I think the moment John cries when failing to save the first plane is crucial to his character development, a very rare outward display of emotion that shows he really does care
That's what makes him such a valuable asset to cinema as he stood out from the rest of 80's action heroes! He actually cared about the innocent people that died!
But to be fair, Colonel Stuart and his men were a complete 180 degree switch from Hans Gruber and his crew! That was what made them fresh and also made them far more dangerous and raised the stakes.
That'd make a decent description of the entire series, at least when it's at its best; "Despite how unrealistic _Die Hard_ can appear, at times... It is some of the most badass action ever put to film."
Before 9/11 you were allowed to carry almost everything on an airplane... I don't know about tasers, but even baseball bats and knives up to 4 inches were no problem!
Terrorism definitely was a worry in airports, which is why they had metal detectors and x-rays. It obviously wasn't what it became after 9/11/2001. It wasn't "relaxed" but people could just take more objects on a plane, but maybe not a stun gun. Still, it works for the movie and in 1990 most people weren't aware of the things.
McClane has his gun on his holster, by his side, when he's on the plane in the first movie (granted, he's a cop and must've flashed his badge at the airport, but still...), so I just give this a pass.
You could review "Long Kiss Goodnight", directed by Renny Harlin, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson. Much better film than the reviews it got back on it's release. Funnily enough, Samuel L Jackson has said that it is his personal favorite of his own films.
@@Nitrobotti Most likely flew so under the radar because it came a year after Cutthroat Island, directed by Renny Harlin and starring Geena Davis. That film was *krhm*... Not so good (To put it mildly) 😂

This was my favorite Die Hard movie. The first one was very good, but having an Xmas action movie at a snowy airport with everyone trying to get home for the holidays is much better than at a high-rise office building in sunny LA.
90s were such a weird time. literally the majory of hollywood mainstream movies were bombastic action movies at that time. (And everyone followed the direction template that Tony Scott created, especially Michael Bay) and the other part of the circle was the booming on indie movies, that were very innovative and kickstarted so many autuer directors like Soderbergh and Tarantino
It depends. A half full gas can is more dangerous than a full can. It's oxygen mixed with the Gas that causes an explosion. Depending on how much fuel is left it may be possible but you're probably right.
Interestingly, respected critics Siskel & Ebert considered Die Hard 2 to be the best in the franchise. Roger somehow didn't like the original, while Gene ranked this first sequel as the 6th best film of 1990 above the likes of Dances with Wolves and Godfather 3. Screen Junkies even did a couple of "Honest Action" videos for the series, and it was determined that McClane's chances of survival was actually at its most plausible in DH2. It also has one of the greatest finales ever. Throughout the movie, the villains are always ahead of the protagonist. Even though McClane makes progress w/ each action scene, all of them (prior to the climax) ends w/ a trade-off of him losing: no one was left to interrogate after the baggage fight, the antenna array explodes and a plane is crashed after the skywalk shootout, Esperanza escapes after landing, and McClane ends up w/ blank ammunition in the snowmobile chase. All leading up to the plane fight where John loses against Stuart, and it seems that all hope is lost for Holly's plane. This is what Chris likes to call the "Breaking Point" moment, where the hero is at his lowest point in an action sequence and has to come up w/ a way to get out of that predicament. McClane does so after uttering his famous catchphrase and lighting the fuel trail left by the plane. With a single stroke, he finally defeats the bad guys and saves all of the hostages.
Yeah DH2 is great.....my personal favorite of the series, though I can understand why the first is considered the best. I never understood why 3, 4 or 5 would ever be ranked above the second film.
I could never understand Ebert's stance on the first two movies, but I suppose that's just a matter of taste. The one thing that makes me sad, though, is that, for all intents and purposes, this movie seems to have been retconned out of continuity by "Die Hard With a Vengeance" (McClane explains to Carmine's brother, in the beginning, that he transferred to the LAPD because of Holly, and the scene with Powell just shows that they're now co-workers; but by the third film, he's simply back at NY and fought with Holly *over the phone* - indicating that they either had a massive fight before, big enough for him to move to the other side of the country, or he never moved to LA).
It’s funny Ebert said that because Die Hard is considered by many the greatest action movie of all time. Alan Rickman probably the greatest villian of all time.
@@spiritualru2364 I'm sure he became aware of that, b/c during his positive review of DH3 on their show, he tried to claim that he liked it just as much as DH1.
The first 3 Die Hard movies are all classics. Die Hard 2 is a masterpiece. The audience never had it as good as summer 1990 - Die Hard 2, Total Recall, Dick Tracy, RoboCop 2, Gremlins 2, Another 48 Hours, Ghost, Young Guns 2, Arachnophopbia, Quick Change, Flatliners - all fucking mint.
Damn bro you just named some classics that I need to go back and watch. Thank you. And I agree all the first 3 Die Hards were classic. But of course the greatest action movie of all time is still Die Hard. Alan Rickman took the film to another level. I still say to this day he is the greatest villian ever played on the big screen
I saw this in a crowded theater when it came out and believe me, nobody left disappointed. It was a blast. Just like "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Terminator 2."
this is the kind of movie which was universally liked at the release but by the time past, it got aged badly. I remember watching this in theater, and everyone who watched it, including my friends, pretty much everybody liked it. but now they hardly remember this movie
Would love to see one with good old Thanos in Infinity War 😂 I think he would have defeated the villain in Die Hard 2 if you know what I’m talking about 😉😅
This sequel is more than decent. 90's action films are just as good as those that came out in the 80's, and definitely miles better than the stuff that's made today.
@@goldfishprime I don't get all the love for 3 to be honest. It hits RESET in such a blatant way and even though it has another Gruber as the villain, John and his relationship with Holly are completely reverted back to a worse state than even at the beginning of DH1. Renny Harlin is one of the few directors that switches between action and horror I mean from prison, nightmare 4 and deep blue sea too this one, the last goodnight and cliffhanger 6:30 pre 9/11
I LOVE Die Hard 2! It is equally as great as the original. It continues all the fun action elements of the original while upping the stakes. Also, for me this feels more like a Christmas action film, the snowy airport setting is perfect. The ending is great! I love how McClane stops the bad guys and has the best use of “Yippie Kay Yay” in the series.

