    Mu is Camu Tao was a friend od Aesop's and a fellow rapper and he died of lung cancer. Aes is known for writing really cryptically which I think is one of the great things about him. This one probably wasn't the best one to start with. I'd recommend checking out something like None Shall Pass, Blood Sandwich, Daylight and Rings

      His lyrics are often extremely creative but sometimes it can also be a bit of a negative thing cause you do have to really think about the lyrics and often listen multiple to times to get to the bottom of them

      What a load of crap. They nailed it. Listen to the interview between aesop and mike eagle. He writes the way he does because he doesnt want to share his mindstate, he is ventilating. So if you think know better then these dudes do, your wrong. They actually nailed it, impressive. He is speaking from his pov and forgets half the lines he writes. If you ask him "what did you mean with this line?" he will just shrug his shoulder and say "i dunno".
      Aesop is brilliant, but we fans make it much more then it really is.

      @@Snacks079 They did not nail it, as they thought Camu commited suicide, which he in fact did NOT. Trust me, just because your 2 guys on the internet who have average hip hop knowledge doesn't get it, does not mean if you can't understand there's nothing to understand. NO. They LITERALLY weren't looking at the lyrics, or breaking them down enough. Of course they didn't completely get it. And OF COURSE there's a lot more to get they didn't even cover. Aesop never throws out pointless verses. Sure, it's esoteric, but every single word has intense meaning to HIM. Just because WE don't know, definitely does not mean Aesop doesn't know. Let's be honest, shit is CONSTANTLY flying over these 2's heads. They're not as musically inclined as they may want you to believe.

    • @Snacks079
      @Snacks079 5 років тому +3

      @@zakkofficial7045 true. I meant that they nailed the part where they went on about the fact that aesop is the kind to use metafors and that only he understands the true meaning of his words. We as fans like to break down his lyrics, and yes, he has a lot of meaning behind it. But at the end of the day it is a guessing game and aesop himself mentioned in interviews how he doesnt know himself what his lyrics mean at times, he doesnt even like to think about it. So to me, saying "you just dont get it bluhbluh" is nothing but pretentious bs.

      @zakkofficial7045 5 років тому +6

      @@Snacks079 Okay. I feel that. I better understand what you meant now. However, I do get the original commentors point, in that they may just want to steer away from Aesop's music as it IS so deep. They just aren't going to get it a lot of the times, and that's gonna be no fun for Aesop's super fans who want a deep reaction (Like me), AND people who don't know who tf Aesop even is. They ain't gonna give two shits about this super duper weirdo spiritual lyrical shit. I agree with the sentiment that we can't blame the reactors for not getting it all the way, but I also feel if that's the case, and there's gonna be a disconnect, maybe they really should just stray away from Aesop. It IS too deep.

      Nebulous is probably the worst word to describe his lyricism while probably being a fitting descriptor of his personal life. Every one of his songs has a full narrative or is an expression of his personal issues / experiences. You do have to listen more than once (or Google it) to fully understand what it may be with the exception of the handful of his "easily translatable" songs.

Aes rock is by far one of the most talented lyricists working today and I think he uses his particular style to paint beautiful pictures with words and give life to an otherwise gutteral language in fast decline. "Mu" is the late, great, Camu Tao, fellow rapper of Def Jux records and member of the Nighthawks, The Weatherman, and Smut Peddlers, All collaborative projects with other members of Def Jux. He died of cancer if my memory serves me correctly.

    lol, at least y'all admitted that this would be your kryptonite. This might be one of the weirdest Aesop songs to be introduced to. Typical Aesop isn't this low key, deliberate, and poignant. Compared to most of his tracks, he's pretty much beating the listener over the head with the meaning with this track. That doesn't mean you guys should have gotten the meaning on a first listen through by any stretch, it just means typically his tracks are way more "cryptic". To be fair his recent tunes have been much more focused on telling a clear story vs. just being a dump of thoughts and ideas.
    Aesop's writing style is indeed him writing tracks for himself, but doing it in such a way that it lets the listeners form their own stories/explanations. He's gone on record a few times saying that he has a perfect understanding of his intention with every song and they relate to a time in his life, but he doesn't want the listener to just hear a song and say "Oh ok cool this song is about when Ace had a fight with his mom." He wants the listener to decipher his words and relate to it in their own unique way.
    If your guys' aim is to listen to tracks and decipher their lyrics on the fly you might wanna stay away from Aes' older stuff, lol. Like I said his newer stuff is a lot clearer but it still leaves a lot up to your own interpretation. For example Rings off of his newest album is beautiful and still carries his deep style while telling a pretty clear and VERY relateable story. If you wanna give another crack at Aes I'd recommend Rings.
    I would NOT recommend something like Easy.

