    Hi Tweedy. Thank you for yet another fascinating architectural and historical tour of London pubs, in an area which sadly appears devoid of cask ale. A throw back to the 1970’s and the reason why CAMRA was formed. Thank heaven you were at least able to “enjoy” a keg stout. I hope next time you find some restorative cask beers.
    The pubs you featured were all very interesting, with much to commend them. I wonder where you will pop up next time. 🤔

    22:09 A phosphate soda is a tangy or tart fountain drink. Phosphates get their tartness from phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid is added to carbonated water and fruit syrup to make a phosphate. Cherry, lemon and orange were popular flavors. A syrup called “green river” also was common. This was lime flavored. There were also chocolate phosphates. Phosphates were made to order rather than sold in bottles.

      Thanks for that background! I remember now that I've seen phosphoric acid in the ingredients list for Coca Cola. It's interesting that nowadays that's something the manufacturers don't seem to want to draw attention to, but in that late Victorian / Edwardian period it was considered a selling point!

Spent a lot of time in Camden over the years, played with my band in the Dublin Castle late 80's early 90's met Phil Daniels in there, bought me a pint, (lovely chap) he was out to watch a band called "Jo Jo Namoza" on the same bill. My father-in law was an area manager for HH. Greene King took over Hardy's & Hansons (based in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire) in 2006 and closed the brewery, only wanting the pubs. I've never been in a Greene King pub since.

    The imminency of Halloween had passed me by until I saw the heavy metal pub. Thank goodness I live in the country and only go out to film videos every now and then.
    Excellent historical reporting on these pubs as usual and I was really fascinated to see the first pub in the open countryside on that fabulous map. Great story telling segment there too!
    The Dublin Castle font and colour scheme put me in mind of Ind Coupe. Do they still exist? Growing up in Kent in the 1970s they seemed dominant. At least in my memory they do. Similarly, I liked seeing that "Take Courage" sign still in situ at The Elephant's Head. I was screaming "church fittings" at my device and then you talked about them.
    I quite liked the look of that inter-war conservatory at The Old Eagle and the cat there was a typical pub moggy - not bothered and cool.
    Naturally I associate Camden with Madness and it was good to see that it's not swamped with glass and steel.
    These videos are providing such an important record for future generations. Assuming they stay available, I can well imagine someone recording videos in 100 years time in which they retrace your footsteps. It really is amazing work you're doing.

      @@WC21UKProductionsLtd Thank you! I actually pondered making this a "Halloween special", part of the reason for choosing Camden what with the Mother Redcap story... But thankfully I came to my senses and stuck to talking about the pubs!
      I recorded the "storytime with Tweedy" segment about Mother Redcap twice! Then realised I didn't have much in the way of visuals (the audio was recorded at home on my sofa) and had to resort to some AI "art". I've found if you prompt it to make a watercolour painting then the slightly terrifying distorted faces and extra limbs / fingers are less noticeable. However I thought the image of Lord Rochester dressed as the devil ought to be more dignified so I asked for an oil painting. I do find making those silly animations quite fun.
      Ind Coope doesn't really exist any more, swallowed up by multiple acquisitions.

    Hi John, food for thought maybe but definitely not ale for thought!! A bit of a real ale desert but what stories you unearthed and a touch of modern history too.
    The maps you showed us were excellent especially the coloured one showing the bomb damage.
    By coincidence UA-cam fed me a Madness video just before I saw yours, Baggy Trousers! I grew up as a teenager with the Ska revival and the music always brings back memories. Great to see the Madness plaque on the pub.

    Thank you, Tweedy. Fascinating, as always. Your video reinforces my inclination to avoid Camden whenever I can, but your personality and sense of history make all your videos hugely enjoyable. I've been wanting to ask you why you aren't more full-throated in endorsing Samuel Smith pubs. I've yet to go to a Samuel Smith pub that I haven't liked, and, in fact, my wife and I look for them deliberately. I understand that some people don't like how they enforce an old-fashioned and sociable atmosphere, but I certainly agree that a pub is much better without smart phones, music, and--at least excessive--cursing. Most important, they do a great job in restoring and maintaining the historical character of their pubs. I realize they may not have the most interesting beers, but I actually like several of the Sam Smith's stouts a lot and the price is certainly right.

