link wears blue in the wilds era games because blue is the rarest colour in nature, therefore the art team though that blue would contrast nicely with the large, green open world! :)
Nop. The developers already said in interviews that they didn't go with blue for any other reason other than changing Link's outfit being part of the whole "rethinking Zelda conventions" mantra. They went with blue apparently completely at random, and blue contrasting with green was a rationalization that they came up with after the fact (which makes no sense whatsoever, by the way. Blue is still just a prevalent as green in the game due to the sky).
I thought it was cool you needed to complete every shrine to earn the Wild Tunic. It gives Link and the player a strong sense of pride because they had to earn their green through hardwork. Instead of just having it given to you.
That's a good point, but I feel if you got the wild set after defeating all four blights and clearing the divine beasts, i would have felt an equally strong sense of pride
That wouldn't really make as much sense from a story perspective though. The wild set in breath of the wild is basically meant to be the monks' reward to link since he has proved to them (by completing all of their trials i.e shrines) to be the true hero of the land If he got the set randomly after beating the divine beasts it wouldn't make much sense imo
@@TheZeldaEnthusiast personally i think that the tunic of the wild is more like an easter egg, honestly similar to the master cycle 0. it's not there to form part of the game, but rather speak to older fans
@@melizabeth555 Exactly. And it's a very bad speech, because the Tunic of the Wild's design straight up sucks. Seriously, it's by far the ugliest design of the traditional clothes in the entire series. So much so I'm convinced it was designed like that on purpose to not upstage the Champion's Tunic. Specially because the main art director of the series, Satoru Takizawa, has been on record saying that he never liked Link's original design, specially the cap, so it's pretty clear to me that he wants to get rid of it. Hence why we didn't get a new tunic in TotK too.
The green clothes have just become so iconic at this point, it's hard to imagine him in anything else. The Champion's tunic was a nice change of pace. But I'm glad all the amiibo outfits were available. By the time I reach Hiteno Village I usually stay there and scan amiibo day after day until I get a complete Time or Sky set. If I can get the Cap of Time early on, it's a perfect color March for the dyed green Hylian Tunic.
There was a hero before the skyword sword link who wore a similar outfit. I' m not 100% sure if the manga in hyrule historia is canon, but i believe at least his existence is. And in the manga at least this hero is also depicted wearing a green tunic. So there may have been a hero that wore green even before skyword sword took place
The thing I, just a personal take, hate about the Champion's tunic is that it looks like an oversized shirt. Twilight princess take on the whole outfit was just, awesome.
I think they fixed it in totk but yeah its definitely my least favourite link outfit. Also I don't get the love for the twilight princess design since I think its trying way too hard to be cool. Infact i think skyward sword has the best design for link since it's a relatively believable outfit without being overly edgy.
2:35 technically Tinierbell does talk. She just speaks exclusively in bell chimes, hence the name. Which makes Tatl a much closer Timkerbell analogue, right down to their personalities and yellow glow.
imagine a Zelda game where you not only have to acquire your master sword to gain power, but also your tunic has a big significance with this too. For example, you have to collect various pieces of the set scattered throughout Hyrule, and then once acquired, you go and face whatever evil is threatening the land this time.
I love the zonai gear because it tends to blend blueish-green refined zonaite pieces. Its the best of traditional green link and botw-onwards blue link.
I think I like the new direction of the blue tunic. I feel that BOTW focused more on Zelda, hence blue is the most used color in that title. But with TOTK green was the most present color. Me personally I really enjoy dying the Hylian tunic green and pairing that with the Cap of the Wild, amazing combination.
Right on. I remember seeing the hylian tunic and hood for the first time, and thought those were the traditional link clothes. Man was i disappointed when i put the hood on Anyway, Ive always liked the hylian trousers more than the wild shorts. Also, thanks so much for joining as a channel member!
one omission you missed here was in breath of the wild the warm doublet, which is green and gifted to you by none other than the king of Hyrule King Rhoam. being gifted to you by the king and fitting you perfectly shows it was meant to be warn by the hero Link
I love how they claimed that Link had to be green because the bushes were green... even though it's not even the same shade of green. 😂 It's like when people claim Link's hair had to be pink in a Link to the Past because of Bunny Link, despite them once again not being the same shade of Pink.
I was thinking the SAME thing while working on this video. Totally different shades of green. Im no expert, but maybe I should have mentioned that while talking about how the nes was able to handle a red and blue tunic
@TheZeldaEnthusiast I mean, it's true that the NES has a limited number of color palettes, but the palettes for the background and the palettes for the objects (characters and enemies) usually occupy two separate sets of slots. So if you want something to have the same palette as the background, you need to have 2 instances of the same palette in each set of slots. There's no real reason to do that, other than some very niche scenarios where you might need to cheat to make the game look more graphically complex than it is. Like using an object to make it look like a background has more detail than it could actually have. But most games use them for more important things.
