Thank you! Maybe I should have engaged with the staff at the Adam and Eve a bit more to try and understand the reason behind this apparent rule, but the member of staff who spoke to me was quite huffy about the whole thing, and I didn't really get the sense she wanted to have a meaningful discussion about it. If the company wants to control its "brand image" online then they've probably achieved the opposite of the most desirable outcome here. I generally try and look to the positive about every pub I feature. Oh well, like you say - it's their loss!

I've had this area at the back of my mind for a while now but I was waiting for the Pineapple to re-open as I was keen to see what it was like now. Needless to say I'm not really keen on the current interior but I did enjoy researching the history.

Thanks Russell! Yes I do think the Windsor Castle is a gem - obviously it would look a bit nicer without the scaffolding! I hope you got a sense from the video of how wonderfully quiet it was in there. No music, just the sound of quiet conversation and perhaps the occasional clink of glasses. It's in a back street so is often a bit quiet when other pubs in that area are busy.

Shamed to admit that I have only darkened the doors of the Buckingham Arms pub from today’s list. And yes, the wife and I were lucky enough to snag one of the bay tables on our visit. As for drink choices, I’ve always been partial to a pint of Spitfire, when in good form. Sorry about the Adam & Eve…a missed opportunity on their part. Thanks Ed! I think you made a good choice there, the Buckingham Arms does have some nice interior features and I think they might actually be the most original of this list. Yes, perhaps I've been a bit unfair on Spitfire in the past! Mostly when going to Shepherd Neame pubs I'd tend to opt for Master Brew because I usually like the lower ABV beers... but actually I think Spitfire has a bit more flavour to it.
I've always remembered half pints being served, often for Shandy. But in the old days, when the old boys were around, they would often order a "half n half". That was half an IPA in a pint glass with a bottle of stout that they mixed in.
I'm fascinated by these "beer cocktails" for want of a better word. The landlord at the Royal Oak in Borough a few years back told me he still has older customers who ask for various different combinations of their beers. They even had nicknames - if I recall correctly a half of old (ale) and a half of bitter was called a "mother in law".
@@TweedyPubs What used to be popular, not sure if it still is, in Youngs pubs like The Buckingham was a 'Ram and Special' , which was half a pint of Youngs Special Bitter in a pint glass and a bottle of Youngs Ramrod, which was basically a strong ale, then you'd mix the two.
I also worked in the Victoria area, about twenty-five or so years ago, and those pubs were all frequently visited. The Cask and Glass might have been my favourite, simply because it is quite a unique little pub. Like you said about The Colonies (The Pineapple), it didn't have the greatest interior but what character it did have was ripped out in a refurbishment some years ago. It was popular in the summer because you could drink in the yard at the back. I quite liked The Buckingham, but again not mad on the refurbishment. I often wondered about that narrow side bar, thanks for clearing that up. The Adam and Eve was problably the least favourite on that circuit with me and my fellow drinkers back then. I quite liked The Cardinal/ Windsor Castle, although some people found it too dark and gloomy, one of the main reasons I liked it. Other pubs round there include the Albert on Victoria Street, which is something of a tourist pub, the Feathers on Broadway (I think its Broadway) and a pub that I think changed name relatively frequently on Strutton Ground, at one time a sort of fake Irish pub.
Thanks Liam! I must have visited more than two hundred pubs since I've been doing this channel, and I can only think of two occasions when staff behind the bar recognised me from the channel. Maybe that's a good thing..? I think most people in the trade have no idea about the channel, and maybe even if they had heard of it they wouldn't think it very interesting or relevant.
@@TweedyPubs I imagine she was little more than a cheap 'jobsworth' recently promoted to 'temporary bar supervisor' or similar. You always present pubs in a really good light and I am sure that her employers would like nothing better than free exposure on a channel with such a considerable following.
@@liamkatt6434 Thanks Liam, yes it could well have been a misunderstanding, perhaps she had been given a briefing about social media which she had just interpreted a little over zealously. Or maybe there is something particularly sensitive about that individual pub? I believe from other comments that in the past a couple of these pubs had been regular haunts for off duty police officers, what with New Scotland Yard being nearby, but that has of course moved, so that's no longer the case. Whatever the issue is, a short polite explanation of the rationale behind it would have made the encounter a lot less jarring!
There are other government agencies close to the pub. Google “GCHQ Reveals Secret London Site” (they went public about it apparently in 2019) which turns out to be on Palmer Street, directly next to the pub
I think your presentation of the featured pubs is always balanced and the viewers are able to make up their own mind. If there is a policy of "no filming for social media without prior permission from head office", then it really backfired in this instance at pub no. 5. If management thinks such limitations are necessary, they should be communicated better.
There are a few nice-looking pubs on the other side of Victoria Street (the same side as The Windsor Castle). The Greycoat Boy, The Barley Mow and The Royal Oak, towards Pimlico. Also one in Strutton Ground, the name of which I have forgotten!
Love this stuff. Heartbreaking that I live in Saudi Arabia so have limited ability to share in your discoveries. By the way, many thanks for your Lewes recommendations that guided I and my daughter through her first day of university earlier in the month. Do please keep it up.

