    In concept a bit like the Eagle from Space 1999.
    A versatile _rugged_ workhorse that could do anything, without the fluff of larger ships just adding extras on extras.
    Based around a simple chassis thats pragmatic and utilitarian.

      It's very VERY much worth it. Friends of mine whose opinions I respect kept telling me to watch it, but my snobbery kept preventing me. I couldn't conceive of a show on the Sci Fi Channel being *that* good.
      But it's that good, lol...
      Finally I capitulated and watched the opening miniseries, and it's an amazing piece of storytelling. The regular series that follows is one of the most heartbreaking, compelling, and exciting things I've ever watched. It's brilliant.
      My favorite television series of all time remains (and likely always will) David Simon's *The Wire*
      "Battlestar" is a close second. It's that good.

    • @truesus1718
      @truesus1718 3 роки тому +3

      Agreed, but I always wished it were a bit bigger. More the size of a Runabout from Star Trek or the "Huey" helicopter from, uh, the US Army. I think I read somewhere that it was meant to be bigger but budget/logistic restrictions (it's like a set within a set) forced them to make it smaller. So my head cannon is like the Raptors are the size of a Huey (UH-1, and just the cab not the tail/rotor) and the Vipers more the size of a Viper (F-16).

    • @brndnwilks
      @brndnwilks 3 роки тому

      @@truesus1718 Yeah, that was one thing I could tell right off the bat, that it was definitely a practical restriction on the show's part to make it so small. Still, it's size at least makes sense in-universe as well.

    I know that is a bit off topic, but does anyone knows how heat management in the Expanse works? I just had to think about it because so many ships in sci fi don't have those sail like radiators, like those on the ISS, or something familiar for that job, at least not visible.

    • @cy-one
      @cy-one 3 роки тому +3

      No concrete answer there.
      There's mentioning of "heat sinks" in regards to stealth frigates, and there seems to be one hypothesis about using water as a medium to dump heat into, then using the steam as propellant in RCS.
      But... again, no concrete answer.

    • @GabbieTheFox
      @GabbieTheFox 3 роки тому

      @@cy-one heat-sinks would just store the heat internally and gradually radiate it outwards, that's what made the stealth ships so hard to detect prior to combat. They weren't getting rid of their heat, they were storing it but that technology isn't perfect and won't ever be perfect because of the laws of thermodynamics. But I think we're onto something with the idea of using water for cooling, letting the heat turn it into steam then using that as propellant, in the books it's stated numerous times that at least the Roci gets around using superheated steam... So it's only reasonable to assume that that's what every dedicated spacecraft in The Expanse universe uses. For dropships, shuttles etc. It may well be something different. After all we know that the Goliath powered armour used by the MMC Force Recon marines uses Hydrazine for the "jetpack".

  • @chrismarshall8855
    @chrismarshall8855 3 роки тому

    GREAT VIDEO! The closer to perfection you get, the harder it is to get there. For example. The "civilian" version of the Raptor (Red and white paintjob) was used for SAR missions all the way back during the First Cylon War. You see this at the End of Blood and Chrome when Husker and Coker are rescued by a raptor which is the same design as what you see in "The Plan". I would go so far as to say the Raptor as we know it today was designed somewhere at the end of the first Cylon war as a SAR platform which eventually evolved into a ECM platform.

    It's interesting how Race Track ends up such an integral part of the survival of the colonists, nearly every time by accident.
    One thing that isn't mentioned here is how Race Track is also SPOILERS SEASON 1: piloting the raptor with Boomer at the end of season 1, when Boomer deposits the nuke and discovers she's a cylon, shortly before shooting Adama.
    Race Track witnesses that shooting, if I remember correctly she's standing directly next to Adama when it happens.
    She basically has a front row view of several of the most important events of the Colonial odyssey. She's also a mutineer, when that unfortunate incident happens. One of my most favorite lines of dialogue in the entire series is Lee Adama's total shock over realizing that Race Track and Skulls are part of it:
    "Race Track? Skulls? I flew with them!"
    By the end of the series, Lee is my favorite character. Wasn't in the beginning. But Jesus did the writers take him in amazing directions. And Jamie Bamber was brilliant.

    I know in the bsg universe space fighter planes are mostly a thing cause people want to see ww2 style dogfights in space, but from a practicle standpoint imagine if the galactica only had raptors? Their not as maneuverable as vapors but their capable gunships with guided missiles out the wazoo so they could probable still tear through hordes of raiders by themselves.
    Aside from being usable transports their ftl capable so their actually more useful for long range hit and run attacks than vipers. From a practical standpoint aside from maneuverability (which realistically matters fuck all in space) what do vipers really bring to the table than raptors couldn't fulfill themselves.

    Does anyone else feel in retrospect the Raptor was perhaps a bit too capable for such a small design? It feels like it logically would have been spread across a few more hull designs. But from the point of few of the TV show it allowed for very economic story telling and SFX work.

      perhaps, but maybe not. if you remove the fancy bells and whistles its a ftl drive with a empty box and a 2-3 man crew. its easy enough to strap some sensors on and some drones and hook up a control console in the box, or leave it empty for transport. and id imagine its similar for the missiles on the assault variant. not sure about the gatling cannons though

    As a small utility craft it was a well designed vehicle, and I suspect part of its design was because it was portable enough to be used as a prop on the set. For transporting people however it was woofully inadequate. Especially as in show it seemed to be the only for people and goods to be moved among the ships of the ragtag fleet. It's like using EA6 Prowler as a transport aircraft. The amount of Raptors needed to shuttle people and good along the RTF would mean the entire Galactica and Pegasus Raptor squadrons would be kept busy, and not available for combat duties. At least in the original BSG series they had a much larger transport ship. It looked boxey and ugly as f***, but it was a believable transporter. Ironically Colonial One, the spacecraft that was the heart of the Colonial government of the RTF was essentially that much larger transport ship that could shuttle larger numbers of people and goods. It could even land aboard a battlestar.

      Considering that most of the time we were following military or government personnel, seeing Raptors makes sense. I imagine there were also a fair number of civilian shuttles that we just didn't see all that often. We also saw ships connect directly to Galactica for water, so there was probably docking for other bulk supplies/equipment too.

      The information was great, but I hope you don't mind if I make a suggestion to improve delivery.
      My only suggestion would be to try to make it sound less like you are reading from a script, at times during the video it sounded like you were reading one word then saying that word, then reading and saying the next, if you could read a sentence, and then say that sentence, or even just read a few words ahead so it sounds like you are talking naturally rather than reading one word at a time, I think it would sound better.
      I hope I'm making sense there, and again, no offense intended and you are of course free to completely ignore my suggestion, I know a video like this is a lot of work, so thanks for the effort you clearly put into this.

      @@terryforsdyke306 Oh yeah I know exactly what you mean, its an artifact of audio editing and combining different takes. I'm getting better at it all the time though so I can avoid the things that cause me to have to create some of the stilted dialogue.
