I want to address the "why didn't you warn people" critics on this video. There are several reasons why this is a completely unreasonable thing to expect me to do. First, of all, these videos are shot during winter storms when roads and bridges are icy across multiple states. Authorities and DOT crews are well aware of the conditions, in fact, you can see plows working during my videos. Furthermore, police officers have told me to stop trying to warn drivers roadside. Their vehicles with bright flashing lights are often hit by out of control cars and trucks. Do you get winter weather (ice and snow) where you live? I'm assuming then, if you are one of those who think that it is somehow effective or advisable for civilians to be waving down drivers/putting up signs on the side of a dangerously icy road, that YOU do this where you live during winter storms? If not, then why do you expect ANYONE to do it, especially TV cameramen out doing their jobs? Can you cite one example of where you've seen this civilian "roadside warning" during winter storms being performed and it being effective? Ask what law enforcement and EMS personnel think of this idea, when their big vehicles with bright flashing lights are routinely hit by out of control drivers. The "why don't you warn" idea is a knee-jerk one by people who aren't at all thinking about what they are saying. Furthermore, there are videos on my channel that show me warning drivers during bridge icing in the South - one of those rare times that it had even a remote chance of working. And even then, I could not get people to notice me unless I stepped into the road IN FRONT OF THEM, frantically waving. Police officers on the scene told me to NOT to do it. I have spent 9 years on the icyroadsafety.com site trying to educate and warn the driving public AHEAD OF TIME. It's just incredible how some think I should put my life on the line along icy roads in a futile attempt to prevent a couple of fender benders. If you think that this roadside warning is something that should be done, then I expect YOU to try doing it yourself in your neighborhood during the next winter storm - then tell me how it went for you. I would also like you to ask any police officer or first responder what they think of your actions.
Incredible footage, very educational - thanks Dan.
Well done on labeling each clip with the location. I wish all videos had that.
Besides, it's not your problem if people decide to crash as a result of "driving too fast for conditions".
In our area we have signs stating "Bridges Freeze Before Roadway" and I assume that most places that normally have slick roads to have the same signs. But maybe some areas don't (where winter weather is not problematic for drivers). Thanks for trying to educate people thru your channel!
Agree with you. A few years ago, during an ice storm in Maryland, a Good Samaritan got out of his car to direct traffic. A car couldn't stop and killed him. Good videos.
Found myself cheering for anyone who counter steered and was very light on the brakes.
FWD teaches bad habits to people, nobody can properly drive anymore.. RWD FTW!!
Ha! I didn't outright cheer, but I had a similar sense of 'team spirit' when I saw less-than-moronic tactics -- despite my log-winded rant above. ; ]
@@TRDang1 -- I haven't had a rear-wheel-drive vehicle as my own daily driver since 1991. Ha! I like small cars, with front-wheel-drive. The same over-steer and under-steer principles of physics apply, and I'm not convinced that either pulling or pushing the weight of the car in a winter slide has an advantage over the other. It's all about the 'intangible forces' of the moment combined with whatever skill and calm reaction a driver can command in a crisis. I think that 4WD and variants of All-Wheel-Drive have *_definitely_* made people complacent and too assured. I work with a guy who drives an Audi that's a few years old, and he says "I just flip on Traction Control and the car basically drives itself." This is a guy who's used to Northeast winters.
EDIT: That Audi is a 6-speed manual, too. Ha!
Omg yes! There was a jeep grand cherokee going up the bridge and im like yessssssssss! Now this is my type of driver that i enjoy being on the road with!!!
Same! It was super hard not try to correct Driver’s slamming on the brakes and steering uncontrollably just keep calm and give it some gas and you’ll pull out of some of the small swerves that you see turning into rollovers

Amazed at how many idiots drive in winter weather, rain, including white outs with NO LIGHTS ON! Then if you do spin out, put your flashers on and try and get off on the side or shoulder if able to. And just SLOW DOWN! Hats off to the people who reacted cool under pressure like I saw a number of truck drivers do . Great videos, I think watching these can actually help people to see how and what to do and NOT DO when encountering these road conditions. 27 years of driving truck, majority of that pulling doubles , has taught me a lot with just doing some of the small things, small adjustments in speed, braking, acceleration to maintain control and handle when you do lose traction. Black ice is definitely the worst ! Stay safe out there people, getting ready to see what this winter has to offer 😅