Always love your pub videos Tweedy. The research must take an age and i do appreciate it. Victoria is not an area ive ever warmed to despite it being one of my commuting options home from London. I always preferred Waterloo as a station pub area. That said, when im next up that way I have a couple of possible stopping points for a cheeky pint on the way to the station etc. Thanks as ever.
Thanks Rob, and I completely know what you mean about not warming to some parts of London. I feel that way about the area around Euston / St Pancras / Kings Cross to be honest (especially since the sad demise of the Bree Louise). Lots of other people seem to like that area though, and that video was one of my most successful!

You didn't miss much at the Adam & Eve -- one of the least attractive pubs in the area. The Duke of York is surprisingly good given its location (right across from Victoria Station), but it's a pastiche. At least the upstairs is quieter than you'd expect. The Phoenix is worth a visit, though it's more a gastropub than a proper pub. Speaking of which, I suspect that Greene King uses that shade of paint to make its pubs feel more 'restaurant-like' -- ie to encourage you to stay and eat their warehouse food from their identikit menus. There was nothing about the Colonies (in February 2024) that seemed even slightly 'colonial' -- if you want a pub with a US theme in the general area, go to the Constitution (though their theming begins and ends with their pub sign!)
Thank you! I think I have been to The Phoenix many years ago but I don't recall what it was like. I'm not sure I've ever set foot in the Duke of York despite working nearby for several years! It's odd, isn't it? My old colleagues and I had a set of pubs we'd go to and then some other pubs we'd never go to, and there wasn't actually much rhyme or reason to it.
Great review Tweedy. It's a shame that the staff at the Adam and Eve wouldn't let you film inside. Were you not wearing your fig leaf? Given the number of Greene King pubs you have already reviewed, it looks like you just happened to encounter a jobsworth on that occasion. I am pretty sure Greene King would give you permission if you were to ask them, but I suspect you are not going to bother after your encounter at the Adam and Eve.

Ha ha..that reminded me of the time I was reviewing one pub and the barmaid fetched the Landlord who in turn had to phone the Brewery who owned the pub. Finally after 30 mins I was given the go ahead😂..Buckingham Arms is a good boozer, been in there..Nice one John🍺👍
I used to work in that area also, until 2010, and went to the Cardinal a few times. The Cask and Glass at least twice, the Pineapple when it was the Colonies, the Buckingham which used to be a 'coppers' pub' apparently, and the Adam and Eve.
Hi John, of all these I enjoyed the history of the Pineapple the most, could it be the only one in the UK? Although tropical fruit is grown in the area where I live, hence the name of the region, Granada being Pomegranate, Pineapple isn't grown here, it is in the Canary Isles though. Wiki tells me that they were used as dining table ornaments ..... until they went off. A vineyard in central London? You'll have to move house!! Loved the tale of Duke of Edinburgh, I wonder if or how he disguised himself? Bad luck with the Adam and Eve and well done for not rising to the bait, plenty more pubs in the sea. If you do ever get to Portsmouth, The Duke of Buckingham will give you a good story to relate but it's now a restaurant I think😬😬 All the best!!

I'm really happy to hear you found that history interesting - I was in two minds about including the pub at all as it isn't much to look at in its modern guise but I did find the choice of name really intriguing, and there's something really fascinating to me about these obscure London alleys. I really should get to Portsmouth at some point for a pub video at some point, given my ancestral connections there. Thanks for the tip off on the Duke of Buckingham, I'll look it up!
@@chrisamies2141 I've driven past the Red Lion & Pineapple a few times but haven't yet been in. It's an intriguingly odd combination isn't it? My guess is - based on a suggestion in the Dictionary of Pub Names - that it's just down to a publican at some point in history moving from one pub to another but wanting to keep their old pub sign, and/or perhaps entice some of their former regulars to defect to the new venue. The other way I've heard this can happen is for two neighbouring pubs to merge into one. I grew up near to a Bull and Swan, in a double-width building, which apparently was at one time two distinct pubs, one called the Bull, one called the Swan.
I was just at the Windsor Castle (for the third time) yesterday. What a terrific place. I do think Sam Smith pubs consistently get so many things right--and I can count on a music-free and TV-free environment, which, for me, is crucial to enjoying a pub. As for the Adam and Eve, they really shot themselves in the foot. I won't be going there! Keep up the great work--you have added immeasurably to my enjoyment of this great city. PS, if you're ever in Beverley, I think you'd love the White Horse--I was there last week.