@@TheZeldaEnthusiast As someone who has done research into the Famicom's limitations as a console, here's my insight: The Famicom could support eight colour palettes and one background colour. Four of these palettes were for background sprites (i.e. stuff that can't move) and four for the moving gameplay elements. Link's palette (brown, tan, and green) is shared with the bow, arrows, Pols voice, and a few other things. There's the red and blue palettes that are always active and are used for a buncha different things. The third palette is changed depending on the room and covers everything from the Zola to Ganon. You can tell that what shares Link's palette because when he gets a ring all of the items and enemies that share his palette also swap out the green for red or blue. The reason this happens is because only one palette can be used or sprite. Each one has a max of three colours (technically four but transparency is its own colour that's always present). To use more than three you'd have to layer sprites on top of each other. That's how things like the old man and Zelda have black eyes. They're actually transparent but are showing the background colour underneath, which is black.

There's also Zelda II Adventure of Link. He has a green tunic by default, but it turns into a slightly brownish shade of redbas long as you have the Shield spell active (however, this could just be an aspect of gameplay rather than lore). Best thing about the Wilds tunic set is that it's the only one of the tunic sets that can be dyed in Hateno. I usually dye the hat with another set's top, such as the Hylian set. I do this because I don't like that the arms and legs of the outfit, despite the description saying it fit's perfectly, are clearly too short for BotW Link's limbs. The shorts are fine on their own, but combined with the weird mid-length of the sleeves, it just looks like it was made a few sizes too small. My favorite visually was pairing the hat from the Wild set with the Warm Doublet and Hylian trousers you get on the plateau. Hilariously, this also means your reward for all shrines becomes... Just a hat.
What i never understood is why in ocarina of time, link doesn't wear green because of tradition, it's just because his kokiri outfit. And then in windwaker is clearly states that when boys grow of age, they wear the HERO OF TIMES green tunic, not skyward sword links.
Thanks Kimberly! That's the whole idea, make something fun everyone can enjoy, and even if I’m playing the mini games on their behalf, the bragging rights for 1st place are pretty sweet indeed
Between the "at the end of all timelines" and a re-established Hyrule, the Blue tunic makes sense It also explains why the 10,000 year ago the Sheikah made a green set for him? Because the Hero then wore green. But, unfortunately that was Also when the Royal family started taking over everything and making the Sheikah remove their tech and splitting them. Link and green go hand in hand :) This is one of the many reasons why botw and tolk will never be among my favorite zelda games. Ocarina of time, majoras mask, and skyward sword are my top three favorite games I love. But I will say most of the classic games are amazing.
It's always interesting how voice people really hit pronunciation of certain words. You really hit the laaaaaaaas in Legolas. I'm probably wrong and lazy but I just pronounce it Legoless.
I like all of the fun get-ups you can put Link in, ngl In Spirit Tracks I actually have him wear the Train driver uniform because I like it more LOL (It's just a refreshing change imo) For BotW I usually wear the odd climate-specific-, climbing- or Shieka-"Ninja"-gear, but I don't get the whining about "wah, why is it not green anymore?" to be completely honest. Good Video
Not only that, but you have to do 50% of the “dungeons” before having access to the complete 120 shrines. And prior to Champion’s Ballad, that left you only 2 Divine Beasts before storming the castle properly to face Calamity Ganon. I really wish the Champion’s Tunic was compatible with the Dye Shop so I could dye it green.😭 If they were Hellbent on the champion blue motif, _Hyrule Warriors_ pretty much already solved that with the blue scarf/sash Link wears with his green outfit. _Age of Calamity_ even lets you unlock that one though you pretty much have to finish the whole game before you can access it. Would love to see the cutscenes with him wearing _that_ outfit while Zelda still had her old outfit on since you can’t switch her back once she goes goddess mode aside from swapping her to her winter garb.😒
Between Pan and Hood then one of the first color you think of nature/natural colors is green and I always thought that he is supposed to be linked to nature like a guardian also it is a color linked with survivalists/hunters
While sort of the same evolution, Beetlejuice went through a similar outfit association. However, unlike Link Beetlejuice hardly ever wore his well own outfit thought the original film, and instead wore a number of different outfits, and just like Link became attached to what was considered the default clothing. What you might have missed was how both of these characters got their own cartoon series, and the main character being easily identified by the associated outfit. This was such to a point that the sand worm monsters had to be redesigned for the cartoon else it would clash with Beeltejuice's own stylization. While both of these characters have changed outfits a lot, they both became known for a single outfit.
