After seeing this movie, in 2011, I looked my boyfriend in the eyes and said: "Why don't we go to India by bicycle? He answered Yes, and then we did it: from Italy, one year road trip. The picture in my account is from that travel. The best adventure in my life, thanks to this movie.

'On bended knee is no way to be free' , the first line of this song, was the life motto of dutch crimefighter Peter R de Vries, who was shot while walking in an Amsterdam street July 6 2021and died on July 15 2021. He stood up for injustice and paid for it with his life. What a hero. RIP Peter....

i agree, i burst into tears anytime i let my mind think about life like this, the saddest part truthfully is that we all still live this way, when we know in our heart that this is not our best life and we are not really free
You know, the moral of the story is that running and escaping from other people/problems/yourself/friends doesn't make you free, what makes you truly free is living your life, being yourself, sharing happiness with others, experiencing, surrounding yourself with good people ,learning, finding love, being curious,exploring...Because at the end these are the things that really matter
I think the best thing about reading comments on music videos is that the song is playing in the background while you are reading them. it makes it so much more meaningful and special
I was going through the comments and i didn't even realise im hitting up that like button on every comment.. Sometimes i really feel there are such good people hidden in the rules of society ♥ I love you
I personally agree, but i thought it was more about not going to far into oneselfs goal to be totally independant from society and how society still can be handy, even though it is not perfect at all, and that no matter where you are, you will long for something anyhow.
Yes you are right and also I think, there is no final or absolute truth in this life, loss and bitterness will be there wherever you may lead your steps. There is no perfect answer to the questions of life, nor inside us neither outside of us.
the message is just the contrary, as the protagonist says, connect with yourself first and the, if s the case, with people given that people are not the only source of joy.
My oldest brother lived by this movie. I remember he left college drove home and told us he was driving to California from West Virginia and he did just that. “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” ― Christopher McCandless
thank you Matka. I had forgotten this Chris McCandless quote. You use it correctly, and he wrote it wisely. I am 37, married. We live a life of security, monthly income and we both yearn for adventure.....My English teacher once described my energy as a caged Tiger.... he was right, my energy is still boundless and my taste for extra freedom never seems to end, yet, I have settled for a monthly income as a software programmer... It is right, but so wrong and somedays I wonder what happened to that caged tiger, maybe it died in captivity. x
@@Nautilus1972 in one sense, I agree, but dumb isn't quite the word I would use. Chris' yearning for total freedom and to be tested by life and come out on top are things we all feel from time to time. I personally admire his adventurous spirit, and his willingness to take a few risks... however... had he been better prepared for survivalist living, had he listened to good advice on his trek, he would have written his own best seller about his experiences. The movie would have been based on his own autobiography, and would not have been a loving eulogy to him, written by others. His spiritual seeking was great, but his death was senseless. The extreme risks he took were kind of poorly thought out and impetuous, in some pretty significant ways. I agree with his sister Carinne, in that I too believe that he had no death wish. He was bright, a college graduate who liked to think outside the box. Chris still had much to give and experience. He was actually ready to rejoin the world in some way, with new perspective. It was some of the foolish and obviously deadly decisions he made that doomed him. So while his story is tremendously compelling, it is also needlessly tragic.
the man who loved freedom more then anything, no matter what people would say bad about superstramp, he will forever be a legend of our hearts, Into the wild is the best book I ever read.
I don't see it like that. Chris wanted to escape the abusive world he had inherited and romanticised the idea of living in the wild without really thinking about what he really needed.
@@Laiser I must agree with you on this, he was clearly childish in his heart and mind, and cost him a life, for that kind of living you have to be prepared well, unfortunately his stubbornness led him to death.