@@andy00grant The first two were all we needed in my view. Vengeance is entertaining but they have to retcon so much to make it work. They have to sacrifice John and Holly's happy ending, act like most of 1 and 2 didn't happen etc
Yo Chris, this is without a doubt one of the best videos you have put out. I've been a fan for years and just re-watched this movie recently and had a lot of the same thoughts you did. It's a lot more solid film than most people give it credit for but has a bunch of flaws too and your script and editing choice for this video made me chuckle the whole way through. Felt like a rapid fire hilariocity.
I totally remember the TBS edited version! Omg this had me crying with laughter. There's another hilarious dubbing when McLane says (in that terrible voice): Make up your minds! Oh we're just up to our NECK in terrorists again John. Thanks Chris keep up the fantastic reviews!
Really surprised you didn’t mention that they Cloverfield’ed this movie. It was an entirely separate script that was quickly re-written to be a sequel after the success of the first “Die Hard” which is why it feels the way it does. The first one came out in ‘88 and the second was re-written, filmed, edited, scored, marketed, and released in under 2 years (which was a pretty quick turnaround for an un-planned sequel in those days).
I fucking love this movie. It's not as tense as the original, but it's got a brisk pace and is a lot of fun, even going as far as being a little self aware at moments with dialogue like "Another air duct, another basement. How can the same shit happen to the same guy twice?" and the exchange with Dennis Franz's character: "You're the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time!" "Story of my life." They're pretty much telling you "Yeah, we know we're doing the same thing again. Just roll with it." The TV edit is so funny and almost legendary on its own. It's so bad that you wonder if it was intentional, and it probably inspired the TV edit for Snakes On A Plane, where they had Sam Jackson read intentionally absurd PG lines to dub over the original dialogue for television. Also, knowing how things end up between John and Holly toward the end of the franchise, you kinda wish that he had just went for that drink with the cute girl at the airline counter and called it a life.
Absolutely loving these retro reviews. Certainly helping take my mind off things during this difficult time. Would love to see a a Ghostbusters 1 and 2 review. Thanks again
Everything you said I agree with, but I have to say, I always had a soft spot for this film because of Dennis Franz, my dad Is the worlds biggest NYPD Blue fan so I’ve seen a lot of Dennis Franz shows and movies, so when I’m missing my dad a lot I watch this! @@cockerpoodles1238 John and Holly's relationship deteriorating was inevitable. Unless she moved back to NYC (which she didn't) it was likely that it would stagnate and go back to how it was. That's realistic writing. The villains in Die Hard 2 were easily the weakest of the original trilogy, and before 5, they were the weakest in the entire series. You can whine about "rehashing" all you want, Jeremy Irons is infinitely more entertaining as a villain, and the idea of having to solve riddles and challenges in order to prevent bombings is a fresh idea. John McTiernan is a more gifted and talented director than Renny Harlin. The events of the first two movies are referenced several times in With a Vengeance. I think your shitty argument has been addressed.
@@cockerpoodles1238 His commitment to the badge and NYC and helping people won out over his marriage, and if you actually followed his character from the first two films, you'd see that this is a logical progression. And you completely glossed over the fact that Simon's group in With a Vengeance are a German paramilitary group. They're arguably more dangerous than the lames from 2 due to their access to much more advanced weaponry. Samuel L. Jackson is an incredible foil to Willis' McClane. We finally get to see McClane in his natural element, NYC, and that makes for a very interesting and fresh change of pace. I could go on.
Die Hard 1 had higher stakes because McClane and the antagonists were sharing the same space and Holly was always at risk. The second one the bad guys, besides a casual nameless disposable encounter, are always on top until the plane scene. Still both are a xmas tradition in my house and extremely enjoyable to this day.