What I wanted out of Breath of the Wild, was to be able to play as freaking Old man Link, because the dude had been recovering for a freaking 100 years, yet he didn't age 1 bit and I'm sick and tired of the kid Links, I want to see a badass white hair and even bearded Link kicking ass in Hyrule, but unfortunately the closest thing of being able to play as someone like that is Geralt from the Witcher games, and like what if they had made that as a reward for completing shrines and stuff, that they had made Old man Link start to regain the youth that had been taken away from him, which would have even worked as a game mechanic as to why Link had low stamina and health, and it was because the guy was a freaking old man and then by the time you do all the shrines and stuff, he is at his peak and aged to his 20s and then he even gets recognized as the Hero of Legend, versus the discrimination he would have faced being a weak old man. And like with this idea they could have even created multiple endings, because it would be funny if the speed running Links would manage to save Zelda as an old man and then she would be surprised about that, while the canonical ending would be that Link would save Zelda after reaching his prime.
Its funny that the green gear has no stats that are upgradable ive tried in botw and totk. I had recolored the hood and pants to white with the champion shirt having to stay blue which looks good
Could you smash tears of the kingdom and breath of the wilds story together ? That would be a massive game! You could have the under dark and the sky islands. And both the issues with the Divine beasts and the 4 demons from totk. And the individual temples and issues each place has. It would be great
Fun fact: Up until recently, Japan actually considered Blue and Green to be nuances of the same color, which could also explain why in BOTW, he's wearing a blue tunic in all of the promotional material instead of a green one. Because to Japanese people, they're basically the same color.
Link wears green because his original design was inspired by Peter Pan. I just clicked on this video to write this comment and I dont understand, why you need 17 minutes to answer this simple question.
I don't understand why people would think the green was a hardware limitation. Not only does he change tunic colors, as stated in the video. But the green used for his tunic and the green used for the bushes and rock structures are different shades... If they had to use the same color they would have, but they made a conscience decision to make it different.
Personally, I love the idea of Link’s outfit being reworked pretty radically. However, I have a soft spot for him wearing green, since green usually symbolizes Courage or the Hero’s Spirit throughout the series. In my opinion, that makes the Archaic Tunic the best of both worlds: a unique design that retains a connection to Link himself, rather than just to the Royal Family. To hell with the stats, I wore that Tunic for Ganondorf himself and it just looks so good, especially with how it parallels Ganondorf’s outfit.
"It's ironic because Tinkerbell never talks and Navi always does" That's because your analogy is meaningless, and Navi, stands for Navigation. She's a piece of onboarding to teach the player how to use the game. Link never talks for obvious reasons. Basically the game is Peter Pan in the forest, and you get why he's green.
I'm not a fan of the champion tunic, that shade of blue is a bit of an eyesore. And having to do all 120 shrines just to get the classic outfit was lame. As you said, by that point there's nothing left to do really. TotK did it better since you can get the wild set way earlier if you know where they are, but it still kinda sucks because you probably won't find them for a long time on a blind playthrough (for me it was like 150 hours until I finally came across the trousers and inferred the location of the other two pieces).
in botw he doesnt get his tunic till you finish all the shrine in witch in some ways shows that he is the true hero just throwing that out there lol updating this cuz i just got to that part of the video lol
your "real world" explanation seems separate because you were just talking about Miaymoto. the "in game" reasons start with OOT, which is Aonuma's invention. pls know the difference, thx.
7:54 "but Link doesn't always wear green by choice." you missed an oppertunity to talk about a major theme of Wind Waker, which is earning your place. Yes, at first Link is embarassed and uncomfortable that he has to wear the Hero's Clothes, and Grandma reassures him that it's only for today. But throughout the game, Link doesn't take it off, so why? It's because he realizes just how important his family is to him. It's a very human story about growing up thinking traditions and love are hokey nonsense, and then being completely humbled and finally taking it as your own responsibility.
8:50 you also missed that Faron is cognate with Farore. it's a huge huge huge part of Aonuma's directed Zelda games that these made up names and words allude to one another, such is the case with Fado in Wind Waker. It's obviously playing into the phonetics of "Forest", so she's a spirit of nature. [Which to be fair, you bring up @ 4:03 but it's not completely direct still] These things aren't just named after the particular god in the lore, they are constantly being reincarnated with new beings in history which carry on their spirit. The same things happening to Zelda & Link of course, but their names don't change for poetic reasons.
10:03 BotW is a departure directly because Aonuma had far less creative control. You can read Iwata Asks and in every single interview, he's backtalking Miyamoto for giving him a strict deadline on Majora and a whole host of things. He had to make up a tech demo for Wind Waker that was purely a lie so that Miaymoto wouldn't see the bold artstyle and instantly hate it. It's true Fujibayashi is credited as director, but I don't think I need to tell you Skyward Sword is much more in line with TP than it is BotW, and it's not a clean transition point either. And yeah, like you said, you don't get the tunic itself until after getting 100%, but what's worse actually is that instead of being a fairy boy, island kid, or a ranch hand; BotW Link is a predestined super soldier whose been cryogenically frozen as a last resort weapon. I mean, the tone couldn't be more stark. Thank you for calling it "blasphemous", woo!