Use to work in Victoria st and have visited all the pubs you visited went mainly to the windsor castle /cardinal shame about the Adam and eve but there is other pubs near by the feathers 🪶 the grafton arms in the market

I took a break last week, hopefully getting out to film the next video today which should mean it's going to be published tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday. Perhaps a bit of an obscure part of London - Crouch End - but I do think it has a couple of interesting pubs.
I used to live in Pimlico and the pubs around there and Victoria/Belgravia were amazing. I was paralytic most Saturdays (I was in my 20s and single. Also, drink responsibly!)😂

Who the hell tells our man Tweedy he can’t film in public? Who do they think they are, Keir Starmer? I honestly haven’t had a pint anywhere near this area for twenty years, and in that instance it wasn’t even Victoria. It was at an execrable, miserable hole of a Pimlico pub called The Pimlico Tram. Maybe it’s time I give Victoria another go. A few of these looked quite nice. As for The Pimlico Tram, apparently known by locals as “The Tramp”, it is thankfully no more.

Maybe that run-in at the Adam and Eve was just a one off, or a misunderstanding... but I do worry it might be a sign of the times, I certainly get an uncomfortable sense of creeping authoritarianism in society. I would completely understand - and even applaud - a member of staff telling me to stop filming if I was disturbing other customers, invading their privacy, or generally spoiling the atmosphere... but I really don't think I was doing any of those things here - they had no objection to me taking interior shots with my phone, and for the bits where I was talking to camera I was standing outside the pub, nowhere near any other customers. Yes I just about remember the days of the Pimlico Tram! While I still worked in the area it was converted into the "Cask Pub and Kitchen" which many of my colleagues raved about, but I could never warm to. To me it's a "craft beer" bar, not a pub.
What poor form of them to bar you Tweedy...that one is off the list alright. Just up the road a bit is a place called the Bag O'Nails across the Rubens Hotel where I usually stay, perhaps you may know it. Over the years I had many good friends who worked for Her Majesty and we would meet for a quick pint there as they would nip out on a short break. Heard some great stories along the way and managed to watch the Changing of the Guard from inside the Palace many times. I'll be in London from October 2 thru the 5th, let me know if you are filming then, I'd like to make a short drop by and say hello. Cheers.

Well, the Adam & Eve is right out. The inside of the Windsor Castle looks inviting, and I appreciate that Sam Smith's "reinstates the partitions and layout" as they would have been years ago.
Yes, I have no desire to go back to the Adam and Eve again! I agree the Windsor Castle is the best looking of the pubs here, but there was also a nice atmosphere to the Cask and Glass and the Buckingham Arms.
I’ve never been a fan of Greene King’s pubs anyway. Their ales are less than average. And that “IPA” of theirs is nothing of the sort. I always avoid them if I can.

The landlady of the Adam and Eve is clearly not switched on. Being on this site is fantastic marketing and costs nothing. Her loss and I will give it a swerve as a result. When you have a pub as good as the Buckingham Arms why would you go elsewhere?

It really would have been a better outcome for everyone if the staff there had try to engage me in a conversation about what I was trying to do - but it was all a bit unnecessarily officious. I agree the Buckingham Arms just a few doors down is a far nicer pub. A better beer selection, more interesting interior and a much warmer welcome!

@@TweedyPubs I had it last week with MarkfromtheStates. 3 attempts - phone and laptop. I wonder if English Heritage have had a word?! This is what I tried to say: Lots of name changing pubs here and I thought that was a 90s thing. That time when the King’s Head became the Apron and Firkin. I associate the drinking of halves with the 1970s! In real life and on telly. Frank Marker used to drink half pints on Public Eye. Mind you, he was supposed to be skint. I love the maps and it’s great seeing that continuity with Pineapple Court. It surprised me there were still fields in this area of London in the late 1700s. I guess the huge expansion ran from the later Victorian and on through to the mid twentieth century. The Cask and Glass looked nice - thank goodness it was saved. How could they even think about demolishing it? The bay window at the Buckingham Arms was appealing too. Full credit for your restraint with pub 5. Just like with English Heritage, it bugs me that senior management are happy to task junior staff to spout unlawful to crap members of the public! Marvellous video once again. Thanks Tweedy.

I had actually been thinking about making this video for a few months now, but had put it off because I was waiting for the Pineapple to reopen after its renaming. Which, regrettably, also came with a refurbishment - and of course not a sympathetic one. Clearly the refurbishment was a step in the wrong direction - not that it had been in a particularly good place in its previous incarnation - but I did find something ever so slightly uplifting about the fact that they chose to revert to its historic name. I feel like there is at least some glimmer of understanding in these corporate behemoths that a very large part of the appeal of pubs is the sense of tradition and continuity - and the names are a not insignificant part of that. There is clearly a lesson still to be learned by them that preserving the interiors is even more important! I could probably stomach being in a pub with an immaculately preserved Victorian interior but named something absurd like the Frappucino and Firkin. That would be better than a pub which has been consistently named the Red Lion for 300 years but has been gutted and now looks like a Starbucks. Thank you particularly for the comment about Pineapple Court - that was one of those moments were I felt I was veering off the pub topic a bit, but it was something I found personally very interesting because that alley seemed so enduring, despite all the redevelopment in the area. I recall reading in Samuel Pepys' Diary about the exotic birds kept along a nearby stretch of road alongside St. James's Park (now called Birdcage Walk) and there are still pelicans in the park as a legacy of that. So it somehow seemed quite plausible there might also have been exotic fruits grown nearby at one time. I am glad things only went awry with the final pub of the day! I can quite imagine if I'd had a run-in like that at the first pub on the itinerary I might have just given up and gone home!

