Only when you make more money than you really need, you realize money won't bring happiness to your life. For about 5 years I worked for an insurance company in London, made loads of money but I was empty. I quit my job, took a part of my savings with me and moved to the south of Chile, Im starting my own small business making less money but entirely happy, surrounded by lakes and woods. Can't stress enough how happy I'm right now.
We have been reading "Into The Wild" in my Lit of the Land class. I must admit, I don't like reading and have a hard time concentrating when I do read. However, after I read the first few chapters of the book, it began to tug on my heart strings. This is such a wonderful story. Chris, you are the true definition of "living your dream". It's sad he passed away at such a young age, but hopefully his story continues to live on. It's really touching. RIP Chris.
Well, my personal view (for any one who actually wants to know..) Is that the film is about how materialistic us human beings are... we all strive for things, power etc while thinking that these things will give us happiness... Alex showed us that Happiness comes from being with nature and sharing that sense of connection with others. We all think that we are civilized, but we can never be civilized when we keep ignoring our humanity and the important things in life. Love.
It is a very touching, beautiful song!!! very nice, makes you just want to enjoy the simple things.. enjoy life as we have it..not wanting so much than what we actually need .. Life as we know it, it's beautiful, we don't need much but to open our eyes and enjoy!

It really is a shame how everything he says is true about how society is full of greedy people who are never satisfied with what they have and oversee the meaning of life by basing their's on materialistic things that never fill their void of satisfaction..neglecting the things and people that will make the happiness last..😔

@erfegg you do realize that Chris did finish school before he took off on this fantastic journey. It' shaving an education that enables such a sojourn - and in Chris' case, and so sadly unfortunate, it still wasn't successful. Stay in school, don't quit, yet still keep your passion.
It is called capitalism, it makes you think you have to die for earn more and more money... it makes all of us think we can't be happy without it but as the top comment* says we can't be truly happy with it either, what is the solution than I ask? Yea well I realized you got to take a break and just go sometimes. People think im stupid for not starting a family buying a house and car I cant afford and just growing old. There is so much out there to expereince. I have traveled all over the US, alaska,canada and now im off to austrailia 3 weeks; no plans just winging it. I guess ill never grow up but at least when im living alone in a box I will always be in those great places in my head.
Lots of young people run and hide from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences. This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. Sad but true.
@erfegg yeah he caused more impression on peoples life in 3 years than 25 sitting infront of a desk, if you want to go travel ill go with you just tell me where cuz im in mexico :D and yeah like i say my mom i wanna drop school and she says no cuz f you leave school you wont have a job and you wont have money so i told her what would i want money that wont make me happy. i just want to live there in the bus but im afraid that if someday i get there people will get mad at me. have a happy life!
@LukeBass100 Just a thought...Alex did finish school receiving a 4yr degree. Education gives you a reference point, exposure to ideas, society structure. It gives you a starting point for critical thinking. On how the status quo came to it's present state, gives you a launching point to accept it, reject , or battle it. Education is not the enemy, it's what people fail to do with it that is the tragedy. Just a thought. Peace. I oftn wonder what Alex would have done when bck to society.