I think you should do even more of his stuff. I love the videos and I love his music, it would be great to see more. I would suggest water tower from this same album. (impossible kid) because it's my person favorite from this album. Or maybe blood sandwich because it's also really good and a bit more easy to understand and he's less focused on keeping his style and more about storytelling. I actually think if you did do another reaction to him blood sandwhich would be the best choice. I'm picking things from his newer album because it's more coherent (not the word I want to use but the only one I can think of) and the songs are typically a bit more easy to understand. anyways sorry for the long comment but I'm a big fan and so glad y'all did this.

      Once you get into his discography (which spans almost 2 decades) you can re-visit this song with a better understanding of his style and newfound appreciation for the lyrics themselves. Not sure if you heard of a cpl tracks in 09 that got some airplay via MTV/2 (Coffee and 39 Thieves)? But as was noted earlier, I, too, think this particular track may have been a bit much to be introduced to his music... but, as a heads up, it should be noted that the particular vocab here is somewhat mild in comparison to his earlier albums. I think you may enjoy his work with Rob Sonic (I'll presume you haven't heard his solo projects yet?) under their Hail Mary Mallon persona. For starters, you guys should check out Grubstake, Jonathan and Used Cars... then move onto more intricate tracks like Table Talk, Meter Feeder, and Kiln. In fact, to me, the whole last album seems like Aesop coming clean and talking about personal issues, but this one specifically seems like a low production free flow of current emotions. For those that make it this far, we the people with social anxiety and depression (everyone), must begin joyful participation in suffering and that is one Avenue of aes which makes him my biggest influence in hip hop. K rant over 🤔✌✌

    I would have recommended something like “Daylight” for a first listen.
    This song is a lot more personal than some of his other work. It’s about Aesop’s mental breakdown after Camu Tao died. He died 8 years ago, everything else in the song is basically Aesop confessing to his own mental sickness, failed personal relationships, and becoming more antisocial.
    He uses a large vocabulary, but it all makes sense. Everything is a coherent sentence he just rhymes impossibly complex words and ideas. That’s his style.

    Hey, im the same guy who keeps requesting Earl sweatshirt. I also love Aesop Rock. He is a very cryptic artist to understand...id say one of the most cryptic. In interviews he says that he doesnt think he is smart but that people dont try hard enough to understand. But unless you are exceptionally smart its almost impossible to get without multiple listens. He is well known for having "the largest vocabulary in hip hop" decided by some journalist who took artist's work and created a ranking system of how vast their vocabulary is. Aesop by far had the biggest vocabulary...not that it makes him better of an artist. But that paired with him making his own beats on all of his newer music, his incredible flow and his untouchable ability to create technical, vividly painted music. Some of my favorites are:
    Daylight
    None shall pass
    ruby 81
    zzz top
    Dorks
    I dont think song was the best for a first time listener, I think one of the above ones would be better, maybe not ruby 81 but its one of my favorites. Thanks for the reaction!

      I don't think it's necessarily a true matter of intelligence to understand his music (to some degree it is). Any writer can can cryptically write literature in a way that only he/she can understand it. I used to write poetry for a short period of time and if i were to say ''songbirds of the north indulge in gluttony'' no one would truly know what that means but me. It doesn't mean you have to be exceptionally smart to understand it. It's just not meant to be completely understood unless I define it. Don't take this the wrong way, your comment was great! We appreciate the feedback!

      Yeah I totally agree. I think it is the way that he writes the lyrics just resonate with me. I almost never understand all the lyrics at first but regardless of me understanding them...the way he presents them to me almost immediately draws me in.

    I think XXL did like a survey kinda thing and measured rappers vocabulary and Aesop Rock ranked the highest, above like tech and Eminem and they even had Shakespeare on the chart lol and he topped him. but a better video to watch would be like Zero Dark Thirty. A better introduction to him I think than actually having to know his story to follow a song and all that.

