    i couldn't disagree more with you on this one. skyward sword is one of the worst zelda games. yeah they may have fixed a lot in the hd version but it doesn't change the forced direction combat still, the bland overworld and the insane hand hold nature of the game and the boring back tracking. there is still so many things fundamentally wrong with skyward sword. also breath of the wild is an amazing game.

      @@kocant1274 The backtracking complaint is way blown out of proportion imo. When you return to old areas, it’s usually to either unlock a new section of a region (aka find an entirely new area), or the region is mixed up in a way like the flooded faron woods or the stealth section of eldin volcano. People make it seem like the exact same areas are reused several times which isn’t really true

      I feel like tedious is too strong of a word to describe the owl statue system. It’s definitely not as bad as people say. Owl statues are never too far away from any location you’re in at any point. Are they an unnecessary extra step? Sure, but I wouldn’t even describe them as cumbersome.
      I feel like people are exaggerating the owl statue system to make fast travel being locked to an amiibo seem worse. Don’t get me wrong, that’s still a bad thing to do, but we don’t need to make it seem worse than it is.

    The opinion on Skyward Sword shifted right on time with the people who played it as kids growing up. The internet is forever young, and what gets reappraised well is always tied to nostalgia. For example, when I first started browsing the internet, Mario 3 was heralded as the best Mario game. Then, it was World. Then about a decade back, it was 64. Recently, people "came around" on Sunshine, and now, Galaxy holds a special place in most hearts.
    The only constant here is the march of time and a desire to look back.

    The whole section on why you didn't like Breath of the Wild that much really hit home for me as someone who never really enjoyed the game. I remember feeling really scared to share my opinion on the game back in 2017 cause everyone was in love with it and we also know how people can be when 1 person comes out with a different opinion (granted it's easier to share this opinion nowadays as more people are coming out about their problems with it). Something I do remember, though, is rewatching your "The future of Zelda worries me" video several times since you seemed like the only person that shared my thoughts on the formula BotW had set up.
    As for Skyward Sword, it's my favorite Zelda game and basically has been since it came out. It might just be because I love the Wii a lot and find motion controls really fun, but no other Zelda game has come close to the same level of happiness that SS gives me.

Heck I’d even suggest to Nintendo to transform the original Legend of Zelda into a 3D game, with BOTW’s free camera and traditional controls and emphasis on exploring, classic weapons such as grappling hooks and stuff from traditional Zelda games, and making the dungeons have items that help progress further into the game.

    The only game I've enjoyed less specifically because of the price was Halo: ODST. I bought it at midnight and returned it 4 hours later. No reason it should have been $60. I enjoyed it less because the whole time I felt like I just got robbed. When I bought it again later for much cheaper I could relax and enjoy it. I think there are times price directly effects enjoyment. MGS5 Ground Zeroes is another example.

    If I ask someone what their favorite 3D Zelda game is I think any answer is valid and says more about the player's preferences than about how to objectively rank the games (which is impossible). I love them all (except TP which still wasn't bad). I've been playing BotW for almost 600 hours now and SS is my 3rd favorite after OoT and MM.
    Having said all that, since you're opened the door on unpopular opinions, I actually really like backtracking. I feel it makes the world more "dense" and realistic to visit places multiple times for multiple things. It's pretty lame that an entire mountain range would only matter for one single item or something.
    OoT is filled with backtracking:
    You start off in the forest, you come back to the forest to get song to unlock the volcano, you come back again to get a medallion, you come back a few times for side quests.
    Every major location gets at least 2 visits (child + adult)
    and the grave yard/kakariko are the site of like 5+ little quests over time.
    MM is literally about backtracking.
    One reason I didn't care too much for TP is because every area felt like a place I went once to fix in a transactional way and then never really cared about again. It was a "vast" empty world. SS is a smaller denser world that unfolds from multiple angles. The first time I went to Lake Floria/the Ancient Cistern I was like "THIS WAS IN THE FOREST THE WHOLE TIME!?!?!?". The sand sea isn't just "more mining facility". I've always felt that the "there are only 3 locations you keep going to" is kinda misleading. There are only 4.5 biomes: forest, volcanic, desert, sky but there are actually about 10-12 locations between them, at least, and they're different.

    I think the takeaway from your experience with SS on the Wii was that a Zelda game doesn't need immersive controls to be a Zelda game, whereas the Wii controls really shined in games like Wii Sports, where most if not all of those games required motion controls to not feel dull and lifeless. That said, the Switch making motion controls an option was a solid choice, as I personally enjoyed the motion controls and the immersion they gave (I had a nerd moment when you used the motion controls to pull out the Goddess Sword), but it also made it more accessible for those, like yourself, that did not want to sacrifice comfort for unnecessary immersion.

