Good evening Rob, Hope you are keeping well, Your pub videos are one of my favourite subjects and again you have not disappointed, Absolutely fantastic job again Sir, Really enjoyed it. Thank you
It's worth a stop. Rumor has it that by British law, there can be no nice pubs closer than a mile from a train station. Charing Cross seems to be the exception.
Thank you for another video Rob. In a world of chaos and troubling times, your videos are always a welcome reprieve. Sincerely, this world needs more Rob and less whatever the hell everyone else is doing. I appreciate these beautiful moments of calm and curiosity. You're the best, thank you.
Five real gems from Robslondon, one of Londons finest and underated Historians. This channel deserves more coverage so come on all you subscribers and Share Share Share.
Great vid, The Nell Gwynn was one of the calls in our pub crawl around Covent Garden in the 90s, The Maple leaf was another where I still recall meeting a rather dapper gentleman wearing a Pith Hat (as you do). Thanks Rob.
Lol Michael there were not so many dapper gentlemen wearing pith helmets at that time and I never saw the chap at the Maple Leaf, but i used to see a pith helmet wearing gentleman using my university library at that time which was not that far away. I loved th Nell Gwynn it was more genteel those days and not that busy on a Saturday evening and it closed very early. Remembering one of the regulars always putting on "Kinky Boots" on the juke box and banging my head regularly going to the toilet. Thanks for a great video Rob the Pineapple and Dove also bring back memories.
@@michaelj3282 I dont know if the timing works with Mr Pith Helmet I was a mature student at SOAS until 1993 and seeing somebody with a pith helmet going about their business was surreal and so Aint half hot mum He definately was taller than Don Estelle. I remember the lady managing the Nell Gwynn on a Saturday was from Bow as we discussed PG Tips chimps who did some filming in Bethnal Green and a famous Bow chimpanzee And if I tell that to my grand children today they still believe it
Once again a very interesting video. On my recent trip to London I had my sunday roast as usual at the Dove. I book a table months ahead, as soon as I plan my travel. This time I also visited Nell Gwynn, for the first time. I must have walked quite nearThe Ship and Shovell, but came down Villiers street where I visited Gordon's winebar which is a fantastic place you can talk about in a video about the Embankment 😂. I had a closer look at Cleopatra's Needle. My most regular pub in London is The Victoria near Paddington, since I allways have a hotell in or around Sussex Gardens. Greetings from Norway. Takk! Ronny
Great video! I spent many hours sitting in cozy local pubs, as a younger man. One of my favorite things to do, especially with some good mates. Having lived in the US for the last 35 years, a local is something I miss. Back to blighty next year for a visit, so I'll be frequenting some of my local favorites.
My God, as soon as i saw the terrace of The Dove, it brought back a painful memory from about 1999. I'd forgotten all about it until that moment. The Nell Gwynne I have fond memories of, working just around the corner at the Vaudeville in the 80s. Id like to add the Cask and Glass in Wilfred St. SW1 to that list. Used to be a perfect place for a little intimate téte a téte, back in the day...
You really do get about and find some amazing little places tucked away. That Dove looks a lovely place to visit. I get the feeling it was a real locals place given all the names you said lived near by and those that visited. I love those sort of places. I feel that with that sort of patronage you can almost smell and feel the years gone by in those old walls. History is an amazing thing. I hope you and family are all well Rob. As always stay safe and best regards.
Well Rob, the first video for ages that I can’t comment on! I gave up the booze ten years ago and don’t even step in a pub these days, not even for a lemonade! Back when I did enjoy a pint, my favourite pub was The Westminster Arms in Storey’s Gate. Not a particular cosy boozer, but the beer was good!
Another great pub video ! 😊🍻🍺 I do like the idea of Nell Gwynne’s Cellar and the tunnel even if it is fake! All the pubs looks great… time for a cosy pub crawl?! ❤
Bloody great vid that Rob. Felt it was for me personally 😂. That Ship & Shovell is so unusual, wow. Red Lion worth seeking out . Little bar in the Dove is a cracker. Finally so glad the Pineapple was saved, love the location of that pub..great stuff👍👏🍺
@Robslondon I'm waiting for the missus to go and see some friends around Lower Marsh..I said I'll come with you but leave u to it whilst I go pub touring😂🍺 hopefully early next year
Thanks, I loved this video Rob, I'm back home to London soon for Christmas and you've given me a great pub itinerary! I would like to add my old local, The Swan in Chiswick, a coay little art deco pub tucked away down a side street.Warm, friendly, comfortable but no frills - perfect!
