With TOP, the metaphors have metaphors, and they're always intentional. Now, with Car Radio, someone actually stole his car radio, which is what inspired this song. However, the depth Tyler goes to with his lyricism is on another level. TOP deals a lot with internal struggle, battling your demons, mental health, and universal truths. So you're in for a treat if you take the TOP journey, and the fanbase is like no other. We'll show up and guide you through cz we love this band and watching others discover their genius.
Also, you'll find a lot of consistency or through lines in their music and vids -visual imagery, along with hard-hitting lyrics and an upbeat sound. The ski mask is a way of masking his insecurities, hiding from the world. You'll notice his hair is back at the end of the video, which is a way to express how dealing with these issues is cyclical. One of the reasons I love this song is the imagery of the fans literally being the thing that lifts him out of the silence as the beat drops. They carry him back to the stage when he isn't able to do that for himself. Music can do that for us, give us the strength to get through things.
So many good songs, not a bad one in their catalog. I would suggest Ode to Sleep for a snapshot of how this band came to be. Also def check out Migraine, Holding On to You, Guns for Hands, and Trees Live at the Fox Theater to get you started, maybe Chlorine as well. They have a whole lore backstory connecting their last 3 concept albums that's really impressive and a lot of fun. But the great thing about TOP is that you don't have to know it all to enjoy what they put out into the world. The music speaks for itself.
Looking forward to seeing more TOP if you take the dive! FPE |-/ 🤍🤍
Absolutely love this comment Nikita!!! This is exactly how I feel about tøp too!
I’ve also suggested the same tracks to James as I love watching people fall in love with their music!
With James’s Patreon subscription you get a reaction of your choice when you sign up, and then additional reactions depending on the level you chose. I’d given james a short list that incl all your suggestions plus Lane Boy and Car Radio - which he’s now uploaded. Lol! I’ll keep bugging him about the other tracks too and I’m sure he’ll get to them soon! 💛
Thank you, fren :) Connections are good for the soul. 💛💛
Ive always been a heavy metal guy, played in bands for years, but I'll always say that 21P are one of my favourite artists.
I think they really bridge the gap between different genres - 95% of the music I listen to is hiphop, but I absolutely love tøp! I caught them at a festival probs 8 or 9 years ago, just by chance and hadn’t heard of them at all! I was hooked lol!
This is the song that started me on my own Twenty One Pilots journey. This song is both literal and figurative at the same time. The lyrics, as usual, are very profound. This song speaks to me, as I spent about two hours a day commuting to and from work. My car radio saved my soul over the years. Still does. Music can do that. This band can do that! It's brilliant!
All I can say is YES to TWENTY ONE PILOTS!
Metaphors within metaphors.✌️😊🌼
Hi there! I have a habit of starting my morning with a coffee and searching for new twenty one pilots reactions. Glad you are checking them out, I hope you check out more, this song is really special to me, I saw them in concert last year and this year and this is one of my favorites live 🥰 will subscribe for more twenty one pilots
Great reaction James!!! This is a fairly early tøp track, (maybe 11 or 12 years old) and is definitely a fan favourite! I do like it, but think it works best in a live setting.
Tyler’s ability with writing, rapping, singing, producing etc has increased exponentially since his early days, writing songs in his bedroom with a basic keyboard. (He’s self taught and plays almost all of the instruments on their albums, obv other than drums, which is Josh Dun - brilliant drummer, also self taught).
I think it’s important to listen to their earlier tracks and get a ‘feel’ for the type of music, themes, writing style etc to better understand their later music that can be very ambiguous and leans heavily into a George Orwell 1984/ good v evil concept.
The meaning of this track started as a literal concept, originating when Tyler’s car was broken into at College. His car radio and CDs were stolen and he couldn’t afford to replace them - so found himself alone with his thoughts, prompting him to think about where his mind goes when there are no distractions. He dropped out of college soon after.