grace matherne It's just so beautiful. You know, some of us live our lives thinking that the true happiness is in money, or clothes or material stuff, cars etc...but happiness is just everything around us.The nature, the sun, the beautiful landscapes and the beauty of new experiences, travelling... God made a perfect place for us, and we're just too bad to see it, too greedy. I love how there's a section in the movie called family, and it's not about his parents, but about the people that really care for him, that really see something special in him. This movie gave me a million ideas, and i just can't stop thinking about it
For me, this movie is the best. It teachs me not to over isolate myself in the wild and instead, stay close to my beloved one, because yes... " Happiness is onyl real when shared" It also reminds me, to stay close to narure, to my inner child, to my wilderness and never try to fit into society at a point of losing myself. Even thought I always found it crazy, messy, I can find some beauty into it. So I nourrish this comtemplative side not to get angry and bitter about this world. Everything as it's reasons to be. After years, this movie and especially the songs, with those lyrics that are so true and deep , hits me even more. It keeps showing me I'm staying on my path of freedoom and respect for life itself. To accept the process of life that can seems so uncertain when you live by following your heart. I'm leaving really soon for a long travel in South America and my soul cannot wait any longer. Alexander supertramp is hidden in every man deep inside. But we are not courageous to leave all the luxurious and live life with two hands and one head.
@@LeidenSchaft-j8r Obviously, people find great happiness in solitude. Christopher McCandless just needed to realize that it wasn't the ONLY way. My father had the great good fortune to be able to sit and talk privately for hours in the 1990s with an advanced lama whom he knew through his sister, who was a student of his. (That almost never happens - today these people are surrounded by hundreds or thousands of disciples at the least.) My father asked him about young people who die, robbed of a full life, and he said, "Whatever they learned, that was enough."
The story of Christopher McCandless is fantastic and inspiring. It is indeed a cliche to say that a story can change someone's life, but this one really can.
Hate to say it man but Chris was a modern day brat that got himself in over his head. I do respect a lot about him and wish I had his courage, but truth be told he was simply reckless with his life and would not adhere to common sense.
Common sense would mean attaining the proper survival training before venturing out like an idiot into one of the most inhospitable terrains on our planet. How would you feel, Brenda Whitson, if your loved one deemed our society unjust and corrupt and disappeared off the face of the Earth without so much as a goodbye. McCandless was selfish... I think at some point in all of our lives we've felt the need to run away from it all. People with common sense deal with their problems like normal people and stay connected to family and friends. Guy was a jerk.
I'm brainwashed am I? No, I think not, instead I possess common sense and the maturity to understand that I have obligations to loved ones. Pity that he didn't understand how much the people he affected on his journey would miss him. Therefore, he's a moron. Have you read the book? Or did you pop in the dvd and now find yourself an expert? Or do you live in a tree somewhere with no "materialistic pleasures?" Amazing considering you're online posting comments? Society has sure done a number on you... Stupid smartphone and laptop and PC. I hate it all. Maybe you should embark on your own little mission. I've read that the bus is still there.
+Desanka Mladenovic Only thing true about the story is the character Chris McCandless. The film and novel are both fictionally created by the author Jon Krakauer.
+DJC1x42 Um...no. There were painstaking amounts of fact-checking to put the story together. Though we can't be for sure, this story is based off what evidence we have of what happened.
+Drake Johnson I meant that the author had to add in some information that he didn't specifically know about McCandless. The author added information into the book which isn't confirmed that actually happened, such as when McCandless was alone.

This movie left a very big hole in my heart. I felt grateful from his wisdom yet cold from loneliness he faced and the way he decided to leave people who valued him for his greatest journey. I feel like he found the answer for him for the question why he left his society, which is bitter sweet that 'happiness is real when shared', but he couldn't have any chances to share anymore.
I concur wholeheartedly. In my 25 years there are three times I can recall having bawled my eyes out - my uncle's death (who I never really knew), the movie 'milk', and this one. interesting to think now that Sean Penn's films have this influence on me (another being the Secret Life of Walter Mitty)
He accidentally poisoned himself and starved... It is a really good book. If you read the book though you realize he had a lot of problems and he broke his family's heart. If it would have been a case of I am going to do this and come back it would been a great. The fact that he decided he went there to never come back is sad. If he just had trained himself before he made the decision to be a survival hermit I would have believed in my heart he didn't have at least a vague death wish. I am grateful his family found him though. That they had closer.
when he leaves the old guy - and the guy knows he will die - he knows it... he will never see him again. not just the best acting ever but it tears me to bits every time - oh and thank you Sean Penn and Eddie Vedder
God how much I wish I could meet someone like him in real life... Someone who lives another lifestyle, who enjoys things like hitchhiking, traveling without anything, Someone who understands this destiny inside my heart, who feels the same way. It seems like no one around me understands me. Everyone is happy with just sitting in front of a screen, living his fake social-media life, having this 9-5 job. I studied this film for English in my last year of high school. My grades had been steadily dropping since Year 10 and I had so many self esteem issues around my school work. I have ADHD and had no idea then. And then I watched this film, and somehow it all just clicked for me. Like literally just in a single moment. I put in more work that semester than I had in the rest of my years as a student and I wasn't stuck for a second. Somehow I was lucky enough to ace the end of year English exam, and now I'm doing my dream course at uni. I don't know how I would've gone if it were any other story. I'm so glad it was this incredible one.