Rob, you've done it again! I love your pub crawls, especially when I get the history behind them. The Cock & Lion on Easleys Mews was a rather cozy place. They served a Cole slaw that my wife continues to rave about. Frankly, I was more interested in the ale. I am in the process of rebuilding the family room bar that I constructed 38 years ago. While it won't technically be a "public house" as that term implies, it will be open twenty-four hours a day to family and friends, and there's never a bill. If I don't charge anyone for anything I am not required to be licensed. As for the smallest bar in the world, I suspect that the Colonial Inn in Concord, Massachusetts might just be smaller than that at the Dove. Based on your video footage, I'd say the Guinness people might have to eat a little humble pie and award that distinction to the colonist. I'll grab a few photos of it the next time I visit there and send them along to you. Again, your research and presentation is superb. Thank you for your hard work.
Wonderful comment Paul. I need to see The Colonial Inn now! (A good excuse to visit Massachusetts; I've always wanted to go as I have family history there). Stay well :-)
This looks amazing Rob, I was trying to think of a few pubs for winter warmth, this is exactly what I needed. Keep up the good work, it’s always appreciated.
Another superb vid. I’ve bin in the Ship & Shovell and had a cosy pint with fish and chips. Not familiar with the rest but now I’ve got an excuse to check some of these out when I hit the big smoke next time. One from me would be the Old Coffee House in Soho which I discovered last year. Cheers 🍻 😊👍
Another tremenbous video. Thanks so much. The Dove - the only one I recall being in - has a sort of built in privacy, depending on which direction you're coming from. I recall almost not having the joy and delight of seeing Chiswick House and gardens simply because of the bloomin' railings down the middle of the Great Weat Road which require you to walk half a mile in either direction to get to a crossing. I'm too old for going over the top these days 😂
A few years ago I was invited to St James’s Palace for an international trade dinner to be hosted by the Duke of York. I thought that as it was a government event booze might be lacking, so I sought a pre-event drink. I came across the Red Lion and had a couple of pints to ready myself. In the end the dinner was accompanied by a wide range of beverages and I ended quite tipsy in the company of the Philippine Ambassador! The Red Lion is a hidden gem, a must visit.
Superb video as always Rob, thank you. I frequented the Dove often in my late teens and early twenties, in fact I had my stag night there. Probably not one of my wisest decisions considering its proximity to the wet stuff, but I lived to tell the tale. Great pub with great beer, London Pride still one of my favourites. Sadly not visited any of the others featured, looks as though I've missed out. Cheers
About 15 years ago I was in the Red Lion in Crown Passage one Saturday when a group of guys came in dressed for a wedding. I used to pop in the Ship and Shovel on the early 1980s on my way home from work to partake of a spelended pint of Brakespear bitter, the other half of the pub was a still a sandwich bar at the time. At lunch time they used to do a rather niche hot bacon, kidney and mushroom roll, not to somes taste but I still remember it today as being great.
I'm so glad you posted this! I keep telling people this was a sandwich bar where I used to get my lunch every day when I worked in the bank at the end of the passage in the early 80s. Chicken supreme and salad on a granary bap😂
Thank you so much for that super presentation 👍 That was so interesting. I liked your funny twist of the ghost vanishing through the 'no exit' sign! The ' no exit ' sign it's self was interesting...the false door made from those beautiful tiles was a pretty little joke ! Best Wishes J ❤️
Well researched and written, an enjoyable and relaxing watch. I will definitely make a point of visiting one or more of these pubs when next in London.
@ There’s a good case for a string of traditional music pubs, near the Thames? Plenty of sailing songs, tunes from overseas and exaggerated plots of adventure? Nothing with a joke box, all hundred’s of years old and all conserving London’s heritage. What do you think?
Really interesting Rob. All new pubs to me except for The Pineapple which I know is the local of Tweedy from Tweedy Pubs UA-cam! Thanks very much and look forward to your next video and hope it is a ghost one for the winter evenings and please do include the London stories from my book My Family Ghosts and other Strange Happenings as I am sure that your viewers will enjoy them!