It's always interesting how voice people really hit pronunciation of certain words. You really hit the laaaaaaaas in Legolas. I'm probably wrong and lazy but I just pronounce it Legoless.
I like all of the fun get-ups you can put Link in, ngl
In Spirit Tracks I actually have him wear the Train driver uniform because I like it more LOL (It's just a refreshing change imo)
For BotW I usually wear the odd climate-specific-, climbing- or Shieka-"Ninja"-gear, but I don't get the whining about "wah, why is it not green anymore?" to be completely honest.
Red Link is best link
shrek is his favourite dreamworks character its pretty simple dude
Lmao😭😭😭
Real
without even watching the video my technically educated guess would be the limited color pallette of the NES
[A wild Bird Man appeared!] Link: BOO! 🤡
the green tunic is technically the first one you get you're an elf forest person
I didn't even realize the tunic was in it 💀I barely did those shrines.
In the original legend of Zelda, Zelda’s outfit is synced with links tunic, as well as I think the ropes on the raft?
Ahh, so that was one of their creative tricks to make blue or red tunics work. Thanks! Wish i realized sooner
And like with this idea they could have even created multiple endings, because it would be funny if the speed running Links would manage to save Zelda as an old man and then she would be surprised about that, while the canonical ending would be that Link would save Zelda after reaching his prime.
make a video about the creation of the depths
I'll add this to my ideas list doc
Mirkwood used to be Greenwood too
Its funny that the green gear has no stats that are upgradable ive tried in botw and totk.
Cause he GSF 4 Lyfe
10:37 WHAT?! I cleared that temple twice and didn't find those
He explains in the video that you have to complete all 120 Shrines.
Sometimes, I load up BoTW just so I can windbomb!...
Love it!!
I thought it was because he loves the color green
HOT take, red tunic is best tunic!
1:40 it's also not even the same shade of green XDDDDDD
I hate the color blue so to answer your question; anything but blue. Green is nice but red or purple would’ve been cool too.
He wears green to blend into the natural surroudings somewhat.
I’ll never forget the name the Tony express 🤑😬😭
Short answer he lives in kokiri forest
Honestly, blue isnt that bad on him, but green is like the og, so i prefer green
I actually prefer the blue. So sue me! Oh it's me! It's A A G rather than Aag!
Thanks for letting me know! I'll say it right in the next one. GGs on the 1st place mini game score lol

Noooo Tri force hero’s pre outfit is the best outfit bc he has a bear on his shirt and bears are awesome😭🐻🫶
Hi Tony 😊
Hey 👋 😺
Because he lives in the woods and is influenced by Peter Pan and Robin Hood?
Lego Lass
Personally, I love the idea of Link’s outfit being reworked pretty radically. However, I have a soft spot for him wearing green, since green usually symbolizes Courage or the Hero’s Spirit throughout the series. In my opinion, that makes the Archaic Tunic the best of both worlds: a unique design that retains a connection to Link himself, rather than just to the Royal Family. To hell with the stats, I wore that Tunic for Ganondorf himself and it just looks so good, especially with how it parallels Ganondorf’s outfit.
Maybe cause japan doesn't have this weird obsession with green being an evil colour even though its the colour of life and nature
Link wears green because he was based on Peter Pan!
2:20
no its because green is sick af
yas queeen
inspired by Peter pan

"Cokeri"? Isn't it Kokiri?
Because he is fan of Robinhood
"It's ironic because Tinkerbell never talks and Navi always does"
That's because your analogy is meaningless, and Navi, stands for Navigation.
Link talks all the time they just dont show you what he says because you already know
not first
Aloha!
Do not care for the blue. Green today, tomorrow, and whatever else.
Link in BOTW is the legend of the wild, you can get the wild set from going to the ancient ruins in the canyon.
First!
in botw he doesnt get his tunic till you finish all the shrine in witch in some ways shows that he is the true hero just throwing that out there
lol updating this cuz i just got to that part of the video lol
Oh yeah. A true hero. Doing all those repetitive shrines and korok seeds. And barely saving anyone or anything.
your "real world" explanation seems separate because you were just talking about Miaymoto. the "in game" reasons start with OOT, which is Aonuma's invention. pls know the difference, thx.
Bringing the deeper theme of ww into it would have made a better script. Maybe ill get a chance to work that bit of info into a future video
@@TheZeldaEnthusiast that's cool! but you deleted my other comments lol
OK, I know it’s been decades, but should this include a spoiler warning for the original Zelda game? 😉
Cause it's always been that way. Stop trying to change it.
Got some major attitude there bud
