OpenMawProductions Especially the villains... These movies always had good villains but here? It was sooo disappointing! Fuck, I usually don't fall for feelings induced by nostalgia but here it was so much of a let down. Not only the baddies, everything! Even the action wasn't worth it because I didn't feel anything was truly at stake... Nope! : (
The standard of action movies are good characters you care about, good action, and a good story. Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade do this perfectly.
@@mitchellgeorge6031 action in any movie these days is also so generic. Just characters running forward while they somehow just outrun these huge explosions, aliens, bullets, floods, cars etc. Just huge generic over the top CGI spectacles that try to grab the casual audience by kind of looking cool...but being forgettable...plus the overuse of CGI kind of makes it look bad. Just look at something like the first 3 pirates of the Caribbean films made back from 2001-2007...or Titanic and so on. They've barely aged a day.
There's one thing I don't agree with, in this video, and that is that John McClane is still somewhat himself, which isn't the case. There's a scene where John runs out into on coming traffic, and gets hit. A guy gets out of his car, yelling in russian, and McClane punches him because he couldn't understand him......WTF. Anyone who understands the character John McClane would know that is completely out of character. McClane simply doesn't punch innocent people because of something stupid like that. Terrible Die Hard movie as well as a mediocre action movie at best.
Also: Bruce Willis, to me, seemed like he totally phoned this in. There is NO fucking energy in his performance. Then again, I've only seen it once...which was one time too many.
@@papigringo5692 Sadly there is an explanation for that. We all know now in 2022 that Bruce Willis has Aphasia (which messes up communication of words between the brain and the mouth). But the thing is: the aphasia for Willis STARTED in the early 2010's, and slowly but surely got worse and worse as the decade went on. And it does KIND OF show in movies like this. His early 2010's performances weren't AWFUL like his acting in those awful direct to VOD movies he was in later on, but it was pretty obvious that he wasn't the same actor he was back in the 90's and 2000's. Looper was a pretty big sign for me. Willis was decent in the movie and the movie as a whole was actually pretty good, but it was pretty noticeable how the character he played (Old version of Joe) barely had any lines. The warning signs of his Aphasia were there in movies like this one, but people didn't really think it would get that bad until later on.
Because they want to dumb people down, every movie like this they put out gains a following, one person alone knows many on average, so everyone matters. Even if one person follows it and takes influence from bad things and agendas, they will put it out. They're backed by people with enough disposable income to do so.
henkka Well, we don’t have to say that...we could just say he lived a good life after Die Hard 4. Even better reason to say the movie didn’t need to be made. Actually, understanding these Die Hard movies, couldn’t this movie have just been fixed rather than say the franchise has to die?
@WiiManElite Die Hard 4 was actually pretty good from what I've seen. Yes, there isn't much profanity and it isn't that realistic, but for one, being less foul mouthed doesn't mean it's worse, and there's actual people out there who say that if something is more foul mouthed it's worse, so I'm confused, and second, it has some realistic bits.
I don't remember die hard #1 much, but I watch Die Hard #3 last night. It was amazing. It wasn't even action heavy, but I loved the riddles and premise. Sam Jackson and Bruce Willis had a genuine, realistic banter. They're obviously great contrasts to eachother's characters too. The villain was cool. I liked the actor. Overall the film was great, even if not too action packed, yet it sounds like it still had the makings of a great film. They should take that approach for revamping Die Hard.
When I bought the Blu-ray set with all 5 movies I didn't see the last one yet, so I figured the fans were just pissed off over nothing like they usually are. Boy, was I wrong. 90 minutes and still that movie felt waaay too long.... Oy...
I'm 2 minutes in, and I already know I'm going to agree with every single word of this review. I'm a HUGE 'Die Hard' fan, ever since I managed to sneak my 13yo self into the 15 year age restricted cinema screening of the first movie back in 1988. I went to the 30 year anniversary screening dressed as John McClane, complete with bare feet - in Sweden - in December!! I also really like the 2nd, 3rd and even 4th... But the 5th one made me want to puke.