@Robslondon I've had the pleasure of visiting the UK several times; so many great CAMRA pubs visited and enjoyed; so many more to visit when I come back for another holiday. 😉
Either of these pubs are interesting, nice video about these 5 pubs in London. However my main pub is basically around the corner from where I live in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and is called Residency For The People. The two owners are both friends of mine. In any case cheers mate!

I spent a lot of time in the Nell Gwynne in the early 2000s. Not sure I would describe it as cosy. Characterful certainly. The stairs down to the toilets are a hair-raising experience especially after a few pints. It was also threatened with closure for redevelopment in 2004 or thereabouts but thankfully reprieved. The landlady at the Ship is lovely and the staff tend to be very friendly. The Opera Tavern next to the Coliseum is very cosy upstairs with lovely leather banquettes and Sam Smith's Museum Ale
I've visited all except the Nell Gwynne but have a special fondness for the Dove - especially the small 'upper terrace' that there is a good view from.
Hi Rob. What a delightful video, thank yo, jjust the thing on a dark and cold november early evening. . I wonder, is it possible to walk the Thames towpath from The Dove to Strand on the Green? That stretch of the Thames is part of the annual University Boat Race route - used to go to watch the start in my younger days, before we had a television. .
The Seven Stars 53 Carey St. WC2 grade 2 listed. 1602-3 I have been to a few of those I think I didn't relate The Dove to the Dove Press either that was new to me. Fascinating information I wasn't aware of including Morris I had forgotten. Thanks Rob :)
Well Rob thats a fine end to a Sunday evening and looking throuh the comments as always nothing negative, not a big beer man myself but I have taken friends to the Ye Olde Mitre Ely Place 1546 vintage and their eyes popped out , never even heard of it let alone find it. No trains buses tubes you do give us virety well done
A lovely video to finish off a cold and miserable Sunday. As always, thanks very much Rob.
It's a pleasure Jake, thanks for watching :-)

It’s near the time of year for it again Doug! Cheers 🍺
There are so many ghosts stories associated with Pubs and the London Underground.always intriguing to hear them though.
The problem is, reality is way more scary.
Brilliant as always 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Mick!
I banged my head on those stairs!
@@Robslondon I am not surprised! It was always a relief to make it back to your pint in one piece...
Those look amazing! I need to visit those on future trips to London!
Good excuse to come! 😉🍺
@@Robslondon oh, I always have plenty of excuses! ;)
Perfect viewing for the recent cold-snap. 🥶🍺☺
Would you be up for doing a beer gardens episode next summer?
That’s a nice idea 😉🍺
I don’t normally like London but your videos make it look lovely!
Thank you Jon
I've visited all except the Nell Gwynne but have a special fondness for the Dove - especially the small 'upper terrace' that there is a good view from.
Yes, it’s a beauty 😉
Hi Rob. What a delightful video, thank yo, jjust the thing on a dark and cold november early evening. . I wonder, is it possible to walk the Thames towpath from The Dove to Strand on the Green? That stretch of the Thames is part of the annual University Boat Race route - used to go to watch the start in my younger days, before we had a television. .
Thank you Eileen! Yes, The Dove is one of the best places to watch the boat race 😊
Thanks Rob! Cheers!
Cheers John!
Thank you 🤩
Have a beer on me, Rob 👍👍
Thank you so much as always Wagner :-) You're a star! Hope you're keeping well.
Great episode 👍
Thank you 🤩
another great video rob
Thanks mate
Love the nell gwynne my favourite pub in london
It is a good one ;-)
Excellent, yet again! It’s a shame that at least one of these pubs is cashless, which discriminates against my only method of payment 😔
Thanks Russell!
Ahhh... my Sunday is complete
Ah, thank you deviljelly 😄
I hope someday I will be able to visit London and enjoy one of these fine pubs.
Nostalgia trip for me - I was a regular at the Dove in the 1970s. Terrific location and Fullers’ beers less than a mile from the brewery!
Thanks so much David; lovely comment ;-)
Well Rob thats a fine end to a Sunday evening and looking throuh the comments as always nothing negative, not a big beer man myself but I have taken friends to the Ye Olde Mitre Ely Place 1546 vintage and their eyes popped out , never even heard of it let alone find it. No trains buses tubes you do give us virety well done
Thank so much Butch. Yes, The Old Mitre is a beauty- I would’ve included it here if J hadn’t already featured it 😉
I used to go to the Dove. It is indeed a cosy pub. Very nice, winter and summer.
Yes, it’s a lovely place