The person who lives by the Charleston,West Virginia bridge must love it. Every time it snows or rains they get some entertainment.
Right? lol id setup a permanent camera there.
+joshua canden i live about 30 minutes from Charleston, and travel through there frequently. That bridge had been under construction for years and it has always been so slick even just in rain. Yeah bridges get slick, but for some reason this particular one is insane. Although you are right, it is entertaining.
Lukas Beter yea, I lived in Charleston and if there was even a hint that it's getting below freezing, stay away from any of the bridges that go over the Kanawha, I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the river and it being in a valley, not too sure though
Bridges get slippery because the cold affect them from the top AND bottom. A normal road has the benefit of the natural heat from the ground. A bridge just get surrounded by cold air. Has nothing to do with any rivers, just the air temperature. :)
I was wondered who would stay alert to film the cars in the snowy weather. Get a Life man..

I found the car spinning out in snow compilation very scary. The moment at 5:38 was particularly intense, as the car not only spun out of control but also blew up into flames. It's a reminder of just how dangerous driving in snowy conditions can be and how important it is to take precautions and drive slower in such conditions. It's a miracle that the driver managed to get out alive of control but also blew up. It's a good reminder of the dangers of driving in snowy conditions and the importance of being cautious and prepared. It's fortunate that there were no apparent injuries from the explosion, but it's still a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the road. Stay safe out there, and make sure to take extra precautions when driving in challenging weather.

I grew up driving in ice and snow but moved to Washington DC area for a decade. Drivers from warm places all over the country and world come there and put on a master class of what not to do in a car on slippery roads. My favorites are steering into the skid but simultaneously locking the brakes, making any steering input useless. The big spin outs in these videos always have three brake lights on, and the recoveries frequently do not. Another is slipping on an icy incline and flooring it (because faster = more traction right?) then watching the car go sideways into a parked car or roadside obstacle.
And steering into the skid is only for RWD vehicles. FWD, you steer out.
Washington, DC resident and native to New England. It is the most fascinating thing to see. Glad I am not the only one who sees this in this area.
I will never understand why people don’t slow down for poor road conditions.

the problem here is excessive braking. panic leads to slamming on brakes which is NOT what you do! tap brakes and control steering.
The only thing that counteracts fear response is training. That's why pilots are always in the simulator, and cops/soldiers are always on the range. Situational awareness training should be mandatory fer drivers.
The ultimate problem is not driving to the conditions
This might sound crazy...but i have stopped a few icy slides by slapping my truck into NEUTRAL...
Most people aren't even taught how to handle icy roads, not to this degree.
When its extreme like this and you HAVE to drive, studded tires/chains, gentle handling of breaks and turning, slow speed, awareness and patients is really all that can be done.

Tips for you guys, during winter the bridge will always be cooler than ground. You can see the snow on the manhole will always melted first bc the heat from the ground. The bridge is flooding in the air, so it touches the cold air from both up and down side which makes it cooler than ground.
the 360 was perfect

I've been on it and it wasn't too bad. Slow down and don't lock your wheels, it's fine. But I am Canadian and my Dad's first driving lessons were snow storms. He considered that the best time to start learning.
As a Swede who has snow for several months a year, I can only say that over 90% of the accidents could have been avoided with studded winter tires and keeping a distance of 3 seconds.
Right on the money. It just sucks cause a lot of these areas don't usually get snow enough to warrent snow tires. I live a few hours from Charlestown in Virginia and we just had a whole interstate of cars get stranded by a snow storm a couple of days ago. Funny part is it was 70f/21c the two days before it snowed

@@MidnightMuzic They have those new All-Weather tires which are All-Season tires that are still decent enough in winter to get the winter snowpeak rating. Folks who live in places where winter is short should get those tires instead.

When i finally reached my driveway, i just sat and looked at my house for awhile not believing i made it safe and sound somehow.
people tend to forget that bridges get icy easier, like a lot easier, as seen at 0:55. The reason being that it also gets cooled from below, unlike the road, which only gets the cold air from above (sand is pretty good at keeping the heat)
You can clearly see the surface is shinier on the bridge part at the mentioned clip, as well as the truck sliding and then suddenly finding grip.
p.s.: As far as I can see there are no "Caution, slippery" signs before the bridges, which is a must here in Hungary
watching this makes me honestly feel very good about my driving
Lots of people just don’t know how to drive their cars. I drive 10mph over the speed limit regardless of what the weather or road conditions are and 99% of the time you can adjust throttle and the angle of your car to keep yourself from spinning like a mad man on the road.