Greene King, an utterly useless brewer (sic), brewing utterly useless "beers". I refuse to visit any of their pubs anywhere in the country. They have closed more historic breweries than I have had hot dinners.

Thanks Paul. I agree, I do really enjoy a Sam Smiths pub for their interiors - I know they're often a recreation rather than being all original fabric but they clearly put a lot of effort into the craftsmanship of the fixtures and fittings and they create a fantastic atmosphere, in my opinion.
Last i was in that area was 2006 - I think the you are missing the point you need to show the beers on tap that will tell ya what social class hangs out there (sorry demographic's),. cheers from Sydney city oz just a tip for ya!!! Yes I had always assumed it would be a Sam Smith's pub that would be the first to tell me I'm not allowed to do any filming on the premises. I always ask in Sam Smith pubs - like everywhere else - if it's OK to take a few interior shots with my phone and to date they've always said yes, to my slight surprise. Although one landlord did - only half jokingly - accuse me of being a spy from the brewery! I think Sam Smith's are rightly proud of their pub interiors, and I hope if anyone from their head office is even aware my UA-cam channel exists that they'd see I'm just trying to showcase them, and it's free advertising really. I always try to visit pubs at quieter times to minimise the disruption to any other customers - I really don't want to spoil the atmosphere for anyone, I just want to help more people who might appreciate that kind of pub find out about them.
Yes I always approach Sam Smith's pubs with a little trepidation, as I am aware of their policy about phones etc. I always ask behind the bar if it's OK to take those interior shots first, and I try to be there when they're not busy so I'm not disturbing other customers. I think that's the essence of the policy - they want it to be a nice atmosphere for the customers.
I think a comment needs to be made re these Farrow and Ball jibes on modern London pubs. Whilst to a degree I think most of the watchers of these vlogs would prefer a very traditional pub, I think a particular fact is being consistently missed. The destruction of the character of these pubs almost cerraintly occurred in the decades of this 50s 60s and 70s not when they were farrowed and balled. All that has been done is to try and rectify what would have far worse interior design crimes. They have sought to reverse this destruction and turn them into pleasant, clean, bright welcoming environments probably reminiscent of your front room. Now as a long term watcher I know you have referenced this previously, but new viewers will not necessarily be aware when you are criticising them.
If I had five pints during the course of making these videos the quality of the presentation would deteriorate significantly, particularly by the fourth or fifth pub. It would also take much longer to film and edit because I'd keep fumbling my lines and having to redo them. There's also the very real risk I'd get to pint three or four and think I just can't be arsed doing any more filming.

Yes I am always expecting in Sam Smith's pubs to be told no when I ask if it's OK to take a few photos, but it hasn't happened yet. I think the rule on phones is just about not spoiling the atmosphere - which I agree with - and I generally try to get to these places when they're not busy, and then do the interior shots as discreetly as I can, without bothering the other customers. I think Sam Smith's are quietly proud of their interiors, and rightly so. After all what I'm doing is really just showcasing those interiors and giving them a bit of free advertising. ...which makes it all the more baffling that I had that encounter at the Adam and Eve! If the lady had engaged with me a bit and asked what the channel was about or perhaps just taken the time to explain the rationale behind their "no social media" policy then I'm sure we would have arrived at a better outcome... but she just marched over, huffily told me to stop and that I had to get permission from head office then then marched off again. So what they've ended up with is actually some negative publicity for the pub, and the chain as a whole, rather than a few minutes talking about its history and so on. I'm generally pretty positive about most places on this channel as long as they haven't completely destroyed the interior.
Me too! I've been to quite a few Sam Smiths pubs now, and always ask behind the bar if it's OK to take some interior shots, and to my surprise they've been happy for me to do so every time so far. I was perhaps pushing it a bit on this occasion by doing some of the talking to camera in the back room there, but there was nobody else in that bit of the pub at that time and I don't think I was disturbing anyone.
Well I suppose any pub has the right to impose whatever rules they want - within reason - but that only applies when you're actually on the premises. It's a bit of an overreach if someone is just standing on the pavement outside the pub!
I agree! I generally try and look to the positive for just about every pub I feature on this channel, and it's only when I encounter an absolute eyesore of a refurbishment that I tend to be critical. In my opinion that is still legitimate and useful feedback which the pub industry needs to hear, for its own sake as much as for the customers.
There are no decent pubs in the vicinity of Victoria station. Mostly just tourist trap pubs pretending to be old with history.....but in reality they didn't exist before 1990, or something like that! Horribly over-priced, and with rubbish food.

