Don’t forget about the music, composed by the legendary Andrew Hulshult. He made an ultraviolent, blood pumping soundtrack to compliment the fights in the game.
He took his skills from making soundtracks for Dusk, Quake Champions and TAG 1 and 2, and cranked it up to 1000

From what I understand the checkpoint system isn't really much of a checkpoint. It just respawns you, any progress made after the checkpoint is kept which includes defeated enemies. Which means you can just brute force anything and everything.
Yeah it's essentially god mode. I really wish there was at least an option to have a set number of lives.
That's it basically. I understand that deaths in games resetting progress can be frustrating, especially if they reset a long combat section, but that frustration and risk make winning much more satisfying
To me that is one of the biggest problema with the game.

Never heard of this game until I found it on game pass but I am addicted. The feel of playing this game is about as close to Doom 2016 as an indie game can get and I mean that as a massive complete. The feedback from the weapons and the enemy gibs is glorious. The levels are expertly designed and the whole thing just flows beautifully. If you like this style of shooter play this game!

I bought this a year and a half ago during early access but gave up trying to play it because I couldn't get saves to stick and I kept having to start over. I remember there being save points, that didn't seem to work. Are the nexus points new? Can you aim the weapons with the keyboard like old DOOM or do you still only use the mouse? Now I got to figure out how to upgrade.
I don't know how this game went unnoticed by me, until it appeared on the Nintendo e-shop today. But after watching your review, I'm eager to give the game a shot. Although, I will probably get it on my Series X instead of my Switch. Just to be on the safe side, I want to make certain I get 60fps.
yeah you buy a nintendo for the great exclusives, if you can play a game on another platform it's probably better imo.

Quick note, the secondary fire for the shotgun decreases its spread making for a more accurate shot at longer ranges
How much longer? Let's just say you can get into a long range duel with a sniper and splatter em with minimal effort

love how the blood splashes everywhere after killing an enemy close up
Satisfying gameplay/ challenges and hidden secret rooms are a blast to finish.
CONS:
multiplayer its dead
It's like borderlands and doom had a demonic baby
Yeah at this point it seems like multiplayer's mostly for meeting up with your friends.

Holy $hit! That game is awesome. Loved that you can log in and use the fan created maps and some of the maps will help you get the achievements real quick such as 1,000 and 10,000 kills as well as the 100 friendly fire kills.
Anyone else multiplayer says no content found? trying to play multiplayer just got it from xbox game pass
I really wanna know how the multiplayers runs. Loved this on pc. Just hope servers aren’t atrocious on console. Ill buy it for a few of my friends if it runs well

One of my gripes is the level select screen. It's going for a Super Mario Bros 3 dots on a map thing. And that's cool and all but it makes it a pain to replay levels cus you gotta watch an animation of your dude running around a map instead of just picking a level you want to replay. The shop is also annoying. Instead of it being a menu to buy things quickly and get back into the fray asap it's a small map you're forced to traverse to see if you can buy anything. It's wildly unnecessary. The whole ore system is pretty redundant if you ask me. Why hunt for currency when you can just hide the new gear in the map itself? Last thing is the death system. There is no fail state as far as I can tell. There is zero penalty for dying. All it does is set you back to the last checkpoint but all the enemies you killed are still dead and your health is topped off. So if anything you're rewarded for dying. The game is good. Great even. But it has a handful of glaring issues holding it back from perfection. It's so damn close.
While i was and still am interested in this the respawn mechanics do kind of make it less so to me... Idk doesnt really seem like there is anything pushing you to play better if you can just respawn infinitely throughout an encounter and just whittle the enemies down through sheer grind compared to mechanical prowess.
Then start the level over when you die.
The game has leaderboards to track your score, and has score multipliers based on difficulty
If you don't care about the score I can confirm that it turns into a bit of a drag.
I gagged every time I saw the fire and reload animation.