Emile Hirsch did an excellent job, amazingly captured the spirit and emotions of Christopher Oh my god I balled my eyes out in the cinema when I saw this movie😢😢
I fell in love with a traveller like him once. He was the same type. Travelled alone for two years with the bear necessities. It broke my heart when he left me to continue his journey. A beautiful, yet short love story nonetheless.
yes. it taught to carry a compass if i ever intend to get lost in the middle of nowhere. also, in case of doing that, to bring my own nourishments (or at least try not to eat poisonous ones) and, of course, it taught me to actually do my homework on the place im going.
He didn't really need a compass because he had a map of the area with him....and they didn't positively say that he died from a poisonous plant. They said that the plant is pretty harmless to those in good health, not so much with those who are physically stressed and haven't been eating regularly. Which is why they said that it "may" have contributed to his death, not that it was the actual cause.
john smith So are you saying the entire book and movie was just some guy going into the wild unprepared? That's the gist that I'm getting. And that's exactly what you're supposed to think. The POINT was that he didn't have anything. The POINT was that he survived off the damn land. It would be purposeless if he just brought 'his own nourishments' and/or a 'compass' in case he got lost.
Rip Peter R. de Vries, please rest in peace we had to let you go way too early! My condolences to the family, country and to those who also have been affected who don't know him personally. ❤️

This song and story of Christopher leaves such a heavy feeling on me that I can't pin point. I think it's all a mix of the sad fact Christopher had to die to find out that "happiness is real when shared", the way he got in touch with nature, the dream of leaving toxic consumerist society, living the ultimate life on the road and experiencing the purest of human pleasures, my own personal urge and fear to live the same way and be totally free. Very inspiring. Tho, I believe at the end he came to the realization that he is human, and needs human contact. How lonely he must have been in the final days.
Its also sad the film did not acknowledge, fully, his past. A father that had two families, as well as the abuse. We are all animals, and as such, products of our environment. He chose a path he thought was best for him, sadly, the world had other plans. If anything , his adventure serves to remind us the importance of forgiveness, even when not deserved. And of compassion, how essential compassion is.
WolfPack LTD I agree the journey was great but once he reached his "destination" he realizes that no man is an island, or what he writes in the book "happiness is only real when shared"
6 Months later I respond, haha. Yes, indeed. "No man is an island". You a Ben Howard fan by chance? Also, my thoughts on him changed dramatically after doing a lot of research and contemplation. To me , now, he was selfish. It is easy to be dragged into the Romanticism of it all. But at the end of the day, he claimed to be about letting go of society. To me, that is simply giving up on society, when one ought to focus on contributing to it, to perhaps help, even in a small way, to improve it. He clearly had other issues other than society in general. I believe that society took the brunt of his aggravation, with more personal issues he absolutely failed to address. But then he was human, flawed. Rather than mimic his way of thinking, we ought to consider his mistakes, and learn from those. So in the end what he did was not in vein, I do not believe. Just like all of us, none are perfect. Imperfection is how our beautiful species learns. We are still learning. What we need to do is recognize that we have room for growth.
I watched this movie yesterday. It was recommended to me by someone I've known for 2 weeks. There's so much to appreciate about life. He lives so freely, he makes me feel alive in a way where he inspires me to live authentically. I'm glad I met this guy.
One of my all time favourite films. Forget material things, get yourself a rucksack, a little money and follow the road....and the adventure that it will bring, the people you will meet, relationships you may make and the experiences that you will take with you for the rest of your life..

Music always seems to wash away the superficial expectation of being the perfect person.
Yes !
The message of the movie is: Connect with people, share joy with others. Don't isolate yourself, even when society is not perfect.
Fuck that I'd love to do what he did
I personally agree, but i thought it was more about not going to far into oneselfs goal to be totally independant from society and how society still can be handy, even though it is not perfect at all, and that no matter where you are, you will long for something anyhow.
Solitude is true gift that not everybody can owe.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”

thank you Matka. It is right, but so wrong and somedays I wonder what happened to that caged tiger, maybe it died in captivity. x

Stop pretending he was some kind of sauvant. He was 3 kms from civilization - his death was dumb.
If Chris was sick of society in the early 90s, imagine if he lived nowadays.
Lol he would have nuked it 🤣 😂

God made a perfect place for us, and we're just too bad to see it, too greedy.
I love how there's a section in the movie called family, and it's not about his parents, but about the people that really care for him, that really see something special in him.
This movie gave me a million ideas, and i just can't stop thinking about it
For me, this movie is the best.
It teachs me not to over isolate myself in the wild and instead, stay close to my beloved one, because yes... " Happiness is onyl real when shared"
It also reminds me, to stay close to narure, to my inner child, to my wilderness and never try to fit into society at a point of losing myself. Even thought I always found it crazy, messy, I can find some beauty into it. So I nourrish this comtemplative side not to get angry and bitter about this world. Everything as it's reasons to be.
After years, this movie and
especially the songs, with those lyrics that are so true and deep , hits me even more. It keeps showing me I'm staying on my path of freedoom and respect for life itself. To accept the process of life that can seems so uncertain when you live by following your heart.
I'm leaving really soon for a long travel in South America and my soul cannot wait any longer.

Take care xx

“Happiness is only real when shared”- Christopher McCandless
its true but not sot really.
(That almost never happens - today these people are surrounded by hundreds or thousands of disciples at the least.)
My father asked him about young people who die, robbed of a full life, and he said, "Whatever they learned, that was enough."

