  • Flight D86241/IBK6241 Reykjavik to Madrid diverts to Birmingham with wheel and possibly hydraulic problems, on 16 June 2018.
    Update: according to The Aviation Herald avherald.com/h?article=4b9f779... the flight diverted due to hydraulic failure
    The BHX emergency services deal with the incident in their usual fast and efficient manner.
    I was alerted to the arrival of the Boeing 737 by the knowledgeable young son, Oliver, and lovely wife Gemma of Paul Evans, just as I was setting my kit up. Thanks to you to both!

    If you look closely upon the nose footage, the tyre looks like it has already exploded. Which is possibly the reason for the hydraulic loss, since the hydraulic reservoir A is located within the belly of the aircraft where the tyre retracts into the belly. So, the tyre exploded within the belly of the aircraft causing damage to hydraulic reservoir A and a rapid drop in hydraulic pressure. Also, hydraulic system A is responsible for ground spoiler, which failed to deploy upon landing.

      No spoilers is standard operating procedure when landing with a gear fault - keeps the weight off the wheels for longer.

    S.O.P. With a gear fault is = flaps 40, VREF 40, fuel pumps off, autobrake off, no spoilers on touchdown and full opposite aileron; the two spoilers raised on the right wing are part of the roll control system.The tire most likely blew on takeoff - hydraulics most likely just fine. All by the book. That's why they get the big money.

    • @PilotUTA
      @PilotUTA 6 років тому +9

      There is definitely a hydraulic problem. If hydraulics were fine and full right aileron was applied, there would be 4 spoilers raised on the right wing. Each wing has 4 flit spoilers that help with roll.

    Lots of the hydraulics in the 737 are located in the gear bays. So let me guess: It took off, burst a tire and when the burst tire got inside the wheel bays it damaged the hydraulics, gave an alert to the flight deck almost immediately after departing and it either diverted or returned. That meant the spoilers weren’t all deployed. Not a great design, but the pilots handled it well. Great catch!

    Crosswind landing. Cross wind blowing from the right of the runway. On final approach the aircraft is flown with a "crab" angle which means the airplane is flying with the nose pointed about ten degrees (depending on strength of the crosswind) to the right. Essentially its flying a little bit side ways to stay on the final approach. On short final, just before touch down, the left rudder is applied to align the aircraft with the runway. AT THE SAME TIME the right wing is dipped into the wind and these inputs are held (it's called cross-controlled flight). The right main landing gear will touch down first, followed by the left main gear.

    • @kapteklanning

      There is no full deflection in the aileron and both single ground spoiler and flight spoiler deployed on one wing. Definitely a loss in hydraulic pressure in one of the systems (likely A which provides hydraulic pressure to the ground spoilers). Also there was a reported leak from the left gear which is where the hydraulic reservoir A is located.

      E Gino then just move the fuel to the right tank but not too much

    • @farishamdy
      @farishamdy 5 років тому +3

      Pushing the yoke to the right, using right aileron also makes use of the spoilers on that side, they didn't arm the speed brakes as they would deploy on both sides, putting more pressure on the already damaged tire. Putting fuel into the right tank would make the aircraft unstable during the approach, the technique the pilots used meant that firm handling was only required once on the ground.

    • @alasdairmurray2131
      @alasdairmurray2131 6 років тому +7

      tigersfan14 that isn't how the system works.. we can't turn it off. That would indicate issues with a hydraulic system.

    • @farishamdy
      @farishamdy 5 років тому

      Yoke pushed further to the right makes use of the spoilers on that side as well as the aileron. It appears they avoided arming speed brakes before landing to prevent excessive pressure on the damaged tire upon touchdown as it deploys on both sides.

    After reading all the intelligent comments below (as well as the couple of moronic ones), if this damage occurred at, or during, take-off -- and I believe all the evidence suggests that it did -- then I assume the crew must have become immediately aware of it... so can somebody please explain why this injured bird made an emergency landing at BHX? Iceland to Brum is quite a distance to fly in a damaged plane. Plus, would it not make sense to land at an airport with more than one runway? Because I'm assuming Birmingham remained closed for some time after this impromptu arrival. Prestwick, Edinburgh, Manchester or Heathrow spring to mind. Or why not just return to Keflavik? Thanks in advance.

    • @tgm9991
      @tgm9991 6 років тому

      YelpBullhorn the pilot in command takes many factors in consideration while deciding where to divert to, like runway length, the wind conditions, the weight of the aircraft, weather they can handle the aircraft type, even sometimes how familiar the pilots are with the airport may be factored in but the number of runways the airfield has isn't anywhere near the top of that list and it was likely to heavy with fuel to return to where it came from. Even if he did divert to somewhere with more runways it's likely the airport authority would close the whole airport anyway for a while because of the lack of fire coverage.

    • @YelpBullhorn
      @YelpBullhorn 6 років тому

      Tim Morgan... Thanks for replying. I get all that, but imagine if this landing had ended catastrophically the airport could well have been closed for weeks while the runway was repaired and investigations carried out. That's why I think an airport with more than runway would be a more suitable choice for such events.

