Thank you so much. I’m setting up a lab at home and I needed to create and configure a server to practice pushing out policies and this was the perfect tutorial. Great work, thank you!
I changed the local server IP from DHCP to static and it failed reconnecting. I have 2016 windows server on AwS instance. Can i assign any 192.XX ip address?
It's been a while since I've released any Windows Server videos. So I thought now would be a good time to publish a new Active Directory tutorial video covering Windows Server 2016. I'm interested to hear your feedback and any questions you may have about Windows Server 2016 ADDS installation & configuration. Hope you find the video helpful. Best wishes Jon
Really appreciate your teaching speed and clarity, but we will appreciate if you can zoom in for us to see more clearly because to you it is clear, but blurred before your audience. Thank you
I'm having difficulty getting a reasonable comparison between Azure's AD and the Server ADDS. I'd love to see a video with a compare and contrast. Especially if Azure could replace the server ADDS for small business.
Hey, when I tried to configure the network settings for the active directory it's coming out as an unidentified network and no internet connection. I am running server 2016 in a virtual machine. i couldn't change the ip to static
Hi, it's a good idea to set up your IP addressing scheme before installing ADDS to avoid issues down the line. Internet connectivity is going to depend on your IP addressing scheme too, I have some videos on the channel that may help with IP addressing you may want to take a look at. Also if you are using a hypervisor, check your VM is connected to the correct network. Hope this helps Jon
You need to specify a AD-Sub-Child Domain Name, in the AD-Root, because...., You create a AD-Child Domain in a already Top-level available AD-Forest. So, what you do, is redefine a (Child) Forest, under the Top-Level-Domain.
Thanks for the video, it is very helpful! I especially like how you discuss in some detail the different settings, rather than just say tic this, select that without context. I have a couple questions, if you don't mind: When you create a 2nd DC, would you recommend changing any of the settings? How much more difficult is it to setup a Core/Headless server instead of the Desktop Experience?
Hi, thanks for the great comments and feedback! To add a second DC to a domain, the process is very similar, except during the deployment configuration, choose 'add a domain controller to an existing domain'. Installing a server core server is very easy and a little quicker, the difference is how you manage the server, this involves remote management tools and Powershell . Take a look at my video 'Server Core Configuration & Management - Windows 2012R2'. Hope this helps Jon
Very helpful, great that you explain everything step by step. Can you create a new tutorial how to build own CA for lab purpose ? There is a lot of tutorial, but yours looking a lot better. Thanks.
I noticed on your screen the high part over each of the three blocks is green. Only 1 of mine is, at this point. There is a number by the services line. It seems that a bunch of services did not start. Is this a problem? If so is there an easy fix?
Hi, clicking events within the red tile will give an indication of the issue. Some services are configured to start (delayed start up) and will clear after a server manager refresh a minute or two later. This is fairly typical, particularly when powering up test servers in a learning lab and logging on to the server. The 'Downloaded Maps Manager' service which is related to telemetry, can cause a red tile too, some people disable it, if it is something not needed within their environment. But generally it's not a good idea to disable services, without fully understanding what they do and impact disabling a service will have. Hope this helps Jon
After approximately 2-4 mins delayed services should start, if you click the refresh button the tiles should go green. You can also click to start the services too. The downloaded maps manager is tends to cause a permanent red tile, and this is the reason some people consider disabling it (subject to their environment/requirements).
@@ittaster So your saying on a clean install to an actual PC. No virtual stuff involved. That all the services should start. I noticed there were a few that required manual starting. I guess the question is are these services not necessary and can be ignored?
@@ittaster I noticed that after awhile there are only 3 left not started. One is the downloaded maps manager thing you mentioned. How does one disable it?
While installing the AD domain services I get an error stating : The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed. Installation of one or more roles, role services or features failed. The reference assembly could not be found. Error:0x80073701... Can Any one help fix this?
Install 2 DC's incase of power outage... Well if you are in a small company, and there is a power outage, everything is usually affected, so what is the point on having 2 controllers, when every PC, router or switch is without power?
Hi, it's recommended and good practice to have more than one Domain Controller, because should a domain controller fail and go offiline (server hardware component failure) not so much power outage. The remaining domain controller is able to service logins etc. In smaller network environments this is not always cost effective though, and therefore it is a decision for the organisation as to what level of resilience to put in place vs cost. Disaster recovery and resilience vs cost is an interesting topic that effects large and small organisations alike. many thanks for your question Jon
I tried to install the active directory following your instructions, but I got confused on prerequisites check. It says "one or more prerequisites failed" :( How do I solve this? And how to validate prerequisites before installing AD DS? Hope to get a reply soon. Thanks
During the install of AD DS if there is a problem with prerequisites check the wizard will show which check has failed. I would always check the basics, network connectivity, IP address assignment etc. and restart before installing AD DS role.
Hi, provided your PC is of suitable spec. Virtual box will enable you to set up a test lab to install and configure Windows Server. Windows Server 2019 is the latest version, I have a video covering that too. Hope this helps Jon
You forgot one of the most forgotten handling: Adding a Reverse Lookup Zone, with a A-Host Pointer Record and a LDAP / Kerberos Service Record, and a CNAME Record. Otherwise, your domain controller will not find itself, and its LDAP / Kerberos / Web IIS Services, in its own domain.
Hi, the tutorial is aimed at covering the installation and configuration of ADDS in line with Microsoft and Exam ref 70-742. I agree it's a good idea to configure a reverse lookup zone/s, however it's not required for most AD functionality and host to IP address resolution. Reverse lookup zones sit between DNS and DHCP (subject to IP addressing scheme) and something I think would deserve a dedicated video to avoid the video going off topic. Many thanks for your comments and good points made.

why do I need to specify a subdomain in a root domain name when adding a new forest?
Hi, internal domain names need careful consideration. I talk about this in more detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gWJ99vN7Q60/v-deo.html