Maybe I should have engaged with the staff at the Adam and Eve a bit more to try and understand the reason behind this apparent rule, but the member of staff who spoke to me was quite huffy about the whole thing, and I didn't really get the sense she wanted to have a meaningful discussion about it. If the company wants to control its "brand image" online then they've probably achieved the opposite of the most desirable outcome here. I generally try and look to the positive about every pub I feature. Oh well, like you say - it's their loss!

I've had this area at the back of my mind for a while now but I was waiting for the Pineapple to re-open as I was keen to see what it was like now. Needless to say I'm not really keen on the current interior but I did enjoy researching the history.

Thanks Russell! Yes I do think the Windsor Castle is a gem - obviously it would look a bit nicer without the scaffolding! I hope you got a sense from the video of how wonderfully quiet it was in there. No music, just the sound of quiet conversation and perhaps the occasional clink of glasses. It's in a back street so is often a bit quiet when other pubs in that area are busy.

Shamed to admit that I have only darkened the doors of the Buckingham Arms pub from today’s list. And yes, the wife and I were lucky enough to snag one of the bay tables on our visit. As for drink choices, I’ve always been partial to a pint of Spitfire, when in good form. Sorry about the Adam & Eve…a missed opportunity on their part. Thanks Ed! I think you made a good choice there, the Buckingham Arms does have some nice interior features and I think they might actually be the most original of this list.
Yes, perhaps I've been a bit unfair on Spitfire in the past! Mostly when going to Shepherd Neame pubs I'd tend to opt for Master Brew because I usually like the lower ABV beers... but actually I think Spitfire has a bit more flavour to it.
I've always remembered half pints being served, often for Shandy. But in the old days, when the old boys were around, they would often order a "half n half". That was half an IPA in a pint glass with a bottle of stout that they mixed in.
I'm fascinated by these "beer cocktails" for want of a better word. The landlord at the Royal Oak in Borough a few years back told me he still has older customers who ask for various different combinations of their beers. They even had nicknames - if I recall correctly a half of old (ale) and a half of bitter was called a "mother in law".
@@TweedyPubs What used to be popular, not sure if it still is, in Youngs pubs like The Buckingham was a 'Ram and Special' , which was half a pint of Youngs Special Bitter in a pint glass and a bottle of Youngs Ramrod, which was basically a strong ale, then you'd mix the two.
I also worked in the Victoria area, about twenty-five or so years ago, and those pubs were all frequently visited. The Cask and Glass might have been my favourite, simply because it is quite a unique little pub. Like you said about The Colonies (The Pineapple), it didn't have the greatest interior but what character it did have was ripped out in a refurbishment some years ago. It was popular in the summer because you could drink in the yard at the back. I quite liked The Buckingham, but again not mad on the refurbishment. I often wondered about that narrow side bar, thanks for clearing that up. The Adam and Eve was problably the least favourite on that circuit with me and my fellow drinkers back then. I quite liked The Cardinal/ Windsor Castle, although some people found it too dark and gloomy, one of the main reasons I liked it. Other pubs round there include the Albert on Victoria Street, which is something of a tourist pub, the Feathers on Broadway (I think its Broadway) and a pub that I think changed name relatively frequently on Strutton Ground, at one time a sort of fake Irish pub.

Thanks Liam! I must have visited more than two hundred pubs since I've been doing this channel, and I can only think of two occasions when staff behind the bar recognised me from the channel. Maybe that's a good thing..? I think most people in the trade have no idea about the channel, and maybe even if they had heard of it they wouldn't think it very interesting or relevant.
@@TweedyPubs I imagine she was little more than a cheap 'jobsworth' recently promoted to 'temporary bar supervisor' or similar. You always present pubs in a really good light and I am sure that her employers would like nothing better than free exposure on a channel with such a considerable following.
@@liamkatt6434 Thanks Liam, yes it could well have been a misunderstanding, perhaps she had been given a briefing about social media which she had just interpreted a little over zealously. Or maybe there is something particularly sensitive about that individual pub? I believe from other comments that in the past a couple of these pubs had been regular haunts for off duty police officers, what with New Scotland Yard being nearby, but that has of course moved, so that's no longer the case. Whatever the issue is, a short polite explanation of the rationale behind it would have made the encounter a lot less jarring!
There are other government agencies close to the pub. Google “GCHQ Reveals Secret London Site” (they went public about it apparently in 2019) which turns out to be on Palmer Street, directly next to the pub
You're always respectful and do the pubs a favour by reviewing them. Sometimes people are just having a bad day I guess?

I think your presentation of the featured pubs is always balanced and the viewers are able to make up their own mind. If there is a policy of "no filming for social media without prior permission from head office", then it really backfired in this instance at pub no. 5. If management thinks such limitations are necessary, they should be communicated better.
There are a few nice-looking pubs on the other side of Victoria Street (the same side as The Windsor Castle). The Greycoat Boy, The Barley Mow and The Royal Oak, towards Pimlico. Also one in Strutton Ground, the name of which I have forgotten!
Love this stuff. Heartbreaking that I live in Saudi Arabia so have limited ability to share in your discoveries. By the way, many thanks for your Lewes recommendations that guided I and my daughter through her first day of university earlier in the month. Do please keep it up.

