I am overjoyed with the trend of making new games with a early 2000, late 90's vibe
The problem with this trend is the fact that all of em are made by people who cant seem to understand what made the old games good in the first place, for people a like.
@@persmestari it has finally been said. well done, i wasn't the only idiot to think about it that then
This game looks like the kind of video game the doom slayer plays in his free time
Absolutely worth the money, theres so much talent behind this game that deserves the support. Developed by industry veterans from Raven, level design done by Dragonfly from the Doom community and music done by James Paddock and Andrew Hulshult. And as for the weapon roster, all of the weapons have pretty unique altfires and there are up to 36 weapons planned. And about the reloads, they are 1. very fast and 2. quite satisfying, and as mentioned, much like in Ion Fury/Maiden, can be skipped by swapping weapons between reloads. Theres also a lot more replay value than Gman gives it credit, since the level editor is absolutely brilliant and as it has been avaible ever since the Kickstarter alpha builds and then the closed beta, there is already a ton of custom levels and a pretty decent community around it. The devs are also holding mapping challenges that resulted in some pretty good levels.
36 weapons? man, i didn't have this much weapons since Turok. Thanks, Halo, for reducing the number of carrying weapons to 3 or 2, goddamn it
@@Zontar82 the weapon wheel/menu has 36 slots in total, and the keybind menu has binds for a good chunk of those weapons already
@Nikos papadopoylos really isnt, theres lots of colour, and even though its mostly 15 flavours of techbase, the level design is good enough it doesn't really matter
This comment is probably the best ad I've ever read.
Paddock gets not enough credit, his Sigil soundtrack was fantastic.
E.g.: ua-cam.com/video/ELSJepqYbxM/v-deo.html
I assume this game is before the events of Viscera Cleanup Detail.
Prodeus looks like that game that appears on a movie or tv show being played by the edgy kid
NGL, 2020 has been pretty incredible for FPS games
Still no true Unreal Tournament sequel or spiritual successor though... I suffer every year without one. :(
@Nikos papadopoylos It's almost like quarantine and lockdowns don't have that big of an impact on small teams that already work from home.
I wish you would've showed us some of the level editor, that's one of the biggest attractions to this game for me.
Find dragonflyos on twitch. He streamed making an entire campaign map. There are basic tuts at prodeus official channel.
I am an old gamer, 64, I downloaded this and I absolutely LOVE it. Brings back my doom and quake days. It’s so great they are making these again they have everything the newer games are missing, namely they are a blast to play. Great for the insomnia old farts like myself experience.I built a high end gaming PC with a good sound rig for retirement and this game makes it shine
If you haven’t, check out Ion Fury and Warhammer: Boltgun. Both incredibly fun games
I can’t recommend Ion Fury enough if you haven’t played it. Extremely reminiscent of Duke Nukem, so if you’re a Duke fan idk how you wouldn’t love it.
If this'll really have 36 weapons, I'll probably like to see a Half-Life type of weapon select screen that drops down in real time. Awesome game. Definitely gonna buy it.
@@Shelboooooo Not exactly, I believe he means a system in which you press one key multiple times and it cycles through a list of similar weapons. So if you press 3 it would cycle through all shotguns. Instead of the freeze time weapon table. The table works, but it would be nice for a key based swap personally. Excellent game in every other way though!
The low frame reload animations reminds me of -of all things- claymation.
Maybe someone can make a claymation-esque game in the future?
Well that's how some of the original doom monsters were made with there frames being different positions of a clay version of themselves.
Maybe the game called Hylics? It's an rpg maker game doe, with claymation in the animations of the characters and stuff
The only game that I've ever backed on Kickstarter, and it turned out great. Feels good.
Not to be the WELL AKSHUALLY guy here but...
Kickstarter is actually really good for backing board games/RPG games/P&P games. It's video games that usually suck on Kickstarter.
Although yeah, it is nice to find a gem on Kickstarter/Early Access.
Nice going, man. I'm happy for all you backers. Only title I ever backed was darkest dungeon. So yeah, no regrets there either. 🤘
These guys got the gun shots right. Finally something that sounds heavy, unlike some games that make their guns feel like pee shooters.
THANK YOU. Way too many shooter devs out there that have no idea how to make a satisfying weapon.
@@666louis nono i was totally going for the pee vibes. A pea can make u strong. Pee cannot. We smort.
Holy shit so many ignorants that haven't been close to a gun in their entire lifes. Guns are impossible to accurately record no matter the quality or amount of microphones because guns sound completely different depending on the position and angle of the listener. What you ignorants call "pee-shooters" (wouldn't expect less from 12 year olds) are just sounds recorded from the side of the shooter.