  • @inyofacekid
    @inyofacekid 7 років тому +1

    Someone may've already explained the song....but I'll explain the background.
    **LONG POST ALERT**
    Aesop Rock is talking about Camu Tao who was his label mate at the now defunct Def Jux Records. He died from lung cancer in 2008 after a two year battle.
    Aesop if just now trying to come to terms with his death. So, in the song he's describing a wide range of emotions from blaming himself to nothing could've been done while also addressing his precarious mental state through it all.
    As he said, it took him 8yrs to finally express all this. Aesop explained in an article that he tried addressing it in his Skelethon album but sorta couldn't...hence "a lot to process". So in the end he's telling himself to "get out the car" which I think he's metaphorically saying get out your head Aes and keep pushing.
    Aesop Rock's songs require a lot of attention to nuances, references, and wordplay. It is tough to decipher on first listen but keep on listening and you'll better understand his genius/poetic nature but I think you'd have a better time reacting to his song "dorks"
    Sorry so long but hope it helps.

    I absolutely love your channel. The first day I binge watched 7 hrs of your metal reactions, and have told everyone I know about you. I wondered if you’d checked out Aesop, and was insta-bummed when I saw which tune you chose. He’s a lyrical genius and this song is a diary entry with an unbeat. I know you just grabbed a rando, so let me suggest None Shall Pass, Pigs, ZZZ top or zero dark thirty! You won’t be disappointed!! Keep up the great work!

    I love the fact that you guys are honest. That's one of the best things about your channel, the fact that you are speaking the truth. I'm glad you guys reacted to some Aesop Rock, but this song is not really the best first song to react to! I've seen some other guys commenting and explaining the song, and its actually another song called ''Shrunk'' that is related to this song. The reason to why he said get out of the car was because he had an appointment with a therapist and he was kind of listening to his own words at the end of the tune! Anyways, love the fact that you are honest and hopefully you'll give Aesop another shot! Stay cool guys!

Aesop Rock is one of the best MC's to ever bless the mic (imho). if you check out a lot more of his stuff you will love him. he tells it like it is. represents himself fully in his music. and when it comes to his flow most people love not being able to figure shit out immediately. i have been listening to de la soul since 89 and still come across lyrics where i am like "woah, never even got that the first 100 times around"... keep NOT being dicks guys... :)

    Mud is his longtime friend Talmud who died young of cancer I believe.this is referenced by the line clogged up chakkraha. Aesop has mental health issues and refers to them a lot, hence head full of voices line etc. He was saying the friendship was strong and Talmud helped in these issues. The intro refers to how life seems to just stop when you lose someone suddenly and how's it difficult to accept that person and timevin your life has passed. He passed young and sick and unexpectedly, and even though 8 years had passed it still felt fresh "8 years one long blindside ".The song speaks in metaphors and hidden meanings because his main goal is not telling you "my friend died, this is how he died"but to tell you this is how it feels to lose someone close and your own age and dealing with that loss and the fact of your own mortality. The last line "get out the car Aes "is him telling himself to move on. He is an amazing writer but understanding him definitely takes a few lyric readings.

    I had to write this, so Mu aka Camu Tao was friends with artists such as Aesop Rock. They had a close friendship, so Aes is saying he was sick. Camu Tao died from a two year battle against lung cancer. He wasnt mentally sick, he was sick for real. So Aes is like venting on the fact that a lot has happened in the past years since his friend died which was back in 08. This was just to elaborate more for what you were confused about and yes he is very cryptic with his lyricism.

    Mu, refers to Camu Tau, and underground hip hop artist out of new York who was good friends with Aes. Camu, had many friends that are still relevant today including Elp of rtj fame. The song is basically detailing how the death of camu tau had a profound effect on Aesop's mental state that he wasn't able to pick up as a cause until recently. The song touches on how he feels like he's been sleeping on this connection since his friends death. AESOP ROCK often touches on stress, disconnect, and depression in his work and is open about how bad it actually effected him. I think this song is his growing up point. A point in his life where he understands where some of his problems stem from. The car metaphor just refers to you, me, Or him knowing what we all want in life, but letting it slip by simply by just waiting. And to move on, you have to perverbally get out the car and go for it