Always love your pub videos Tweedy. The research must take an age and i do appreciate it. Victoria is not an area ive ever warmed to despite it being one of my commuting options home from London. I always preferred Waterloo as a station pub area. That said, when im next up that way I have a couple of possible stopping points for a cheeky pint on the way to the station etc. Thanks as ever.

I feel that way about the area around Euston / St Pancras / Kings Cross to be honest (especially since the sad demise of the Bree Louise). Lots of other people seem to like that area though, and that video was one of my most successful!

One of my favorite pubs in London was The Victoria, which was always good for lunch. This was back in the 80's.
I remember The Victoria as they had a prominent sign outside that said "No football colors allowed." That was hilarious.
Greene King closed the Hardy and Hanson brewery in Kimberley where my father-in-law worked, so I’ve avoided them ever since.
Sorry to hear that. They're definitely not my favourite brewery / pub chain either, but they own so many pubs in London that they're a bit hard to avoid!
You didn't miss much at the Adam & Eve -- one of the least attractive pubs in the area. The Duke of York is surprisingly good given its location (right across from Victoria Station), but it's a pastiche. At least the upstairs is quieter than you'd expect. The Phoenix is worth a visit, though it's more a gastropub than a proper pub. Speaking of which, I suspect that Greene King uses that shade of paint to make its pubs feel more 'restaurant-like' -- ie to encourage you to stay and eat their warehouse food from their identikit menus. There was nothing about the Colonies (in February 2024) that seemed even slightly 'colonial' -- if you want a pub with a US theme in the general area, go to the Constitution (though their theming begins and ends with their pub sign!)

Thank you! I think I have been to The Phoenix many years ago but I don't recall what it was like. I'm not sure I've ever set foot in the Duke of York despite working nearby for several years! It's odd, isn't it? My old colleagues and I had a set of pubs we'd go to and then some other pubs we'd never go to, and there wasn't actually much rhyme or reason to it.
Another tremendous film of London pub life. Ever thought of doing the many interesting hotel bars?
Wish there was also some talk of the the quality of the drinks.
Great review Tweedy. It's a shame that the staff at the Adam and Eve wouldn't let you film inside. Were you not wearing your fig leaf? Given the number of Greene King pubs you have already reviewed, it looks like you just happened to encounter a jobsworth on that occasion. I am pretty sure Greene King would give you permission if you were to ask them, but I suspect you are not going to bother after your encounter at the Adam and Eve.

Ha ha..that reminded me of the time I was reviewing one pub and the barmaid fetched the Landlord who in turn had to phone the Brewery who owned the pub. Finally after 30 mins I was given the go ahead😂..Buckingham Arms is a good boozer, been in there..Nice one John🍺👍

Honest Places made a video of visiting The Pineapple in Stockport. A very different establishment with a hygiene rating of only 2.
I used to work in that area also, until 2010, and went to the Cardinal a few times. The Cask and Glass at least twice, the Pineapple when it was the Colonies, the Buckingham which used to be a 'coppers' pub' apparently, and the Adam and Eve.

Although tropical fruit is grown in the area where I live, hence the name of the region, Granada being Pomegranate, Pineapple isn't grown here, it is in the Canary Isles though. Wiki tells me that they were used as dining table ornaments ..... until they went off.

Thanks David! As Chris also replied below, there are a few Pineapple pubs in London - including one local to me, although I haven't been there much of late. I'm really happy to hear you found that history interesting - I was in two minds about including the pub at all as it isn't much to look at in its modern guise but I did find the choice of name really intriguing, and there's something really fascinating to me about these obscure London alleys.
I really should get to Portsmouth at some point for a pub video at some point, given my ancestral connections there. Thanks for the tip off on the Duke of Buckingham, I'll look it up!
@@chrisamies2141 I've driven past the Red Lion & Pineapple a few times but haven't yet been in. It's an intriguingly odd combination isn't it? My guess is - based on a suggestion in the Dictionary of Pub Names - that it's just down to a publican at some point in history moving from one pub to another but wanting to keep their old pub sign, and/or perhaps entice some of their former regulars to defect to the new venue.
The other way I've heard this can happen is for two neighbouring pubs to merge into one. I grew up near to a Bull and Swan, in a double-width building, which apparently was at one time two distinct pubs, one called the Bull, one called the Swan.
I was just at the Windsor Castle (for the third time) yesterday. What a terrific place. I do think Sam Smith pubs consistently get so many things right--and I can count on a music-free and TV-free environment, which, for me, is crucial to enjoying a pub. As for the Adam and Eve, they really shot themselves in the foot. I won't be going there! Keep up the great work--you have added immeasurably to my enjoyment of this great city. PS, if you're ever in Beverley, I think you'd love the White Horse--I was there last week.