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  Місяць тому +3

      Thank you!
      I do like Sam Smith's pubs, particularly the ones where it's more of a restoration rather than a recreation. Some of that latter group can feel a tiny bit artificial to me, but the former group are some of my favourite pubs in London.
      My ideal London pub crawl is around the Holborn area, and would have to include the Cittie of Yorke, plus quite possibly the Princess Louise. Ye Old Cheshire Cheese is also somewhere I hold very dear, despite being firmly on the tourist trail. To me those three are all beautiful, magical pubs, and I unreservedly take my hat off to Sam Smith's for how they've preserved them.
      I love that they don't have any piped music, and I suppose that's one thing I should emphasise more in the videos, because I often don't use any of the audio when I record footage of the pub interiors, so it's not always obvious what it sounds like inside. They're also usually quite restrained in terms of things like gaudy fake chalkboards which seem to blight the walls of a lot of other pub chains.
      As you say though I do wish the beer (and particularly real ale) offering was a bit more varied. In London Sam Smith's pubs there will be at best one hand pump (Old Brewery Bitter) and although that is commendably drawn from wooden casks when it is on the hand pumps, in many London Sam Smith's pubs all they have is the keg version. It's a shame because I think Sam Smith's actually make some nice beers - I like their Dark Mild (a rare treat here in London) and their Extra Stout is also good. I recently discovered their (bottled) Chocolate Stout, which I'm sure some beer purists would turn their nose up at, being a "flavoured" beer, but I thought it was delicious... I just wish they'd serve more of them from cask - a pint of "real" mild from a hand pump in a beautiful location like the Cittie of Yorke would be unbeatable!
      Having written this I now feel like a "Five Best Sam Smith's pubs in London" could be in the making!

    • @benjaminschwarz1
      @benjaminschwarz1 Місяць тому

      @@TweedyPubs I would love a "Five Best Sam Smith's in London"--the Cittie of York and Princess Louise are on our regular rounds. (To make a pub tour in this area even more perfect, I would extend the crawl slightly north to The Duke on Rogers Street, even though it's not a Sam Smith.) Other Sam Smith's we love are the George and Vulture in the City, the Angel in Rotherhithe, and the Champion and the Fitzrovia Tavern. (What do you think of another of our favorite's in Fitzrovia--but not a Sam Smith's--the Newman Arms?) I didn't know Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese was a Sam Smith! I've long been looking for an opportunity to sit in the old bar room immediately to the right of the entrance there but haven't managed to time it right. As for the beers, I've not yet tried the Chocolate Stout but find the bottled Imperial Stout fairly irresistible.

    Thanks for the video Tweedy. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tapping the Admiral (a little further north-west of the Old Eagle). I'm not sure of it's historic provenance but it does have a really good selection of cask ale, and the home cooked food is very reasonably priced for London. If that isn't enough, they also have a pub cat, Nelson, that is usually in the window by the bar as you come in. If you live nearby, I'd recommend you give it a visit.

    • @TweedyPubs
      @TweedyPubs  Місяць тому +2

      Agreed - there's only one or two pubs on this list I would consider going back to again!
      Yes the Golden Lion is in a precarious state, it isn't a listed building, and it's fortunate it has survived both the blitz and whatever this current wave of development in the immediate vicinity is. It is at least on CAMRA's list of historic pub interiors, and although that doesn't carry any legal weight in the way a listing from Historic England would, I think there are precedents where planning committees have referred to what CAMRA have said about a pub when making decisions. However CAMRA's notes are mainly focused on the interior, so there probably isn't much documentation for things like the signs outside.
      Part of the motivation for making these videos is to document what these pubs look like today, in the hope that might in some way be useful as a reference and help to preserve them.

Unlike some of the other pubs in this video this one really didn't feel like a tourist destination to me, it's a bit out of the way from the centre of Camden Town, and I get the sense most of its customers are people who live locally.
