Hi Chris, Microsoft Technet is a useful resource for info about this topic. Search for the article, 'Best Practices for Internal Domain and Network Names'. This should help.
Thanks a lot! This is exactly what I was thinking about right now during the installation a server for client. I have very bad experience from our AD where I used couple years ago our registered public domain name and now it doesn't resolve the company website from the LAN in the office etc...
Hi, it's effectively created when you create the first domain, (the forest root domain). The forest is the overall container for the active directory instance. Microsoft offer the suggestion to use a suffix of the organisation's public registered domain name. In my case I might use 'training.ittaster.com'. The important gotcha to be aware of is using the old style internal domain names such as '.local' '.internal' types. In my view the older type '.local' domains are ok for home test labs. But I would avoid for production networks, due to issues with certificates etc.
Finally someone that speaks slow and clear, and knows what they are talking about.
Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Now I know and can confidently proceed. Much thanks mate.

Perfect introduction to New Forest naming with best practices. Great work!
I did not know that domain naming was actually rather important. Thanks.
Great explanation! Is there any chance you could add close captioning to the video for those who are impaired?
I'd love to understand more about the recommendation not to use a single domain namespace. Where can I read more about this subject?

Is there a significance to the forest name? Or any gotchas like with the domain name and public/internal

Whats the best way to document it?
A suggestion might be to consider something like an AD structure diagram.