@@LeidenSchaft-j8r I thought that's what you meant. That it's "true, but not really".
The story of Christopher McCandless is fantastic and inspiring. It is indeed a cliche to say that a story can change someone's life, but this one really can.
Hate to say it man but Chris was a modern day brat that got himself in over his head. I do respect a lot about him and wish I had his courage, but truth be told he was simply reckless with his life and would not adhere to common sense.
nope he was a tard
It's an amazing story. The book is great.
Rest in peace, Peter R. de Vries.

+Desanka Mladenovic Only thing true about the story is the character Chris McCandless. The film and novel are both fictionally created by the author Jon Krakauer.
+Desanka Mladenovic Still a great story though!
+Drake Johnson The book is more accurate and actually more interesting in my humble opinion. That said, I loved the movie for what it was...

Yes but he lived greatly and his spirit sores I'm sure.
That they had closer.

yes. it taught to carry a compass if i ever intend to get lost in the middle of nowhere. also, in case of doing that, to bring my own nourishments (or at least try not to eat poisonous ones) and, of course, it taught me to actually do my homework on the place im going.
you do seem like a badass.

Can I get an amen!
It really hits you and makes you question.
Lachie Kappa After months of waiting... Today I started and watched the movie at last!
Same feelings engulf me, leave me here with tears!
Hello Chris ... You hear me ?!
Couldn't have said it better myself, we all have a Chris McCandless in us, now we have to LEARN from his story and implement it. Otherwise his story and death is in vain for you. Be as courageous as Chris, but with love and forgiveness for others.
“...when shared”...it’s for this reason that God created Eve also cos God knew how terrifying ALONENESS can be and do to a human!
My dear friend is currently in a coma from a terrible accident & won't wake up 💔 This was our favourite song together.
Please send healing vibes to this beautiful soul, this world needs him still 🌎 ✨️ 🙏
May God bless your friend
❤❤❤ hoping for the best. Love
I hope he is getting better now , May god bless him
When you feel as though you can no longer live in this world as it is. BEAUTIFUL
Still searching for my courage to lead a life like he lived, leaving all the materialistic this behind and reconnect with the nature . hope I find it in days to come.
I hope you find your way to be happy soon ! Wish u the best life possible !!
@@doyon7299 thnk u a lot bud
It only looks good in the movie ig. Until you are actually fed up from your life work and family.
silence and solitude, sabbath ~ stopping to delight for a whole day! ~ simpliicity, and slowing
We shall miss you peter, you can rest now. ❤️😔
On bended knee is no way to be free🕊 rip Peter R de Vries🖤🖤🖤
The eyes with those tears. No words. Just feelings.
Even in 2020 this song is changing my life
why?
Music is not made to be relevant for one spesific year wtf. The lyrics and the instruments can be listened, felt and enjoyed anytime. Human can invent new things but not new feelings. Thats music
Eddie vedder totally crushed the soundtrack for this movie wouldn’t be nearly as good without it
On bended knee is no way to be free.
Wel uit het oog maar nooit uit het hart.❤ Wat je heb betekent voor heel veel mensen en nalaat zouden we niet vergeten.
In gedachten herdenken wij Peter.🙏💕
Thank you for your love and support. How long have you been my fan?
Every time in tears, how fragile we are. Always and ever fighting with ''the rules''.When will I let go, healty detachment
Miss ya big brother
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Hello dear, how are you doing today? I'm so sorry for your lost. It's nice meeting you here.
One of my all time favourite films. Forget material things, get yourself a rucksack, a little money and follow the road....and the adventure that it will bring, the people you will meet, relationships you may make and the experiences that you will take with you for the rest of your life..
reading these comments make me happy there are actually people out there that understand I just wish we all could meet up and create our own society or talk more deeply to bad we all probably miles away from each other I hope to meet everyone in these comments in real life
Love from India to you brother 👍
We shall make this reality. NOW.
You are wild and we are wild and dreams are wild so we are going wild and remain wild - jordan

Honest, kind, real people are a rarity these days. If you happen to have them in your life, treasure them.
Christopher had the ultimate adventure that every man and woman deserves to have
which ends with death? No ty
Everything ends in death eventually, why not enjoy the time you have
edmond hillery and tenzing norgey was too so was churchil. this is a great movie no doubt but this guy was a fucking bone head. one does not go into the alaska wilds with minimal preserves. alaska alaska alaska...yeah all the way out there
If Christopher killed himself, than he went out as a coward. My son, Christopher killed himself. Did you know him? He was USMC.
Chickiee Patriot he died from what he suspected was a potato root but ended up being a poisonous plant that kills you making you puke out all of your food. He did not want to die. If you are referring to his lack of rations I could see how it seems very unintelligent but definitely not suicidal.