Like many people i was dissapointed to find out how lackluster the divine beasts and shrines were. I also thought the story was lacking. But more recently I began my second playthrough, and once I finished it I realsized how amazing the game truely was. I learned to appreciate it for what it has rather than what it missing from it that would make it a traditonal zelda experience. Honestly, one of my biggest complaints about Breath of the Wild isn’t necessarily the designs of the “dungeons” themselves, but how they look.
    They all just look super same-y and all function the exact same. I suppose that the shrines are supposed to be like miniature dungeons, but they all look identical too. Not to mention the bosses have the same red goopy textures and ancient armors on them, it just feels... I dunno... lazy?
    So I guess it was honestly a breath (heh) of fresh air when I tried out this game and saw the varied and unique ideas they had for dungeons in this game and how unique each boss is (except for one boss that gets repeated 3 bloody times). I ended up liking this game quite a lot.
    I still love Breath of the Wild but I don’t get why they couldn’t have done more unique things with the Divine Beasts and their bosses. Like why couldn’t Waterblight Ganon be replaced with a pirate captain? Or maybe Thunderblight Ganon could be some kind of fast electric samurai or something? I don’t know, the game itself is still great but it feels a lot more generic than even this game which still reuses past generic Zelda locales.
    Hopefully BOTW2 will be more unique, with its areas and potential dungeons, but this game is pretty sick though if you missed traditional 3D Zelda.

    10 hours, HAHAHHAA you've clearly not done the 2nd and 3rd part of the game. This is one of the biggest issues of the game. Part 2, 3 where the devs really slacked off and force you to backtrack a fuck ton for annoying fetch quests just to progress the story that can easily be written out for pacing quality of life. Fi is very annoying in the original.
    HD remaster is my 4th run of the game after not playing it for 7 years. I really love the music, some of the best characters are in this game, lovely art style, controls aren't an issue.
    I already completed this a week ago so I've gifted it to my brother for his birthday. He knows i'm not a fan but he really loves SS alot and it gave me a chance to look back at it one more time to see if my opinions have changed with the QOL improvements. My only real issue with the game now is the final third. The second third is fine because at least new areas open up and have nice elements to them. The final third just feels like they weren't confident with the game's length so they added another section thinking it was the right move but it makes you hate some of the areas because you're back again for the third time and not much has changed.

  • @paulryan220
    @paulryan220 3 роки тому

    As someone who's about to beat the game for the first time, the game's quality takes a nosedive after the first third of the game. The dungeon quality remains great, but the game does absolutely nothing with the idea of revisiting areas and is so incredibly shameless about how it pads out the game with tedious fetch quests that it's shocking. The pre-temple content in Faron Woods and Eldin Volcano when revisiting them is unfortunately really lackluster and barebones, which is a shame because your first time through them is really fun and filled with things to do.
    Breath of the Wild lacks in dungeon design, at least with the Divine Beasts, but nearly every other thing is an improvement upon Skyward Sword, besides maybe the story. The world building and exploration is leagues better than Skyward Sword's attempts and the entire game is way more consistently inventive and entertaining compared to SS. Breath of the Wild's world is so much more fully realized and creative in how you approach compared to the dull, empty sky in SS and in hindsight, the extremely linear world design in combination with the game filling itself with tedious fetch quests halfway in really hurts the game's pacing and world building.
    That being said, Skyward Sword is still a very good game. Despite doing nearly nothing with the idea of revisiting areas and the game peaking in the first third, the silent realms and dungeon design past that point are still great.

However I'm happy for those who get to experience this with a fresh perspective, and I truly am glad they feel they got their money's worth. I'm not saying every re-release or remaster has to have groundbreaking new additions or features to make it worth the price, sometimes the essential QOL improvements are enough, but to charge a premium triple A price, regardless of inflation, is a bit much. Hope you're doing okay dude, happy you found yourself enjoying this title.

SS was judged too harshly, and BOTW got away with a lot more than it should have, no longer will I call this Zelda the "Sonic 06" of Zelda games. Now that SS can be played traditionally, this is one of, if not my favorite in the franchise.