I swear, every time McClane says "I'm on fuckin vacation!"....that's just Bruce Willis bitching about having to give up his time to be in this turd, and the director put that tantrum in the movie.
If you're considering viewing this movie just to laugh at how awful it is (à la Chris's Hilariocity reviews) PLEASE DON'T! This film is so bad, it's actually painful to watch.

Agree with you word for word. I'm a die hard fan of these movies; and I loved Die Hard 4, I consider it to be a true Die Hard movie and it successfully brought the franchise into the modern age. The fact that it was directed by Underworlds Len Wisemen, meant I did have faith when Moore signed. Then I saw Written by Skip Woods in credits for this; and I thought, ...ah shit...Everything you just said, sums up this movie...
Bruh y’all act like Die Hard 5 is literally the WORST movie ever made, yeah it’s a bad movie and should’ve made a sixth die hard movie. It’s one of the most disappointing and worst blockbuster movies of all time. But it’s not the worst movie ever made, just one of the worst movies.
All these years later and I’ve still never seen this movie nor do I plan on doing so lol. Loved the first three films, don’t even remember what the fourth was called or if I even saw it all the way through.
The only main problem I had was that the running time was too short, it should have been at least 2 hours long like the previous films. Overall it’s not a bad movie, I had a great time watching this and was not bored at all. It’s just as good as the previous die hard films if not better and I actually enjoyed this more than the 4th one. If critics are saying bad things about it, what can you do about it? It’s one of them type of movies where you either love it or hate it.
Haven't watched this movie since it came out. I remember the jokes were basically, "that was badass." "Yeah, our family is badass." "Totally, we are badasses." "Badass."
But...but...it's rated 'R'! The best part of this movie was the writer thinking Chernoybl was still in Russia and it takes about two hours to drive there from Moscow.
I love the Die Hard films and I definitely agree with most of your ideas Chris. The movie itself I'll agree was poorly written and not that well acted, but Bruce Willis does his best with what he's given but it just felt like so much was edited out that made it such an incoherent mess!! I have heard that they're planning a director's cut for DVD. Hopefully it'll salvage it enough to be more enjoyable than seeing it in the theaters, but even that's pretty slim. Great work on your reviews Chris.
At first I didn't think too much that A Good Day to Die Hard, but after thinking about it, it really is a bad action movie. I think you hit the nail on the head with this review.
Ah, another thing I used to be a fan of, I watched these movies over and over again, mostly the original trilogy, and maybe the fourth two or three times... But I watched the fifth twice, because I didn't believe it the first time, and was so disappointed!
If they make die hard 6, it's going to be about john trying to get back with holly. Why is this is the plot, 4: john gets back with daughter 5: john gets back with son If getting back with holly is the plot of 6, maybe we get other diehard 1 and 2 characters like powell.
I went into this movie knowing that it was one sequel too many, though it still managed to shock me at how the only thing linking this to the Die Hard franchise is Bruce Willis as John McClane.
Many reviewers couldn’t put the plot into a sentence but I can this movie is about John and Jack protecting Yuri and to prevent the shift of power of Russia to the wrong people if they don’t succeed the world will face a 2nd Cold War.
The entire script comprised of the McClanes saying ''Shit,'' ''Fuck,'' ''Damn you John,'' ''Call me dad, and the unforgettable ''I'm on vacation!'' Wow.
Man, I agree with you 100% (embarrassingly enough, I was literally having a conversation with you through the screen.) But Seriously, What the hell!! I ditched my Valentine's date to go see this movie. So upset! Fantastic review Chris!
Thanks Chris for the review . I had so much hope for this to be good . Why did Bruce Willis do nothing when he saw that the movie was going in a bad direction ?