Mental health struggles, depression and anxiety feature heavily in their music, but not in an overly obvious way - especially in the instrumentation used. Lots of songs have upbeat, catchy melodies, while dealing with serious, sad topics.
I could ramble on all day about tøp (as you know lol!)
Regarding the ski masks, this is how Tyler explained it:
‘’It’s very interesting thing to balance this idea of being a band that has faces, that are represented by individuals on stage, but also trying to create something that is a little more faceless, that can kind of represent a group of people or have people relate to it. And we’ve always felt like the more that we kind of present this project in a way that doesn’t put our identities first, it will give people more opportunity to kinda latch onto what’s being said in some of the content… We are trying to create something that people can make their own.’’
Tøp are very ‘inclusive’, especially in a live setting. The crowd work they do is fantastic and the way they involve the fans in shows, music videos etc is great. It’s not an ‘us and them’ vibe - but a ‘we’re all in this together’ vibe. Which is why they say, at the end of every show, ‘we’re twenty one pilots and so are you’.
I think they’re awesome!
So well stated, fren! Yes, inclusive and finding your own meaning, such a beautiful endeavor. |-/ 🤍🤍
Thanks for reacting to Car Radio.
The ski masks are used for a few reasons. TOP is very much built on live shows. When they started out they played a lot of small bars and clubs where nobody knew who they were. Using masks was a way to stand out. They said if they could get the bartender to stop and look at them, they were doing it right. Also masks can be a means to deal with anxiety. With regards to ski masks, it also has a purpose of depersonalizing themselves, making themselves faceless, which allows the fans to interpret the lyrics in more personal self-reflctive manor, rather than the songs being about the artist.
I love how you just closed your eyes and listened for a bit there. I don't think I've ever seen any other reactor do that. Great stuff, man!
Not normally my type of music and never heard of this guy but gotta say - I like it. Maybe I should step out of my Smith's bubble 😂👍
Twenty one pilots can be addictive. But worth exploring 🥰
@@SherryBanditoReacts 👍

Love see more TOP from you! LOVE THEM!!!!
21P. Amazing live.
wow deep
great song and enjoyed your reaction!
Hey James✌️ never heard of this guy(but I am a dinosaur at 51😒😂) I would say a metaphorical song which could be the loss of anything rather than a literal radio. I thought that was pretty good, take it easy mate👍
I just turned 51 😉 and twenty one pilots is my favorite band (duo). This is one of their early songs and it set the stage for a really fun musical journey that doesn’t fit within any specific genre.
Typically Tyler (lead singer) writes using a lot of metaphors, but this song was inspired by someone actually stealing his car radio when he was in college. And he couldn’t afford to replace it. Tyler struggles with mental health issues so being trapped alone in silence with his thoughts was a dangerous place for him to be. The lyric “I could pull the steering wheel” is a reference to suicidal thoughts. But he has used music to battle against the depression, anxieties, and insecurities - both for himself and to help others who are also struggling.
He has/does struggle with depression; is in a constant battle with his thoughts. They have built an entire lore around this within their last 3 albums and the story will be concluded with their next album. This song was on an album (vessel, and also regional at best) which was released before the lore was created.
The car radio is both literal and metaphorical...however I would say mostly metaphorical as far as meaning goes. His "car radio" is something that enables him to be distracted from his depressed thoughts, much like an actual car radio allows most people to decompress and not worry about the daily stresses as they focus on the music or whatever they are listening to.
However, his (internal) "car radio" has been taken away (it seems)..."stolen"....and he cant fight his negative thoughts as well as he used to be able to.
Tyler often uses a car to describe/represent his body.
This is the case very early on in their self-titled album and through their latest stuff which includes the album after this one that has a video for "heavydirtysoul" using a similar metaphor.
Clearest line to support all of this is when he says "I could pull the steering wheel"...basically stating he could just end it all (crash the car), so that he wouldnt have to "drive" with only his negative thoughts on his mind and no end in sight.