To my mind, the Die Hard films are pretty much symmetrical to the Indiana Jones movies. (Which makes me super stoked for Indy 5 naturally. Lol) Die Hard 2 like Temple of Doom is noticeably darker, more bombastic and even if a bit less refined than the films immediately surrounding it is an edge of your seat, no holds barred thrill ride when it gets going. @@keefriff99 You know what I think gave that twist away? He is getting in McClane's face early on and then for some reason does a complete 180 degree switch and starts being really nice to John. It's almost as if he suddenly remembers that he's supposed to be pretending to be a good guy......
The bike thing makes perfect sense. He needs to bridge the gap fast, but also not be so loud. Running is quite noisy. The bike is much quieter and potentially even faster than running

He swore to Rome that it would never again and it would be changed.

Think you missed the mark here. The film works as an action film with tons of memorable moments. The atmosphere here is fantastic. I think Sadler is menacing. Compared to modern action DH2 is a masterpiece.
Except how does one get past the fact that the flight director could've told all the aircraft to redirect to land at other airports when they had plenty of fuel left, but instead told some to stay circling around the airport indefinitely when he knew he was going to lose communication with them because of a terrorist threat??!
Yippee Kai yay Mr Stuckmann 😂 I watched this recently and longed for the freedom that was in it. Huge cans of hairspray being allowed in the suitcase and smoking in the building and meeting your loved one just as they disembark the plane ✈️ it made me feel like so much has been taken away.
@@mike04574 Fair enough....as you will likely see below, I have been through why I think 2 is unfairly disregarded. It doesn't put John and Holly's relationship in the dumpster, it doesn't reduce him to an alcoholic, it actually acknowledges that the first film happened and that he is a hero, better christmas vibe, dangerous villains, raising of the stakes etc Now, how on earth 3 and 4 could be considered better than that is beyond me, however that's just me.
I have a generally unpopular view of the Die Hard movies. Barring the first one, the one I enjoy the most is Die Hard 4, followed by Die Hard 2, and then Die Hard 3. Die Hard 5 is obviously languishing way at the back. For me, Die Hard 3 just sort of loses momentum half way through and I'm not a huge fan of how it ends. It definitely has the second best villain of the series though. I quite like how fast moving Die Hard 2 is, and the airport setting, and that makes up for a comparatively weak villain. I love Die Hard 4. I think the idea of juxtaposing an old school analog cop with a tech oriented villain was great. Plus, I thought he and Justin Long were a pretty damn good duo and Winstead felt perfectly cast as John McClane's daughter.
Can’t wait for Die Hard With A Vengeance review. I think Samuel Jackson and Willis made a great team! It’s my favorite and can’t count how many times I’ve watched it. Jeremy Irons is an awesome villain too!
Renny Harlin actually does a good job on this film. This was a rushed production by 20th Century Fox. Harlan was pulled off of" The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" which he was shooting in order to pull this film together in a hurry. So, parts of this film are a little cheesy because they were probably made up on the fly. Harlan stages the stunt scenes quite well, and it's an action picture that's noisy and violent in all the right places. It hits all the right notes. I remember back in the day when I saw this in a theater, the trailer that was attached was the trailer for Predator 2 which had me pretty excited at the time. Oh, 20th Century Fox and silver Productions and the good old days of noisy action films.
What the hell is this dubbing? We never had dubbed for television in Greece. But, then again, we watch movies with subtitles and only kids movies are available as dubbed and as the original version. I am so happy you are doing Die Hard. It’s my favorite movie series, all four of them(cause, yeah 5 is not Die Hard). Much love, Chris. Stay safe, everyone.
Anybody else surprised that Stuck never mentioned that the actor playing the 'terrible reporter' was WALTER ****ING PECK! from Ghostbusters. He wasn't as good in Die Hard as he was in Ghostbusters, but I still like him.