It takes time and experience to get rid of the instinct of “oh crap I can’t steer this thing I need to stop the car”, only difference for me was i slid on mud not ice, I froze up and braked all the way to the end 😅 you just have to be in a crash at least once or twice before you can consciously think “ok I’m losing control, I need to ease up on everything” and then gently regain control.
A friend of mine sent me a video from Colorado of vehicles parked on a hill. Apparently it rained and then froze, and all the parked cars started just sliding down the hill with no one in them.

I was so happy he did not hit anything and then...booom the other guy.
@@faraziqbal188 he was on the brakes.. he was just on them too much because the front wheels were locked up which also means he couldn’t steer because physics.
@Anthony Nah, that's common sense stuff. We don't do that on this planet.
I can just picture this dude, sneaking around like Steve Irwin trying to get footage of idiots in their natural habitat..
*lol*
LOL. That is not a comment I expected to see... and now I can't unsee it, and can't unhear the commentary.
More like David Attenbourough:
"And now, here we see the common idiot driver, 'automobile idioticus incredibli', in its natural habitat.
"Watch, as this incredibly stupid creature hurtles along at insane speeds, totally oblivious to the changing road conditions until suddenly, without warning, it slides and crashes into road signs, barriers and even other creatures, knocking pieces of both its own and its fellow creature's carapace flying, often amid spectacular showers of sparks.
"These creatures seem incapable of rational thought since, when faced with an emergency situation, their only response is to jam on the brakes, causing their slide to worsen and removing all chance of control.
"This is an incredible sight and how these creatures have not yet gone extinct is truly one of the wonders of nature."
@@melkiorwiseman5234 You win "Comment of the Month!" LOL!
He actually probably has an apartment on the highway.
5:37 THE FIRE IS SHOOTING AT US
Hydroplaned in my Challenger RT once (first week I got it).. scariest moment of my life… rush hour traffic, cars in front and behind me but luckily when I spun out, nobody was beside me.. literally swerved from one lane to another about 4 times, before I regain control and the car snapped back into the lane we started in… turned the radio off and all.. rode home the whole way in silence.
0:48 LMAO it's like he said "Oh that must be the truck stop parking lot!"
He didn't want to work. So he seen someone else down and decided welp I'm down too, sabotage. Called his boss I got blown off the road due to slippery conditions. Did this happen to anyone else? Yes, other trucks fell off the road too.
I don't know if it's the same guy or multiple recording; but, I'm really impressed that he has enough experience to notice which cars are going to slip and zoom in.

They say drive 25 mph when its snowing, or sleeting. I'd say that's a good plan. Stay home if you can't do that.
11/15/2018--1st winter storm in NE USA, I was in RWD Volvo with Nokian All Weather tires, going 5 mph, in my lane, but got hit by a young girl in an AWD Honda who lost control--she was overtaking another car that was going too slow for her. I am going to get dedicated Winter tires--the all weather is good, but cannot compare to dedicated winter tires. If I had had the dedicated winter tires on, I would not have been there to be hit, but home already.
Used to use dedicated winter tires, but then changed to all weather--just not as good.
interstategar absolutely agreed
I wear my snow-studded tires during winter months. I notice the material on the road in town is a bit different up north here than it is in the south.
The thing I keep in mind is to be generous with other drivers and share the road. Keeping a safe distance and speed when the weather is bad.
Your probably the guy doing 25 when its flurries with 40 cars behind you....
@@HanSolo1 Better than to be that guy going 80mph who dies in a crash after losing control on ice because God forbid your trip home takes 5-7 more minutes.
i love how truck driver at 0:45 starts slipping a bit and instantly decides to drive onto grass to avoid a bigger accident
I think what actually happened is the bridge iced first so the wheels lost traction. Once the wheels transitioned to the other pavement they suddenly caught grip again and that’s what flung him off the road.
The turn right there at oak wood in Charleston has always been a bad part during the winter and even when it’s raining
