Hotel off route 1. It's so cool looking back on that now while watching this Joe Rogan clip. At the time I knew The Sopranos was big. Now in 2021 I know for sure that it's EPIC. These are some good dudes, and yes Gandalfini will be forever missed.
I cried when I heard Gandolfini passed. My wife asked me why and if I knew him, but I didn’t. I met him one time at the Bob Hope USO at LAX when I was there to see my son off to his duty station. Gandolfini had popped in to say hello. I spoke with James for maybe 3-4 minutes and he made me feel like we had known each other for a long time. An absolute genuine and friendly guy. I’ve never became emotional or cried over a celebrity passing, but James Gandolfini was an exception.
The whole cast was fabulous, including these two guys. They all made a huge chunk of our popular culture and became the most influential show of it’s time. Fabulous actors including Tony Soprano. These actors were also great.
My wife and I just binge watched all six seasons. It was her first time. I'd seen it before in '07 and still amazing to watch today. The subtle, social observations of the show then really reflect what 2 generations have become.

I'd say sopranos is the best show I've ever watched.

The Wire is also real good. Deadwood is also a great show.
@Daniel G I agree with the news nonsense. Im sick of all that b.s another show thats good is Twin Peaks. Twin peaks is on netflix until july the first season is really great.
nah breaking bad is objectively better.
I would argue Breaking Bad is better.
HBO’s Rome is up there, really great
I've got the Wire and Sopranos as tied for number 1.
It wasn’t just Jim. It was ALL of the actors/actresses. JUST PURELY MAGICAL. THE GREATEST SERIES EVER. 10 YEARS OF ABSOLUTE WONDER. Thank you all.
I hope Michael gets to be in the next Scorsese movie. He is a great actor.
As an underboss or capo
We may never see another mob movie from Scorsese, I loved the Irishmen but his regular cast of actors De Niro, Keitel, Pesci etc are just too old. Some of the scenes were just big let downs and De Niro, whilst still has strong screen pressence just doesn't have the acting chops he use to.
He already was in a Scorsese film.
David Chase tipped his hat to Imperioli's role. It was the first season where Christopher was in the bakery (or deli, I cant remember which) and shoots the guy in the foot. I laughed my ass off when I first saw that.

Imperioli needs a role as a mob boss. dude's a great actor himself
Would lowkey be epic if he joined in on the punisher cast
While he is still in good health and not old they should take thé opportunity
Perhaps they could bring his past "Law & Order" character Detective Nick Falco back on one of the series as a regular. I thought Imperioli did a good job playing a police detective.

Gotta say, I really love Michael Imperioli...seems like a sincere & straight up, talented guy!

I absolutely love Steve. His honesty is a rarity in Hollywood.

I would agree with that
I have a friend that was one of the soldiers featured on HBO'S Baghdad ER, and he told me that when he was invited to the premiere for it in NYC James Gandolfini could not have been nicer, more down to earth, or more generous. The story he told involved James essentially bank rolling a night of drinking and eating for the soldiers that had attended the premiere and just genuinely caring to know them. His death was a loss to humanity.
Did you wear a wire, though?
James Gandolfini is on the perch with Anthony Hopkins, the most natural and greatest actor of all time. The only person I never knew that passed away that I get genuinely upset about.