This game is so great, so much nostalgia AND the controls are also perfect. They flow. For players, like myself, who enjoyed the first Unreal, Quake or Doom, I think you will feel at home. The game still feels solid modern in it's execution. I'm curently playing this on GamePass and consider buying on steam, since the developers deserve it.
the last time there was this much fluid on screen was in the Glory Days of Peter North.
That was the name of one of my ex's dad and I always wondered if he knew who he shared his name with.
Was just re watchin' GoT's Red Wedding scene. Don't know why this comment reminded me of that
Me: sees the shotgun exploit
also Me: *gets battlefield bad company 2 flashbacks*
10:30 Enemies spawning in is a staple of Doom Pwads and has been since the 90s... Considering that the game is so heavily inspired by Doom and it's custom content and even features some of the Doom communities best for level design, it's save to assume that the spawning of enemies is very much intended to keep with the tradition of "these older titles".
I'm surprised that Gman doesn't point out the connection with Brutal Doom and Doom wads in general...
My mom literally walked in when the video was at 2:15 to borrow my heater..... Thanks... Lmfao
This is why I love your channel. You always keep me informed of all the great games I may possibly miss out on if it wasn't for you uploading reviews. This looks awesome.
Looks sick. I’ll definitely get it whenever the full game is out
I unironically don't want that glitch to be patched out, I love stupid stuff like that. When developers embrace glitches like that, it's so awesome. Plus, it rewards figuring out this new weird mechanic and using it to just tear stuff up and it's so awesome
the visual style is amazing, I'd love to see this 3d model to sprite conversion used more often
“If you were wondering, yes the shotgun, FUCKS”
Had the pleasure of playing the closed beta and I was already almost sold. Love how the weapon feel and the atmosphere, music and gore were on point.
It's music to my ears to hear that that level of quality is consistent across the board. Definitely adding this to my collection.
I was just waiting for this video! I knew this game blew your mind too
Quad Barrel Shotgun?
Bulletstorm: "What a Rip off"
Doom Russian Overkill: * puts out 4 Super Shotguns at once * "wanna bet ?"
Metro done 4 barrel years ago and killzone had the arc cannon blah blah blah but that don't mean its not fucking awesome in this game. Great game!
Quad barrel was in few movies and in Metro 2 if i remember...not to mention belt-feed machinegun shotgun...
I'm buying this now, it looks amazing!
5:44
I would contend that Project Warlock's Harvester can hold its own. It did four barrels first, and gloriously.
2:36 theres actually an option to switch from sprites to models
They should add an option to have your number keys cycle through weapons based on ammo type (So 1 for bullets, 2 for shells etc.), and then have your last selected weapon of a certain type be the default for when you switch back (So if the last bullet weapon I used was the pistol, then switching from the shell category back to the bullet category would automatically switch to the pistol)
killing floor 2's "Doomstick" is another example of 4 barreled super shotgun
And now it's on GAMEPASS!
"No greater feeling than seeing a kickstarter you've backed reach its goal??" Sounds like somebody's clearly never tried spanking it on meth using a microwaved grapefruit while an elderly Elvis impersonator almost unintelligibly sings "youu eeeyhnnt nuffn budda hoWnd-dog" through his three remaining teeth.
2:23 Whenever I feel down, or just want to take a break from Stephen King’s nightmares we’re living in - all I need to do is tap the UA-cam icon, find you channel, and click one of your videos, and Voila! The grin is on, and before I know it - it’s a smile of a genuine (if a bit weird and twisted) joy! Thank you my good sir for this! Keep “your momma” jokes coming - I’m all down for it!🙌
The dithering in the particles are just charming
The art style of this game is fantastic. It just looks so good.
From "doom clones", to FPS, back to "doom clones" we are I see. :P
I love that everything in that game looks and moves like claymation makes it a 100% more 90's feelin'
i pledged to the kickstarter when you made your last review and honestly it's the first time i've ever been completely satisfied with kickstarting a game
I bought this game because of this review. I will admit, it is the most fun game I've played in a long long time.
"It's just more traditional system of resource management."
Thank fuck. I mean, I liked Eternal, but the constant farming of demons for resources got old pretty fast.
Gotta point out, that I'm pretty sure that the guns aren't really sprites, they're 3d models with choppy animations and filters over em to make em look like pixelated sprites. Either that or the fucking lighting engine is insane, and they made individual sprites with reflecting light boucing off of em at every conceivable angle.
Dat recoil flinch animation, omg
Sexy af
I've become more of a tac/mil-sim dude over the ages, so I'm more about Squad right now, but I can still appreciate just the sheer amount of early access games actually coming out. What a time to be alive for an indie game fan, or just someone who appreciates the quality without regards for the price tag.
