The Sopranos wasn't just one of the best gangster shows of all time, it was one of the best TV shows of all time. Andrew Klavan should know, as a Hugo award-winning novelist writing compelling mystery stories, Andrew has broken down the genre on numerous occasions. So, what made “The Sopranos” so great? What did David Chase do - the creator of “The Sopranos” - that transcended the show from simple mafia shoot’em up to a classic American tale? Andrew discussed in a previous episode about show creators falling in love with evil once it becomes interesting, instead of showing the repercussions for the evil in their main characters, they love their characters so much they get attached to their ways and ultimately let some things work out for them. Take the Godfather Part III, that’s why the film was so bad, it lost its essence, which was showing the repercussions of bad actions. The film series started as tragedy, but didn’t end like one. Also “Breaking Bad” - although the show is phenomenal, the creator couldn’t even bring himself to kill off the main character, making the character make the ultimate choice instead and redeeming him. We also find out “The Sopranos” is a little bit like Shakespeare - take a watch and find out how.

Sopranos is so good you forget that the characters are not real LOL rip James gandolfini
I know right it was the best
Did this guy just preached the Gospel while making a movie review ....okay, that is just awesome!
There's actually a book titled "The Gospel According to Tony Soprano".
Or weird as f**k and inappropriate
@@JV-tg2ne inappropriate? What are you, a Catholic grandmother?
Hush, no one cares.
Yes, I’m speechless as well. Just like “Speechless: Controlling Words Controlling Minds”, the newest book from Michael Knowles. 😬
That is Andrew Klavan for sure.
The Sopranos is the best show of all time, and, in my opinion, it gets better with each season.
It really is. I’ve never seen a show that made me think so much. Shows like breaking bad were great but focused almost entirely on plot and the sopranos is in many ways the opposite, because it’s all about the characters.
@@AjaxDGonzothe best show of all time is actually the wire and it’s not even close. I love sopranos and breaking as well, they’re firmly in my top ten shows ever. The wire is the goat though
@@raymondsims7042
What is it's genre? Is it plot based or character based?
@@muhammadzaidmuckba9097 both plot based and character based which is a big reason I have it as the best show ever. It’s on the highest end of breadth and depth.
@@raymondsims7042 is it slow tho? I am currently watching sopranos for the first time. I am at season 3, it is good but pretty slow.
I always knew Andrew was a man of taste. This only goes to prove it further.
Andrew Klavin has a great channel, but unfortunately doesnt have the makings of a varsity athlete.
"K-L-A-V-A-N THERE ARE NO E'S IN KLAVAN *COOKOO*"
I dont think anyone at the Daily Wire does..
You should hear Klavan talk about Quasimodo.
Insight like this is why I love The Andrew Klavan Show.
Wonderful, isn't it?!
Except when he says young men should screw themselves by marrying modern women.
Uncle June is one of the best characters of all time
Take it easy! We're not making a western here.
Funny enough when Dominic Chianese got older, he kinda looked like Andrew Klavan.
It's also interesting to note the parallels Shakespeare draws in his own work and the ideas he develops and revisits. Lady Macbeth's "unsex me" speech is like a dark twisted refrain of Beatrice's "if I were a man" speech in Much Ado About Nothing.
Beatrice laments that she cannot cast aside her womanly nature so that she could kill Claudio for striking and dishonoring her cousin. Beatrice then berates Benedick for not being man enough to kill Claudio for her.
Macbeth also talks about how reason is the only thing keeping a man from committing murder. While Hamlet effectively says that reason is the only thing keeping a man from committing suicide.
I’m currently in the middle of a re-watch of the Sopranos.
I did that recently and was disappointed that there weren't more shining moments. The bleakness dimmed any starry reflection it once had.
Same
Great stuff. Do more of this please
Love the channel. Keep up the good work 🔥🔥
The world: is on fire
Mr Klavan: so back to the Godfather
(/other gangster films, stories, etc.)
Andrew Klaven is pure genius, makes me question my I adequatecies. Klaven you are a true blessing.
Checkout his son Spencer Klavans site too.
Really love your message at the end very insightful
The force is strong with this Jedi Klavan.
Brillant comparison between these two works of art. Great video
Amen, Andrew!!! My inspiration for the day.
About the hell scene I think Christopher us the only one who is realy honest about were he us going. I rember when he told adrianna "that's my uncle Tony. the guy I'm going to hell for." I love that scene.
The acting in that scene was perfect
The scenes that depict the various characters near death experiences where the best scenes. As a matter of fact the end scene of the Sopranos explained as recurring events depicting Tony's hell is awesome.
it‘s the last series I got hooked on. I virtually left TV viewing since then