    • @tgm9991
      @tgm9991 6 років тому

      YelpBullhorn In an emergency to the captain that quite righty doesn't matter his priority is the passengers and crew on board and that means selecting the runway at whatever airport he is happiest to land on to hell with any possible disruption that may happen to the schedule.

    • @YelpBullhorn
      @YelpBullhorn 6 років тому

      Tim Morgan.... absolutely. I understand all what you are saying, and I promise I'm not trying to antagonise you, or disrespect the crew of this stricken 737, who committed themselves admirably. Hats off to them. I just don't understand why it landed in Birmingham, that's all!
      After all, it takes off in Iceland, blows a tyre and receives damage to one of its hydraulic systems. Not good. And instantly the crew must have received information from various sensors warning them of the damage to both the tyre and the hydraulic system. So what do they do? I'm trying to imagine the immediate conversation between the flight crew. And all that springs to mind is comical madness. Forgive me if I'm being flippant:
      " Right, captain, what's our plan of action?" asks the first officer. "Declare an emergency, enter a hold to burn some fuel, and then request vectors for a return into Keflavik?"
      The captain ponders their predicament for a brief moment. Slowly he massages his chin with his finger and thumb. "No no no," he eventually replies. "Let's go to Birmingham instead."
      "BIRMINGHAM??? What Birmingham England?" asks the first officer, somewhat taken aback.
      "Yes, of course Birmingham bloody England! I don't mean Birmingham, Alabama, man."
      "Sir."
      "Birmingham England is only about a thousand miles away, most of which is over unforgiving open ocean and rugged mountain tops granted, but It'll be okay."
      "Yes, Sir. Birmingham it is.... Birmingham here we come..."
      "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. I have a slight problem to report. Unfortunately on take off we managed to blow a tyre... which, it would appear, has also damaged one of the plane's hydraulic systems. But don't worry, there's nothing to worry about, everything will be fine. But unfortunately it does mean we will be making an unscheduled landing in... Birmingham."
      "Fuckin' Birmingham?!?" the passengers shriek in muffled unison.
      Forgive me for getting somewhat carried away, but I just cannot get my head around that decision, that's all. Or am I missing something? Or perhaps I'm the only one who isn't missing something....

      I imagine that the hydraulic failure indication manifested itself sometime later in the flight, and prudence dictated that the pilot land where he did.
      It goes against logic for a pilot to leave someplace he knows (Reykjavik), do something dangerous (fly over the North Atlantic with passengers on a broken airplane), just to land someplace else - especially not because he was worried about closing the airfield.
      If the plane was too heavy, but safe to fly, then the pilots would just fly around until fuel-burn brought them down to max safe landing weight. If the plane was too broken to fly, then the pilots would land - max weights be damned, period - because lives would be at risk, and with that type of risk comes lawsuits.
      Take-offs are optional, but landings are mandatory.

    asymmetric spoiler deploy, sure, Spoiler Roll Aug would do this, however, there is no aileron deflection? SOP says no auto spoiler deploy on tire burst for safety of the remaining one tire, and to use Aileron input to induce Spoiler Roll Augmentation...... but why is there no aileron deflection the whole time he is on the roll out?
    im wondering if the tire shredding popped a hydraulic line in the wheel bay ?

      закрылки снизу и сзади крыла. а это спойлеры. совершенно другая вещь. в данном случае использовались не как обычно, для торможения (упрощенно) - т.к. тогда бы было симметричное их поднятие.
      при повороте штурвала эти спойлеры "помогают" элеронам - поднимаются на том крыле, которое надо опустить.
      касание не на обе ноги одновременно - абсолютно стандартная техника посадки с боковым ветром - в данном случае прикрывались от бокового ветра справа, креном вправо, соответственно. поэтому правая опора и коснулась первой.
      на пробеге, видать, ветер задувал не хуже. поэтому штурвал был повернут вправо, и спойлеры справа торчали.

    SOP would be to set the flaps on the damaged side at 30, flaps on the other side at 10, hard left rudder on the flare, reverse thrust on the damaged side only, fuel dump while travelling down the runway, throttle up at the end of the runway, continue into the trees and hit the emergency slides.

    Not sure why most of you here are praising the pilot. The landing was rough due primarily to the experience of the pilot even if there was turbulence or wind. If it is not safe to land, you don't. If you choose to, then, you must minimize the landing impact on the tire. This here was a crash landing. Good that airplane tires are made to resist explosion or it would've exploded upon impact.

    • @zanw.awesome3102
      @zanw.awesome3102 2 роки тому +12

      the left tyre burst when they took off, so when it was time to land, he landed on the right tyre alone and not put the bulk of the impact on the already bursted left tyre. Afterwards he deployed the spoilers on the right wing only as to not add more downward force on the left bursted tyre. Thats why the pilot was amazing.