I remember back then... 2019. Man.... what a long time back. GOD I hope the world CONTINUES TO BURN.
@Mialisus Don't worry, we all understand the "Let the galaxy BURN!!!" sentiment. It's part of all of us.
@@maledikt Sees username. Sees your sympathy with "let the galaxy burn!" That's some grade-A heresy, brother. I suggest you turn yourself into your nearest Inquisitorial representative for the good for your company and your chapter. Dorn would be ashamed of you.
Jokes aside, to be fair, the creditors will be the last people to go under even if everything went to hell. The day that you don't have to pay your debts because of an economic collapse is the day that you cannot afford to buy food since your money in the bank is utterly worthless. If you're unlucky enough to see such a day, then I hope you live on a farm or in an area with wildlife that are somewhat palatable, because otherwise, you'll be slimming down fast.
I just hope the map i'm working on will end up a success. Also i've seen some boomer shooter youtubers on the board.
Learning i was making a Prodeus map even got my boomer dad interested in that 'WAD' as he calls them from the days he reviewed sharewares while we played DOOM together as 1 player when i was but a toddler. (Maybe he'll be proud of his deadbeat son for once...)
@@killerspinach8256 Considering you took the time to answer that comment : the map is out, it's called THE CHURCH!
Waiting for this game for so long now... Can't await to play it. Frankly, I had no doubts about it, after all the released footage through the development time. Thanks for the great review, as always great work!
Damn, the art direction is awesome. I don’t usually get hyped over classic FPS art styles but this one really seems unique.
"Post-Apocalyptic 2020", sounds about right.
Do a dedicated review about the Code of Honor trilogy!
Saw it on steam when it came out, most definitely looking forward to getting it, thank you for making a review, just incentivized me to buy it even more
Love how the shotgun target redical is the same from turok rage wars amazing throwback
Game is incredible! Can’t believe I haven’t heard of this until yesterday. It’s near perfect. I’d put this up there with Celeste, Shovel knight and the highly underrated Valfaris as one of the best retro styled games of the last 10 years.
Can you re-review Deep Rock Galactic now that it's out of early access? It's improved so much, they added new missions types recently that are awesome, one involves creating your own Sonic Adventure style grind rails!
*Idea for the devs about weapon binding* :
Have *weapon groups* for binding to keys. And make each weapon group customizable.
So, players would see in the key binds options a list of weapon groups (maybe names like "Group 1" or "slot 1") and you could tie each group to a number key. Repeatedly clicking that key will cycle thru any weapons the player assigns to that group. Then you have a separate menu where the player will assign weapons to groups.
I love the artstyle combining retro with modern shaders and rendering
9:01 "the weapon chart is not all that smooth when trying to use it in a pinch". But looking at the footage the game seems to pause when you use it? Doesn't that kinda fix your problem?
Sort of breaks the pace of combat a little when you can just pause it. It doesn't feel as smooth as simply pressing a button.
While from a purely gameplay perspective it does technically work from a user experience perspective it's a less than ideal solution.
making ya mom jokes is the only path towards achieving maximum sonny jim level
Bought it day one thanks to your first vid on the game & checking out the beta, having a blast so far! The game scratches my itch for the classic fps from my youth & its highly recommended. Also much love for sprinkling in some bits of good ol Danny
I used to browse and see if I was interested in what you were showing, skipping a lot of them. The past year or so I've clicked on everything you've posted up as soon as it popped up on my feed. Not sure what happened but yours has become my favorite youtube channel on the platform.
Keep up the awesome work brother. Thank you for your work.
"Post Apocalypitic 2020" oh boy how optimistic of you to assume that we are in the "post" state of the thing
When you said TimeSplitters it threw me back ages....man I forgot about that amazing game. I've played TS2, but damn it was good.
it's so nice to see new games basically rebooting retro shooters. for somebody who wasn't around to play all of the 90's shooters, it's so amazing to have a modern version to play
The visuals are simply stunning. Even watching the video at 2x speed i can tell what is going on on screen, where the enemies are, the blood, the scenario textures... It's the complete opposite of Godfall.
The weapons should be selected as in Half Life then instead of that "wheel"?
9:36 that music sounds fantastic
I love the way the protagonists face looks and the way he appears more ghoulish as he takes damage, he looks more like a creepy ghostly entity as opposed to being generic angry man from a 90s comic we see in so many boomer shooters
Indeed, I was just going to say the same thing. It's definitely a unique and stylish take on the Doom status bar face (with the protagonist's face becoming bloodier and more disheveled as he takes damage).