After 13 years of dating, I finally talked my boyfriend into watching The Sopranos. I watched it when it originally aired and is, still to this day, one of my favorite shows of all time. We started watching last night. And you release this video today. It's the Matrix
If he doesn't like it, dump him.
@@possiblepilotdeviation5791 Definitely!! That's a deal breaker right there! 😂😂😂 Fortunately, he loves it as much as I do!!
13 years? why no ring?
@@sharptakes1662 We've been together 16 years now and no ring because if it's not broke, don't fix it.
@@AndiDoesStuff1973 good luck with that.
To call the sopranos anything less than one of if not the best thing ever created in the history of cinema is a crime
I agree sopranos is easily a top ten tv show ever
Never seen The Sopranos as I don't have access to the channel but it's so true that evil 'entrances' but it's a view on another world. Love Mr Klavan's analyses; how fortunate I feel to have found him. (Oh and he's bang on with the Evangelical approach: 'banal optimism' - he articulates just what I feel! )
Wonderful comparison Monsieur, merci beaucoup:)
"Take only your children, whats left of them"
Dammit man
Yeah the guy wasn’t holding anything back
Excellent point.
Dang. Incredible analysis
Klavan has 100% been shadow banned. I have been a subscriber for ages and UA-cam no longer shows me any videos. The funniest thing? His episodes still get more views than Brian Stelter does on CNN, poor girl.
You and Knowles have the best shows on the Daily Wire
doesn't have the makings of a varsity athelete
Very well done, Mr. Klavan.
I loved the sopranos was sad when it ended
Drew, you should check out the Master of Sopranos blog. The whole sixth season is essentially Tony blowing his shot at redemption. And, as a result, he dies. Patsy actually ordered the hit.
Patsy getting his revenge for the hit on his brother Spoons. Pissing in the pool was just a warm up.
The St Patrick’s day line was so good. Man the writing in this show was genius
10/10 on everything This show is the greatest of all time on all fronts absolute perfect writing storytelling magic masterpiece bar none hands down
There never be one like it on this level again others have tried like SOA and Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad but even those don't hit me 20 years later like this masterpiece rare gem 💎 does I can watch this over and over again and still get something new or something I missed even when I'm already watching this series again with other people and there reactions from 2 other couples or family it's always something I can connect to from the other peoples views while I'm still watching it now with this guys starting all over again and laughing my ass off again and going on another magical adventure of the greatest of all time in tv history period
Sopranos is absolutely a top ten tv show ever made, however it could never be number 1 when the wire exist.
Watched Andrew Klavan starts to binge The Sopranos.
The trailer for the movie just came out
20 fuckin years I've been waiting for this review
But did you compromise?
@@possiblepilotdeviation5791
I wanted ron paul, but I compromised and got Donald Trump instead
Andrew Klavan is a fountain of cultural wisdom. I would like him to review unusually interesting or thought provoking contemporary Christian films like the new Ben Hur, The Apostle, The Rapture, The Left Hand Of God and others.
I also would be very much interested to know Mr. Klavans thoughts about the film works of Franco Zeffirelli as well as his reviews of television shows like Carnivale, The Leftovers and American Gods.
Patrick Stewart knows how to do Shakespeare.
Sir Patrick Stewart just gave me all the goosebumps.
Wow!! If only more people went back to thinking and pondering like Klavan. Brilliant!
You couldn’t grab some Ian Mckellen as Macbeth?
Biblical research dispels lies
Phenomenal ! 😀
So how does Knowles play into all of this?
I loved the sopranos
Sharp a cue ball, this one.
I love your analysis, Mr. Klavan. Would love to discuss Breaking Bad with you. IMO, it had a very Biblical take on evil, where Walter White did succeed in his original mission, seeing his family cared for in the event of his death. However, he, and many of those around him, paid an extreme price for it. The wages of sin...
Looking forward to the prequel Many Saints of Newark. Sure hope it's not just an overhyped inability to let an epic story go. Love the Sopranos.
Loved the therapist show too.
Andrew your show rocks
I think the Italian mobster series Gomorrah is the no 1 italian mobster gangster series now
Nobody ever studies the genocolagies

Sopranos was amazing, regardless of genre. It's simply one of the last truly universally great works of culture. Just before Hollywood became too woke to make stuff like this anymore
The Sopranos was woke.

I usually say that people are gray, they aren't good or evil, they're both. Sometimes they do good things, sometimes they do bad things. My thought is, people who are all good or all evil don't exist or are very rare. I would say this is a subjective view, so it would vary from person to person.