IKR? Like I've seen several bad takes on how 4 is superior to the second one and while the second one doesn't have villains as good as Alan Rickman or Jeremy Irons at least John McClane is still a likable character. Four just destorys McClane's character and turns him into am asshole.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 Thing is though, the villains in DH2 are still really effective! They may not be members of the Gruber family or played by Rickman or Irons, but they were the most dangerous villains that McClane faced in the whole series and I honestly thought William Sadler and Franco Nero were pretty menacing!
@@cockerpoodles1238Well that's the thing is: On one hand what I really like about Die Hard 2 is the magnitude of the bad guy's deeds, wherever you think it's over the top or not I think the explosion of that plane really made the stakes higher when in consideration that Holly was in another plane that had the same chances to the end ill fated. Making these characters some of the most dangerous people John McClane ever confronted. But on the other hand, there really wasn't that much interaction between the terrorists and McClane which made 1 and 3 so engaging.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 That is true to be fair....though the little interaction that there was worked well I thought. My main issue with the third film, as anyone who has been following my comments on here will know, was the way the film just throws John and Holly's relationship straight in the dumpster with basically no explanation whatsoever and most of the characters in the film don't even seem to know/remember anything that took place in the first two films.
@@cockerpoodles1238 There are a couple scenes of John trying to call Holly and if the alternate ending had been used it had made a lot of sense: Simon tries to avenge the death of his brother and by doing so ends up running McClane's life, losing his job, ending his marriage and finally, destroying his morality. Guaranted, it's a bleak ending, but with the actual ending and Die Hard 4 they just screwed up anything that made Die Hard so great.
Everytime I watch DH2 it feels a bit like McClane is in the Cliffhanger movie.. or within the same atmosphere. I know, same director. A fun fact: in the end when the planes start to land succesfully, the classical music that is played in the background is "Finlandia" from a finnish composer Jean Sibelius (died 1957). Renny Harlin being a finnish director and all.
It is one of the best sequels and it doesn't undo the good work of the first one either. It doesn't put John and Holly's relationship back in the dumpster and act like Nakatomi didn't happen.
@Not Another Minute The fifth one is the only one that is just completely and utterly garbage all round. 3 and 4 are decent films in and of themselves but they never seem to belong in the same series as 1 and 2 and in order for them to work, they had to basically make him an invincible lone ranger with no family anymore....they also had to establish that basically every single threat that ever happens, no matter how great or how many people should be around to stop it, can only ever be stopped by John McClane alone!
I am just happy that despite how bad the world is right now, at least Chris is having fun reviewing all these older films these past few months that he otherwise wouldn't have had time to do. 😅

That villain introduction couldn't have been more perfect
It's so weird. 😆

The sound of Chris’ intro reminds me of the pre-virus days. It’s soothing tbh

Renny Harlin is just one of " Those" directors... Did a great job with The Long Kiss Goodnight though

@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 Thing is though, the villains in DH2 are still really effective! @@cockerpoodles1238Well that's the thing is:
On one hand what I really like about Die Hard 2 is the magnitude of the bad guy's deeds, wherever you think it's over the top or not I think the explosion of that plane really made the stakes higher when in consideration that Holly was in another plane that had the same chances to the end ill fated.
Renny Harlin being a finnish director and all.
i thought Die hard 2 was excellent sequal. One of best sequals in a movie franshise my opinion.