The devs should definitely take that style element further though, with powerups that will alter the look of the status bar face (like in Quake).
This just dropped on Xbox game pass it's awesome.
The game looks really good but I can't stand the 5 fps weapon/loading animations, needs a smooth animation and it will look 1000x better
The effect of blood on the shotgun is my fav.
The plasma rifle is the bullseye from the resistance games that's pretty cool
Just like what Ion Fury did to me in 2019 (became my Game of the Year), Prodeus is doing the same thing in 2020.
I'm actually currently playing through Ion Fury and I think the mech boss was kinda luck based, I only managed to get through it using a ton of quick saves. Otherwise it's been great, though!
@@WastedMeerkat1 It's been a minute but if memory serves the mech boss goes down so quickly if you charge up the crossbow and empty all of the charged up ammo into the boss.
@@uros.u.novakovic I was able to get him with the crossbow, mines and bombs. Took forever though since I kept doing to its grenades
The weapon animations are really distracting. They look like 15 fps. Everything else looks fluid, but the weapons and that discrepancy looks weird to me.
IDK whether I like it or hate it. Maybe add a few more frames and up the motion blur?
@@immortaluglyfish2724 I don't hate it straight, it was just something annoying while watching the gameplay.
Maybe it can be disabled in the menu. I guess this was an artistic choice and I can see why it was made this way. But the effect is too strong, prominently and is seen frequently, taking up a lot of the screen space. It depends on if this is post processing that can be easily turned off, or created from ground up to look like this.
And who knows, maybe when playing the game it feels or looks differently or I get used to it.
Yeah it’s very distracting to me too. It looks like the enemies and blood effects have the same low FPS animation too. It reminds me of “Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse” - a very technically impressive masterpiece but honestly I didn’t like the inconsistent mix of high/low FPS animation.
Looks like the sort of thing that's irritating to look at in gameplay vids but once you're playing you're 100% going to forget about it
I bought this game when it was "released" on Steam a couple of days ago and man, it's amazing.
Finnally got a chance to play this as its on xbox gamepass! Brilliant review 😉
just played this on gamepass today. holy shit. did not disappoint me unlike my liberal son.
I heard that the developer for Eviternity was also helping to develop this game.
Nice! I love the review! Thank you very very much!
:D love the Lego quote.
Should be attached to all those "achivements" sections in shops like steam.
I cant wait to see what they come up with next for the game. I beat what is there of the campaign today and I had a blast all the way through.
I was waiting for that video..
Nice 👌🏻
This game looks fucking awesome. I love the graphics, great blend of modern visual fidelity with a classic shooter feel to it. It's like if that style of shooters got updated to current standards rather than being stuck in the 90s. A great mix between Doom Eternal and Quake.
I replayed this recently, as they had added a few new levels since launch. And damn, hats off again to these lads. So sick.
i know they are also adding in a dash later in development as well, there is a dash button assigned in the key bindings menu
Been hip to this one for a while now. Just waiting for the full release.
I wish listed this after your preview and bought it when it was released after a really bad day. I gotta say, you were right on the money with this one. Prodeus is quickly becoming one of my favorite shooters.
I'm in love with this game. 3 levels in and still can't wait for more
glad it came out recently, I had it on my wishlist since the beginning of the year
The level editor is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You had me at "public toilet icon".
Gave it a try just before my computer broke down, and I liked what I saw... didn't get very far before *the incident* happened though :( The shop says it's working now so maybe I'll be able to get back to the game soon :)
Looking forward to giving that editor a go too, building up stuff with brushes may not be as intuitive for me as some other sorts of map construction, but this game looks like a great place to start learning. A quick look at some of the tutorials shows so many neat, outside-the-box things this editor can do :D
Only question that remains to me as a musician is... well, you can probably imagine. I tend to get bored with game tools if I can only use the music tracks that came with the game. Not something people often think about but it does kind of limit how far you can push *your* ideas of what's cool to build, and still have your end product fit together organically with the game you're building it for.
I love these retro fps games. And congrats for the awesome review.
I love the tourettes guy soundbites. Keeping the legend alive.
"Bragging about your spot on a leaderboard is like bragging about how many Legos you can fit up your a$$" - hahaha classic XD Keep up the hilarious and awesome content mate!
Really like the stop motion looking weapon animations. Not really sure why, but they are really appealing looking to me.
This games aesthetic is SO fucking cool goddamn
i just started playing this.. and i'm loving it
keep up the great work GM.lives
Can’t wait to try this out on gameass.
That plasma rifle alternate fire is straight out of Resistance. There was a weapon called the Bullseye, a rifle that could fire a tracker dart that would make bullets home in. You could straight up shoot around corners with it.