Use to work in Victoria st and have visited all the pubs you visited went mainly to the windsor castle /cardinal shame about the Adam and eve but there is other pubs near by the feathers 🪶 the grafton arms in the market
Yes I think the Windsor Castle / Cardinal might well be the best of the bunch here, but I have always had a soft spot for the Cask and Glass as well.

I honestly haven’t had a pint anywhere near this area for twenty years, and in that instance it wasn’t even Victoria. It was at an execrable, miserable hole of a Pimlico pub called The Pimlico Tram. Maybe it’s time I give Victoria another go. A few of these looked quite nice. As for The Pimlico Tram, apparently known by locals as “The Tramp”, it is thankfully no more.
Thank you! Maybe that run-in at the Adam and Eve was just a one off, or a misunderstanding... but I do worry it might be a sign of the times, I certainly get an uncomfortable sense of creeping authoritarianism in society.
I would completely understand - and even applaud - a member of staff telling me to stop filming if I was disturbing other customers, invading their privacy, or generally spoiling the atmosphere... but I really don't think I was doing any of those things here - they had no objection to me taking interior shots with my phone, and for the bits where I was talking to camera I was standing outside the pub, nowhere near any other customers.
Yes I just about remember the days of the Pimlico Tram! While I still worked in the area it was converted into the "Cask Pub and Kitchen" which many of my colleagues raved about, but I could never warm to. To me it's a "craft beer" bar, not a pub.
What poor form of them to bar you Tweedy...that one is off the list alright. Just up the road a bit is a place called the Bag O'Nails across the Rubens Hotel where I usually stay, perhaps you may know it. Over the years I had many good friends who worked for Her Majesty and we would meet for a quick pint there as they would nip out on a short break. Heard some great stories along the way and managed to watch the Changing of the Guard from inside the Palace many times. I'll be in London from October 2 thru the 5th, let me know if you are filming then, I'd like to make a short drop by and say hello. Cheers.

Yes, I have no desire to go back to the Adam and Eve again! I agree the Windsor Castle is the best looking of the pubs here, but there was also a nice atmosphere to the Cask and Glass and the Buckingham Arms.
I’ve never been a fan of Greene King’s pubs anyway. Their ales are less than average. And that “IPA” of theirs is nothing of the sort. I always avoid them if I can.

The landlady of the Adam and Eve is clearly not switched on. Being on this site is fantastic marketing and costs nothing. Her loss and I will give it a swerve as a result. When you have a pub as good as the Buckingham Arms why would you go elsewhere?
I agree Ian! It really would have been a better outcome for everyone if the staff there had try to engage me in a conversation about what I was trying to do - but it was all a bit unnecessarily officious.
I agree the Buckingham Arms just a few doors down is a far nicer pub. A better beer selection, more interesting interior and a much warmer welcome!

This is what I tried to say:
Lots of name changing pubs here and I thought that was a 90s thing. That time when the King’s Head became the Apron and Firkin.
I associate the drinking of halves with the 1970s! In real life and on telly. Frank Marker used to drink half pints on Public Eye. Mind you, he was supposed to be skint.
I love the maps and it’s great seeing that continuity with Pineapple Court. It surprised me there were still fields in this area of London in the late 1700s. I guess the huge expansion ran from the later Victorian and on through to the mid twentieth century.
The Cask and Glass looked nice - thank goodness it was saved. How could they even think about demolishing it? The bay window at the Buckingham Arms was appealing too.
Full credit for your restraint with pub 5. Just like with English Heritage, it bugs me that senior management are happy to task junior staff to spout unlawful to crap members of the public!

I had actually been thinking about making this video for a few months now, but had put it off because I was waiting for the Pineapple to reopen after its renaming. Which, regrettably, also came with a refurbishment - and of course not a sympathetic one. Clearly the refurbishment was a step in the wrong direction - not that it had been in a particularly good place in its previous incarnation - but I did find something ever so slightly uplifting about the fact that they chose to revert to its historic name. I feel like there is at least some glimmer of understanding in these corporate behemoths that a very large part of the appeal of pubs is the sense of tradition and continuity - and the names are a not insignificant part of that. There is clearly a lesson still to be learned by them that preserving the interiors is even more important! I could probably stomach being in a pub with an immaculately preserved Victorian interior but named something absurd like the Frappucino and Firkin. That would be better than a pub which has been consistently named the Red Lion for 300 years but has been gutted and now looks like a Starbucks.
Thank you particularly for the comment about Pineapple Court - that was one of those moments were I felt I was veering off the pub topic a bit, but it was something I found personally very interesting because that alley seemed so enduring, despite all the redevelopment in the area. I recall reading in Samuel Pepys' Diary about the exotic birds kept along a nearby stretch of road alongside St. James's Park (now called Birdcage Walk) and there are still pelicans in the park as a legacy of that. So it somehow seemed quite plausible there might also have been exotic fruits grown nearby at one time.
I am glad things only went awry with the final pub of the day! I can quite imagine if I'd had a run-in like that at the first pub on the itinerary I might have just given up and gone home!