So Humble Games is a jack of all trades studio? The first game was a combat flight simulator, Project Wingman, basically Spec Ops The Line but with Fighter Jets, way more cynical than Ace Combat 7, and now they release a dark and gory boomer shooter, this game really hitting my old childhood memories of Dooom and Wolfenstein, and is a remind that you not need a 50G game to make a good retro shooter.
I just pre ordered for playstation it looks endless fun.
Just found the game in the ps store saw this review and bought the game it's awesome like a upgraded version of the classic doom I love it

I’ve been bored of everything and so far this is the only game to hold my attention. Just wish more people played the multiplayer. I’ve yet to try it and feel like it has so much potential, but nobody plays it. I’ve been wanting a multiplayer arena shooter on console for a while.
Maybe the multiplier is just not well thought out because it seems like a lot of people purchase the game to play online
They can do the swapping of weapons more intuitive and no confined to a glorified menu where you pick the one you want!is a little baffling to me that with so many options to change weapons they go for this one in the final product

I was so excited to play this game until I found out about the checkpoint system. There is no punishment for death other than having to walk through an empty map. Why would I WANT to have the challenge stripped from me? If I didn't want a challenge, I would be playing on easy. Or Better yet, I wouldn't even play a game, as the whole point is to provide a challenge to overcome. This could have been solved if they made it optional, or if they had manual saves so that we could create our own "checkpoints". I WANT to try to overcome the challenges. Not have the opportunity taken from me. You say that it is a compromise between death being "meaningless", when that is exactly what this is. You lose no progress, yet get full health. Where is the punishment for death? At that point, you might as well just make the player not die at all

Is it just me or does the game look slightly laggy? Besides that, this is what pixelated graphics should be like! Love it! Better than other retro-type graphics of this genre that relied on 2D pixel enemies rather than these more 3D-like monsters.
Don't worry, when playing it doesn't feel laggy at all, it actually feels super responsive.
The game is not laggy whatsoever It has some of the most responsive shooting of any shooter I've played.
@@StrengthScholar0 You're absolutely right. I guess the lagginess came from taking video while playing the game and it caused stuttering (due to multitasking). I've tried the game myself recently and there is no lag when playing.
Yes Prodeus is offered at a fair price but don't use inflation as a justification for its price. You see that argument occasionally when people actually defend a games 70$ price point not from indie studios but from AAA studios that give their CEOs yearly 250 million dollar bonuses.

Looks awesome. Just downloaded it on Game Pass. Loved DOOM 2016 but did not enjoy Doom Eternal, so I will probably like this better too.
Indeed, doom eternal is a great game but it missed the point... Is more a quake champion vibe instead the old dooms game play in my opinion... Too distant from the original concept
@@mattia2023 Agreed. I did not like all the extra bullshit added in that killed the pacing. Too much required weapon switching, scavenger hunts for hidden crosses that endlessly respawn enemies, marauders that can only be hit at very specific openings, ammo that runs out super fast, and many other issues that killed the pacing for me. Every encounter felt the same since they threw in all enemy types on each one it felt like. It lost the progression of unlocking new shit as you go.
@@theconsolekiller7113 Pacing and combat was better in Eternal than 2016, IMO. And I absolutely love both games.

So they actually kept the awkward checkpoint system huh? Well, i guess i'll skip this one then. I don't think i'll get over a save system that rewards the player for dying. So stupid.
I don't like systems that require you to replay sections over and over again. I thought it was a good compromise, I don't see why you'd skip an enjoyable game because of the save system. You wanna get punished so badly, when you die restart the whole level. 🙄
When you're forced to replay sections over and over again, you either have the difficulty set too high or you're playing a game with checkpoint which are too far apart (like Dark Souls for example). I'm not arguing for that to be the norm. I just want a working save system.
The way i see it, in Prodeus you just get back 100 health once you reach 0. Or am i missing something? Prey (2006) was the same way. It rewards you for playing poorly. By the way, this is very much NOT old school or "Boomer Shooter" like or whatever. Quite the opposite.

@@Gnarrkhaz It logs your deaths though. Like yeah you get through the level even if you die, but at the end you're faced with the cold hard numbers telling you your run wasn't perfect. To me that's incentive to try to do the run again without dying.
Also, when I play poorly and I die in Prodeus I don't feel like I've been fucking rewarded. It's a stain on my run. Being rewarded would be like getting a boost or something for dying... it's just trying again, christ. This save system does not make it NOT a boomer shooter. Everyone talking about it calls it one, even devs, it has all the necessary elements to it.
@@ershnuff Isn't picking up a health pack a kind of reward? It's the same thing as dying in this game, that's why i called it a reward.
It's legitimate to not view it that way however if you care about end of level stats, but i don't.