    As much as I'd consider the quality of life changes good, the rest of the game still just isn't fixed. The game just drags super hard. It lasts about 20 hours too long. The quality of life changes don't even last for the whole game. By the end of the game, fi is once again jumping in every 3 seconds to tell you stupid shit you already know like the fact that the object that you came to the dungeon for (which is marked on, not one, but TWO different maps) is in the room. She straight up pops out to tell you that a locked door is GASP locked and that you need a key for it!
    By the 20 hour mark, they start making you do the same long trek 4 times for no other reason than to watch a 30 second cutscene before going back to what you're doing. The same minibosses pop up a dozen more times in places that don't make logical sense (A robot pirate in an bajillion year old goddess tower that's been locked since the beginning of time or whatever!?)
    Wind waker definitely had a big padded mission in it (which was fixed in the remake) but skyward swords padding isn't just "do a long mission that's too long at the end of the game." Its the entire last 3/4s of the game. The ending of the game feels like it comes 10 hours in, but then the yoink that ending and say go do a long meandering side quest that takes literally about 20 hours on an average playthrough.
    Imagine a quest. You need to collect 3 mcguffins. You don't know where it is, so you have to find an npc who does. You talk to every npc and you find the guy and he says "I don't know where it is. I do know where a clue is, though." So you set off to find the clue. you find the clue, but its actually just a map. You open the map to find out its missing pieces. They've been stolen by moles. Chase down all the moles. You have all the pieces and put the map together, but you can't read it. You have to find an npc to read the map and tell you where it goes. You scour the world and find the npc who reads the map. You follow the directions and get to the end to find a rock. The rock isnt what you're there for, but has markings on it. So you follow the markings to find a dungeon that you have to do a long stealth mission in and at the end is a key that lets you open the door to the thing you actually want. You have just found one of THREE of the things you need. Do it again twice more with minimal to no changes and fi popping in literally every step of the way to regurgitate both what you did, what you found, AND where to go, and then repeat the whole thing a second time. That's the last half of skyward sword. The only reason it's a ""full"" release is because they make the quests meander around and repeat themselves with you doing the exact same thing 8 times with them forcing it to take as long as physically possible every single time. Without that padding and meandering, the game would have ended 10 hours in.

    • @zachvalzach2434
      @zachvalzach2434 3 роки тому

      1. Fi's dialogue was cut down in HD. In the original, she interrupted more often. These triggers have been changed to be optional.
      2. Cutscenes are now skippable. In the original, cutscenes could only be skipped in Hero Mode (new game plus).
      3. Autosave has been added to HD.
      4. When saving, players can now pick a file rather than remain stuck to the slot they started on.
      5. The original game had a Sheikah Stone which would give the player hints on how to get farther in the game (and by hints, I mean it would basically tell you exactly what to do). For the HD release, this feature was removed entirely.
      6. The Wii version showed a Wii remote in the center of the boss keys in an attempt to help the player understand how the piece was oriented relative to the controller. Instead, it obscured the player's view and acted more as a distraction (IMO). This was removed entirely on Switch; it was not replaced with a Joy-Con.
      7. Dialogue can now be sped up and skipped outside of cutscenes. In the original, you had to wait for the text to scroll at an insultingly slow pace every time you spoke to someone.
      8. Although the game is a remaster, Link's character model actually got an upgrade. He now has more polygons, which make him appear smoother in certain areas such as his shoulders.
      9. Various other minor changes, especially at the beginning to change the pacing. Certain dialogue interruptions from NPCs have been made optional. Horwell now gives 20 rupees if you fetch him the headmaster's pet. The map tutorial is earlier to help players find Groose the first time.
      Note: the Horwell and sword tutorials have *not* been changed. People are praising HD for making them optional, but both always were optional in the original game.

    • @zachvalzach2434
      @zachvalzach2434 3 роки тому

      Ah, another thing: the original game had a game-breaking bug caused by doing certain late-game events out of order. This was never patched, but Nintendo released a Wii channel for fixing save files which had been affected (sending them back in time, essentially, to do things in the "correct" order).
      In the HD version, this bug has finally been patched and players can pursue the endgame in whichever order they please as was originally intended.

    I sorta agree with what you have to say about the pricing. The age of the game doesn't matter as long as you get your money's worth. If Nintendo can charge the same price for a 10 hour game that's not meant to be quality over quantity, I don't see the issue. Only counterpoint being games like Skyrim, despite how much it's rereleased, it's never regiven a full price.

    Wal-Mart always sells new releases at $50 so that's where I picked this up. I will agree BotW's only real flaw is the major dungeons were pretty lacking compared to previous games, but I still love BotW's open world (my big hope for the sequel is we get a game with the great open world design of the first but with dungeons more akin to Ocarina of Time or Skyward Sword). Even as someone who did play the Wii original back in the day and did enjoy it back then, I weirdly never gave Skyward Sword a second playthrough, it's one of the few Zeldas I've only played once. With this HD version it feels like when I played the HD version of Okami (which I also originally played on the Wii), it feels both very familiar and new all at the same time.