Thanks Paul. I agree, I do really enjoy a Sam Smiths pub for their interiors - I know they're often a recreation rather than being all original fabric but they clearly put a lot of effort into the craftsmanship of the fixtures and fittings and they create a fantastic atmosphere, in my opinion.
Last i was in that area was 2006 - I think the you are missing the point you need to show the beers on tap that will tell ya what social class hangs out there (sorry demographic's),.

Thanks Elvis. Perhaps there was something particularly sensitive about this location - there are a lot of government offices nearby etc... If that was the case a short explanation of the issue would have made a big difference!

Thank you! I assure you I have no intention of any facial hair growth! I was just a bit too lazy to shave, thinking naively that the gloomy weather we've had of late might hide it, but it turned out to be sunnier than expected!

Yes I had always assumed it would be a Sam Smith's pub that would be the first to tell me I'm not allowed to do any filming on the premises. I always ask in Sam Smith pubs - like everywhere else - if it's OK to take a few interior shots with my phone and to date they've always said yes, to my slight surprise. Although one landlord did - only half jokingly - accuse me of being a spy from the brewery!
I think Sam Smith's are rightly proud of their pub interiors, and I hope if anyone from their head office is even aware my UA-cam channel exists that they'd see I'm just trying to showcase them, and it's free advertising really. I always try to visit pubs at quieter times to minimise the disruption to any other customers - I really don't want to spoil the atmosphere for anyone, I just want to help more people who might appreciate that kind of pub find out about them.
Samuel Smith's pubs ban all phones,etc in there pubs,up hear in the north ,so you did well filming in the sam Smith pub
Yes I always approach Sam Smith's pubs with a little trepidation, as I am aware of their policy about phones etc. I always ask behind the bar if it's OK to take those interior shots first, and I try to be there when they're not busy so I'm not disturbing other customers. I think that's the essence of the policy - they want it to be a nice atmosphere for the customers.
I think a comment needs to be made re these Farrow and Ball jibes on modern London pubs. Whilst to a degree I think most of the watchers of these vlogs would prefer a very traditional pub, I think a particular fact is being consistently missed. The destruction of the character of these pubs almost cerraintly occurred in the decades of this 50s 60s and 70s not when they were farrowed and balled. All that has been done is to try and rectify what would have far worse interior design crimes. They have sought to reverse this destruction and turn them into pleasant, clean, bright welcoming environments probably reminiscent of your front room. Now as a long term watcher I know you have referenced this previously, but new viewers will not necessarily be aware when you are criticising them.

I do rather enjoy your videos, however your insistence of 'Half" Pints does rather lower the tone a bit. What is wrong with a Pint? A pint is lovely.
If I had five pints during the course of making these videos the quality of the presentation would deteriorate significantly, particularly by the fourth or fifth pub. It would also take much longer to film and edit because I'd keep fumbling my lines and having to redo them. There's also the very real risk I'd get to pint three or four and think I just can't be arsed doing any more filming.

Yes I am always expecting in Sam Smith's pubs to be told no when I ask if it's OK to take a few photos, but it hasn't happened yet. I think the rule on phones is just about not spoiling the atmosphere - which I agree with - and I generally try to get to these places when they're not busy, and then do the interior shots as discreetly as I can, without bothering the other customers. I think Sam Smith's are quietly proud of their interiors, and rightly so. After all what I'm doing is really just showcasing those interiors and giving them a bit of free advertising.
...which makes it all the more baffling that I had that encounter at the Adam and Eve! If the lady had engaged with me a bit and asked what the channel was about or perhaps just taken the time to explain the rationale behind their "no social media" policy then I'm sure we would have arrived at a better outcome... but she just marched over, huffily told me to stop and that I had to get permission from head office then then marched off again. So what they've ended up with is actually some negative publicity for the pub, and the chain as a whole, rather than a few minutes talking about its history and so on. I'm generally pretty positive about most places on this channel as long as they haven't completely destroyed the interior.

Me too! I've been to quite a few Sam Smiths pubs now, and always ask behind the bar if it's OK to take some interior shots, and to my surprise they've been happy for me to do so every time so far. I was perhaps pushing it a bit on this occasion by doing some of the talking to camera in the back room there, but there was nobody else in that bit of the pub at that time and I don't think I was disturbing anyone.

Well I suppose any pub has the right to impose whatever rules they want - within reason - but that only applies when you're actually on the premises. It's a bit of an overreach if someone is just standing on the pavement outside the pub!

I agree! I generally try and look to the positive for just about every pub I feature on this channel, and it's only when I encounter an absolute eyesore of a refurbishment that I tend to be critical. In my opinion that is still legitimate and useful feedback which the pub industry needs to hear, for its own sake as much as for the customers.
There are no decent pubs in the vicinity of Victoria station. Mostly just tourist trap pubs pretending to be old with history.....but in reality they didn't exist before 1990, or something like that! Horribly over-priced, and with rubbish food.