What's sad is, because of how horrible this one did.. there most likely not be another one any time soon, so there's no way there can be another one for it to redeem the last one.
Modern action movies don't understand tension like they used to. You get tension in more complicated, morally grey movies like Sicario, or in decent horror movies like A Quiet Place, but when was the last time a decent action flick had good tension. No "end of the world" crap, but characters that seemed real in a plausible story. Good example, the first Borne movie. That had amazing tension throughout.
Along with everything Chris said, another problem is that John McClane in this film meets the villain (or at least one of em) almost immediately. In all the others, McClane is quipping with the villains--and they're quipping back--constantly before the first confrontation. That's key to the tension. The element of him finding out various things about his eventual nemesis before actually meeting them is one of the best parts of the first four Die Hards. Those films were very cat and mouse. Oh and I don't count McClane running into William Sadler in the airport for 5 seconds in Die Hard 2 because he didn't know Sadler was the villain yet.
I couldn't agree more. I was so sad after I watched a tech screening at my theatre. There is literally no plot. The action never stops in a bad way, there is no time to breathe, and zero character development. I was going to wait for this to come out on blu ray to get a box set, but now I am just going to get 1-4 and forget that this one ever happened.
This movie is absolute garbage i love Die Hard its one of my favourite franchise the car chase is shit the action is shit doesnt have much blood unrealistic no tension and John McClane is not John McClane
I blame this movie for being the cause of Bruce Willis taking the route of Nicolas Cage, John Travolta and John Cusack: Used to be a big box office success, but now doing 20 straight to dvd and vod movies per year, and one studio film every two years.
I honestly believe Bruce lost his passion a long time ago, atleast nick cage got a shot at superhero movies like spiderverse or tee titans go to the movies
Have not seen it yet, but as you stated, the first 4 films are all fantastic. Your points seem completely relevant.. 2 issues going in...a)97 minute b) a February release meant the studio likely knew what it was putting out there and therefore had little faith in it potential... sounds like it could go the way of Indiana Jones 4.
I just watched "A Good Day to Die Hard". It's just ok. Nothing even close to the qualiity of the other 4 films. When ranking them, it'll always be in 5th place (1,4,3,2 & 5).
Going into the theatre I knew that the movie wasn't going to be good, but it still shocked me how the only thing linking this to the Die Hard franchise is Bruce Willis as John McClane.
Ah back when Chris actually cared. Seriously, watch this review and listen to the absolute passion in his voice, then go watch a review of a new movie today. Totally jaded and borderline bored lol.
Thank you, Chris, for the truth. Based on your review I will wait to see this movie till it comes out to Netflix or Redbox. Remember folks, only you can stop Hollywood from making crappy movies by not giving them your money.
I can literally say no good things about this movie. I don't think that Jai Courtney is that bad of an actor, but he is horrendous in this. Bruce Willis is on straight up 'I don't give a fuck' mode. I mean, come on!
The one thing that pissed me off the most with die hard 5 is that it felt like another Bald Bruce Willis Forgettable Red Box action movie. I’m like this is DIE HARD The greatest cinematic action movie franchise ever
This movie really sucks. The first 4 die hard films were better than this piece of trash. The only things i liked about this movie was bruce willis and jai courtney. and that small scene with mary elizabeth winstead.
Yeah, and even when there was an attempt to act, it failed because of the horrible script and dialogue written by Skip Woods. Seriously, I want to know who thought that writer paired with John Moore would make a compelling film.
Kevin Kwok Exactly what im saying! I mean damn. Thats why i hope that the 6th die hard will be as awesome as the first 4,and even go back to the realistic feel of the first 3. And i hope 6 is a sequel because the Prequel idea is really stupid.
I know what you mean. He was awesome in Jack Reacher; he had a really intimadating presence. I hope that he successfully continues to build up his career after this.