I have never seen The Sopranos. What an experiment that would be. Set me up in a five star hotel, with all the amenities; widescreen back to back episodes for my every waking moment. Take a before and after video of the way I dress, and all my mannerisms. ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶
It was great until the end that left most hanging but it was the man who walked by them last killed them off
There is no definite ending. Tony was originally supposed to die...but how it played out was setting the viewer in Tony's seat. Constant anxiety never knowing when your time is coming. Our time was ended when it cut to black. Not necessarily Tony's...he could have died sure, but he could've lived.
Schopenhauer. -one should memorize all of his famous quotes-they are RED Pill hatd hitting.
Not really dude, sopranos was basically gratuitous Italian American stereotypes extended over several years
If you haven't understood that they were mocking the mobsters, then you have missed quite a few things about the show.
Klavan = Sepinwall
What sort of church does Klaven attend?
He was batpized in the Church of the Incarnation, in New York, because he was friends with the Rector, now retired, Douglas Ousley. He tells everything in his amazing book, “The Great Good Thing”.
I’ve been praying for him everyday for some months now, that he become Catholic.
I just binged _The Sopranos_ for the first time ever last month. it was good, but they could’ve told the same story in four seasons, instead of six and a half…
His point of God's plan being out of time, if it helps to understand it, is similar to the Norse idea of Ragnarok. Ragnarok, while it has yet to come is happening right now, just as it already has happened. Ragnarok is out of time, so our perspective doesn't make sense with it.
yep, it's the best of TV..... perhaps followed by Breaking Bad....and series one of True Detective got me all excited....it was amazing but somehow "lost the plot" in the following series so it fell back to lame status as series... but I have to say... some episodes of Black Mirror are quite exceptional.
It wasn’t until I heard this analysis that I realized that Klavan is showing how Christianity (Western Civilization) is at the core of all good writing and storytelling. It is taking the long view, but then old men plant trees which won’t yield their fruits until long after they are gone.
Very true...we have no comprehension for anything outside of the bounds of time as God does..............................................but.....it is worth noting that the Bible does say that God chose individuals from every tribe tongue and nation on the basis of His own good pleasure and will. That doesn't mean God is arbitrary....it means that we don't really know why He chooses some and not others. In the Catholic, Arminian, Molinist whatever view the basis of His choice is His foreseeing our choice of Him...that is something you will not find in the Bible. And to be honest even if it was...How is it any different if God actively chose one person for salvation and passed over another, versus creating a scenario in which he already knows a person isn't going to choose Him and they go to hell. In either situation, God knows before that person is created that they will either go to heaven or hell. I don't think God is passive or reactive in anything that goes on including the salvation of sinners. I think if you look at the general language of the entire Bible and read it as God is the central character...particularly in the Old Testament you will see that God is very active in everything that goes on regardless of the choices of men. Love you Andrew! Appreciate all you guys do for our degraded culture.
God jesus name be praised ❤
The Sopranos is a great show and I was a huge fan of it a decade ago, but I don't think it's the flawless masterpiece everybody makes it out to be.

@@antwell97 Oh don't get me wrong, I still love the show even though I'm not as into it as I once was, and I'm really looking forward to the prequel movie coming out (especially after seeing the trailer today). I just think the show had more flaws than many people seem to want to admit. One thing that I never liked about the show was the kids, Meadow and AJ. Just about everything involving them turned out to be really cringey.
@@dkamphaus43 I don't know how it could be a flaw. They are cringy and unbearable, sure, but they are true to life. They represent typical lazy and entitled teens. The Sopranos goes for character realism

He is very knowable his name is Jesus and he made himself very available to us.
This is what God says about man's "will" - ROMANS 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
God separated mankind with color, language, and land in the days of Peleg Biblical
Breaking Bad is even better in my opinion.
Just action, no subtext, unlike the Sopranos.
@Schrodinger's Snuffleupagus Can you tell me the themes it tackles then? The lack of free health care in America? Lol. It's a nice action TV show but The Sopranos is much smarter.
@@antwell97 It tackles the theme of human identity and its change. Also the question what is good and evil. All chemistry in the show is a symbol or the illustration of these topics. There is subtext everywhere and throughout the story in Breaking Bad, basically. There's not one scene that doesn't have a deeper meaning.
@@Alex16993 If we knew more about Walt's past I'd agree with you. Since we don't know anything before episode 1 and that his "evolution" takes place in less than a year, I'm not convinced about the depth of this character development. Jesse is a much more interesting character in comparison because he constantly has a dilemma between good and evil. Walt, not so much. He is good until he turns bad and things get worse from there.
@@antwell97 That's alright, we don't have to agree on that. :) I actually do agree that Jesse is an interesting character as well. Actually I think most main characters in this show develop in a very interesting way, which is one of the reasons it's so good in my opinion. For example the meaning of Hanks character as the only real hero of the show and as the exact counterpart to Walt is very deep and interesting to me. I recommend the analysis videos of the channel "The Take". They're great and made me realise the deeper meaning of Breaking Bad. Maybe you're interesed... :)
Sorry klavan I love sopranos, I own the blu-ray. I also love the wire own the bluray. But breaking bad is the greatest crime drama eveeerrrr. I just binged it over the weekend for like the billionth time. 🤷
I understand if people like the storyline of a show, but with the violence, sexual content, language, etc., it takes away from the whole purpose of any plot. We don't need to see people getting shot or having graphic sex on screen in order to prove a point or "help" along the storyline. Look at the old TV shows or movies. Certain scenarios were insinuated, but never shown. That's what made them classy and watchable for everyone. Call me a prude or old fashion, but shows like The Sopranos will never interest me or find watchable because of the explicit content they display. It's degrading for human eyes to take in and destroys one soul for the sake of entertainment. We should ask ourselves, "Would Our Lord approve of this?" Even if it's "fake" or "not real", the graphic nature is still there. Anything like The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, or any other garbage tv shows from channels like HBO etc., should be boycotted at all costs and should never be encouraged to watch...
This is far from the best gangster story ever told.
Deadwood was better than Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
Right?!?
Didn’t see Breaking Bad, I too prefer Deadwood, but the last season didn’t hold up for me.
No, the Sopranos has a far richer subtext.