I found that part funny too. You know I bet John Moore was thinking the following about adding Lucy McClane in Die Hard 5: "Hey look everyone, it's Mary Elizabeth Winstead!" Speaking of her, Mary was great in Live Free or Die Hard. Most of her roles were good cuz she was flexible between action, horror, comedy, & suspense. But after learning what she'll be doing next, Mary sadly is going the way of Kirsten Dunst. I was hoping she would one day play as a frightening & dangerous antagonist.

+Killer-Toni It was the woman's dad wasn't it? Not the carrot eating twat.
***** I dunno, I didn't watch the movie and I won't. I just heard it somewhere
+Killer-Toni They do a massive switch and hit with the villain if I remember correctly.
The writers? I mean, they killed it.. and not in a good way..
Haven't watched this movie since it came out. I remember the jokes were basically, "that was badass." "Yeah, our family is badass." "Totally, we are badasses." "Badass."
I really enjoyed this review! I hated this film. I would personally give it an F.
But...but...it's rated 'R'!
The best part of this movie was the writer thinking Chernoybl was still in Russia and it takes about two hours to drive there from Moscow.
Beautiful
The villain in Die Hard 2 was evil, underrated. He killed 200 people in a plane crash!! "We got you"
The DH2 villains were the most dangerous and fearsome of the series!
I searched this review to validate what I felt after watching the movie today.
But I watched the fifth twice, because I didn't believe it the first time, and was so disappointed!
even for a die hard fan you sticked to your guns and gave us the truth good on you chris. You rapidly encourage me to stick to your material.
you know why you know there are bad villains in this movie? You won't remember them 5 minutes after watching the movie.
5 mins later: what were we talking about?
If they make die hard 6, it's going to be about john trying to get back with holly. Why is this is the plot,
4: john gets back with daughter
5: john gets back with son
If getting back with holly is the plot of 6, maybe we get other diehard 1 and 2 characters like powell.
Timothy Olyphant was AWESOME in "Die Hard with a Vengeance." (Not the topic of this video, I know.)
It's pretty good, though. 👍😇
He was in Live Free Or Die Hard.
Timothy Olyphant isn’t in Die Hard 3
I went into this movie knowing that it was one sequel too many, though it still managed to shock me at how the only thing linking this to the Die Hard franchise is Bruce Willis as John McClane.
Yo why is the thumbnail 2020 Chris?
I noticed the same thing. I guess he remade it for some reason?
Many reviewers couldn’t put the plot into a sentence but I can this movie is about John and Jack protecting Yuri and to prevent the shift of power of Russia to the wrong people if they don’t succeed the world will face a 2nd Cold War.
This is why I chose the 4 film set of die hard for my wish list
The entire script comprised of the McClanes saying ''Shit,'' ''Fuck,'' ''Damn you John,'' ''Call me dad, and the unforgettable ''I'm on vacation!''
Wow.
I gotta be honest, a Michael Bay-directed Die Hard movie sounds awesome, for better or worse.
Anyone notice the thumbnail change?
Watching that movies is max pain
Man, I agree with you 100% (embarrassingly enough, I was literally having a conversation with you through the screen.) But Seriously, What the hell!! I ditched my Valentine's date to go see this movie. So upset!
Fantastic review Chris!
me too I'm a proper die hard fan 1-4 and this one was totally rubbish, hated every minute of it and shouldn't of paid money to see it
Thanks Chris for the review . I had so much hope for this to be good . Why did Bruce Willis do nothing when he saw that the movie was going in a bad direction ?
Can't believe it's been 2 years since this gabbage came out.
Yep. We've had time to heal, so us big fans are gonna allow part 6.
ETrevolutionX2014
Indeed. I had almost forgotten about it... But then I found it here in Chris's old archives..
What's sad is, because of how horrible this one did.. there most likely not be another one any time soon, so there's no way there can be another one for it to redeem the last one.
Is that like a mixture of cabbage and garbage?
Modern action movies don't understand tension like they used to. You get tension in more complicated, morally grey movies like Sicario, or in decent horror movies like A Quiet Place, but when was the last time a decent action flick had good tension. No "end of the world" crap, but characters that seemed real in a plausible story.
Good example, the first Borne movie. That had amazing tension throughout.
You sounded so different back then compared to now.
I'm glad we have Chris here to just give it to us straight ..
R.I.P. Die Hard :'(
Die Hard A+
Die Hard 2 B
Die Hard With A Vengeance A-
Die Hard 4 B+
Along with everything Chris said, another problem is that John McClane in this film meets the villain (or at least one of em) almost immediately. In all the others, McClane is quipping with the villains--and they're quipping back--constantly before the first confrontation. That's key to the tension. The element of him finding out various things about his eventual nemesis before actually meeting them is one of the best parts of the first four Die Hards. Those films were very cat and mouse. Oh and I don't count McClane running into William Sadler in the airport for 5 seconds in Die Hard 2 because he didn't know Sadler was the villain yet.
D+ is way too generous
I couldn't agree more. I was so sad after I watched a tech screening at my theatre. There is literally no plot. The action never stops in a bad way, there is no time to breathe, and zero character development. I was going to wait for this to come out on blu ray to get a box set, but now I am just going to get 1-4 and forget that this one ever happened.
Huh, so you're the comment Chris was replying to!
This movie is absolute garbage i love Die Hard its one of my favourite franchise the car chase is shit the action is shit doesnt have much blood unrealistic no tension and John McClane is not John McClane
I’ve been subscribed to Chris Stuckman for 9 years now :D
what in the time paradox is going on here
I blame this movie for being the cause of Bruce Willis taking the route of Nicolas Cage, John Travolta and John Cusack: Used to be a big box office success, but now doing 20 straight to dvd and vod movies per year, and one studio film every two years.
I honestly believe Bruce lost his passion a long time ago, atleast nick cage got a shot at superhero movies like spiderverse or tee titans go to the movies
Don't apologize, die hard 5 was complete and utter shit, no exaggeration what so ever.
That's your order. I gave mine.
My order is 1, 3, 2, 4 , 5.
Going into the theatre I knew that the movie wasn't going to be good, but it still shocked me how the only thing linking this to the Die Hard franchise is Bruce Willis as John McClane.
Movie should be called "A good way to kill Die Hard"
Why no love for Part 2??????? Come on, man!
Ah back when Chris actually cared. Seriously, watch this review and listen to the absolute passion in his voice, then go watch a review of a new movie today. Totally jaded and borderline bored lol.
Agreed. He’s very stiff now...very little smiling...no movement....dead eyes
This was a very, very well-done review. I still am going to check it out and give it my own view though. I can't give up on John just yet...
I HATED this movie. I honestly found it mind numbingly boring. Then at the end they try to be the original die hard.
Jai Courtney isn't a bad actor, his agent just needs to put him in good movies that'll make him likable.

Antoine Scott Less I, Frankenstein. More Jack Reacher.
I honestly liked him in Suicide squad. Then again I liked everyone in suicide squad.
The one thing that pissed me off the most with die hard 5 is that it felt like another Bald Bruce Willis Forgettable Red Box action movie. I’m like this is DIE HARD The greatest cinematic action movie franchise ever
A definite "F".
Hey Chris. I'm your fan from Singapore! Just a little curious... Where do you get all your movie posters from?
Terminator Genisys is better than this.
I found that part funny too. You know I bet John Moore was thinking the following about adding Lucy McClane in Die Hard 5: "Hey look everyone, it's Mary Elizabeth Winstead!"
Speaking of her, Mary was great in Live Free or Die Hard. Most of her roles were good cuz she was flexible between action, horror, comedy, & suspense. But after learning what she'll be doing next, Mary sadly is going the way of Kirsten Dunst. I was hoping she would one day play as a frightening & dangerous antagonist.
